Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe strongest starting point for a PS5 horror game is a compatible headset with 3D Audio enabled, a personalized or carefully auditioned 3D profile, and a comfortable volume. Use Audio Focus only when quiet details are difficult to hear, and check the level after enabling it. If you play through TV speakers, measure the room for 3D Audio while seated where you normally play. For HDR, confirm that the display and the entire connection path support the desired signal, then use the individual game’s own calibration screen; there is no single PS5 brightness or tone-mapping value that is best for every horror game or television.
These settings improve your chances of hearing directional cues and seeing dark scenes as intended, but they are not performance cheats. Sony documents the console features and setup paths, while the way a particular game mixes sound, applies HDR, or supports presets remains title-specific.

What to change first
Work through the settings in this order so you can tell which change helped:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Choose your listening hardware. Headphones provide a private, direct signal; TV-speaker 3D Audio depends on the room, seating position, and speaker placement.
- Set a safe, comfortable volume. Start lower than you think you need, especially before testing Audio Focus or a bass-heavy EQ.
- Configure 3D Audio for the device you actually use. Headphones and TV speakers have separate setup menus and separate measurements.
- Compare 3D Audio with ordinary stereo. The better option is listener- and game-dependent, so use a scene with footsteps, voices, or movement around you rather than judging from a menu.
- Calibrate HDR in the display and in each game. PS5 HDR capability does not establish one universal black level, brightness, or tone-mapping value.
Keep a note of your original settings. If a change makes voices harsh, ambience disappear, or shadows become a gray wash, you can return to the previous state instead of trying to remember what you changed.

Headphones: the most controllable horror-game setup
Connect compatible headphones, then open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones). Compatibility and the controls exposed by the console vary by device; check the headset manufacturer when a menu or feature is missing. Sony’s audio-output guide describes the available device and output controls at PlayStation Support.
Create a personalized 3D profile
- In Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), choose the option to create a personalized profile.
- Listen to the sounds played from different positions.
- Answer the prompts about where each sound appears to be coming from and in which direction.
- Save the profile, then make sure Enable 3D Audio for Headphones is on.
The profile is based on your responses and can be replaced by a preset later. It is not a measurement of your hearing in a clinical sense, and it does not guarantee that every game will render a particular sound in the same way.
Try the five presets before deciding
If you prefer a quick choice, the same menu offers five presets. Listen to each with the same game scene and roughly the same volume. A preset that sounds wider or more dramatic in one title may make another title’s voices less natural, so treat these as starting points rather than rankings.

Compare 3D Audio and stereo fairly
Turn 3D Audio on, play a scene with movement around the character, and note whether front, rear, and vertical cues are easy to place. Then turn it off and repeat the scene in stereo. Keep the volume similar; a louder option often seems more detailed even when it is only louder. Use whichever mode lets you identify locations and dialogue without strain. Sony describes 3D Audio as immersive surround sound intended to make you feel inside the game, but its documentation does not claim that it improves horror-game performance or accuracy for every listener. The setup and comparison instructions are at Sony’s PS5 3D Audio guide.
Headphone output, EQ, and Audio Focus
Set the selected output device
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm that the intended output device is selected. Check the output volume, microphone choices, and any device-specific options shown for your headset. Supported PlayStation headsets can also expose EQ presets or a custom mode from the Control Center: press the PS button, select Sound, then choose the headset’s EQ controls and preview the result.

| EQ option | What Sony describes | How to audition it for horror |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Balances low and high frequencies. | Use as the neutral reference before trying another mode. |
| Bass Boost | Emphasizes bass. | Try it if low rumbles lack weight, but check that booms do not cover dialogue or ambience. |
| Shooter | Emphasizes shooting and footsteps. | It may make transient sounds more prominent, but it is not a horror-specific recommendation. |
| Custom | Lets you set your own frequency balance when supported. | Make one small change at a time and compare at matched volume. |
The available EQ choices depend on the connected hardware. Sony’s documented controls are described in its PS5 audio-output instructions. Do not assume that a mode labeled for another genre is automatically the best choice for a horror soundtrack.
Use Audio Focus only when quiet details need help
Audio Focus is a headphone-only adjustment available for games, voice chat, and media apps. Open Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus, or press the PS button and choose Sound > Audio Focus in Control Center.
You can audition four focus types:
- Boost Low Pitch emphasizes lower-frequency content.
- Boost Voices emphasizes speech.
- Boost High Pitch emphasizes higher-frequency detail, such as footsteps and metallic noises.
- Boost Quiet Sounds raises low-volume sounds more broadly.
Each option offers Weak, Medium, or Strong adjustment, with separate left and right adjustment available. For horror ambience, start with Weak Boost Quiet Sounds or Weak Boost High Pitch and listen for whether environmental details become easier to follow without making hiss or harsh effects distracting. This is a practical use of Sony’s controls, not a Sony-prescribed horror preset.
Sony warns that Audio Focus can make headphone output loud. Preview the change, lower the main volume before enabling it, and recheck the level afterward. If the sound becomes fatiguing, voices clip, or a continuous noise floor appears, reduce the strength or disable Audio Focus. Sony lists the controls and warning at How to use audio focus on PS5 consoles.
Choosing between headphones, personalized 3D, presets, and stereo
There is no evidence in Sony’s support material that one of these choices universally improves horror-game results. Use the following comparison to make a deliberate choice rather than chasing a label.

| Choice | Best reason to choose it | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Personalized 3D profile | You want the console to tailor the 3D presentation to your responses. | It takes a few minutes and may sound less natural to some listeners or in some mixes. |
| One of the five 3D presets | You want a quick, repeatable starting point. | A preset cannot account for your individual perception and may suit one title better than another. |
| Stereo headphones | You prefer a familiar, direct presentation or dislike the 3D processing. | Positional separation may feel less spacious, depending on the game’s own mix. |
| TV speakers with measured 3D Audio | You need an open-room setup and cannot use headphones. | Results depend on room reflections, seating position, speaker placement, and TV processing. |
| TV speakers in stereo | You want the simplest baseline for comparison. | It does not use the console’s measured 3D presentation. |
Run the comparison in the game, not only in the PS5 menu. A title may mix its own surround or binaural processing, and the console cannot make a game support a feature it does not implement.
TV speakers: measure the room before enabling 3D Audio
For TV speakers, go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV). Sit in the position you normally use and follow the prompts. The DualSense wireless controller’s built-in microphone measures the room from that seat. After the measurement, compare stereo and 3D Audio at a comfortable level.
When to measure again
Repeat the measurement when the TV position, seating position, or room environment changes. Moving a sofa, adding or removing a large reflective surface, or changing the TV stand can alter the result enough to justify another measurement.
If the measured result is not applied
- Unblock the TV’s speakers and check that no object is covering the speaker openings.
- Sit centered in the normal listening position while running the measurement.
- Disable the TV’s own surround, virtualizer, or other sound-enhancement processing temporarily; two processing layers can make comparison difficult.
- If the perceived volume changes after switching modes, adjust the TV volume before judging the tonal balance.
- Run the measurement again after correcting the room or seating issue.
The room-measurement flow, comparison advice, and troubleshooting guidance are documented in Sony’s 3D Audio support guide. TV-speaker 3D Audio is inherently more dependent on the physical setup than headphones, so a result that sounds excellent in one seat may not translate to another.
HDR on PS5: what the console can and cannot determine
All PS5 consoles have 4K and HDR capability, but Sony states that the available image quality depends on the complete home-entertainment setup. That includes the display, the connection path, and the settings of the equipment between the console and screen. HDR support by the console alone does not guarantee a particular brightness range or shadow detail.

Check the connection and console output
- Use a display that supports HDR and a compatible connection path, including any receiver or switch in between.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Confirm the detected signal information and set Resolution to 2160p when you are configuring a compatible 4K screen.
- Check the HDR option shown in the same area and follow the display manufacturer’s instructions for enabling HDR on the relevant input.
- Play a game with an HDR option and use its own calibration image or prompts when available.
Sony’s resolution guidance is at How to change PS5 console resolution. The page establishes the 4K/HDR capability and the 2160p path for a compatible 4K screen; it does not prescribe one universal HDR brightness, black level, or tone-mapping value for horror games.
Do not confuse 4K with HDR
4K describes resolution; HDR describes a wider luminance and color signal. A display can support one without delivering the same experience as another display, and the options available can change with the cable, receiver, input mode, or game. Set each feature according to the equipment you own rather than assuming that selecting 2160p automatically calibrates HDR.
Use the game’s calibration screen, not a generic horror value
Games differ in their HDR sliders, test images, paper-white targets, and tone-mapping behavior. If a title displays a logo, sun, checkerboard, or other reference image, adjust until the instructions say the symbol is barely visible or otherwise correctly exposed. If no calibration screen exists, use the display’s documented HDR mode and avoid extreme changes that crush dark detail or lift blacks into gray. Record the game-specific setting so you can restore it after testing another display or picture mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Console settings versus game-specific settings
PS5-level controls affect the output path, but they do not override every game’s audio or video implementation. A horror title may offer its own dynamic-range selector, dialogue slider, headphone mode, surround option, subtitles, or HDR calibration screen. Check the game’s Audio, Accessibility, Display, and HDR menus before concluding that the console setting is ineffective.

PS5 game presets can be customized, but Sony notes that some presets may not apply to every PS5 game. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets to review the available choices. Treat a preset as a convenience for supported games, not as proof that all titles will receive the same audio or display behavior. Sony explains the limits and menu path at How to customize game presets on PS5 consoles.

A practical per-game check
- Look for a headphone, binaural, surround, or 3D-audio switch and test it against the game’s default.
- Check whether the game has separate sliders for effects, ambience, dialogue, and music.
- Use subtitles or closed captions if dialogue is masked, rather than raising every channel.
- Run the game’s HDR calibration after changing the TV picture mode or moving the console to another display.
- Verify that a preset actually applies by reopening the game’s menu and listening or viewing a known scene.
Decision guide: which setup fits your room?
| Your situation | Start here | Then verify |
|---|---|---|
| You play late or share a room. | Compatible headphones, personalized 3D profile, moderate volume. | Compare with stereo and disable Audio Focus if output becomes loud. |
| Footsteps or metallic details are difficult to hear. | Weak Boost High Pitch or Boost Quiet Sounds in Audio Focus. | Recheck volume and reduce the level if ambience becomes harsh. |
| Low rumbles lack impact. | Standard EQ first, then a modest Bass Boost audition. | Make sure bass is not masking dialogue or environmental cues. |
| You use TV speakers from one fixed seat. | Measure 3D Audio (TV) while centered in that seat. | Disable TV processing and remeasure after room or seating changes. |
| Your display is HDR-capable but dark scenes look gray or clipped. | Confirm the input and connection path, then rerun the game’s HDR calibration. | Check the display’s own HDR instructions; do not copy a value from another TV. |
| A preset appears not to change a game. | Open the game’s own settings and confirm its supported options. | Remember that Sony says some PS5 game presets do not apply to every title. |
Troubleshooting common problems
3D Audio sounds worse than stereo
Turn 3D Audio off, replay the same scene, and match the volume as closely as possible. If stereo remains clearer, keep stereo for that headset or game. You can also replace the personalized profile with a preset and test again; there is no requirement to use 3D Audio when you prefer the unprocessed result.
Directional sound is vague or appears on the wrong side
Check that the intended output device is selected, that the headset is seated correctly, and that left/right balance has not been changed. Recreate the personalized profile in a quiet room and answer the direction prompts carefully. For TV speakers, sit centered and run the room measurement again.
Audio Focus made the headset painfully loud
Lower the main volume immediately, preview the setting at Weak, and reduce or disable the focus type. Sony specifically cautions that Audio Focus may increase headphone output, so never compensate by turning the volume up before testing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The TV-speaker measurement does not seem to work
Clear the speaker openings, center yourself, disable the television’s extra surround processing, and repeat the measurement. If the room or seating has changed since the last measurement, a new result is expected rather than evidence of a console fault.
HDR is unavailable or the picture is wrong
Confirm HDR support on the selected display input, inspect every receiver or switch in the signal path, and check the cable and display settings. Then revisit Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and the game’s HDR menu. A PS5’s HDR capability cannot overcome a non-HDR display or an incompatible connection path.
One-time setup checklists
Headphone checklist
- Connect a compatible headset and select it under Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Create a personalized profile under Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), or audition the five presets.
- Enable 3D Audio for Headphones, then compare it with stereo in a real game scene.
- Use the Control Center’s Sound panel for supported headset EQ controls.
- Only add Audio Focus when a quiet detail is genuinely difficult to hear; preview it at low volume.
TV-speaker checklist
- Sit in the normal playing position.
- Run Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV) and follow the controller-microphone prompts.
- Compare stereo and 3D Audio from the same seat.
- Keep the TV speakers unobstructed and disable competing TV sound processing while testing.
- Remeasure after moving the TV, seating, or major room furnishings.
HDR checklist
- Confirm HDR support on the display and every device in the connection path.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and verify the detected output.
- Use 2160p for a compatible 4K screen when appropriate.
- Enable HDR according to the display’s instructions.
- Run each game’s own HDR calibration and save settings per display or picture mode.
Bottom line
Start with a personalized headphone 3D profile, compare it directly with stereo, and keep the mode that makes directional cues and dialogue easiest to follow. Use a modest Audio Focus setting only for genuinely quiet details, and check the volume every time. For TV speakers, measure the room from your usual seat and repeat the measurement when the room changes. Treat HDR as a display-and-game calibration task: PS5 supports 4K and HDR, but your screen, connection path, picture mode, and the individual game determine the final image.
