Best PS5 Alternatives if You Can’t Find a PS5 Pro

If the PS5 Pro is sold out, the standard PS5 is the closest replacement because it preserves your PlayStation account, existing game library, DualSense controller and accessories. Choose the PS5 Digital Edition when you want the lowest entry price and buy games digitally. Choose Xbox Series X for a premium living-room console outside PlayStation, a Windows gaming PC for mods and upgrades, or a Steam Deck OLED when portability matters more than console-class performance.

Sony’s U.S. recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 are $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. They are recommended prices, not guarantees of what a retailer will charge today, so verify stock, bundles and the final price before paying.

At a glance: which PS5 Pro alternative fits you?

Your priority Best fit Why it fits Main compromise
Keep PlayStation games and account PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition Same platform family, account, game ecosystem and DualSense controller Lower performance than PS5 Pro; Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive
Premium living-room console outside PlayStation Xbox Series X Microsoft lists a 4K target, up to 120 FPS, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, Quick Resume and fast SSD loading Different exclusives, services, controller layout and account ecosystem
Flexibility, mods and upgrades Windows gaming PC Multiple storefronts, broad software support, upgradeable hardware and use beyond games Configuration, setup and total-cost complexity
Portable PC gaming Steam Deck OLED Handheld SteamOS system with built-in controls and access to a portable Steam library Different performance target, battery limits and game-compatibility considerations

There is no universal replacement. The right choice depends on whether the PS5 Pro’s appeal was its PlayStation ecosystem, higher image quality on a 4K television, premium fixed-console experience, PC flexibility or the ability to play away from the television.

What you would be giving up without a PS5 Pro

Sony positions the PS5 Pro around three benefits: advanced ray tracing, sharper image clarity on 4K televisions and higher frame rates in games that receive PS5 Pro enhancements. Those improvements are not automatic in every title; they depend on a game having a PS5 Pro-enhanced mode or patch. A substitute therefore has to be judged against the feature you actually wanted, not against the Pro name alone.

#1 Best Overall
Xbox Series X 1TB Gaming Console Console + 1 Wireless Controller - Backward Compatible with Thousands of Games, Fine-Tuned Performance, True 4K Gaming, Up to 120 FPS - HDMI_Cable
  • What's in the box: Xbox Series X console, 1 Xbox Wireless Controller - Carbon Black, Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, Power cord.
  • Equipped with AMD's Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures, DirectX ray tracing delivers true-to-life lighting, shadows and accurate reflections to create dynamic, living worlds.
  • Memory: 16GB GDDR6 w/320 bit-wide bus; Memory Bandwidth: 10 GB @ 560 GB/s, 6 GB @ 336 GB/s; Internal Storage: 1TB Custom NVME SSD
  • Gaming Resolution: True 4K; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; High Dynamic Range: Up to 8K HDR; Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-Ray; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
  • Bundled with HDMI_Cable

The standard PS5 family gives up some of that headroom but keeps the same account and platform. Xbox Series X pursues a similar premium living-room role with different games and services. A PC can exceed a console’s flexibility, but only after you choose and pay for a complete configuration. Steam Deck OLED changes the goal entirely by prioritising handheld play over 4K television output and maximum frame rates.

Option 1: Standard PS5—the closest PS5 Pro substitute

Buy a standard PS5 when your first concern is continuing to play the games you already own or plan to buy on PlayStation. Your PlayStation account, digital purchases, saved-game ecosystem, DualSense controller and familiar system software remain in the same platform family. That continuity is the main reason the standard PS5 is a better substitute than a technically impressive console on another network.

PS5 with disc drive

Sony’s current product page lists the PS5 as a 1TB console that plays both PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray Disc. It suits households with a physical collection, buyers who borrow or resell discs, and anyone who wants the option of buying either physical or digital games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The disc model is also the simpler choice if you do not want to make storage and purchasing decisions around a download-only library. You can still download digital games and updates; the disc drive simply preserves an additional purchasing and playback option.

PS5 Digital Edition

The PS5 Digital Edition is listed with 825GB of storage and no disc drive. Sony’s April 2, 2026 U.S. recommended price is $599.99, compared with $649.99 for the 1TB PS5. That $50 difference is a recommended-price gap, not a promise that every retailer will maintain it.

Choose it if you buy games digitally, do not need Blu-ray discs and want the lower official starting price. Because every game must be downloaded or purchased digitally, check your broadband capacity and available storage before choosing it. Large modern games can make an 825GB internal drive feel less forgiving than the nominal number suggests, especially after system software and other reserved space are accounted for.

Adding a drive later

Sony lists a separately sold removable disc drive compatible with the slim CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Edition models and with PS5 Pro. Confirm the exact model number and the drive’s current price before buying; compatibility is model-specific, and the total cost of a Digital Edition plus a later drive can narrow or erase the initial saving.

How the standard PS5 compares with PS5 Pro features

Consideration Standard PS5 family PS5 Pro positioning
PlayStation account and library Yes; same platform family Yes
Disc choices 1TB PS5 includes Blu-ray Disc; Digital Edition has no built-in drive Removable drive sold separately where compatible
Ray tracing Standard console feature set Advanced ray tracing in supported experiences
4K television image Standard PS5 image output Sony markets sharper 4K-TV image clarity
Frame-rate headroom Standard PS5 performance Higher frame rates in PS5 Pro-enhanced games
U.S. recommended price effective April 2, 2026 $649.99 PS5; $599.99 PS5 Digital Edition $899.99

The Pro column describes Sony’s positioning, not a guarantee that every game receives every improvement. If you mostly play titles without a Pro-enhanced mode, the standard PS5’s lower price and identical platform may matter more than the missing premium effects.

When the standard PS5 is the right purchase

  • You already own PlayStation digital games or have friends and subscriptions tied to PlayStation.
  • You want to keep using a DualSense controller and existing PlayStation accessories.
  • You have a 4K television but do not require the highest possible image quality in every supported game.
  • You prefer a disc library, in which case the 1TB PS5 avoids the Digital Edition’s drive limitation.
  • You want to spend less than the PS5 Pro’s $899.99 U.S. recommended price.

Option 2: Xbox Series X—the premium fixed-console alternative

Xbox Series X is the strongest non-PlayStation choice for a buyer who still wants a powerful console connected to a television. Microsoft’s current product page lists three configurations: a 1TB disc model, a 1TB all-digital model and a 2TB disc model. The availability and street price of each configuration can differ, so treat those as hardware choices rather than a guarantee that every store carries all three.

  • UP TO 120 FPS GAMEPLAY — Enjoy smooth, responsive gaming with frame rates up to 120 FPS, powered by XBOX Velocity Architecture, a custom NVMe SSD, and DirectX Raytracing for a heightened level of realism.

  • QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.

What Xbox Series X offers

Microsoft advertises true 4K gaming, support for up to 120 FPS, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, Quick Resume and faster loading from a custom SSD. Those are platform capabilities and targets; an individual game may use a different resolution or frame-rate mode, and a television must support the relevant refresh rate to show more than 60 frames per second.

Quick Resume is useful when several supported games are in rotation: you can suspend games and return to them without a full restart in many cases. The SSD reduces loading compared with older hard-drive consoles, although game design, updates and online sign-in can still affect how quickly a title reaches play.

Disc, digital and 2TB configurations

Configuration Storage listed by Microsoft Drive format Best fit
Xbox Series X 1TB 1TB Disc Players who want a premium Xbox console and physical-game option
Xbox Series X 1TB all-digital 1TB All-digital Players committed to downloads and subscriptions
Xbox Series X 2TB 2TB Disc Large libraries and buyers who want physical media with more internal capacity

The 2TB figure is capacity, not a promise that twice as many games will fit; installed sizes vary widely. The all-digital model removes disc purchases, lending and resale, so compare the complete ownership cost of digital games and subscriptions with the price of the disc model you are considering.

Smart Delivery and the ecosystem change

Microsoft says Smart Delivery supplies the best available version of supported games for the Xbox console being used. That is valuable for a household that moves between compatible Xbox hardware, but it does not make Xbox and PlayStation libraries interchangeable. A PlayStation digital purchase will not become an Xbox license, and your PlayStation friends list, trophies and account services do not transfer into the Xbox ecosystem.

Before switching, write down the games you play every month and check whether each is available on Xbox, whether multiplayer requires a different subscription, and whether your friends are active on that platform. A console with stronger specifications is not a good substitute if it cannot run the games or social features that matter to you.

When Xbox Series X makes more sense than another PS5

  • You are willing to change ecosystems and want a premium living-room machine rather than another PlayStation.
  • You want a choice of 1TB disc, 1TB all-digital or 2TB disc hardware.
  • You value the combination of a 4K target, up to 120 FPS support, ray tracing and Quick Resume.
  • You are building a library around Xbox purchases and services rather than carrying over PlayStation licenses.

Option 3: Windows gaming PC—the flexible alternative

A Windows gaming PC is the broadest alternative because it can combine gaming with work, creative software, web use, mods, multiple storefronts and future hardware upgrades. It is also the least comparable on a single specification sheet. There is no fixed PC model or universal price that represents the category, so a fair comparison must name a complete build and local price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Budget for the whole system

Do not compare a console’s retail price with the cost of a bare graphics card. A usable PC budget includes the tower, processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage, power supply, cooling and case. Add a Windows license where applicable, plus a display, keyboard, mouse, speakers or headset and a controller if you prefer console-style play.

Storage deserves special attention. A low-cost build with a small drive can look attractive until several large games, updates and creative applications consume the available space. Conversely, paying for more graphics performance without a display capable of showing the result may not improve your experience. Decide on the resolution and refresh rate you will actually use before selecting parts.

What you gain

  • Mods: Many PC games support community-created modifications that are unavailable on consoles.
  • Store choice: You can use more than one PC storefront instead of being locked to a single console store.
  • Upgrade path: Depending on the case, motherboard and power supply, you can replace storage, memory or graphics hardware later.
  • Non-gaming use: The same system can handle office work, photo and video tools, programming and other software.
  • Control options: You can use a mouse and keyboard, a controller or specialist peripherals.

What you must manage

Windows gaming requires more hands-on maintenance than a console. Expect operating-system updates, graphics-driver updates, launcher accounts, changing graphics settings and occasional troubleshooting. Hardware compatibility matters: a new graphics card may require a stronger power supply, adequate case clearance and sufficient cooling. A prebuilt system reduces assembly work but still requires checking the exact processor, graphics card, memory, storage and warranty rather than relying on a broad product name.

  • TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
  • 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.

  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.

Game performance is configuration-dependent. Two PCs both described as gaming systems can have very different results because of graphics hardware, processor limits, memory capacity, cooling and the game’s own settings. Ask for a complete parts list and a local total before concluding that a PC is cheaper or faster than a console.

When to choose a PC

  • You want mods, several storefronts or software that a console cannot run.
  • You are comfortable selecting parts or verifying a detailed prebuilt specification.
  • You need one machine for gaming and other computing tasks.
  • You accept driver updates, game-launcher management and more troubleshooting in exchange for flexibility.
  • You plan to upgrade over time rather than replace the entire platform at once.

Option 4: Steam Deck OLED—the portability-first alternative

Steam Deck OLED is a handheld gaming PC built around SteamOS, with integrated controls and a portable Steam library. Valve’s device is best understood as a change in format, not a smaller PS5 Pro. Its design prioritises handheld play, battery operation and a built-in screen rather than 4K television output or console-class performance targets.

Why it appeals

  • You can play compatible Steam games away from the television.
  • Controls, screen and operating system are integrated into one handheld device.
  • Your Steam purchases are available through the same PC storefront account.
  • It can complement a living-room console when you want a second, portable way to play.

Important limitations

Battery life varies with game workload, display settings and power use. Game compatibility also varies: some titles work immediately, while others may need control adjustments, a different compatibility layer or may not work well at all. Performance is constrained by a handheld power envelope, so Steam Deck OLED should not be presented as a guaranteed 4K or 120-FPS machine.

It also does not carry over PlayStation purchases. If your must-play list is mostly PlayStation exclusives or games tied to your console account, a Steam Deck is a second platform rather than a replacement. If your library is primarily on Steam and portability is the deciding factor, the trade-off can be worthwhile.

How to choose without overspending

Start with your existing library

  1. List the games you play most often and mark whether each license is on PlayStation, Xbox or PC.
  2. Separate single-player games from multiplayer games that depend on where your friends play.
  3. Check whether your physical games require a disc drive. This immediately rules out a digital-only console for those titles unless you repurchase them.
  4. Identify games that specifically benefit from PS5 Pro enhancements. If only a small part of your library uses those modes, a standard PS5 may deliver the better overall value.

Match the display and room

A television is part of the decision. The PS5 Pro’s appeal is most visible to people who care about image clarity, ray tracing and frame rate on a 4K television. Xbox Series X’s up-to-120-FPS capability also requires a display with a suitable refresh rate, and the game must offer a mode that uses it. A handheld such as Steam Deck OLED has its own built-in screen, while a PC requires you to budget for a monitor if you do not already have one.

Calculate the complete cost

  • Use Sony’s $649.99 PS5, $599.99 PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 PS5 Pro figures only as U.S. recommended prices effective April 2, 2026.
  • For a Digital Edition, include the cost of any games you would otherwise buy on disc and the separately sold removable drive if you may want physical media later.
  • For Xbox, compare the exact 1TB disc, 1TB all-digital or 2TB disc configuration rather than assuming every Series X listing is the same.
  • For a PC, total the tower, operating system where needed, display, input devices, storage and controller before comparing it with a console.
  • For Steam Deck OLED, include a case, storage expansion or dock only if you actually need them; accessories can change the handheld’s final cost.

Check the ecosystem before ordering

Confirm the multiplayer services, friends list, saves, subscriptions and storefront licenses for the platform you are considering. Smart Delivery can provide the best supported Xbox version across Xbox hardware, but it does not transfer PlayStation licenses. Steam Deck uses SteamOS and Steam purchases, not PlayStation or Xbox libraries. A lower purchase price can become expensive if you must repurchase your essential games.

Buying when stock is uncertain

Stock, bundles and retailer prices can change quickly. Check the seller’s live listing immediately before checkout and confirm whether the product is new, refurbished, region-specific or bundled with accessories. Compare the advertised total after shipping and taxes, not only the headline console price.

For the PS5 family, verify whether a listing is the 1TB disc PS5 or the 825GB Digital Edition. For a Digital Edition, confirm the exact slim CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 model if you are planning to add Sony’s removable drive. For Xbox, read the storage and drive description carefully because Microsoft lists three Series X configurations. For a PC, save the complete component list and warranty details before paying. For Steam Deck OLED, check the storage tier and return policy, then confirm that your most important games are compatible with SteamOS.

A practical decision path

  1. Need your PlayStation library today? Buy the available standard PS5. Select the 1TB disc version if you use physical games; select the 825GB Digital Edition if you are committed to downloads.
  2. Want a premium console but can change ecosystems? Compare Xbox Series X configurations, then verify your games and friends are available on Xbox.
  3. Want mods, upgrades and one computer for everything? Choose a complete Windows PC configuration and price the entire setup, not just one component.
  4. Want to play primarily away from the television? Choose Steam Deck OLED, accepting its handheld performance target and compatibility checks.
  5. Still unsure? Prioritise the platform that already contains your games and social connections. Hardware advantages matter less when the software you use is elsewhere.

Bottom line

The standard PS5 is the safest PS5 Pro substitute because it keeps your PlayStation account, library and accessories while costing less at Sony’s April 2, 2026 U.S. recommended prices. The PS5 Digital Edition saves more up front but removes the built-in disc drive and has 825GB of listed storage. Xbox Series X is the premium living-room alternative outside PlayStation, Windows PC is the flexibility and upgrade choice, and Steam Deck OLED is the portability choice—not a like-for-like PS5 Pro performance replacement.
