Best Privacy-Focused TVs for Viewers Who Want Less Tracking (2026 Guide)

No television brand can be named the objectively “most private” from the available evidence. Privacy depends on the exact model, market, software version and the choices you make during setup. The practical winners are TVs that let you decline automatic content recognition (ACR), personalized advertising and voice features, explain what remains collected, and continue to provide useful core functions when optional data services are refused.

This guide compares the documented controls on Samsung, LG and Roku TV platforms, explains what ACR can see, and gives a setup procedure for reducing tracking. It does not rank picture quality, screen size or price because current model-by-model testing and pricing are not established here.

What “privacy-focused TV” actually means

A smart TV is not a zero-data device. Its operating system, installed applications, streaming services and account systems may process information even when you disable a particular tracking feature. A privacy-focused set is therefore one where data-driven functions are optional, their controls are easy to find, and the privacy consequences are described clearly.

The most important control is usually automatic content recognition (ACR). ACR attempts to identify what is displayed so a platform can provide recommendations, advertising measurement or “what to watch” features. It can operate on content from streaming apps, over-the-air broadcasts and, on some platforms, devices connected through HDMI. ACR is only one part of a TV’s data practices; voice recognition, personalized advertising, interactive marketing, device discovery and app telemetry can have separate settings and policies.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Questions to answer before buying

  • Can ACR or viewing-information collection be declined during setup and disabled later?
  • Are personalized advertising, voice recognition and interactive-marketing controls separate from ACR?
  • Which agreements are required for basic television use, and which are optional?
  • Will live TV, HDMI devices, streaming apps and software updates still work if optional data services are refused?
  • Does the policy explain retention, sharing and service-provider access?
  • How long is the exact model expected to receive security updates?
  • Does the model still meet your independent requirements for picture quality, accessibility, app availability, size and price?

Record the full model number and sales region. Menus and consent choices can differ between otherwise similar models and can change after a firmware update.

How ACR identifies what you watch

ACR does not necessarily mean a camera is recording your room. The implementation depends on the platform:

  • Samsung says its optional ACR creates signatures and may collect viewing history, time watched, a personalized service identifier and IP address when enabled. It says it does not record or watch the displayed content. Details are in Samsung’s ACR support page.
  • Roku describes creating an encrypted fingerprint from screen pixels and matching it against a catalog of shows, movies, games and advertisements. Content absent from that catalog will not be matched. Its explanation is in Roku’s Smart TV Experience guidance.
  • LG describes ACR as audio fingerprinting performed by the internal audio processor. It says this process does not collect screenshots or screen recordings for ACR, while noting that other device functions have their own data practices. See LG’s privacy statement.

These descriptions are platform statements, not a universal technical definition. Turning off ACR limits that function; it does not disable every form of usage logging by the TV, an app or a streaming account.

Documented privacy controls by TV platform

The following comparison uses current platform documentation rather than a ranking of particular models. Check the menus on the exact television you plan to buy.

Platform ACR method and inputs Opt-out and defaults Important qualifications
Samsung Creates signatures; Samsung says it may process viewing history, time watched, a service identifier and IP address. It says it does not record or watch displayed content. Samsung says ACR is optional, runs only after consent to the Viewing Information Services notice, and can be disabled in TV settings. Disabling recommendation personalization does not stop all usage collection described in the US SmartTV supplement. Voice recognition, interactive marketing and camera-enabled features are separate functions.
LG Describes audio fingerprinting from the internal audio processor; says ACR does not use screenshots or screen recordings. LG’s September 2026 US statement describes an opt-in approach for optional ACR, voice recognition and interest-based advertising, managed in TV settings. Sharing with LG Ad Solutions can depend on market, agreements and choices. Some sharing may meet legal definitions of sale or sharing in applicable jurisdictions.
Roku TV Creates an encrypted screen-pixel fingerprint to identify content from streaming, antenna or connected devices when a match exists in Roku’s catalog. Roku’s June 23, 2026 instructions put the control at Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience. The article says ACR is not enabled out of the box and the initial choice is NO. Information collected while ACR was enabled is retained after you turn it off, according to Roku. Account-level opt-out controls are also available on Roku’s website.

Samsung TVs: separate the viewing, advertising and voice switches

Samsung’s support documentation says, “ACR is optional and only runs if you opted in by consenting to the Viewing Information Services notice when you set up your TV.” You can change the choice later in the television’s settings. When active, Samsung says ACR may collect viewing history, time watched, a personalized service identifier and IP address, while stating that it does not record or watch the displayed content. Read the current wording at Samsung Support.

Do not treat the recommendation switch as a master privacy control. Samsung’s US SmartTV supplement describes information used for recommendations, optional video-stream information, interactive marketing, voice recognition and camera-enabled features as distinct categories. It says disabling recommendation personalization can make suggestions less relevant but may not stop all usage information collected for purposes in the main privacy policy. Review the supplement at Samsung’s SmartTV privacy page.

Samsung setup approach

  1. During first-run setup, read the Viewing Information Services notice rather than accepting every optional service automatically.
  2. Decline ACR or viewing-information consent if you do not want content recognition.
  3. Open the TV’s privacy or terms menus after setup and verify that ACR remains off.
  4. Review personalized recommendations, interest-based advertising, interactive marketing and voice-recognition choices separately.
  5. Recheck the settings after major software updates and when adding a Samsung account.

A 2025 petition filed by the Texas attorney general alleges that Samsung’s consent interface was confusing and that opt-out controls were scattered across menus. Those are allegations in a court filing, not adjudicated findings. The filing is available at the Texas attorney general’s petition.

LG TVs: opt-in language, sharing disclosures and support horizon

LG Electronics’ US statement dated September 12, 2026 says optional services include voice recognition, ACR and interest-based advertising, and that users can manage or withdraw from them in TV settings. LG says, “LG takes an opt-in approach to optional services and features.” It also says core functions—streaming apps, live TV, HDMI-connected devices and software updates—remain usable without optional data-driven services in supported markets. Read the statement at LG’s newsroom.

LG describes possible ACR-related sharing with LG Ad Solutions as dependent on the market, agreements and user choices. In some jurisdictions, certain sharing may fall under legal definitions of sale or sharing. Nearby-device discovery is described as a connectivity function rather than household profiling or advertising segmentation, and should not be conflated with ACR.

LG says eligible products can receive security updates for up to five years from the initial release of the applicable webOS platform version, subject to product support policies and requirements. “Up to five years” is not a guarantee for every model, so verify the exact model’s eligibility and release date before purchase.

LG setup approach

  1. Read each optional-service agreement presented during setup and decline ACR, voice recognition or interest-based advertising you do not need.
  2. After the home screen appears, open privacy settings and confirm each choice individually; do not assume one opt-out covers every function.
  3. Check that live TV, HDMI inputs and required applications still work in your market without the optional services.
  4. Review the privacy statement and any LG Ad Solutions disclosure for your country.
  5. Record the webOS platform version and verify the model’s security-update window.

Roku TV: ACR is off initially, but past data is retained

Roku’s support article, updated June 23, 2026, says Smart TV Experience ACR can identify programs watched through streaming, antenna and connected devices. The process creates an encrypted fingerprint from screen pixels and compares it with Roku’s catalog; an item not in the catalog will not be matched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On the television, Roku places the control at Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience. The article says ACR is not enabled out of the box and describes the initial setting as NO. It also provides an account-website opt-out route. Exact labels can vary by device and software version, so use the instructions in Roku’s current support article as a starting point.

Roku warns that information collected or used while ACR was enabled is retained after you disable it. Turning the switch off therefore stops future ACR activity under the documented control but does not retroactively erase the historical data described by the policy. Review account privacy options as well as the on-device menu.

Does using HDMI or “dumb” mode prevent tracking?

No. HDMI is not automatically a privacy-neutral path. A peer-reviewed paper presented at the 2024 ACM Internet Measurement Conference audited selected Samsung and LG televisions and observed ACR operating while the sets were used as external displays. In the tested setups, opting out stopped network traffic to ACR servers, and behavior differed between the United Kingdom and the United States. The study covered selected platforms and conditions, not every model or current firmware version; read the ACM IMC 2024 paper for its methods and limits.

If you intend to use a TV only as a monitor, disable ACR before connecting a computer, console or disc player, then verify that no viewing-information service has been re-enabled by a reset or update. Network-level blocking can reduce connections but may break updates or apps and is not a substitute for understanding the TV’s own controls.

A privacy-reducing setup checklist

Use this sequence for any smart TV, regardless of platform:

  1. Identify the device. Photograph or record the model number, operating-system version and purchase region.
  2. Separate required from optional consent. Expand every “more,” “personalization” or “improve services” panel before accepting.
  3. Turn off ACR/viewing information. Confirm the setting after setup and again after major updates.
  4. Disable personalized advertising. Look for interest-based ads, ad personalization or marketing identifiers; this is usually separate from ACR.
  5. Limit voice features. Decline voice recognition if it is unnecessary, and review microphone permissions for individual apps.
  6. Review camera and device-discovery features. Keep only the connectivity functions you actually use.
  7. Audit accounts and apps. Use unique passwords, remove unused applications and inspect each app’s privacy choices.
  8. Check retention and deletion options. Disabling a switch may stop new collection without deleting previously collected records.
  9. Test core functions. Verify live TV, HDMI, streaming apps, accessibility tools and updates after declining optional services.
  10. Repeat after changes. Recheck privacy menus after factory resets, account changes and firmware upgrades.

Using a separate streaming device

Keeping a television’s smart platform disconnected and using an external streaming device can reduce the TV manufacturer’s direct involvement in app activity, but it is not an automatic privacy solution. The external platform and every streaming application have their own identifiers, analytics and retention policies. This evidence set does not establish that any particular device is more private than the TV platforms above.

If you choose this arrangement, disable the television’s network connection where practical, turn off ACR before disconnecting it, and evaluate the external device’s privacy settings separately. HDMI content can still be subject to ACR on a TV whose recognition feature remains enabled.

How to choose among privacy controls and ordinary TV features

Privacy should be one column in a broader buying decision, not a substitute for checking whether the television suits your room and use. Create a shortlist only after documenting the following for each exact model:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision area What to verify
Tracking controls ACR opt-out, viewing-history controls, connected-input coverage and whether the initial default is off.
Other data services Separate switches for personalized ads, voice recognition, camera functions, interactive marketing and device discovery.
Functionality without consent Whether live TV, HDMI, apps, accessibility features and updates remain available in your market.
Data lifecycle What is collected, shared, retained after opt-out and available for deletion.
Support Exact software version, security-update policy and the model’s release date.
Conventional fit Screen size, panel and motion performance, viewing angle, brightness, audio, ports, app catalog and price.

No current source here supplies comparable picture measurements, inventory or prices, so a privacy comparison should not be presented as a picture-quality or value ranking.

Common mistakes and fixes

Assuming one “privacy” switch controls everything

Why it fails: ACR, personalized advertising, voice recognition and interactive marketing can be separate services.

Fix: Open each category and document its state. Treat a recommendation setting as only a recommendation setting.

Believing opt-out deletes previous history

Why it fails: Roku explicitly says data collected while ACR was enabled is retained after disabling it; other platforms may describe retention in broader privacy policies.

Using HDMI as a privacy guarantee

Why it fails: The 2024 independent audit observed ACR on external-display use in selected Samsung and LG setups.

Fix: Disable ACR before using HDMI and verify the setting after updates.

Accepting every setup prompt to reach the home screen

Why it fails: Optional services can be presented alongside required terms, making the difference easy to miss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Expand detailed notices, decline optional data services and test whether the TV remains usable.

Choosing by brand reputation alone

Why it fails: Menus, defaults and legal terms vary by model, firmware and country.

Fix: Require a screenshot or manual confirmation of the exact model’s privacy menus before buying, then recheck them at setup.

What the evidence does—and does not—prove

The documented platforms show that meaningful controls exist, but they do not establish a universal privacy champion. The independent 2024 audit is valuable evidence that ACR can operate on external-display content and that opt-out can stop ACR traffic in tested cases; it is not a certification for every television sold today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a 2025 Texas filing raises allegations about Samsung’s consent interface but does not constitute a court finding. A survey percentage mentioned secondhand in that filing has not been independently verified and should not be used as a market statistic.

The defensible conclusion is practical: select a model whose controls you can inspect, decline optional services you do not need, confirm core functions still work, and revisit the settings whenever software or account conditions change.
