The best direct alternative to a PlayStation Portal is a phone running Sony’s PS Remote Play app with a Backbone One-PlayStation Edition controller. It uses hardware many people already own, keeps the controls attached to the screen and follows Sony’s documented mobile setup. If you prefer a full-size controller or a larger display, pair a phone or tablet with a DualSense. Steam Deck, ROG Ally and dedicated Android streaming handhelds make sense only when PC games or several cloud services matter as much as PS5 Remote Play.
Remote Play quality depends more on your console and network path than on a handheld’s raw processor. The guide below separates officially documented client combinations from devices that need workarounds, then gives setup, buying and troubleshooting steps.

Quick answer: which alternative fits you?
| Choose this | Best for | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Phone plus Backbone One-PlayStation Edition | The most direct, compact and inexpensive route when you already own a compatible phone | Phone battery, notifications, screen size and comfort become part of the handheld experience |
| Phone or tablet plus DualSense | A familiar full-size controller that can move between mobile, Mac and Windows | It is less compact than an integrated controller and some PS5 features vary outside the console |
| Logitech G Cloud or another Android streaming handheld | A dedicated screen with integrated controls and several cloud-gaming services | Logitech G Cloud does not run the PS Remote Play app, and other Android models require individual checks |
| Steam Deck or ROG Ally | Native PC games first, with PS5 streaming as a secondary use | More weight, configuration and battery trade-offs; Sony support is not uniform across these devices |
For a reader whose only goal is playing a PS5 away from the television, start with the phone-and-Backbone combination. Move to DualSense when controller quality, tablet use or computer support matters more than pocketability. Buy a PC or cloud handheld only if its non-PlayStation uses justify the additional complexity.

Sony’s Remote Play service streams a PS4 or PS5 console to a compatible client. Every setup needs the console, a PlayStation account, the free PS Remote Play app and a supported phone, tablet, computer or handheld configuration. Most clients also need a controller; touch controls are available only where Sony and the particular game support them.

Internet and network thresholds
Sony lists 5 Mbps broadband as the minimum and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those are connection-rate requirements, not a guarantee of low delay. A fast connection with unstable Wi-Fi can feel worse than a slower, steady link. Keep the console on wired Ethernet when practical, use a strong 5 GHz or newer Wi-Fi signal for the client, and avoid heavy uploads on the same network.
Games and features that do not stream
Remote Play excludes titles that require PlayStation VR, other special peripherals or PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming. Remote Play is a stream from your own console; it is not a replacement for a Premium streaming entitlement. A game must also be installed and ready on the PS4 or PS5.
Official computer baselines
Sony’s PC and Mac documentation lists Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, a seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later, 2 GB of RAM, 100 MB of storage, a 1024×768 display and a USB port for Windows. Mac support covers macOS Big Sur through Tahoe, with 2 GB of RAM and 40 MB of storage. A DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4 can serve as the controller on supported computer configurations.
Alternative 1: phone plus Backbone One-PlayStation Edition
This is the closest Portal-style arrangement without buying another dedicated console accessory. The phone runs the official PS Remote Play app, while the telescoping controller supplies two analog sticks, a directional pad, face buttons and shoulder controls around the screen.
Compatibility you should verify
Sony lists Android phones running Android 10.0 or later as compatible with the Backbone One-PlayStation Edition. The edition matters: Backbone says its Android Standard Edition is not officially supported by the official PS Remote Play app. Do not assume that two controllers with similar names have the same Sony compatibility.

On iPhone or iPad, check the current Backbone model and the iOS or iPadOS requirement before ordering. Connector type, device dimensions, camera-bump clearance and operating-system support can change between generations.
Setup steps
- Update the phone to a supported operating-system version and install the official PS Remote Play app.
- Confirm that the PS5 is linked to the same PlayStation account you will use in the app and that Remote Play is enabled in the console’s settings.
- Plug the PlayStation Edition controller into the phone. Grant any requested permissions, then open the Remote Play app.
- Sign in, select the PS5 and wait for the console screen to appear. If the app cannot find the console, use the console’s pairing option and follow the displayed code procedure.
- Start with the phone close to the router. Test a game with fast camera movement before relying on the setup away from home.
Why this option works well
- Controls and display travel as one unit, so there is no separate controller to pack.
- The phone can switch back to ordinary calls, navigation and other apps when you finish playing.
- If you already own a suitable phone, the additional hardware is limited to the controller rather than a complete handheld.
Where it falls short
- A phone receives notifications and calls unless you enable a gaming focus or do-not-disturb mode.
- Long sessions depend on the phone’s battery and thermal behavior. Charging while playing may require a cable arrangement that is uncomfortable with some cases.
- Screen size, aspect ratio and grip comfort vary by phone. A large phone may be more immersive but heavier in the controller.
- Some DualSense capabilities are not present because the Backbone is a different controller and mobile Remote Play does not reproduce every PS5 feature.
Alternative 2: phone or tablet plus DualSense
A DualSense paired with the official app is the flexible choice when you want Sony’s familiar layout and may alternate between a mobile screen, tablet, Mac and Windows computer. A tablet gives a larger viewing area, while a phone remains easier to carry; in both cases the controller stays separate from the display.

| Client | DualSense requirement listed by Sony | Connection note |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Android 12 or later | Pair through the device’s Bluetooth settings when supported |
| iPhone and iPad | iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later | Use Bluetooth pairing and keep the controller firmware current |
| Mac | macOS 11.3 or later | Bluetooth is supported on compatible Macs |
| Windows | Supported Windows Remote Play configuration | Sony documents USB use for the controller |
Sony cautions that haptic feedback and adaptive-trigger availability varies outside PS5. Treat the DualSense as a reliable input device first; do not buy a phone or computer setup expecting every tactile effect to survive the stream.
Setup steps for mobile
- Install or update the PS Remote Play app and confirm the phone or tablet meets the operating-system requirement for the controller.
- Put the DualSense in pairing mode by holding the Create and PS buttons until the light bar flashes.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the client, select the controller and complete pairing.
- Launch Remote Play, sign in and select the PS5. Keep the controller connected while the app establishes the stream.
- On Windows, use the USB connection specified by Sony if Bluetooth input is unreliable or unavailable.
When a tablet is the better screen
A tablet can be easier to read for strategy games, menus and text-heavy interfaces, and it avoids the narrow grip limits of a phone-mounted controller. The cost is a two-piece setup: you need a stand or a surface for the tablet and a way to carry the DualSense. A tablet also has to maintain a strong Wi-Fi connection while the controller communicates separately over Bluetooth or USB.
Alternative 3: Logitech G Cloud and other Android streaming handhelds
Dedicated Android streaming handhelds offer an integrated screen and controls without consuming your phone. They can be attractive if you use several cloud services or want a device reserved for play, but Android compatibility is not the same as official PS Remote Play support.
Rank #3
- Collapsible and compact design
- Lowest latency connection
- Play games that support controllers
- Capture clips and screenshots
- Pass-through charging and 3.5mm headphone jack
Logitech G Cloud’s specific limitation
TechRadar describes Logitech G Cloud as a cloud-gaming handheld and reports that it does not work with the PS Remote Play app. It can still be useful for services that support its Android environment, but it should not be presented as a direct Sony-supported replacement for a Portal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChecks for another Android handheld
Before buying a different model, verify all of the following for that exact firmware and controller configuration:
- Whether the official PS Remote Play app installs from the device’s app store.
- Whether the app recognizes the built-in controls without a third-party mapper.
- Whether the manufacturer’s Android version and Google service configuration are supported.
- Whether sleep, wake and charging behavior interrupt a long stream.
- Whether the display, sticks and shoulder buttons are comfortable for the games you play.
Even when the app installs, an unrecognized control layout can leave you remapping buttons or using touch overlays. That setup may work for a technical hobbyist but is not as predictable as a documented phone-and-controller combination.
Alternative 4: Steam Deck or ROG Ally
These are multifunction PC handhelds, not simple Remote Play clients. Their strongest reason to exist is access to a PC game library, launchers and Windows applications; PS5 streaming is a secondary project.
ROG Ally
ROG Ally runs Windows, so it can install Windows applications and PC storefronts alongside a Remote Play client. That flexibility also means desktop configuration, updates, sign-in prompts and controller-mode changes can appear during setup. The cited Sony requirements describe Windows computers, but they do not establish a guaranteed, handheld-specific experience for every Windows gaming device.

Steam Deck
Steam Deck has a large PC handheld library. The cited comparison describes PS5 streaming through third-party software rather than an official Sony support path. Configuration can involve installing software outside the normal game-library workflow, mapping controls and troubleshooting updates. Do not assume that a method working on one SteamOS release will remain identical after a system or client update.
Who should choose a PC handheld
- Choose one when native PC games are your primary reason for buying the device.
- Accept a heavier body, different battery priorities and more setup than a phone controller.
- Keep a DualSense or another known-good controller available if the handheld’s built-in mapping is not recognized by the streaming client.
- Regard PS5 Remote Play as a possible workaround, not a guaranteed feature, until you have verified the exact software path for your model.

Choose by your actual priority
You already own a modern phone
Start with the Backbone One-PlayStation Edition if its connector and operating-system requirements fit your phone. This minimizes new hardware and gives the most Portal-like control layout.
You want the best controller feel
Use a DualSense with a phone or tablet. It is the better fit for games where full-size sticks, triggers and a familiar grip matter more than having a single integrated unit.
You want the largest practical mobile screen
Use a tablet with DualSense, provided the tablet’s operating system and wireless connection meet the documented requirements. Plan for a stand and a carrying case because the setup is no longer pocket-sized.

You want a PC library first
Choose Steam Deck or ROG Ally for native PC games and treat PS5 streaming as an experiment that may require third-party software or extra controller configuration.
Network and console setup for a stable stream
- On the PS5, open Settings, then System, Remote Play and enable Enable Remote Play.
- Enable rest-mode network features so the console can be reached when it is not fully powered on. The exact wording can vary by system software version.
- Connect the console to the router by Ethernet if possible. If it must use Wi-Fi, prefer the least congested band and keep it within strong signal range.
- Install the current PS Remote Play app on the chosen client and sign in with the account linked to the console.
- Run the first test on the home network. Confirm that the app finds the console, controls respond and audio remains synchronized.
- Test away from home only after the local test succeeds. Mobile data can work, but usage is subject to your carrier’s allowance and coverage.
- Close downloads, cloud backups and video uploads on the same connection. These can create delay even when a speed test shows adequate throughput.
Troubleshooting common failures
The app cannot find the PS5
- Confirm that the console and client use the same PlayStation account.
- Check that Remote Play is enabled and that the console is awake or configured for network access in rest mode.
- Try the first connection on the same home network, then use the console’s pairing-code process if automatic discovery fails.
Buttons do nothing or are mapped incorrectly
- On mobile, confirm that the controller is paired before opening the Remote Play session.
- With Backbone, verify that you bought the PlayStation Edition rather than the Android Standard Edition that Backbone says is not officially supported by the official app.
- On an Android handheld or PC handheld, check whether the app recognizes native controls; avoid assuming that a generic gamepad mapper is equivalent to official support.
The picture is blurry or keeps disconnecting
- Move the client closer to the router and stop competing downloads or uploads.
- Use Ethernet for the console and a stable 5 GHz or newer Wi-Fi connection for the client where available.
- Test at the recommended 15 Mbps level rather than treating the 5 Mbps minimum as a quality target.
- If the problem occurs only on mobile data, compare another location or network before changing hardware.
Haptics or adaptive triggers are missing
This can be normal outside a PS5. Sony states that DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive-trigger availability varies by device and connection. Confirm the game and client combination before treating the missing effect as a hardware fault.
Costs and ownership trade-offs without misleading price claims
The phone-and-Backbone route usually has the lowest additional hardware requirement when a compatible phone is already available. DualSense adds a separate controller but can serve several screens and computers. A dedicated Android handheld adds an entire battery, display and control system, while a Steam Deck or ROG Ally costs more in hardware complexity because it is designed to run native PC software as well as streams.
No controlled figures for current street prices, battery endurance or end-to-end latency are established here, so a purchase decision should not rely on a single claimed number. Compare the hardware you already own, the comfort of the controls, the number of devices you want to support and whether native games justify a larger handheld.
Bottom line
For handheld PS5 Remote Play alone, use a compatible phone with the Backbone One-PlayStation Edition. Choose a phone or tablet with DualSense when flexibility and full-size controls outweigh the convenience of an integrated unit. Treat Logitech G Cloud and other Android streaming handhelds as general cloud devices until their exact PS Remote Play support is verified. Pick Steam Deck or ROG Ally for PC gaming first, with PS5 streaming considered a device-specific workaround rather than a guaranteed Sony feature.
