The recommended PS5 profile at a glance
Classic role-playing games reward stable text, correct color, and low input delay more than headline video numbers. Their original artwork was generally authored for standard dynamic range (SDR), and many run at a fixed presentation that cannot be transformed into a modern high-frame-rate game by a console output switch. The following profile is therefore a safe starting point rather than a promise that every title will look identical.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| PS5 or display option | Starting setting | Why it suits classic RPGs |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Automatic | Sony says Automatic selects the highest resolution the connected television supports without forcing a mode the display cannot accept. |
| HDR | On When Supported | HDR-capable games can use HDR, while non-HDR classics remain in SDR instead of being converted. |
| Adjust HDR | Run the calibration | The console uses your display’s measured HDR behavior rather than a one-size-fits-all value. |
| VRR | On when the display supports it | VRR can match refresh timing to a compatible game’s output, but it is not a universal classic-game enhancement. |
| Apply to Unsupported Games | Off initially | Sony warns that behavior varies by television, game, and visual mode; test it per title only if needed. |
| 120 Hz Output | On when the display supports 120 Hz | Enables 120 Hz output for supported displays and games; it does not make a fixed-rate RPG render at 120 frames per second. |
| Television picture mode | Game Mode or equivalent | Reduces processing delay; Sony specifically recommends trying Game Mode when streaming PlayStation Plus games. |
Use these values as a baseline, then make changes in the game’s own presentation menu if it provides them. A classic release may expose its own aspect-ratio, smoothing, border, or filter choices that the PS5 system menu does not control.

Set up the PS5 video output step by step
- Open the output controls. From the PS5 home screen, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Leave Resolution on Automatic. Automatic is the least troublesome choice when the same display will be used for modern and classic games. Choose a fixed 4K or 1440p mode only when you have a specific compatibility or display-management reason.
- Set HDR to On When Supported. This keeps an SDR signal for a non-HDR classic. Selecting Always On makes the PS5 convert games and apps that are not HDR-compatible to HDR output, which can alter the intended appearance of older artwork.
- Run Adjust HDR. Follow the on-screen calibration in the same room lighting and with the television’s HDR mode active. If you later change displays or picture modes, run the adjustment again.
- Enable VRR if the display supports it. Confirm VRR support in the television or monitor’s own menu. Leave Apply to Unsupported Games off until you have a reason to test a particular release.
- Enable 120 Hz Output if supported. This allows compatible displays and games to negotiate 120 Hz. It is an output capability, not a frame-rate conversion for every classic.
- Switch the display to Game Mode. The label differs by manufacturer, but the goal is the low-latency preset. Disable any television processing that remains enabled only if it creates visible delay or artifacts; the useful choices are display-specific.
- Play a representative scene. Check small menu text, a dark area, a bright spell effect, and a scrolling map. Keep notes on readability, color clipping, and motion before changing one option at a time.
HDR: why On When Supported is the safer default
The HDR choice is the setting most likely to change an older RPG’s character. On When Supported sends HDR only when the game or application provides HDR output. A non-HDR classic stays in SDR, preserving the range for which its original palette was designed.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Always On behaves differently. Sony’s HDR guidance says that games and apps without HDR compatibility are automatically converted to HDR output when Always On is selected. Conversion can be useful if you prefer one HDR television mode for every input, but it is not the same as receiving native HDR data. It may change the apparent brightness of parchment-colored menus, night scenes, skin tones, or saturated spell effects.
When Always On can make sense
- You deliberately want the television to remain in its HDR picture mode for every PS5 application.
- You have compared the same scene in SDR and converted HDR and prefer the latter on your display.
- You understand that the result is a console conversion, not a remastered HDR grade.
If none of those applies, On When Supported avoids an unnecessary conversion. Use Adjust HDR after changing the display’s HDR mode, because calibration and television tone mapping interact.

VRR and 120 Hz: useful tools, not magic upgrades
What VRR can and cannot do
Sony describes Variable Refresh Rate as a feature that adjusts the display’s refresh rate in real time for compatible televisions and games. That can reduce tearing or unevenness when a supported game’s output varies. It does not add detail to a low-resolution image, replace a game’s own frame pacing, or turn a classic RPG into a high-frame-rate remake.
Start with VRR enabled and Apply to Unsupported Games disabled. Sony cautions that applying VRR to unsupported games can produce different results depending on the television, game, and visual mode, including unexpected behavior. If a specific title shows instability, turn the optional setting back off and compare again. If the title is already stable, there is no reason to force the unsupported mode.

What 120 Hz Output actually changes
120 Hz Output lets the PS5 use a 120 Hz display mode when the display and game support it. It does not make a fixed-rate classic RPG render 120 frames per second, and it does not automatically improve the game’s internal resolution or filtering. Enable it when your television or monitor supports 120 Hz so modern titles remain flexible; judge the classic by its actual motion and text rather than by the number shown in the console menu.
If enabling 120 Hz causes a blank screen, handshake failure, or other output problem, Sony advises turning 120 Hz Output off. Re-establish a stable picture first, then troubleshoot the cable, port, and display settings before trying the option again.

How to make a classic game look less blurry
There is no documented PS5-wide switch that guarantees a CRT filter, scanlines, integer scaling, or a particular pixel presentation for every classic release. Sony’s system video pages cover output resolution, HDR, VRR, 120 Hz, transfer rate, RGB range, and related controls, but they do not define a universal blur-removal or CRT-emulation control. The individual classic release, its emulator layer, or its own game menu controls those presentation choices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the game’s own display presets first
If a title offers display presets, compare them in a menu with small lettering and in a scene with diagonal pixel art. Evaluate four things:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Text legibility: Can you read item descriptions without leaning toward the screen?
- Original contrast: Are dark backgrounds still distinct, and are bright sprites free of clipped highlights?
- Scrolling stability: Does a map or side-scrolling view move evenly, without added judder?
- Filtering artifacts: Does smoothing create halos or soften the edges of individual pixels more than you prefer?
There is no universal quality ranking for these options. A sharper preset can make lettering easier to read while emphasizing jagged diagonals; a smoother preset can reduce harsh edges while making tiny fonts less distinct. Choose per game and per display distance.
Check the television before blaming the game
Use the television’s Game Mode and confirm that it is not applying an extra zoom or aspect-ratio crop. Keep the display at its normal, uncropped aspect ratio unless the game itself provides a deliberate border or scaling choice. If the image looks soft only when streaming, test a downloaded copy before changing visual presets; network delivery can affect perceived clarity even when the game’s internal presentation is unchanged.

On PS5, open Games home screen > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog. Eligible games can be downloaded with the appropriate membership. Sony identifies the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming as benefits associated with the PlayStation Plus Premium tier, while noting that the library changes over time and differs by membership tier and region. Check your regional catalog for the exact RPG before subscribing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

|---|---|---|
| Download | The title must be eligible in your regional Classics Catalog and your membership must include access. The game runs locally after installation. | Choose this when available and you want consistent image quality, no streaming queue, and no dependence on broadband during play. |
| Cloud streaming | Sony’s current support guidance lists at least 5 Mbps broadband for PlayStation Plus game streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. The appropriate membership and a catalog listing are also required. | Useful when you want to start quickly or save console storage, provided the connection is stable enough for the selected quality. |
The 5 Mbps figure is a minimum broadband requirement, not a guarantee of perfect results. Wi-Fi congestion, other household traffic, distance to the service, and regional availability can still affect responsiveness and image quality. For a turn-based RPG, occasional latency may be less disruptive than in an action game, but text-heavy scenes still benefit from a clean, stable stream.
Cable, HDMI port, and display checklist
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display. For troubleshooting, bypass an older receiver, switch, or capture device that may not pass the desired signal.
- Use the included HDMI cable first. Sony recommends it. If you need a replacement, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rather than assuming any cable supports every mode.
- Select the correct television input. Sony states that HDMI 2.1 supports 4K at 120 Hz and advises using an HDMI 2.1 input for those features. A cable cannot add HDR, VRR, or 120 Hz support that the television or monitor lacks.
- Enable display-side features. In the television’s own menus, confirm Game Mode, HDR, VRR, and 120 Hz support. Menu names and which HDMI ports support them vary by model.
- Run Adjust HDR on the final setup. Do this after choosing the HDMI port and the display picture mode.
- Address flicker with Video Transfer Rate. If the picture flickers, Sony says lowering Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 can limit bandwidth and may improve stability. This is a troubleshooting measure, not a guaranteed improvement for every display.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The picture is washed out or too bright
- Confirm HDR is set to On When Supported rather than Always On for an SDR classic.
- Check whether the television entered an HDR picture mode even though the game is SDR.
- Run Adjust HDR again after restoring the intended display mode.
The image flickers or loses signal
- Connect the PS5 directly to a display HDMI input.
- Use the included cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Turn 120 Hz Output off to test whether the higher-bandwidth mode is the trigger.
- If flicker persists, try Video Transfer Rate -1, then -2, as Sony recommends for limiting bandwidth.
VRR makes a title look unstable
- Disable Apply to Unsupported Games first; Sony warns that unsupported combinations can behave unexpectedly.
- Retest with ordinary VRR enabled only for compatible behavior.
- If the game remains unstable, leave the optional setting disabled for that title.
Text still looks blurry
- Compare the classic release’s own smoothing, sharp, or pixel-oriented presets.
- Check for television zoom or non-native scaling.
- Compare a local download with a stream to separate game presentation from network delivery.
- Do not expect a PS5 system toggle to provide a universal integer scaler or CRT filter; those controls are release-dependent.
A streamed game feels delayed
- Use a wired network connection if practical and pause other heavy traffic.
- Confirm the connection meets Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum; 15 Mbps is the stated requirement for 1080p streaming.
- Download the game when the regional Classics Catalog and membership allow it.
- Keep Game Mode enabled on the television.
A practical per-game tuning workflow
Use the baseline profile before experimenting. Then follow this order so you can identify which change helped:
Quick Recap
- Load a save or scene containing small text, dark backgrounds, bright effects, and scrolling.
- Record the baseline with HDR On When Supported, VRR enabled normally, Apply to Unsupported Games off, and Game Mode active.
- Open the game’s own display menu, if present, and compare each preset using the four criteria: text, contrast, scrolling, and filtering artifacts.
- Keep the preferred in-game preset and retest HDR only if the scene’s brightness or color behavior remains unsuitable.
- If motion shows tearing or unevenness, test VRR. If the title is unsupported, test Apply to Unsupported Games only as an isolated experiment and revert if behavior worsens.
- If the display link becomes unstable, return to the cable and port checklist before changing several video options at once.
- Save the final choices as a simple note for that title. A setting that helps one release may not help another because presentation controls are title-specific.
Three sensible setup profiles
| Your situation | Recommended profile | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| SDR-focused television or monitor | Resolution Automatic; HDR On When Supported; VRR on if supported; Apply to Unsupported Games off; Game Mode on. | Non-HDR classics remain in SDR, while compatible modern games can still use HDR. |
| HDR/VRR/120 Hz display used for mixed libraries | Use the same baseline, add 120 Hz Output, and keep the display’s supported HDMI 2.1 input selected. | Classic games do not automatically gain 120-fps rendering; the options mainly preserve compatibility for games that support them. |
| Unreliable broadband or a text-heavy playthrough | Download the RPG from the eligible regional Classics Catalog instead of streaming. | Local installation uses console storage and requires the title to be available under your membership. |
What these settings cannot guarantee
- They cannot turn an SDR game into native HDR. Always On performs conversion; On When Supported preserves SDR for non-HDR software.
- They cannot make every classic render at 120 frames per second. 120 Hz Output only enables a compatible output mode.
- They cannot guarantee that VRR improves an unsupported game. Sony explicitly notes that results vary and unexpected behavior is possible.
- They cannot supply a universal CRT, scanline, or integer-scaling filter. Look for those choices in the individual classic release or its emulator layer.
- They cannot overcome a display’s missing capabilities. A cable and HDMI 2.1 port are required for the corresponding 4K/120 setup, but neither can add HDR or VRR to a television that lacks those features.
- They cannot guarantee a fixed streaming experience. The published 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps 1080p figure describe broadband requirements, while real-time conditions can still affect delivery.
Final pre-game checklist
- Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output is configured with Resolution Automatic.
- HDR is On When Supported, and Adjust HDR has been completed.
- VRR is enabled only when the display supports it; Apply to Unsupported Games is off unless you are deliberately testing a title.
- 120 Hz Output is enabled only on a compatible display and disabled if it causes output problems.
- The television is in Game Mode.
- The PS5 uses the included HDMI cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and a suitable display input.
- The title’s own presentation menu has been checked for aspect ratio, smoothing, borders, and pixel presentation.
- The game is downloaded when consistent local playback matters more than saving storage; otherwise the connection meets Sony’s streaming guidance.
