It is also more practical than buying a specialized accessory when your current pain point is simply having only one working controller. Check that any replacement or additional unit is a PS5-compatible DualSense model; PS4-era controllers do not provide the same PS5 game support.

Choose the dock when cable swapping is the annoyance, rather than because it improves controller performance. Place it where controllers are normally put down, and return both controllers after a session. Sony has also described an adaptive-charging feature for slim PS5 and PS5 Pro conditions that can reduce console energy use by up to 80% after accessory charging completes. That figure is a maximum reduction under the stated conditions, not a universal saving for every PS5 model or room setup.
3. Headsets for 3D audio and chat
PULSE 3D
Sony describes PULSE 3D as a wireless headset tuned for PS5 3D Audio. It uses USB-C charging and dual noise-cancelling microphones, making it a straightforward choice for players who want positional game sound and integrated party chat without a separate microphone.
Other PlayStation audio formats
PlayStation’s current accessory catalog also lists PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore. The right form factor is personal: over-ear headphones can provide a more enclosing fit, while earbuds are less bulky. Compare the wireless connection, microphone design, comfort, battery arrangement and fit for your sessions. A headset is an upgrade rather than a requirement. If you play mostly single-player games through a television or sound system, spend on storage or a second controller first. If you rely on party chat or need to hear directional cues, audio moves higher up the list.
4. Expanding PS5 storage with an internal SSD
Storage is the clearest reason to buy an SSD: modern games can consume enough space that deleting and redownloading becomes part of every new installation. PlayStation’s current catalog lists the officially licensed Western Digital SN850P SSD as expanding PS5 internal storage by up to 8TB.

5. PS5 Media Remote for streaming
The Media Remote is worthwhile when the PS5 is also your streaming box. Dedicated playback and navigation buttons are easier for many households than turning on a game controller every time someone wants to pause, seek or switch media.
It does not improve frame rates, loading times or game controls. If the PS5 is used only for games, the controller already covers the basic system menus and the remote is a lower-priority purchase.

6. PlayStation Portal for remote play
PlayStation Portal is a specialized remote player rather than a second console. It is intended for compatible games streamed from your PS5 over home Wi-Fi, so network conditions are a prerequisite. A strong, consistent connection between the console, router and handheld matters more than buying the device alone.

PlayStation Access is an accessibility-oriented controller listed in Sony’s accessory catalog. Its value depends on the player’s movement, reach, mounting and button-access needs. Discuss the intended control setup first, including any compatible accessories or alternate input devices required; buying it without that plan can leave important functions inaccessible.
Camera and VR-related accessories are similarly specialized. Buy them for a specific supported game or use case, not as general upgrades to image quality or console performance.
How to choose in the right order
- Name the interruption. Is the problem another player, an empty controller, missing storage, weak chat, media navigation or access requirements?
- Check compatibility. Confirm the exact PS5 model, the accessory’s connection method and any game, network or software prerequisites.
