The best PS5 external hard drive is one that meets Sony’s USB extended-storage rules and matches how you use your library. A compatible drive can hold PS5 games for later transfer and can run compatible PS4 games directly. It cannot launch PS5 games from USB; when you want to play a stored PS5 title, you must copy it to the PS5’s internal storage first.
For a named starting point, TechRadar’s 2026 roundup selects the Seagate Game Drive for PS5 as its overall pick, with capacities reported from 2TB to 5TB. The WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive for PlayStation is another manufacturer-described option, with up to 6TB listed and support for playing PS4 games while storing PS5 games. Neither statement is a controlled head-to-head test here, so use the specifications and operating limits below to choose sensibly.

What a PS5 external hard drive can—and cannot—do
On a PS5, an external USB hard drive is called USB extended storage. Its two useful jobs are different:
- PS4 games: Compatible PS4 games can be installed on the external drive and played directly from it.
- PS5 games: PS5 game data can be stored or archived on the external drive, but the game must be copied back to the console’s internal storage before it will run.
This distinction is the most important buying consideration. An external drive expands capacity and reduces the need to redownload large games, but it is not an additional location from which PS5 software can launch. PlayStation Support states: “PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5® game data back to your console storage when you want to play the game again.” See the official USB extended-storage guidance for Sony’s current requirements and procedures.

PS5 USB extended-storage requirements
Sony specifies the following baseline for a USB extended-storage drive:
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| USB performance | SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later |
| Capacity | At least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB |
| Connection | Connect the drive directly to the PS5; do not use a USB hub |
| Simultaneous drives | Only one USB extended-storage drive can be used at a time |
| Compatibility guarantee | Sony does not guarantee that every USB device will work, even when its headline specifications appear suitable |
The 250GB minimum and 8TB maximum are console compatibility limits, not recommendations for a particular library size. A drive marketed with a larger capacity cannot be used as one PS5 USB extended-storage volume beyond Sony’s 8TB ceiling.
Formatting the drive as USB extended storage erases everything already on it. Copy off any photos, documents or other files before setup. When you finish using it, use the PS5’s safe-removal command rather than pulling the cable; improper disconnection can contribute to data loss or corruption.
Best PS5 external hard-drive options in 2026
The options below are presented with their source-attributed capabilities. Current prices, stock, regional warranty terms and independent transfer-speed rankings were not established, so capacity and intended use are more reliable selection criteria than a supposed value winner.

Seagate Game Drive for PS5
TechRadar’s 2026 “Best PS5 external hard drives” roundup names the Seagate Game Drive for PS5 its overall pick and reports a 2TB–5TB capacity range. That is an editorial recommendation from the linked roundup, not a test performed for this article. Choose the capacity by estimating how many PS5 titles you want archived and how much PS4 software you expect to play from USB. Regardless of capacity, PS5 games still need to be transferred to internal storage for play.

How much capacity do you need?
Capacity determines how often you will delete, move or redownload games. There is no universal “right” size, because the useful number depends on whether the drive is mainly a PS4 play location or a PS5 archive.
Choose a smaller drive when
- You keep only a rotating selection of games installed.
- You primarily need a temporary holding area for PS5 titles before moving them back to internal storage.
- Your PS4 library is small and you do not expect to keep many games installed simultaneously.
Choose more capacity when
- You maintain a large PS4 library and want those games playable without occupying the PS5’s internal space.
- You regularly switch between PS5 games and would rather archive them than download them again.
- Multiple people use the console and each person keeps a different set of games installed.
Do not buy capacity above the console’s 8TB maximum for the expectation that PS5 will use it as one extended-storage device. Also remember that the printed capacity is not the exact free space shown after formatting and system overhead.
How to set up an external drive on PS5
Use a direct USB connection and assume that formatting is destructive. The following sequence follows Sony’s documented menu path.
- Back up the drive. Copy anything you want to keep elsewhere. Formatting as USB extended storage erases all data on the drive.
- Connect it directly. Plug the drive into a PS5 USB port. Do not route it through a USB hub. Sony permits only one USB extended-storage drive in use at a time.
- Open the storage menu. On the home screen, go to Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage.
- Format the device. Select Format as USB Extended Storage and confirm the warning. The PS5 will prepare the drive for game storage.
- Wait for completion. Do not unplug the drive while formatting or while data is being transferred.
- Check the result. Return to Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage to view the available space and installed games.
If the console does not offer the format option, check that the cable and drive are connected directly, that the drive is within the 250GB–8TB range, and that it meets the SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps-or-faster requirement. Sony cautions that compatible-looking devices are not guaranteed to work.
Move games between internal and USB storage
Move a game to USB storage
- Open your Game Library from the PS5 home screen.
- Highlight the game, press the Options button on the controller and choose Move Games and Apps.
- Select the game or games, choose the USB extended-storage destination and confirm.
- Keep the console powered and the drive connected until the transfer finishes.
Moving a PS5 game to USB makes room on the console but does not make that game playable from USB. A compatible PS4 game moved there can be launched directly.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Bring a PS5 game back before playing
- Open Game Library and select the game stored on USB extended storage.
- Choose the option to copy or move it to console storage.
- Wait for the transfer to complete, then start the game from the console’s internal storage.
For frequently played PS5 titles, keeping them on internal storage avoids this extra transfer. Use the external drive for games you want available but do not play every day.

- Use the PS5 removal command: Open the control centre, select the USB drive icon and choose the option to stop using or safely remove the extended storage before unplugging it. The exact prompt can vary with system software wording.
- Never disconnect during activity: Wait for installs, moves, saves and downloads involving the drive to finish.
- Keep the cable secure: An accidental disconnect during a write can corrupt game data or the file system.
- Do not share the drive between consoles without planning: Reformatting for another use can erase the existing contents, so back up first.
Common problems and practical fixes
The PS5 says the drive is unsupported
Verify the three Sony fundamentals first: SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later, capacity from 250GB through 8TB, and a direct connection without a hub. Try another compatible USB port and cable if the drive still does not appear. If it remains unrecognized, the device may simply be one Sony does not guarantee, even if its packaging lists a suitable USB version.
A PS5 game on the drive will not start
This is expected behavior, not necessarily a fault. PS5 games cannot run from USB extended storage. Select the title in Game Library and move or copy it to the PS5’s internal storage, then launch it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA PS4 game runs slowly or fails to launch
Confirm that the game is a compatible PS4 title and that the drive is still mounted as USB extended storage. If the console reports corruption, stop using the drive, safely remove it, reconnect it and follow the PS5’s repair or reformat prompts only after backing up anything that can be recovered. Reformatting will erase the drive.
The drive disconnected unexpectedly
Reconnect it only after the console is idle, then check storage status. Avoid loose cables, unpowered hubs and unplugging while transfers are in progress. Use safe removal every time you take the drive off the console.
External hard drive or internal M.2 SSD?
| Question | External USB extended storage | Internal M.2 SSD expansion |
|---|---|---|
| Can it store PS5 games? | Yes | Yes |
| Can it run PS5 games directly? | No; copy them to console storage first | Designed for playable expanded PS5 storage when compatible with PS5 requirements |
| Can it run compatible PS4 games directly? | Yes | Yes, subject to the game and console setup |
| Installation effort | Connect, format and move games | Requires opening the expansion bay and fitting a compatible module |
| Best use | Affordable archive and PS4 library location | Additional space for PS5 games you want to launch without moving them |
Choose external storage when your goal is archiving, reducing downloads or playing PS4 software. Choose an M.2 expansion when repeatedly moving PS5 games would be inconvenient and you want them available to launch from expanded internal storage. They solve different problems; one is not a substitute for the other.
A buying checklist for 2026
- Define the job: Decide whether you need PS4 games playable from USB, a PS5 archive, or both.
- Stay inside Sony’s limits: Verify 250GB–8TB capacity and SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later.
- Check the exact model: A product family can include capacities or revisions with different specifications. Confirm the listing for the model you intend to buy.
- Plan the connection: Leave a direct PS5 USB port available; do not assume a hub will work.
- Budget for transfer time: Every archived PS5 game requires a copy back to internal storage before play.
- Protect existing files: Back up the drive before formatting and use safe removal after each session.
Verdict
For a source-attributed 2026 recommendation, start with the Seagate Game Drive for PS5 identified as TechRadar’s overall pick, choosing among its reported 2TB–5TB capacities. Consider the WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive for PlayStation if its manufacturer-listed capacities up to 6TB better suit your archive or PS4 library. In either case, buy with the same expectation: external USB storage is excellent for keeping PS5 games and playing compatible PS4 games, but every PS5 title must return to internal storage before it can be played.
