The right drive depends on your PS5 model. Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive is the supported add-on for PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 groups and for PS5 Pro consoles in the CFI-7000 group. It is not compatible with the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition. If you own a CFI-1000, you need a PS5 console with an integrated disc drive instead. New buyers should compare the complete cost of a disc-edition console with a supported Digital Edition plus the CFI-ZDD1, using local prices and stock at the time of purchase.
Which PS5 disc-drive option is best?
For an existing compatible console, buy Sony’s PlayStation 5 Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1. It is the only add-on identified by Sony for the PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000/CFI-2100 families and PS5 Pro CFI-7000 systems. The drive reads PS5 game discs, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, Blu-ray discs and DVDs.

There is no supported detachable-drive upgrade for the original PS5 Digital Edition CFI-1000. That model group does not support disc-based games or media, so attempting to buy a CFI-ZDD1 for it risks an incompatible purchase. A console with an integrated drive is the practical route for a CFI-1000 owner who wants a physical library.

The CFI-ZDD1 must be paired with the console over the internet during setup. Sony also notes that operation can depend on the PS5 system-software version, so updating the console is an important first troubleshooting step.

Compatibility at a glance
| Your console | CFI-ZDD1 compatibility | Best action |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 | Supported | Use the CFI-ZDD1 if you want physical games or discs. |
| PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2100 | Supported according to Sony’s accessory information | Confirm the exact model on the console or box, then use the CFI-ZDD1. |
| PS5 Pro CFI-7000 | Supported | Add the CFI-ZDD1 when you need physical games or movie discs. |
| Original PS5 Digital Edition CFI-1000 | Not supported | Use a PS5 model with an integrated disc drive instead. |
Sony’s US setup guide describes compatibility by the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups, while Sony’s accessory information also identifies CFI-2100 Digital Edition consoles. Because model-group documentation can vary by market, check the model number printed on your console or retail box and read the support documentation for the region where you are buying.
What the CFI-ZDD1 can play
The drive is designed for both games and home-video media. Its supported formats are:
- PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs.
- Compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs.
- 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movie discs.
- Standard Blu-ray discs.
- DVD media.
Disc support does not make the PS5 a universal backward-compatibility machine. PS2 and PS3 software cannot be played from a disc on PS5. A PS2 or PS3 disc inserted into the CFI-ZDD1 will not provide a playable version of that game.

PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000
This is the clearest upgrade case. The CFI-ZDD1 is intended for this Digital Edition family, allowing the same console to use physical PS5 and compatible PS4 game discs after installation and online pairing. Check the model number before ordering rather than relying only on a retailer’s description such as “Slim,” because Sony’s compatibility is expressed in CFI model groups.
PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2100
Sony’s accessory information lists CFI-2100 alongside CFI-2000 as a supported Digital Edition family. Confirm that your console actually carries a CFI-2100 designation and that the drive listing and instructions supplied in your market cover that model. If a local manual uses a narrower model-group description, follow the local documentation.
PS5 Pro CFI-7000
The PS5 Pro does not automatically include a disc drive in every configuration. For a CFI-7000 Pro, the CFI-ZDD1 is the supported add-on. This is the appropriate choice if you already own a Pro and want to use a boxed PS5 or PS4 game collection, or if you want the Pro to play movie discs.

Original PS5 Digital Edition CFI-1000
The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is a hard compatibility stop. Sony’s support wording states that the CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media. The CFI-ZDD1 is not a retrofit for this model, so do not buy the accessory expecting the console to gain a disc slot. A disc-edition PS5 is the supported replacement path.
New buyer: integrated drive or Digital Edition plus CFI-ZDD1?
If you are buying a console rather than upgrading one, compare two complete setups:
- Disc-edition PS5: the drive is integrated, so there is no separate accessory installation or pairing purchase.
- Supported Digital Edition plus CFI-ZDD1: the console and drive are bought separately, then physically installed and paired over the internet.
The cheaper choice cannot be declared globally. Retail prices, bundles, inventory, taxes, regional promotions and warranty terms change, and the available evidence does not establish a worldwide street-price winner. Compare the current local total for the console, the CFI-ZDD1 and any delivery or tax charges. Include the value of your existing console: if you already own a compatible Digital Edition or Pro, adding the drive may cost less than replacing the console; if you own a CFI-1000, the add-on is not an option.
| Situation | Decision logic |
|---|---|
| You already own CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 Digital Edition | Compare the local CFI-ZDD1 price with the value and hassle of replacing the console. The accessory preserves your current system. |
| You already own PS5 Pro CFI-7000 | Compare the CFI-ZDD1 cost with buying another console; the accessory is the supported way to add discs to the Pro. |
| You own CFI-1000 Digital Edition | Skip the CFI-ZDD1. Compare a disc-edition PS5 with keeping the CFI-1000 as a separate digital-only console. |
| You have no PS5 yet | Price a disc-edition console against a supported Digital Edition and CFI-ZDD1 together, using current regional listings. |
How to identify your PS5 model before ordering
- Find the CFI model number. Read the label on the console or the original box. Record the complete designation, including the model-group digits.
- Classify the model group. CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 identify supported Digital Edition families; CFI-7000 identifies the PS5 Pro family. CFI-1000 identifies the original Digital Edition that cannot use the add-on.
- Match the region’s documentation. Sony’s US setup guide uses the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups, while other Sony product information names CFI-2100 as well. Use the instructions supplied for your market if they differ.
- Check the product label. The accessory should be identified as the Sony PlayStation 5 Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1. Do not assume that a generic “PS5 disc drive” listing is compatible.
- Keep return terms available. If the model number, regional documentation or package contents do not match the listing, avoid opening the accessory until you have confirmed compatibility.
CFI-ZDD1 physical specifications and installation planning
Sony’s instruction manual lists the drive at approximately 169 × 51 × 190 millimetres and 600 grams. Those dimensions describe the accessory itself, not the additional clearance needed for handling cables, ventilation or disc insertion. Measure the intended position beside your console and leave enough room to install the drive and access the disc slot without forcing the hardware against a wall or shelf.
Plan the installation before opening the package. You need the compatible PS5, the CFI-ZDD1, a stable surface and an internet connection for the pairing stage. The console should be running current system software; Sony warns that drive behaviour can depend on the PS5 software version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInstalling and pairing the drive
- Update the PS5 first. Install the latest system software offered by the console before attaching the drive. This removes a common software-version variable if the drive is not recognised.
- Shut down the console completely. Use the PS5 power controls and wait for the system to turn off before handling the hardware. Do not install the drive while the console is running.
- Prepare a clear work area. Place the console and accessory on a stable, clean surface with room for the approximately 169 × 51 × 190 mm drive and for inserting a disc.
- Attach the CFI-ZDD1 as shown in Sony’s instructions. The exact cover-removal and mounting sequence depends on the console family. Follow the manual supplied for your model rather than applying a CFI-2000 procedure to a CFI-7000 Pro.
- Reconnect and start the PS5. Check that the drive is seated as instructed and that the console’s covers are secured before powering on.
- Connect the console to the internet. Sony’s product page states: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” Keep the connection active until pairing completes.
- Complete the on-screen pairing process. If the PS5 requests a system update or pairing confirmation, finish those prompts before inserting a game or movie disc.
- Test one supported disc. Start with a PS5 game, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game, Blu-ray, DVD or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. If it is recognised, test additional formats separately rather than changing several variables at once.
The online requirement applies to the initial drive-to-console pairing. It is not a reason to reject the accessory if you normally play offline, but you should complete setup while you have reliable internet access.

Using an existing physical game collection
PS5 game discs
Insert a PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray game disc after pairing. The disc provides the physical entitlement, while the console may still need to install game data and download updates. Keep the disc available whenever the installed game requires a disc check; the drive does not turn a disc purchase into a permanently disc-free licence.
PS4 game discs
The CFI-ZDD1 supports compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs. “Compatible” matters: support is for PS4 software that the PS5 itself can run from a Blu-ray game disc, not every older PlayStation format. PS2 and PS3 disc software remains unsupported.
Mixed libraries
If your collection contains both PS5 and PS4 discs, the supported CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000 system with CFI-ZDD1 can serve both categories, subject to PS5 compatibility for the individual PS4 title. Sort discs by platform before troubleshooting so an unsupported PS2 or PS3 disc is not mistaken for a drive fault.

Movie-disc support
The accessory also functions as a movie drive. Sony lists 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media among the supported formats. This makes the CFI-ZDD1 useful for a household that wants one console for physical games and disc movies.
Movie support does not extend to every optical format. The official compatibility information names 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD; it does not establish support for other disc categories. PS2 and PS3 software discs are specifically excluded as playable software.

Do not use an old price as a universal recommendation. The CFI-ZDD1 product page in the UK lists a product date of 1 December 2023 and states a one-year warranty for that storefront. Warranty duration and terms can differ in other countries, so read the local Sony warranty and the retailer’s return policy before purchase.

Stock can also change by region. A drive shown as available in one country may be sold out, bundled differently or covered by different consumer-return rules elsewhere. Check that the seller identifies model CFI-ZDD1, ships the correct regional package and accepts returns if your console model is not supported.

- Ordering for a CFI-1000 Digital Edition: this model cannot use the detachable drive. Verify the CFI number first.
- Relying on “Slim” as the only description: compatibility is defined by CFI model groups, not a nickname. Confirm CFI-2000 or CFI-2100.
- Assuming every PS5 Pro includes a drive: for a CFI-7000 Pro, the CFI-ZDD1 is the add-on identified by Sony when discs are required.
- Skipping the internet requirement: pairing is required during setup. Arrange a connection before installation.
- Installing with outdated software: Sony warns that behaviour can depend on PS5 software version. Update before diagnosing a hardware problem.
- Expecting PS2 or PS3 playback: the CFI-ZDD1 does not make those disc formats playable on PS5.
- Comparing only the accessory price: new buyers should compare the complete console-plus-drive total with a disc-edition console.
- Ignoring regional terms: verify local stock, warranty coverage and return conditions rather than importing solely because a listing appears cheaper.
Troubleshooting after installation
The console does not recognise the drive
Confirm the console’s CFI model group first. A CFI-1000 Digital Edition will not recognise the CFI-ZDD1 because it is unsupported. On a supported CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000, shut the PS5 down, check the physical installation against Sony’s model-specific instructions and restart it. Then verify that the console software is current.
Pairing does not complete
Check the internet connection and retry the setup pairing process. The drive and PS5 must be paired online when first set up. If the connection is working, update the console software and repeat the process. Record any on-screen error before contacting Sony or the seller.
A disc is rejected
Identify the disc type. PS5 game discs, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD are the formats listed for the drive. PS2 and PS3 software discs are not playable on PS5, so rejection of those discs is expected rather than evidence of a defective drive.
Behaviour changes after a system update
Sony notes that drive behaviour can depend on the PS5 software version. Install the current update, restart the console and test a known-supported disc. If the problem remains on a supported model, use the official manual and regional support channel while retaining your purchase and warranty details.
Which option should you buy?
- Own a PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 or CFI-2100: choose the Sony CFI-ZDD1 after checking local price, stock and warranty.
- Own a PS5 Pro CFI-7000: choose the Sony CFI-ZDD1 when you need physical games or disc movies.
- Own the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition: do not buy the add-on; move to a PS5 with an integrated disc drive if physical media is essential.
- Buying a PS5 now: calculate the local all-in cost of a supported Digital Edition plus CFI-ZDD1 and compare it with a disc-edition console. Include taxes, delivery, bundle contents and warranty terms.
The key purchase decision is compatibility, not a universal ranking of detachable drives. Sony identifies the CFI-ZDD1 as the supported accessory for the newer Digital Edition families and PS5 Pro, while the original CFI-1000 requires a different console strategy. Verify the CFI model number, plan for online pairing, and use local pricing and warranty information before placing the order.
