For the cleanest Modern Warfare 4 campaign session, turn off Voice Chat and Proximity Chat, disable text chat, mute or block likely spoiler sources, and hide your online presence and game notifications at the platform level. Use party-only or friends-only audio when you still need to coordinate. There is no documented automatic Modern Warfare 4 story-spoiler filter, so the reliable approach is to close the social channels that can reveal campaign details before you start.
The fastest spoiler-free setup
If you want a short lockdown procedure, make these changes before launching the campaign or any online mode that sits next to it. The first three are in the game; the remaining steps prevent your console or PC from reintroducing spoilers through presence cards, invites, messages, or pop-ups.

| Area | Recommended setting | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Voice chat | Voice Chat: Off; Proximity Chat: Off | Prevents lobby and nearby-player conversation from reaching you. |
| Game Chat Voice | Party Only or Friends Only when social audio is required | Preserves planned coordination without opening the lobby to strangers. |
| Text chat | Disabled (Off), or My Chat Channels Only for a private group | Removes written messages that can contain campaign names, endings, or hints. |
| Current session | Mute All in the pre-game lobby, then mute individual players as needed | Provides a quick last check when a setting was missed or a new player joins. |
| Persistent contacts | Block a repeat spoiler source | Stops communication and invites until you unblock that account. |
| Platform presence | Hide or restrict online status, current game, gaming history, and invites | Stops friends, followers, and strangers from seeing that you are playing. |
| Notifications | Turn off or reduce social, message, invite, and game pop-ups | Prevents notification previews from displaying spoiler text over the campaign. |
Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, and Nintendo Switch 2. The exact labels can change in a launch update, so treat the paths below as the documented layout and recheck the relevant menu if your build uses slightly different wording.
Lock down communication inside Modern Warfare 4
Turn off voice and proximity chat
- Open Modern Warfare 4 and select Settings.
- Open Audio, then choose Voice Chat.
- Set Voice Chat to Off.
- Set Proximity Chat to Off.
Voice Chat controls the game’s player communication channel, while Proximity Chat can expose conversation from nearby players. Turning off both is the safest choice for a solo story session because it does not depend on who enters a lobby or moves near your character.

Keep only the social audio you actually need
You do not have to choose a complete social blackout. In the same voice-chat area, use Game Chat Voice to narrow the audience. The documented choices are All Lobby, Party Only, Friends Only, and Friends & Chat Channels. For campaign preparation, Party Only is the tightest option for a coordinated group; Friends Only is useful when several friends may need to speak; and Friends & Chat Channels includes people in the selected chat channels.
All Lobby is the broadest setting. Activision notes that Game Voice Chat must be set to All Lobby for the broader lobby options to work, so do not select it accidentally while trying to restrict communication. If a party member still cannot hear you after choosing a narrower audience, verify that the party or friend is in the audience you selected rather than widening the setting for every lobby player.
Disable text chat or limit it to a private channel
- Open Settings.
- Choose Account & Network.
- Find the text-chat setting.
- Select Disabled (Off) for a fully quiet campaign session, or My Chat Channels Only if you need a private group.
The available choices are Enabled, My Chat Channels Only, and Disabled. Enabled leaves the widest surface for lobby messages. My Chat Channels Only is a compromise for a known group, while Disabled removes in-game text chat from the session. If your goal is zero exposure, choose Disabled rather than relying on other players not to type a spoiler.
Mute for the session and block persistent spoiler sources
Use a pre-game mute as a final check
Settings changes are preventative, but a lobby can still contain an unexpected speaker or text source. In the pre-game lobby, highlight the player and select Mute. To silence the lobby quickly, open Voice and select Mute All.
During a match, open the scoreboard, highlight a player, and choose Toggle Mute. The scoreboard control is View on Xbox, the Touchpad on PlayStation, and TAB on PC. These mutes are temporary: they reset when a new play session begins. A mute is therefore a useful emergency control, not a substitute for setting Voice Chat and Proximity Chat to Off before launching the campaign.

Block an account that keeps contacting you
Use blocking when a particular player repeatedly sends messages, joins through invites, or deliberately spoils story content.
- Open the player list, the player’s profile, the Social menu, or the blocked-player list under Account & Network.
- Select Block Player.
- Confirm the action.
Activision says blocking restricts all communication options and invites. When applicable, it also removes the person from the Activision Friends List. It does not remove that person from the friends list maintained by your console or PC platform, so use the platform’s own remove, unfollow, or block controls as well if you do not want that account appearing in system social surfaces.
Unlike a session mute, a block remains in place until you unblock the player. Review the blocked-player list if a friend says they can no longer invite or message you after a campaign session.
Hide your activity and suppress notifications on each platform
In-game controls do not control every channel that can spoil a campaign. A friend can see your current game through a console profile, a follower can send an invite, or a message preview can reveal a character or mission name while you are playing. Apply the platform settings below in addition to the in-game lockdown.
PlayStation 5
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Choose Users and Accounts, then Privacy.
- Select a privacy preset, or choose View and Customize Your Privacy Settings for individual controls.
- Restrict who can see your Online Status, Current Game, and Gaming History.
- Restrict who can interact with you through parties, games, and messages.
- If you do not want unsolicited contacts, disable or restrict cross-play game invitations where that option is available.
Use the custom controls when you want to remain visible to a small group but not to everyone. A preset is faster when you want a broad temporary lockdown. PlayStation states that account privacy changes apply across devices, so a setting changed on the account is not limited to one PS5.

These privacy controls govern visibility and contact. They do not replace the in-game Voice Chat, Proximity Chat, and text-chat settings, which still need to be changed inside Modern Warfare 4.

- Open Settings.
- Go to Account, then Privacy & online safety.
- Open Xbox privacy, then View details & customize.
- Choose Friends, followers & clubs.
- Limit who can send requests or follow you while you play.
- Return to Settings, open Preferences, then Notifications.
- Turn off or reduce social and game pop-ups for the campaign.
The privacy menu controls requests and follower visibility; the Notifications menu controls what appears over the game. Reducing notifications is important even when your profile is private because a permitted friend can still send a message or invite whose preview contains a spoiler.
Steam
- Open your Steam profile and select Edit Profile.
- Choose Privacy Settings.
- Set profile visibility and game activity to Friends Only or Private, depending on how hidden you want to be.
- Open Friends & Chat.
- Set your status to Invisible to appear offline while retaining messaging, or choose Do Not Disturb to suppress notifications from chat, invites, and other requests.
Invisible is useful when you still need to read or send messages but do not want your friends to see you online. Do Not Disturb is better for an uninterrupted campaign because it suppresses the incoming alerts that can appear over the game. Profile privacy and chat status are separate, so set both rather than changing only one.
Choose the right level of lockdown
There is no single best setting for every player. The correct profile depends on whether you are playing alone, coordinating with a known party, or deliberately remaining available to friends.
| Setup | Voice and text | Spoiler exposure | Coordination | Online discoverability | Manual work |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solo lockdown | Voice Chat Off, Proximity Chat Off, text Disabled, platform notifications reduced or off | Lowest available through documented controls | None during the session | Lowest when platform presence is restricted | Low after the initial setup; use Mute All if a lobby is unavoidable |
| Private-party play | Party Only voice and My Chat Channels Only text | Low, provided the party is trusted | Full coordination with the selected party or channel | Low to moderate, depending on platform privacy | Moderate; confirm party membership and mute outsiders |
| Friends-only social play | Friends Only voice and restricted text | Moderate; friends can still discuss story details | Good for a known friend group | Moderate unless you hide current game and online status | Higher; mute or block individuals when needed |
Choose solo lockdown when you are protecting an unreleased campaign, watching a launch stream, or simply want no interruptions. Choose private-party play when coordination matters more than complete isolation. Friends-only play is appropriate only when every friend who can contact you understands that campaign details are off limits.

A repeatable pre-campaign checklist
Run this checklist before each new campaign session, especially after a game update or a platform account change.
- In Settings > Audio > Voice Chat, confirm Voice Chat is Off and Proximity Chat is Off, or verify the intended Party Only or Friends Only audience.
- In Settings > Account & Network, confirm text chat is Disabled (Off) or My Chat Channels Only.
- Check the pre-game player list and use Voice > Mute All if you are entering an online lobby before the story session.
- Block any account that has previously ignored your spoiler boundary.
- On PlayStation 5, review Privacy; on Xbox, review Privacy & online safety and Notifications; on Steam, review Profile Privacy Settings and Friends & Chat.
- Start the campaign only after social pop-ups and message previews are suppressed.
Save a screenshot of your preferred platform menus if you regularly switch between a social profile and a private campaign profile. That makes it easier to restore the same configuration after a console update without widening visibility by mistake.
What to do when spoilers still appear
You hear a player despite turning off chat
Confirm that both Voice Chat and Proximity Chat are Off, then use Mute All in the current lobby. If audio continues, check whether it is coming from a platform party rather than Modern Warfare 4’s game channel; leave that party or mute it at the console or PC level. A temporary session mute resets at the next play session, so return to the Audio menu before your next launch.
You still see written messages
Return to Settings > Account & Network and verify that text chat is Disabled (Off), not merely set to Enabled. If the text is a platform message, invite, or notification preview, use the PlayStation, Xbox, or Steam notification controls as appropriate. In-game text settings cannot hide an operating-system notification.
Friends can still see that you are playing
In-game privacy and platform presence are separate. Restrict Current Game, Online Status, and Gaming History on PlayStation 5; limit follower and request permissions on Xbox; and set Steam profile game activity to Friends Only or Private. On Steam, also use Invisible or Do Not Disturb in Friends & Chat. A friend may still know you are online through a party or direct conversation, so close those channels if you need complete concealment.

An account keeps sending invites
Block the player from the in-game profile, Social menu, player list, or Account & Network blocked-player list. If invitations continue through the console or PC account, apply the platform’s own privacy and blocking controls too. Blocking inside Modern Warfare 4 restricts its communication and invites but does not remove the account from the platform friends list.
A menu label does not match
Updates can rename or move controls. Start with the closest parent menu shown here—Audio for voice, Account & Network for text and blocked players, Privacy for platform visibility, and Notifications for pop-ups—then search within that menu for the setting name. The documented behavior may also vary by platform, account type, region, or launch update.
What these settings cannot guarantee
The available documentation describes communication, presence, invite, privacy, and notification controls. It does not document a dedicated Modern Warfare 4 automatic story-spoiler filter for platform feeds or chats. These steps reduce the routes by which spoilers reach you; they cannot control a spoiler shown on a separate phone, television, browser tab, streaming service, or another account you have left signed in.
They also cannot guarantee that a trusted friend will avoid discussing the campaign. If a spoiler-free launch is critical, use Solo lockdown, hide your platform presence, and postpone social messages until you have finished the relevant story content. Re-enable Party Only, Friends Only, or normal notifications afterward when you are ready to coordinate again.
Restoring normal social settings after the campaign
When you are ready to return to multiplayer communication, reverse only the controls you need. Turn text chat back on if you want public messages, choose Friends Only or Party Only rather than All Lobby when you still want a limited audience, and restore platform visibility one category at a time. Review the blocked-player list before unblocking anyone, because a platform friend list may still contain accounts that were blocked only inside Modern Warfare 4.
Keeping platform notifications reduced while playing is optional after the campaign. If you restore them, leave message previews disabled or restricted if you want to avoid future spoilers from other games and communities.
