For a premium standalone option, NETGEAR’s Nighthawk 5G M7 (MH7150) supports physical SIM and eSIM, with international eSIM plans listed for more than 140 countries. It is not a complete connectivity solution by itself: you still need a compatible data plan, and coverage, speed, and cost depend on your destinations and plan terms.
When a dedicated travel hotspot makes sense
A portable hotspot uses a cellular connection as its internet backhaul and shares it with nearby devices over Wi-Fi. The device does not include travel data automatically. You need a supported eSIM plan or a compatible physical SIM, and the plan must permit hotspot or router use.

Dedicated hardware is most useful when a group needs to share data, you want to connect laptops or other devices without cellular service, or you prefer not to use your phone as the connection point. For a solo traveler with a compatible phone, phone tethering or a travel eSIM installed in that phone may avoid buying and carrying another device. A rental can suit a short trip when you want to avoid ownership, but compare rental charges and data terms with buying a device and plan.
A premium option: NETGEAR Nighthawk 5G M7
NETGEAR lists the Nighthawk 5G M7 (MH7150) as a 5G/4G hotspot with Wi-Fi 7, eSIM and physical-SIM support, up to 32 concurrent devices, and up to 10 hours of battery life. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results; real-world battery runtime, cellular speed, and Wi-Fi performance vary with network conditions, plan, settings, and use. NETGEAR’s US product page displayed $499.99 when checked in 2026, and its November 17, 2025 launch announcement gave the same initial MSRP. Current price and availability may differ. NETGEAR’s M7 product page provides its specifications and current US listing.

NETGEAR says its M7 international eSIM plans cover 140+ countries. This is a vendor claim about plan coverage, not a promise of identical service or speeds in every destination. The plans are regional, so check the specific country list and terms for each part of your itinerary. NETGEAR’s eSIM plan-region support page explains where to check destinations. The separate M7 quick-start guidance advises users of third-party SIMs or eSIMs to confirm activation and compatibility with hotspot/router devices.
How to choose a hotspot for your itinerary
Check destination and network compatibility
Start with every country on your route, including stopovers. Confirm that the exact plan includes each destination, which networks it uses, and whether the device variant supports the cellular bands used there. An eSIM plan’s country list is not the same thing as a carrier roaming-compatibility list. NETGEAR maintains a separate roaming-country support list; do not treat it as a list of countries included in an M7 travel eSIM plan.

Calculate the whole trip cost
Compare the device purchase or rental with the data plan, taxes, top-ups, and any needed accessories. NETGEAR’s US page showed $499.99 for the M7 when checked in 2026; that is the device price displayed at that time, not the cost of a trip’s data. Data allowance, validity, throttling or fair-use rules, tethering restrictions, and top-up prices vary by plan, so verify them for your travel dates before buying.
Match sharing capacity and power to your group
Estimate how many devices will connect at once and what they will do. A manufacturer’s maximum connected-device figure does not establish how well a hotspot will perform under load. Consider whether you will need to recharge during the day and whether carrying a separate device is worthwhile. Treat battery-life figures as manufacturer estimates rather than guaranteed trip runtime.

- Phone tethering: A practical choice if your phone supports the needed cellular service and your plan permits tethering. It avoids a separate hotspot, but the phone must serve as both your personal device and the connection point.
- Travel eSIM in a phone: Can simplify connectivity when your phone supports eSIM and the plan covers the itinerary. It will not provide a connection to devices that cannot join the phone’s hotspot, and plan terms still matter.
- Pocket Wi-Fi rental: Avoids buying a hotspot for a one-off trip. Compare the rental period, data limits, pickup and return arrangements, and total charges with other options.
