For the fastest practical GTA VI download, connect your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S to the router with Ethernet, stop other network-heavy activity, and leave the console in its supported automatic-download power mode. On PS5, enable Stay Connected to the Internet in Rest Mode and automatic game updates. On Xbox, run the built-in speed test, close any active game or streaming app, and use DNS changes only as troubleshooting—not as a guaranteed speed upgrade.
Rockstar lists GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its current platform information says the physical edition includes a download code and gives a market-specific preload date of November 12. Prepare the connection before preload day, because your internet plan, Wi-Fi conditions, router load and platform-server demand can matter more than any console setting.

The best settings at a glance
Use this order on either console. It removes the most common local bottlenecks before you start changing less certain options.

- Use wired Ethernet. Run a cable from the console to the router when the layout allows it. A Cat6 cable is suitable for either console; the cable itself does not create extra bandwidth, but a direct link avoids many Wi-Fi interference and signal-strength problems.
- Make the console otherwise idle. Close games, video apps and other downloads while GTA VI is transferring. A game left suspended can continue using network bandwidth.
- Check the measured connection. Use the PS5 or Xbox network diagnostics before and after each change so you can tell a real improvement from normal server fluctuations.
- Enable unattended downloading. PS5 needs its Rest Mode internet setting and automatic-download options enabled. Xbox needs automatic updates and a power mode that keeps the console available; menu names can change with system updates.
- Try DNS only when troubleshooting. Manual DNS can help resolve a connection problem in some networks, but the documented support guidance does not promise higher game-download throughput.

Why GTA VI download speed changes from hour to hour
A console reports the rate it is receiving at that moment, not a permanent property of the game or the hardware. Several limits can operate at once:

- ISP capacity: Your broadband plan has a maximum rate, and household traffic shares it. A television stream, cloud backup or another game download can consume capacity before GTA VI receives any data.
- Wi-Fi quality: Distance, walls, neighboring networks, interference from appliances and a busy wireless band can cause retransmissions and lower the usable rate.
- Router congestion: Older or overloaded routers may struggle when several devices connect simultaneously, even when the broadband line itself is fast.
- Platform and game-server demand: A major preload can attract a large number of simultaneous downloads. No PS5 or Xbox setting can force a faster platform server.
- Peak-time congestion: Local access networks and upstream services may be busier in the evening. A speed test at one time is not a promise for preload day.
For a useful comparison, test both consoles on the same router, with the same cable or wireless band, at approximately the same time and with other traffic stopped. A result from a different room, band or time does not establish that one platform is universally faster.
PS5: settings for the fastest practical download
1. Prefer a wired LAN connection
On PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Select the wired LAN connection if the router is close enough for a cable. Complete the connection test and note the result before starting the game download.
A direct Ethernet link is usually the most consistent option because it removes the wireless hop between the console and router. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a sensible length and category for a home setup. It does not raise the speed supplied by your ISP, and a cable cannot overcome a slow or congested game server.

Choose the strongest available Wi-Fi band from the PS5 connection setup. Use the band that gives the console the best measured result rather than assuming that the higher-frequency option is always faster: a faster band can lose more performance through walls and distance.
- Move the router toward a central, open location rather than inside a cabinet or behind large objects.
- Reduce the distance and number of walls between the router and PS5.
- Keep the console away from obvious sources of interference and avoid crowding the router with other electronics.
- Pause large transfers on phones, computers, televisions and smart-home devices while GTA VI downloads.
Broadband expert Max Beckett describes the placement principle this way: “positioning your Wi-Fi router in a central, open area of your home can help maximise speeds.” Router placement helps the local wireless link; it does not increase the capacity of your broadband plan or Rockstar’s servers.
3. Keep the PS5 connected in Rest Mode
To allow an unattended download, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet. The PS5 can then maintain its network connection while in Rest Mode.

Rest Mode is a scheduling and availability feature, not a Sony promise of higher peak throughput. If the console downloads at the same rate while awake, that is normal. Its benefit is that a queued download can continue while you sleep or leave the house.
4. Enable automatic game and application downloads
Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates. Enable Auto-Download and, where shown, Auto-Install in Rest Mode. Keep Stay Connected to the Internet enabled in the Rest Mode menu; automatic downloads depend on that connection being maintained.
These settings are especially useful for a preload. They do not bypass a release schedule, account requirement or server-side availability window. If the download is not yet offered in your market, the PS5 cannot start it early merely because automatic updates are enabled.
5. Stop competing activity before starting GTA VI
Close an active game and streaming applications from the PS5 control center before beginning a large transfer. Also check whether another game, update or cloud-sync operation is running. This is practical bandwidth management rather than a quoted Sony speed guarantee: the goal is to leave more of your existing connection available for the GTA VI download.
6. Use the PS5 test as a baseline
After changing from Wi-Fi to Ethernet, run the PS5 connection test again. Compare the reported result with the first test under similar conditions. If the rate changes only slightly, the limiting factor may be your ISP, household traffic or the remote download service rather than the console connection.
Xbox Series X|S: settings and checks
1. Measure the connection before changing it
On Xbox, open Settings > General > Network settings and run the built-in network speed or network-statistics test. Microsoft can change the exact wording between system updates, so use the current test entry shown on your console. Record the download result and latency, then repeat the test after each major change.

The Xbox measurement is useful for diagnosing your local connection. It still cannot measure every condition at the platform-server end, so a good console result does not guarantee that a busy preload server will deliver the same rate.
2. Close games and bandwidth-heavy apps
Quit any running game and close video or music applications before resuming the GTA VI download. A suspended game or app may continue network activity, and the Xbox may divide available bandwidth between foreground activity and the download.
If the download is already running, pause it, close the competing app, wait a moment and resume. Compare the reported rate after the console becomes idle. Do not treat a brief spike as proof of a lasting improvement; observe the rate for several minutes.

Plug the Xbox directly into the router and select the wired connection in Settings > General > Network settings. Ethernet is most valuable when the console is far from the router, separated by several walls or sharing a crowded wireless channel.
If wiring is impractical, improve the Wi-Fi path instead: place the router in a central open area, reduce obstructions and pause traffic on other devices. A Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router or mesh system can be an optional coverage upgrade for a home with dead zones, but no router category guarantees a specific GTA VI download speed.
4. Keep automatic updates available for unattended downloads
Use the Xbox power and update settings to allow automatic updates, and select an always-available or standby power mode if you want downloads to continue while you are away. Xbox system updates can rename or reorganize these controls, so verify the labels on the current console before relying on an overnight preload.

This setting determines whether the console can perform work unattended. It does not increase the maximum rate while you are actively watching the download.

If the Xbox test is unexpectedly poor, restart both the router and console, then run the test again. A reboot can clear a temporary router state or a stalled network session. Allow the router to finish reconnecting before judging the Xbox result.
6. Treat manual DNS as a troubleshooting experiment
Rockstar documents manual DNS selection as part of connection troubleshooting. On Xbox, open the network settings, choose the advanced network options and enter a DNS service manually only if automatic DNS is producing connection errors or unreliable name resolution.
DNS translates a service name into an address; it does not add bandwidth to your broadband line. If changing DNS makes no measurable difference to a sustained download, return to automatic DNS. Do not keep a manual value solely because a speed test briefly improved during a different server-load period.
Ethernet versus Wi-Fi for GTA VI

Choose Ethernet whenever the cable can be routed safely. If the wireless result is already close to your broadband plan’s normal speed and remains stable, changing hardware may provide little benefit. Measure first rather than buying a router or mesh system on the assumption that its label alone will accelerate the download.
DNS: when changing it is worth trying
DNS is often suggested as a universal gaming-speed tweak, but that is the wrong expectation. A DNS resolver is involved when the console looks up a service address. Once the download connection is established, the amount of game data delivered is governed mainly by the broadband path and the remote service.

Use manual DNS when:
- Automatic DNS fails to resolve the platform or Rockstar service reliably.
- The console reports intermittent connection errors that disappear when another resolver is tested.
- You are following Rockstar’s documented connection-troubleshooting steps and need to isolate name-resolution problems.
Do not use DNS as the first response to a low download rate when the console is on weak Wi-Fi, another device is consuming bandwidth or the platform service is busy. Fix the physical and local-network conditions first, then compare sustained results rather than a single instantaneous reading.
Timing your GTA VI preload
Rockstar’s current platform information lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and gives a market-specific preload date of November 12. Check the store and account region attached to your console because availability windows can differ by market. A physical edition may contain a download code, so the disc package does not necessarily mean all game data is present on the disc.
Rockstar has not published an official GTA VI download-size figure on the cited platform information. A 2026 secondary calculation uses 120GB as an estimate; it is not a confirmed Rockstar size and should not be used as a promise of the final install or download requirement. Leave substantially more free storage than any estimate requires for the download, unpacking and installation process.

Starting early gives the console more time to retry a stalled connection and spreads your transfer across a period that may be less busy. It still cannot eliminate regional or platform-wide demand.

Neither platform can be declared universally faster from the available evidence. A same-network, same-time test is the only meaningful comparison for your home.
Troubleshooting slow or stalled downloads
Both consoles show a low speed
- Stop streaming, cloud backups and other game downloads on every household device.
- Restart the router and wait until its internet connection is fully restored.
- Run the console’s network test while the console is close to the router or connected by Ethernet.
- If the measured rate remains close to your broadband plan’s normal limit, contact the ISP or check for a local outage.
- If local tests are healthy but GTA VI remains slow, wait and retry later; platform-server demand may be the limiting factor.
Wi-Fi is much slower than Ethernet
- Keep the wired connection for the preload if possible.
- Move the router to a central, open position.
- Reduce walls and distance, select the stronger measured Wi-Fi band and remove competing traffic.
- Consider improved coverage hardware only if the wireless signal is the recurring bottleneck; do not expect a guaranteed game-server speed increase.
The download stops in Rest Mode on PS5
- Return to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Confirm Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled.
- Check Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and enable automatic downloading.
- Wake the console, resume the download manually and run the network test if it still does not progress.
Xbox reports a good test but GTA VI remains slow
Close every active game and app, pause and resume the transfer, then observe the rate for several minutes. If the local test remains good and other downloads behave normally, the remote service may be busy. DNS changes are reasonable only when you are diagnosing a connection or resolution error, not as a guaranteed remedy for a crowded server.
