Short answer: Duck.ai is the clearest consumer match when your priority is that chats are not used to train models. DuckDuckGo says chats are not recorded or stored by default and are not used for training by DuckDuckGo or its underlying providers. Claude is also privacy-oriented by default, but Anthropic lists safety-review and explicit opt-in exceptions. Consumer ChatGPT requires you to turn off training, while ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu use a separate no-training default. Gemini can be configured for more privacy, but its behavior depends on Gemini Apps Activity and includes a documented abuse-or-harm exception.
No-training is narrower than no processing. A service may still cache a request briefly, retain information for safety, investigate abuse, or handle data under a different account or plan. The comparison below separates those issues so you can choose an assistant without treating a marketing label as an absolute promise.

On the evidence available, Duck.ai is the easiest recommendation for a reader who wants a consumer assistant with a direct, provider-wide no-training statement. Claude is the next-closest fit if you understand its exceptions. ChatGPT can be suitable after an explicit opt-out, and its organizational plans have a different default. Gemini requires the most careful settings review because activity storage and model-improvement behavior are configurable.

Training is the process of using conversations or other content to improve a model. A no-training setting answers one question: whether your content is fed into that improvement process. It does not automatically answer four others:

- Is the request stored? A service may keep a conversation in an account history, a temporary cache, logs, or backups.
- Can people review it? Safety, abuse, fraud, or quality investigations may involve human or automated review even when ordinary model training is disabled.
- Is it sent to another provider? An assistant may route prompts to an underlying model provider under special privacy terms.
- Does the setting cover every feature? Voice recordings, file uploads, custom assistants, extensions, and third-party integrations can have separate behavior.
That is why the useful comparison is not simply “private” versus “not private.” Check the default training position, how to change it, how long information can remain available, and the exceptions that permit review or improvement.
Duck.ai: the clearest consumer no-training default
What DuckDuckGo promises
DuckDuckGo’s privacy wording is unusually direct: “By default, Duck.ai does not record or store any of your chats, and your conversations are not used to train chat models by DuckDuckGo or the underlying model providers.” That covers both DuckDuckGo and the companies supplying the underlying models, which is why Duck.ai is the strongest match for the exact requirement in this guide.
Duck.ai also says provider requests are anonymized. This reduces the amount of identifying information attached when a prompt is sent to an underlying model, but it is not a reason to paste secrets into a conversation. Anonymization can fail to remove identifying details that you include in the text itself.
The one-hour caching qualification
“Not stored” does not mean that every request disappears at the instant a response arrives. DuckDuckGo says prompt caching may hold chats in short-term memory for up to one hour. The purpose is to reduce token costs and improve speed. That is a limited operational cache, not a training archive, but it still matters if your threat model requires zero short-term handling.
How to use Duck.ai cautiously
- Open Duck.ai and select the model you want to use.
- Before entering sensitive material, treat the one-hour prompt-cache window as a possible exposure period.
- Remove names, account numbers, access tokens, private URLs, and exact customer details from the prompt. Replace them with neutral labels or synthetic examples.
- Use the service’s current privacy information to check whether voice input, file handling, or a newly added model has different terms.
- Close the session when finished, and do not rely on the no-training statement as a substitute for your organization’s data-classification rules.
Duck.ai is the best default choice when you want the provider to say “not used for training” without first finding and changing an account switch. Its remaining caveats are the short-lived cache and the need to check feature-specific behavior.
Claude: private by default, with explicit exceptions
How Anthropic’s consumer policy works
Anthropic’s consumer notice, dated March 16, 2026, says chats and coding sessions are used to improve Claude when you choose to allow improvement, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or when you otherwise explicitly opt in. The accurate summary is therefore “not used by default, with stated exceptions,” not “never used for training.”

The distinction is important for technical users. A normal conversation can stay outside improvement when Model Improvement is disabled, but a safety flag can create a separate path for use. Explicit permission is another path. Neither exception means Anthropic routinely trains on every consumer chat; it means the default is not an unconditional prohibition.

Incognito chats
Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. Use Incognito when a conversation should remain outside improvement and you do not want to depend solely on the account-wide switch. Incognito is still not a license to submit regulated records, credentials, or confidential client material; retention and safety handling can remain relevant.
Practical Claude settings checklist
- Open Claude’s account or privacy settings and locate the Model Improvement control.
- Leave improvement disabled unless you have a reason to contribute conversations and understand the consequences.
- For a particularly sensitive but permissible task, start an Incognito chat.
- Do not assume that an Incognito label changes safety-review obligations or the handling of abuse reports.
- Recheck the consumer notice after major product or policy changes; the March 16, 2026 notice is a dated statement, not a permanent guarantee.
Claude is a strong alternative for people who want a mainstream assistant with a privacy-oriented default and a clearly documented temporary mode. Its safety-review exception is the deciding caveat for users who need an absolute “never used for improvement” promise.
ChatGPT: opt out on consumer accounts; different defaults for organizations
Consumer ChatGPT
OpenAI’s consumer policy states: “When you use our services for individuals such as ChatGPT, Sora, or Operator, we may use your content to train our models.” For an individual ChatGPT account, the safe assumption is that ordinary content can be used for model improvement until you change the setting.
Turn off Improve the model for everyone before sharing anything that your privacy policy excludes from training. OpenAI says consumers can opt out through ChatGPT’s Data Controls or its privacy portal. Because labels and navigation can change, confirm that the switch is off in the account you are actually using; changing a setting in one account does not change another account or a separate workspace.

- Sign in to the ChatGPT account you intend to use.
- Open Settings, then Data Controls.
- Find Improve the model for everyone and switch it off.
- Check the setting again after logging out and back in, or after moving between personal and organization workspaces.
- Review current retention, temporary-chat, file-upload, and safety terms before entering sensitive content.
Disabling improvement addresses training use; it does not promise that a prompt is never logged, retained for a period, or examined for security and abuse prevention. Keep confidential data out unless your contract, organization policy, and the current service terms all permit it.

Business, Enterprise, and Edu
OpenAI’s Help Center gives ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu a separate default: prompts, responses, and files are not used to improve models unless the organization agrees otherwise. This is materially different from the consumer setting because the no-training position is the starting point for those plans rather than an individual opt-out.
That default does not eliminate administrative access, retention obligations, legal requests, security monitoring, or data sharing configured by the organization. A business user should still ask an administrator which workspace is active, how long content is retained, and whether an approved integration copies data elsewhere.
Gemini Apps: configurable privacy, not a blanket no-training promise
Why the setting matters
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says Gemini activity is saved and processed under the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice when Gemini Apps Activity is enabled. Your result therefore depends on the activity setting, the account you use, and the feature involved. Gemini should be described as configurable rather than categorically “no training.”
Recordings and the abuse-or-harm exception
Google says it does not use recordings to train the generative AI models powering its services except to address abuse or harm. The exception is narrow in wording but important in practice: a recording can still be processed for safety reasons. Do not interpret a setting that limits ordinary improvement as a promise that voice data is never accessed.
Gemini privacy review
- Open Gemini Apps settings while signed into the account you will use.
- Review Gemini Apps Activity and whether activity saving is enabled.
- Read the current Gemini Apps Privacy Notice for the account’s region and feature set.
- Check voice, image, file, and connected-app permissions separately; a setting for text activity may not cover every input type.
- Use redacted or synthetic examples when the account’s activity history is not appropriate for the material you are handling.
Gemini can be reasonable when you are willing to manage activity settings and accept the stated abuse-or-harm exception. It is a poorer fit when you need a simple provider-level statement that conversations are excluded by default.

You want the simplest consumer default
Choose Duck.ai. Its published default covers non-recording and non-storage of chats and excludes conversations from training by both DuckDuckGo and underlying providers. Account for the possible one-hour prompt cache and verify special features before use.

You want a full-featured assistant with a temporary mode
Choose Claude if you can live with the safety-review and explicit-opt-in exceptions. Keep Model Improvement disabled and use Incognito for conversations that should remain outside improvement.

You already use ChatGPT and can control the account
Disable Improve the model for everyone before entering sensitive prompts. If your employer provides Business, Enterprise, or Edu, confirm that you are in that workspace; its no-training default is different from an individual account.
You rely on Google’s ecosystem
Use Gemini only after checking Gemini Apps Activity and the relevant privacy notice. Treat voice recordings and connected features as separate decisions, and remember the abuse-or-harm exception.
You handle regulated or contract-protected information
Do not select a service solely from a public consumer setting. Obtain the required business agreement, retention terms, administrator controls, and approved-processing list. If those controls are unavailable, use a local or organization-approved system rather than pasting the material into a consumer assistant.
A safer way to prompt any AI assistant
Even the strongest no-training default cannot make an unsafe prompt safe. Apply these controls regardless of the assistant:

- Synthesize: Replace real records with invented examples that preserve the structure of the problem.
- Separate secrets: Never paste passwords, API keys, private certificates, recovery codes, or session cookies.
- Check outputs: An assistant may reproduce sensitive text in its answer, so protect the response and any exported file too.
- Control sharing: Do not send a generated transcript to another service without checking that service’s retention and training terms.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: treating “not used for training” as “not processed”
Correction: look for caching, account history, safety review, abuse handling, and provider routing. Duck.ai’s possible one-hour cache is a concrete example of processing without model training.
Mistake: assuming one plan’s setting covers another
Correction: identify the account and workspace first. ChatGPT consumer accounts and ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu have different defaults. Gemini behavior can also change with account context and activity settings.
Mistake: forgetting voice and files
Correction: review each input type independently. Gemini’s statement about recordings illustrates why a text-activity setting should not be generalized to voice data. Apply the same caution to uploads and connected applications elsewhere.

Correction: anonymize the prompt yourself. Duck.ai says provider requests are anonymized, but a detailed narrative can identify a person even after account metadata is removed.
Bottom line by assistant
- Best direct match: Duck.ai, because its default statement explicitly excludes chats from training by DuckDuckGo and underlying providers.
- Best alternative with a privacy mode: Claude, provided you understand safety-review and explicit-opt-in exceptions and use Incognito when appropriate.
- Best if you already work in OpenAI’s ecosystem: ChatGPT with consumer training disabled, or Business, Enterprise, or Edu with the organization’s no-training default.
- Best for Google-integrated workflows: Gemini only after reviewing Gemini Apps Activity, account context, feature-specific settings, and the abuse-or-harm exception.
The practical rule is simple: select the assistant whose default matches your risk tolerance, then verify the active account and settings before every sensitive workflow. “Not used for training” is valuable, but it is only one part of privacy.
