For most people who print regularly, the best printer with inexpensive ink is a refillable ink-tank all-in-one selected by total ownership cost—not by the biggest page-yield number. Tank printers use bottles instead of disposable cartridges, so they can reduce the frequency and cost of refills. The right model still depends on your monthly pages, color and photo needs, and whether you need an automatic document feeder (ADF), automatic duplex printing, faxing or only basic print, copy and scan functions.
Use the Canon PIXMA G3270 as a straightforward tank all-in-one to price-check, and compare the Brother MFC-T780DW when an ADF and automatic duplexing are essential. Epson EcoTank and HP Smart Tank are broad families, not single specifications: verify the exact regional model, compatible bottle number and current prices before buying.

Quick picks by buyer and workflow
| Best fit | Model or family to investigate | Why it belongs on the shortlist | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple wireless home all-in-one | Canon PIXMA G3270 MegaTank | Prints, copies and scans over wireless networking and uses Canon GI-21 bottles. | Canon’s cited yield is a manufacturer estimate; the brochure specifies simplex printing, so do not assume automatic duplex. |
| Home-office document workflow | Brother MFC-T780DW INKvestment Tank | Refillable color tank, wireless connectivity, ADF and automatic duplex printing; Brother lists a three-year limited warranty on its U.S. page. | The published page counts are for starter bottles included in the box, not an equivalent replacement-bottle set. |
| Model variety across home and office | Epson EcoTank family | Cartridge-free refillable systems with models aimed at different workloads and feature sets. | Choose a specific model; one EcoTank’s yield, speed or features cannot be transferred to another. |
| Tank printer in Canada or another HP-served market | HP Smart Tank family | Refillable-tank options with model-specific included-yield information. | The cited family information is from HP Canada, so match the exact regional SKU and bottle set. |
These are starting points, not a universal ranking. A low-cost printer that lacks duplexing or an ADF can cost more in time and paper handling than a slightly dearer model that matches your workflow.

A cartridge printer replaces a small cartridge whenever one color runs out. A tank printer stores more ink in built-in reservoirs and replenishes them from bottles. Because a bottle generally contains more ink than a cartridge, regular users can go longer between purchases and may spend less on consumables over the printer’s life.
#1 Best Overall
- INNOVATIVE CARTRIDGE-FREE PRINTING — High-capacity ink tanks mean no more dealing with lots of tiny ink cartridges; Epson’s exclusive EcoFit ink bottles make filling easy to keep you using this home office printer for longer
- CLEAR AND VIBRANT PRINT QUALITY ― Create memorable prints and projects; Unique Micro Piezo Heat-Free Technology allows wireless color printer to produce sharp text and impressive color photos and graphics on virtually any paper type
- ZERO CARTRIDGE WASTE — By using an Epson EcoTank printer you can help reduce the amount of cartridge waste ending up in landfills
- BUILT IN SCANNER AND COPIER ― All-In-One Epson EcoTank is more than a printer; High-resolution flatbed scanner and color display come together for easy document copying and navigation; Boost productivity with this printer, copier, scanner, and fax
- LESS FREQUENT INK REPLACEMENT — Replacement ink bottles don't have to be changed nearly as often as ink cartridges¹; Printer, scanner and copier lets you print up to 4,500 pages black/7,500 color² extra
Epson describes its EcoTank line as cartridge-free and bases its savings comparisons on replacement-bottle cost and the number of pages those bottles are rated to produce. Canon and Brother also document refillable tank systems. Those manufacturer comparisons explain the category’s appeal, but they are not a guarantee that every tank model is cheapest for every household.
- Best case for a tank: you print documents or color pages every month and will use the included ink before it sits idle for long periods.
- Less compelling case: you print only a few pages a year, need a very small footprint, or would pay substantially more upfront than your expected refill savings.
- Photo-heavy use: compare the exact ink formulation, paper support and photo features; a large document yield does not establish photo quality or photo cost.
Calculate ownership cost instead of chasing a yield headline
Use a time horizon that reflects how long you expect to keep the printer—often three to five years—and add the costs that will actually occur:
- Record the current purchase price of the exact regional model.
- Estimate monthly black-only, mixed-color and photo pages. Separate pages that use substantial color from pages that are mostly text.
- Identify the exact replacement bottle numbers and their current prices. Do not substitute a similarly named bottle from another model or brand.
- Estimate how many bottle sets your page volume requires over the chosen period. Use the manufacturer’s yield as an estimate, not a promise.
- Add the purchase price and expected refills. If a printer includes starter ink, state whether your calculation treats that ink as included in the purchase or as a separately priced equivalent.
- Check workflow costs: duplex printing can reduce paper use, an ADF can reduce handling time, and a printer without those features may require manual workarounds.
A simple model is: total ownership cost = printer price + (expected replacement sets × current replacement-set price). For a meaningful comparison, calculate a low-volume and a normal-volume scenario. At very low volume, the upfront price dominates; at sustained volume, refill costs matter more.

Page-yield numbers are not directly interchangeable. Canon’s figures below are for a full replacement bottle set in a stated print mode. Brother’s figures describe starter bottles in the box. Epson’s savings and cost-per-ISO-page comparison uses replacement-bottle cost versus enough standard-capacity cartridges to reach the bottle yields, using MSRP and cartridge yields as of May 2026. HP states that actual yield varies with what is printed and other factors. Treat each figure as an estimate produced under that manufacturer’s method.
Canon PIXMA G3270: a simple tank all-in-one
The Canon PIXMA G3270 brochure describes a wireless MegaTank all-in-one for printing, copying and scanning. Its ink system uses GI-21 pigment black and dye color bottles.
Canon’s documented yield
Canon states up to 6,000 black-and-white pages and 7,700 color pages per full replacement bottle set in default mode. The same brochure lists Economy Mode estimates of up to 7,600 black-and-white pages and 8,100 color pages. These are Canon estimates, not independent tests; keep the mode with the number when you use it in a calculation.
The 6,000/7,700 figures describe a complete replacement set, so they should not be compared as though they represented the same quantity of ink as Brother’s included starter bottles. Actual output changes with coverage, cleaning cycles, paper, settings and the mix of black and color pages.
Features and limits to verify
- Wireless print, copy and scan functions suit a typical home setup.
- The cited brochure specifies simplex printing. If you need automatic two-sided output, choose a model whose specifications explicitly list automatic duplex printing.
- Before ordering bottles, verify that your printer is the exact G3270 variant and that the bottle label says GI-21.
Canon’s GI-21 compatibility information, dated May 29, 2026, lists the G3270 among compatible models. Compatibility is model-specific; do not infer that another PIXMA or MAXIFY printer accepts GI-21.
Brother MFC-T780DW: the feature-rich home-office comparison
The Brother MFC-T780DW product page documents a refillable color all-in-one with wireless connectivity, an ADF and automatic duplex printing. Those features make it a stronger fit than a basic tank printer when you scan multi-page documents or routinely print on both sides.

What the included ink figures mean
Brother lists approximately 14,625 black pages combined for the two included starter black bottles and approximately 4,400 pages for the included starter cyan, magenta and yellow bottles. These are in-box starter-ink figures. They are not necessarily equivalent to one replacement-bottle set and should not be placed in a table beside Canon’s replacement-set yield without that qualification.
Why the workflow features matter
- ADF: lets you feed a stack of originals for scanning or copying instead of placing each sheet on the glass.
- Automatic duplex: prints both sides without manually reinserting pages, useful for reports and schoolwork.
- Wireless connectivity: supports a shared home-office installation; confirm that your computers and mobile devices use the supported setup method.
- Warranty: Brother lists a three-year limited warranty on the U.S. product page. Coverage terms and regional availability can differ, so read the local warranty statement.
Check the exact replacement bottle family for your regional MFC-T780DW before buying. Brother’s product page identifies the printer and its bottle ecosystem, but a bottle intended for another tank model is not automatically compatible.

Epson EcoTank: choose the exact model, not the family name
Epson’s EcoTank range covers multiple home and office printers. The 2026 Epson announcement describes the line as cartridge-free and explains that its savings and cost-per-ISO-page figures compare replacement-bottle cost with the cost of enough standard-capacity cartridges to achieve the bottle yields. Epson says the comparison uses MSRP and cartridge yields as of May 2026.
That is a stated comparison basis, not a universal measured savings result. Before selecting an EcoTank, write down the exact model’s:
- Included and replacement bottle numbers;
- Black and color yield estimates, including the test mode;
- Automatic duplex, ADF, fax and paper-capacity features;
- Wireless and mobile-print requirements;
- Warranty and local service terms.
Do not transfer a yield or feature from one EcoTank model to another simply because both use the EcoTank name. Compare the replacement-bottle price in your country and the amount of printing you actually do.
HP Smart Tank: verify the regional SKU and yield basis
HP’s Smart Tank family page describes refillable-tank printers and publishes model-dependent included-yield information. The cited page is HP Canada, so Canadian model names, included bottles and prices should not be assumed to match products sold elsewhere.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →HP explicitly notes that actual yield varies according to what is printed and other factors. When comparing a Smart Tank with another printer, record the exact model, bottle numbers, stated yield conditions and whether the page count refers to starter ink or a replacement set. A family-level page is not enough evidence for a precise cost-per-page calculation.

“Not stated” means the cited material does not establish that item; it does not mean the printer lacks the feature. Confirm the specification sheet for the exact SKU before purchase.
Match the printer to how you print
Mostly black text, occasional color
Prioritize black-bottle capacity, text speed, automatic duplexing and paper handling. A model with an ADF and duplexing can reduce paper and labor costs even if its bottle yield is not the highest headline number.

Mixed documents for a home office
Start with models that combine refillable tanks, wireless networking, an ADF and automatic duplexing. The MFC-T780DW is the documented candidate in this group; compare its current local price and replacement bottles with similarly equipped models rather than with basic print-only tanks.
School projects, graphics and occasional photos
Confirm color-bottle pricing, supported paper sizes and the manufacturer’s photo workflow. Do not use a black-and-white yield to estimate color or photo costs. The G3270’s cited color figure is a manufacturer estimate for its full GI-21 set, not a photo-lab measurement.
Very light or irregular printing
Calculate the ownership cost at your actual low page count. A tank can still be convenient, but the larger upfront purchase may take longer to offset. Follow the manufacturer’s storage and maintenance guidance and avoid leaving ink systems unused for extended periods.
Scanning or copying multi-page originals
An ADF is the feature to verify first. A flatbed-only printer can scan and copy, but each original must be placed and aligned individually. If two-sided originals are part of your workflow, check whether the ADF itself supports duplex scanning; automatic duplex printing alone does not establish that capability.
Ink compatibility: the check that prevents an expensive mistake
Ink bottles are not universal. A bottle can have a similar color name or tank branding and still be chemically or mechanically unsuitable. Before ordering:

Do not confuse starter ink with replacement economics
Included bottles can make the first ownership period unusually inexpensive. When comparing printers, label whether a page count comes from starter bottles in the box or from a separately sold replacement set. Brother’s MFC-T780DW figures are starter-bottle estimates; Canon’s cited G3270 figures are for a full replacement set.
Do not treat “up to” as a personal guarantee
Manufacturers calculate yields under defined conditions. Coverage, graphics, photos, print quality, cleaning cycles, paper and setup affect actual output. Use a range in your household budget and keep a reserve bottle if running out would interrupt work.
Keep the ink path clean
Follow the printer’s on-screen maintenance instructions for nozzle checks, head cleaning and alignment. Repeated cleaning uses ink, so start with a nozzle check and use the least intensive corrective step the manufacturer recommends.

Plan for long idle periods
If you print only a handful of pages each month, schedule a small color and black document periodically if the manufacturer recommends regular use. Store unopened bottles as directed, keep caps and vents clean, and never mix bottle families.
Check duplex and ADF assumptions
“All-in-one” normally means print, copy and scan, not necessarily duplex printing, an ADF or fax. Read each feature line in the exact specification sheet. The G3270 brochure’s simplex specification is a useful reminder not to infer automatic duplexing from the product category.
A practical buying checklist
- Expected pages per month, split into black, mixed color and photo work.
- Maximum upfront budget and the number of years you expect to keep the printer.
- Exact current printer price in your country.
- Exact compatible bottle numbers and current replacement prices.
- Whether you need an ADF, automatic duplex printing, faxing or duplex scanning.
- Paper sizes, input capacity and the media you actually use.
- Wireless and mobile-print compatibility with your devices.
- Warranty length, service location and regional availability.
- How the manufacturer measured each quoted yield and whether it covers starter or replacement ink.
Bottom-line recommendation
Begin with a refillable tank all-in-one if you print regularly and want to reduce recurring cartridge purchases. Choose the Canon PIXMA G3270 when its wireless print/copy/scan feature set and GI-21 bottle economics fit your work and you can live without automatic duplexing. Choose the Brother MFC-T780DW when an ADF, automatic duplex printing and a documented three-year limited warranty are worth prioritizing. For Epson EcoTank or HP Smart Tank, select a specific regional model only after checking its bottle numbers, yield method, workflow features and current total ownership cost.
The cheapest printer to run is the one whose refill cost, purchase price and features match your actual page volume. A high page-yield claim is a useful input to that calculation, not the calculation itself.

Are ink-tank printers always cheaper than cartridge printers?
No. Tanks are most likely to pay off for regular printing. At very low volume, the higher upfront price may outweigh refill savings over the period you plan to keep the printer.
Can I use another brand’s bottle if the color and bottle shape look the same?
No. Use only the bottle family explicitly listed for your exact printer model and region. Ink chemistry, vents and filling interfaces are model-specific.
What does “up to” mean in a printer yield claim?
It is an estimate under the manufacturer’s stated test conditions. Your pages may differ because of coverage, color mix, print mode, paper and cleaning cycles.
Is an all-in-one printer guaranteed to have an ADF or automatic duplex?
No. Print, copy and scan functions do not establish either feature. Check the exact specification sheet; for example, the cited G3270 brochure specifies simplex printing.
