Koia Protein Pop is the closest ready-to-drink match for a vegan, dairy-free protein soda. If you are happy to mix a powder, Rocka Clear Protein and Applied Nutrition Clear Vegan Protein provide plant-based, clear drinks with very little or no added sugar. Dairy-free does not automatically mean vegan: beef-based isolates avoid milk but still come from animals, while clear whey products contain milk protein.
The right choice depends on three separate checks: protein source, sugar per serving and whether you want a carbonated can or a powder mixed with water. Use the comparison below, then verify the current flavor label and allergen statement in your region before buying.

What counts as a protein soda alternative?
“Protein soda” is used for more than one format. A ready-to-drink can is carbonated and portable, while most plant-based products marketed as clear protein are powders that become a fruit-style drink after mixing with water. Both can replace a creamy shake, but they do not provide the same texture or convenience.
“Clear” describes appearance and mouthfeel, not the ingredient source. A clear whey drink can contain milk, and a beef collagen-style or hydrolyzed beef isolate can be dairy-free without being vegetarian or vegan. Always identify the protein itself before relying on front-of-pack terms such as clear, sparkling or dairy-free.

Best ready-to-drink vegan choice: Koia Protein Pop
Koia Protein Pop is the most direct answer when you want a can that is both carbonated and vegan. Its clear pea protein keeps the drink away from milk-derived whey, and the product is identified as vegan and dairy-free. Healthline’s 2026 listing reports 10 g of protein, 2 g of sugar and 70 calories in a 12-fl-oz can.
Why it fits a dairy-free, low-sugar brief
- It arrives ready to drink, so there is no shaker, blender or settling time.
- Pea protein avoids the milk ingredient that disqualifies clear whey products for vegans.
- The listed sugar amount is modest for a full can, making it easier to fit into a low-sugar plan than a conventional sweetened soda.
What to check before ordering
Flavor names, allergen declarations and regional formulas can change. Read the current can or retailer listing, especially if you avoid other legumes or specific sweeteners. Carbonation also makes this a different experience from a still shake: drink it chilled and open it slowly if it has been transported or shaken.

Hydrolyzed pea protein is processed into smaller protein chains, which helps a plant formula dissolve into a clearer, lighter drink than a thick smoothie powder. It is still a pea-based product, so people with pea or legume allergies should treat the ingredient list as decisive rather than relying on the word “vegan.”
Applied Nutrition Clear Vegan Protein
Applied Nutrition positions Clear Vegan Protein as a non-creamy alternative to an ordinary shake. Its product information lists more than 11 g of protein, 1.4 g of carbohydrate, less than 0.3 g of sugar and 49 calories per 15 g serving. The protein is identified as hydrolyzed pea isolate, making it suitable for a vegan diet when the current label confirms the same formula.
This is the strongest choice in the table when your priority is minimizing sugar in a measured serving. Use the serving size on the tub or pouch when tracking intake; adding juice, syrups or sweetened plant milk changes the nutrition beyond the published powder figures.

Dairy-free options that are not vegan
Applied Nutrition Clear Protein Isolate
Applied Nutrition says its Clear Protein Isolate is a dairy-free source made from 100% hydrolyzed beef. The published serving provides more than 27 g of protein, 111 calories and zero sugar. It can work for someone avoiding lactose or milk ingredients who still eats animal products, but beef origin makes it unsuitable for vegans, vegetarians and people avoiding bovine ingredients.

“Dairy-free” here refers to the absence of milk protein, not to an animal-free formula. Check whether your personal diet also excludes beef-derived ingredients before choosing it.
PVL ISO CLEAAR
PVL lists 20 g of protein, 0 sugar and 80 calories for a serving of ISO CLEAAR. The comparison information identifies beef and plant sources, so it is not vegan even though it can fit a dairy-free plan. The mixed source makes the complete ingredient panel particularly important if you avoid either animal proteins or particular plant allergens.
Clear whey and other non-vegan soda-style drinks
Barebells Protein Soda
Barebells describes its product as a sugar-free sparkling soda using clear whey isolate. Whey is derived from milk, so the drink is not vegan and should not be treated as dairy-free simply because it is transparent and carbonated. It may suit a person who consumes dairy and wants a can rather than a shake, but it is the wrong category for a strict vegan or milk-free diet.
This distinction is a useful label-reading rule: “whey,” “milk protein,” “milk isolate” and similar terms indicate a dairy source even when the beverage looks like flavored water.

Still vegan drinks when carbonation is optional
Alpro Soya No Sugars
Alpro Soya No Sugars is a vegan, dairy-free soy beverage with a sugar-free claim. It is not a soda and does not provide the same clear, sparkling profile, but it can replace a creamy dairy shake or serve as a base for a blended drink. Soy also changes the allergen question: people who avoid soy need a different plant source.
Choose this type of drink when your priority is a familiar plant beverage rather than fizz. If you need a high-protein product, compare the protein line on the current carton; the sugar-free claim alone does not tell you how much protein it contains.
How to choose by dietary requirement
If you are vegan
- Look for pea, soy or another explicitly plant-based protein source.
- Reject whey, milk protein, casein and beef-derived isolates, even when the drink is clear or labeled dairy-free.
- Confirm that flavorings, colorants and processing aids do not carry an animal-derived declaration if your diet requires strict certification.
- For a can, start with the vegan carbonated option; for a powder, choose one of the hydrolyzed pea products and follow its serving instructions.
If you are dairy-free but not vegan
- Decide whether beef-derived protein is acceptable before considering a hydrolyzed beef isolate.
- Check the allergen statement for milk and cross-contact warnings, since “dairy-free” marketing can have a narrower meaning than your medical requirement.
- Compare protein and calories per serving, not just sugar. A zero-sugar product can still be more calorie-dense than a low-calorie can.
If sugar is your main concern
- Use the declared serving size as your baseline.
- Prefer products with a quantified sugar figure or an explicit zero/no-added-sugar statement.
- Do not add sweetened mixers, juice or flavored syrups without counting their sugar.
- Check carbohydrate separately when the label provides it; sugar-free does not mean carbohydrate-free.
How to prepare a clear protein powder without ruining the texture
Powdered clear proteins are more sensitive to mixing technique than creamy shakes. The following method reduces clumping and excessive foam without adding ingredients that would change the nutrition.
- Measure the powder with the supplied scoop or a scale. Use the product’s stated serving rather than a heaped scoop.
- Pour cold water into a shaker first. Starting with liquid helps powder disperse instead of sticking to the base.
- Add the powder, close the shaker and shake briefly until no dry pockets remain.
- Let the drink stand for the time recommended on the label so foam can settle. If the drink is still foamy, swirl rather than repeatedly shaking it.
- Taste it before changing the dilution. More water softens sweetness and acidity; less water intensifies them but can make the drink feel sharper.
- Keep the prepared drink chilled and follow the package’s storage guidance. Do not assume a mixed powder has the same shelf life as an unopened container.
Carbonation, digestion and practical use
Fizz changes how quickly a drink feels full. Sip a carbonated can rather than chugging it, particularly before exercise or if carbonated beverages usually cause bloating. A powder mixed with still water gives you more control over concentration and volume but requires preparation.

Protein source can also affect tolerance. Pea and soy are legumes and may not suit someone with a legume allergy. Beef isolates avoid milk but are still animal-derived. Clear whey contains milk proteins. If you have a diagnosed allergy, use the full allergen statement and advice from your clinician rather than treating “vegan,” “dairy-free” or “sugar-free” as medical guarantees.
Common label traps
- Clear does not mean plant-based: clear whey is still milk-derived.
- Dairy-free does not mean vegan: beef protein can be free of milk while remaining unsuitable for a vegan diet.
- No added sugar is not always zero sugar: the nutrition panel may still show naturally occurring or residual sugar.
- Sugar-free does not describe calories: sweeteners and protein ingredients can contribute calories even when sugar is zero.
- Per-serving comparisons can mislead: a 15 g powder serving and a 12-fl-oz can are different amounts of product.
- Flavor formulas can vary: verify the package available in your country, especially when buying through an international seller.
A simple decision framework
Start with format. If you need a chilled can with no preparation, choose the vegan carbonated option when you require plant protein. If powder is acceptable, select a hydrolyzed pea product and adjust water to your preferred intensity. If you are only avoiding dairy, beef-based clear isolates expand the choices, but they remain non-vegan. If carbonation is unimportant, a still soy beverage can meet a vegan, dairy-free and sugar-free brief, although its protein content must be checked separately.
Next, set your nutrition priority. For the lowest stated sugar among the vegan powders, the Applied Nutrition clear vegan serving has the smallest published figure in this comparison. For a ready-to-drink can, use the listed sugar per can rather than assuming every protein soda is sugar-free. Finally, read the current ingredient and allergen panels before purchase; product pages and formulas can change by flavor and market.
