The sensible reason to choose a drive in this class is capacity plus a PS5-ready physical fit, not a promise of higher frame rates or image quality. An SSD does not turn the base PS5 into a PS5 Pro, and it does not add PSSR or ray tracing. Its practical benefit is keeping more games installed and reducing the friction of storage management.
How to install and format an M.2 SSD
- Back up important data. Sync saves to your preferred PlayStation backup method and close every game. An M.2 installation is hardware work, so do not begin while the console is running.
- Update the PS5. Install the latest available system software before fitting the drive. Compatibility checks and storage menus can change with firmware.
- Shut down completely and unplug the console. Do not use Rest Mode for the installation. Let the console cool, disconnect cables, and place it on a stable, clean surface.
- Open the expansion bay. Follow the current PS5 hardware guide for your console revision. Remove the bay cover, unscrew the expansion-slot spacer, set the spacer for the drive’s length, insert the M.2 at an angle, press it flat and secure it with the supplied screw.
- Confirm the heatsink and cover fit. The heatsink must be attached correctly, must not touch unrelated components and must allow the expansion-bay cover to close without force.
- Reconnect and start the PS5. The console should detect the new drive and offer to format it. Formatting erases the drive, so verify that it contains no needed data.
- Format through the on-screen prompt or storage settings. The relevant menu is under Settings > Storage > M.2 SSD Storage. Choose the format option only after checking that the console identifies the intended drive.
- Move or install Ghost of Yōtei. In Settings > Storage, select console storage and use the move or copy command for the game. You can also select the M.2 destination when installing compatible PS5 software.
- Test the installation. Launch the game, confirm your save appears, and listen for unusual drive or fan behavior. If the PS5 reports an incompatible drive, power down and recheck the model, heatsink dimensions and seating rather than repeatedly formatting it.
SSD mistakes that cause trouble
- Buying on speed alone: A large sequential-read number does not prove the drive fits the PS5 bay or includes a suitable heatsink.
- Using the wrong physical size: M.2 drives come in different lengths and thicknesses. Match the console’s supported dimensions and cover clearance.
- Forcing the cover: Resistance usually means the heatsink or spacer position needs checking.
- Confusing USB and M.2 storage: A USB drive can be excellent for archiving, but it is not the same as an internal M.2 expansion for playing PS5 games.

Wireless is attractive when you want to move around, keep the DualSense cable-free and avoid a lead across the room. Check the exact package for its PS5 connection method, battery-life rating and included dongle. Before a long session, verify that the dongle is recognized, the headset is selected as the output device and the microphone is muted or unmuted as intended. Battery life is a convenience factor, not a substitute for comfort; a lighter headset that you can wear for several hours can be preferable to a heavier model with a larger stated battery.
Drop + EPOS PC38X with Creative Sound BlasterX G6: wired example
The same TechRadar review used a Drop + EPOS PC38X with a Creative Sound BlasterX G6 on PS5 Pro. A wired setup avoids headset charging and can provide consistent monitoring, but it adds a cable and an extra device to configure. Confirm where the console, controller or audio interface is receiving the microphone signal, and keep the cable clear of your chair and charging area.
For either setup, test dialogue, quiet environmental details and louder effects at a volume that remains comfortable. Use the PS5’s audio output and microphone menus to select the correct device, then adjust game/chat balance while in a safe area. Spatial-audio support can improve positional cues, but the result depends on the headset’s fit, the console settings and your own hearing; treat it as a tuning option rather than a guaranteed advantage.

- Connection: Decide between a USB wireless adapter, another supported wireless method or a 3.5mm wired connection.
- Latency: Prefer a gaming-focused connection with stable synchronization; audible delay is distracting during combat and traversal.

Which controller should you buy?
A DualSense is central to the intended experience because Sony says Ghost of Yōtei uses haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. If your existing controller has reliable sticks, triggers and battery life, you do not need a new one to access those features.

This is the clearest choice if the artwork matters to you or you want a keepsake tied directly to the game. Buy from an authorized retailer, inspect the seal and retain proof of purchase. Do not pay a premium merely to obtain haptics or adaptive triggers; a standard DualSense supplies those core functions.

Standard DualSense as the practical purchase
A second standard controller makes more sense when you play local multiplayer, want a charged spare, or need a replacement while another controller is being serviced. Compare the current price, color availability, battery condition, return window and warranty. For a used controller, test both analog sticks for drift, confirm adaptive-trigger resistance, check every face button and verify that the USB-C port charges reliably.
Set up the controller for the game
- Pair the controller with the PS5 using a USB cable, then press the PS button.
- Install any available controller firmware update when the console requests it.
- In Settings > Accessories > Controller (General), choose vibration and trigger-effect strength that remains comfortable for your hands.
- Charge before a long session and keep a second controller connected only when needed; constant charging can add cable clutter.
- If a trigger or stick behaves abnormally, reset the controller with the small rear reset button, reconnect it by USB and test again before opening a support claim.
What the official Ghost of Yōtei PS5 bundle means for buyers
PlayStation Direct lists a Ghost of Yōtei Black Limited Edition PS5 Console Bundle with 1TB of built-in storage and an ultra-high-speed SSD. This is relevant when you do not yet own a PS5: it combines the console and themed design in one purchase. It is not an accessory upgrade for an existing PS5, and the listed 1TB capacity should not be confused with an additional 1TB expansion drive.
Check the current bundle contents, regional price, release availability and return terms directly with the retailer before ordering. If you already own a PS5, compare the cost of an M.2 SSD and the controller separately; buying a second console solely for extra storage is a different decision.

- Check your console first. Identify whether you own a standard PS5, PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro, check free storage and inspect your current DualSense.
- Fix the actual constraint. Buy an M.2 SSD only when storage management is the problem; buy a headset when audio comfort or chat is the problem; buy a controller when the existing one is worn or you want the themed design.
- Set a capacity target. Compare price per terabyte and warranty, then choose a drive that fits the PS5 bay with a suitable heatsink.
- Choose audio for your room and habits. Wireless suits cable-free seating; wired suits users who prefer no battery management and a direct connection.
