Latios, Metagross, and Swampert are an excellent starting core for conventional battles, but the seven facilities reward different skills: scouting in the Dome, rental evaluation in the Factory, move-selection behavior in the Palace, route and status management in the Pike, and item conservation in the Pyramid. The best results come from adapting that core to each ruleset rather than copying one moveset everywhere.
Know the seven facilities before choosing a team
Emerald’s Battle Frontier contains seven facilities, and each changes what “best team” means. The Battle Tower is a conventional singles streak. The Dome lets you preview information and select three Pokémon for a single-elimination tournament. The Factory gives you rentals instead of allowing a trained party. The Arena judges three-turn, no-switching duels. The Pike is a branching gauntlet of rooms and events. The Palace chooses moves according to each Pokémon’s nature and behavior. The Pyramid combines battles with exploration, darkness, wild encounters, and limited supplies.

|---|---|---|---|
| Battle Tower | Consecutive singles | 70 battles | Consistent damage, speed control, defensive insurance, and status avoidance |
| Battle Dome | Single-elimination tournament with roster information | 10 tournaments | Preview-based selection, matchup coverage, and immediate pressure |
| Battle Factory | Rental draft and post-win swapping | 42 battles | Recognizing fixed sets, scouting, and choosing useful exchanges |
| Battle Arena | Three-turn judged duels with no switching | 56 battles | Lead order, quick knockouts, and damage in a short judging window |
| Battle Pike | Branching 14-room gauntlet | 140 rooms | Route choices, HP preservation, status cures, and event management |
| Battle Palace | Singles in which nature influences move selection | 42 battles | Matching move categories to nature and giving the AI useful choices |
| Battle Pyramid | Exploration floors with battles, wild Pokémon, and limited resources | 70 floors | Navigation, item management, utility, and avoiding unnecessary risk |
These milestones and the total of 14 Silver and Gold Frontier Symbols are listed by PokéMaps in its 2026 Battle Frontier reference. A Gold run is therefore a long consistency test, not merely a favorable opening against a few opponents.

For facilities that allow an owned team, Latios, Metagross, and Swampert cover a wide range of offensive and defensive situations. They should be treated as a starting framework, not a mandatory three-Pokémon answer. Nature, individual values, effort values, item choice, and speed targets must be selected together; there is no universally optimal spread for every Frontier opponent.

Latios: fast special pressure
Latios gives the core immediate special damage and useful speed. A practical four-move foundation is Psychic, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam or Calm Mind, and Substitute. Psychic is the dependable same-type attack; Thunderbolt and Ice Beam expand coverage; Calm Mind offers a setup route when the opposing Pokémon cannot punish it; Substitute protects against some status and creates safer turns.
Use Lum Berry when preventing one crippling status condition is more valuable than long-term recovery. Leftovers is preferable when the streak plan involves repeated turns behind Substitute or when passive healing improves survival. Avoid exposing Latios to avoidable super-effective attacks or status simply because it is the fastest member.
Metagross: physical damage and an emergency finisher
Metagross supplies powerful physical attacks and a way to end a dangerous position immediately. Meteor Mash and Earthquake are the core pair. Rock Slide or Aerial Ace can fill a coverage slot, while Explosion is an emergency option when trading Metagross for a decisive knockout is better than preserving it.

Choice Band raises immediate damage but locks Metagross into one move; Leftovers gives more flexibility over a long streak. Rock Slide is useful against targets vulnerable to Rock or that resist the rest of the core’s common attacks. Aerial Ace is a more specific answer to evasive or Bug-type targets. Explosion should be planned as a deliberate endgame line, not clicked automatically whenever Metagross is weakened.
Swampert: the stabilizing mixed attacker
Swampert’s Earthquake, Surf, and Ice Beam combination hits many Fire-, Rock-, Steel-, Ground-, and Dragon-adjacent threats without relying on one damage type. Protect can scout an opponent’s choice and provide a Leftovers turn; Substitute can create a safer attack or shield Swampert from some status effects.
Keep Swampert available for Fire-, Rock-, and Steel-type threats instead of spending it early on a neutral exchange. Its bulk is most valuable when Latios or Metagross would otherwise be forced into a bad matchup. As with the other two, choose the nature, speed target, and effort-value plan before deciding whether Protect or Substitute is the better fourth move.
Best Battle Tower team and moveset
The Tower is the clearest place to use the Latios–Metagross–Swampert core. Because the objective is a long consecutive singles streak, reliability matters more than a spectacular setup sweep. You need a lead that can win quickly while leaving a stable endgame if the first matchup is awkward.

| Pokémon | Item options | Moves | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Latios | Lum Berry or Leftovers | Psychic; Thunderbolt; Ice Beam or Calm Mind; Substitute | Fast special attacker and status-aware lead |

| Swampert | Leftovers | Earthquake; Surf; Ice Beam; Protect or Substitute | Bulky answer to Fire, Rock, and Steel threats |
How to pilot the trio
- Choose the lead for the target matchup. Latios is a natural speed lead, but do not force it into an obvious super-effective attack or status user. A different lead order can be safer when the opponent’s likely opener threatens Latios.
- Preserve the correct answer. Keep Swampert healthy if the opposing roster contains Fire-, Rock-, or Steel-type pressure. Keep Metagross available when a physical hit or Explosion may be needed to stop a late threat.
- Use Substitute and Protect for information. A scouting turn can reveal a move choice, status attempt, or damage range before you commit your endgame piece.
- Spend setup turns only when the opponent cannot punish them. Calm Mind is powerful, but a long streak punishes optimistic setup against unknown coverage or critical-hit risk.
The Tower has the largest consecutive-battle requirement among the ordinary facilities listed here. Build for repeatable lines, not for a single high-roll sweep, and avoid unnecessary status exposure throughout every set.

Best Battle Dome team and moveset
The Dome is a single-elimination tournament. Before selecting your three, you can inspect the opposing roster and relevant information. That preview changes team building: the best trio is the one that answers the visible field, not the one with the highest theoretical power in a vacuum.
Default selection
Start with Latios, Metagross, and Swampert when the preview contains a balanced mix of threats. Latios pressures slower special targets, Metagross handles many physical exchanges, and Swampert covers Fire-, Rock-, and Steel-oriented matchups. Select an order that gives your first Pokémon a favorable opening while leaving the other two able to answer the likely counters.
When to use Breloom
Breloom can replace one member when its speed and matchup are favorable. A disruption set of Spore, Substitute, Focus Punch, and Leech Seed creates immediate pressure and can punish a preview lacking a reliable sleep answer. It is situational rather than a universal upgrade: poor speed matchups, resistant targets, or an opponent that can break Substitute safely can turn Breloom into a liability.
Fast, immediately threatening attacks are usually preferable to elaborate setup because a tournament loss cannot be repaired by switching during the match. Use the preview to identify which member is expendable, then order the three so the second and third Pokémon cover the first one’s most obvious counters.
Best Battle Factory rentals and swap strategy
The Factory does not allow you to import a bred or trained team. You choose three rentals from six options, and each rental comes from a fixed set with a known species, moves, held item, nature, and effort-value spread. After a win, you may exchange one of your Pokémon for a defeated opponent’s rental.
What to value in the opening six
- Reliable same-type attacks: consistent accuracy and power are preferable to a narrow gimmick.
- Broad coverage: a rental that can hit several common types is more useful than one that wins only a single matchup.
- Useful speed: moving first often prevents damage and status, especially when your rental has limited durability.
- Complementary defensive types: avoid drafting three rentals that share the same obvious weakness.
- Set quality: judge the complete package of moves, item, nature, and effort values rather than species reputation alone.
When to swap
Record every rental set you see, including the ones you reject. Swap only when the incoming Pokémon improves coverage, patches a major weakness, or has a materially stronger fixed set. A famous species with a poor rental set can be worse than an unglamorous Pokémon with accurate attacks and a useful item.
The scientist’s style phrase is generated from the number of moves in each move category. Treat it as a mechanical clue about the available set, not as flavor text or a guarantee that a rental is good. Factory success comes from scouting and memory: identify what the opponent used, remember which options were declined, and make exchanges that improve the next several matchups rather than chasing one immediate advantage.

Best Battle Arena team and moveset
Arena battles are judged over three turns and do not allow switching. Conventional stall plans lose much of their value because there may be no time to recover from a slow opening. Lead order and immediate damage output are more important than preserving a perfect six-Pokémon balance.

Practical lineup
Swampert with Earthquake, Surf, Ice Beam, and Substitute is a useful Arena example. It can threaten multiple types while using Substitute when the expected exchange gives it a safe turn. Pair it with high-pressure Latios and Metagross sets chosen for immediate attacks rather than long setup sequences.
Order the team around counters
- Place a lead that can damage or disable the most likely opener without needing a switch.
- Choose the second Pokémon to answer the counters that can defeat the lead, not merely to repeat the lead’s role.
- Reserve the third slot for the matchup most likely to survive the first two turns or win the final judgment.
Defensive moves still have a place when they directly improve the three-turn result, but stalling for its own sake is difficult. Calculate whether Substitute, Protect, or a setup move actually changes the judged outcome before giving up an attack slot.
Best Battle Pike team and route decisions
The Pike is a 14-room branching gauntlet. Rooms can contain battles, wild encounters, status events, recovery opportunities, and other effects. A balanced Latios, Metagross, and Swampert core is serviceable, but the route and your current condition matter as much as the movesets.
Make survival part of the build
- Preserve HP on the Pokémon that answers the next likely battle type.
- Use status cures as strategic resources instead of waiting until a condition has already ruined a key matchup.
- Take a safer branch when the attendant’s hint identifies one; a slightly less rewarding room is often better than an avoidable status or double battle.
- Do not spend a core member on a neutral trade when the route still contains several rooms.
The Pike punishes a team that looks excellent on paper but reaches the next branch poisoned, paralyzed, or too low on health to answer its assigned threat. Treat route selection, recovery timing, and status management as part of team construction.
Best Battle Palace team and moveset
In the Palace, you do not choose every move directly. A Pokémon’s nature and behavior influence whether it selects an attack, defensive move, or support move. A standard Tower set can therefore become unreliable if its move categories do not match the nature you are using.
Build for the nature’s preferred behavior
- Identify whether the chosen nature favors attack, defense, or support behavior.
- Give the Pokémon several useful moves in that category so the AI has more than one good option.
- Keep at least one move from another category when it creates a necessary answer, but do not fill the set with choices the nature repeatedly avoids.
- Test the interaction of nature and move categories before committing to a long streak.
For example, a powerful attack is not automatically valuable if the Palace AI rarely selects attacks for that nature. Conversely, a support move can be harmful when the nature repeatedly chooses it in situations where immediate damage was required. Palace teams should be treated as facility-specific builds, even when they use the same species as the Tower core.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Best Battle Pyramid team and utility moves
The Pyramid combines battles with exploration. Floors may contain wild Pokémon, dark areas, trainers, and limited supplies, while the Battle Bag changes how you manage items. Conventional competitive efficiency is only one part of the problem; a move or ability that helps you find or preserve resources can be more valuable than a small increase in damage.
Early utility with Linoone
Linoone with Pickup and Covet can help obtain items early. Its value is logistical: it may improve the supplies available for later floors rather than simply winning a head-to-head battle. Do not assume the standard bag is available; plan around the items you have actually found.
Later-floor combat priorities
As the floors become more dangerous, strong physical coverage such as Brick Break, Rock Slide, and Earthquake becomes increasingly useful. Preserve healing and status resources for situations that block progress, and avoid unnecessary trainer fights when the route does not justify the risk.
A Pyramid party should be able to win the next required battle while still having enough health and supplies to explore. Navigation, darkness, item drops, and the special Battle Bag make this a survival exercise rather than a normal streak with a different backdrop.
Can one team beat every facility?
One owned core can enter several facilities, but no single moveset is optimal across all seven. Latios, Metagross, and Swampert are a strong conventional starting point for the Tower, Dome, and parts of the Pike and Arena. The Factory replaces ownership with rental evaluation. The Palace requires nature-aware move categories. The Pyramid rewards utility and resource management. Breloom is a situational Dome substitute, while Linoone fills a Pyramid utility role.

| Facility | Keep from the core | Change first |
|---|---|---|
| Tower | All three members | Fine-tune speed, item, and fourth-move choices for consistency |
| Dome | Choose the best preview-based subset | Consider Breloom when Spore and Focus Punch have favorable matchups |
| Factory | No imported team | Evaluate six rentals, record sets, and swap selectively |
| Arena | High-pressure Latios, Metagross, or Swampert | Prioritize immediate three-turn damage and lead order |
| Pike | Balanced coverage | Plan status cures, HP conservation, and safer branches |
| Palace | Species can remain useful | Rebuild moves around nature and behavior categories |
| Pyramid | Strong physical coverage when available | Add utility, preserve supplies, and consider Linoone with Pickup and Covet |
Preparation checklist for long streaks
- Decide the facility’s win condition before selecting moves: quick knockouts, preview coverage, rental quality, judged damage, route survival, behavior control, or resource preservation.
- Choose nature, item, individual-value goals, effort values, and speed targets as one plan. Changing one can invalidate the others.
- Keep a written record of rental sets and rejected Factory options.
- Identify which Pokémon must be preserved for the most dangerous known threat.
- Prefer accurate, repeatable attacks over strategies that depend on evasion, one-hit knockout moves, or favorable random outcomes.
- In facilities with restricted selection or no switching, decide the order before the battle begins.
- Track status, remaining recovery, and replacement options after every Pike or Pyramid room.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The standard trio keeps losing to one coverage move.”
Stop treating the trio as fixed. Change the lead or replace one member for the specific facility, then preserve the Pokémon that answers the coverage threat. A team with broad theoretical coverage still fails if the required answer is sacrificed early.
“My Palace Pokémon keeps choosing useless moves.”
Review the nature and the category of every move. Remove attractive attacks or support options that the behavior pattern selects at the wrong time, then test a smaller pool of compatible choices before another long attempt.
“I win Factory battles but cannot make progress.”
Record the complete fixed set rather than judging by species. Swap only for a clear improvement in coverage, speed, defensive compatibility, or set quality. Remember rejected rentals; they may become valuable after the opposing roster changes.
“The Pike or Pyramid run collapses after a technically winnable battle.”
Review the route decision and resource use, not only the moveset. Avoid optional fights, take safer branches when indicated, cure disabling status promptly, and reserve healing for the Pokémon that covers the next serious threat.
“Arena losses happen before the team can stabilize.”
Reorder the three Pokémon and replace slow setup with immediate damage or a short defensive action that changes the judged result. Since switching is unavailable, the opening order is part of the team itself.
What the Gold goals require
The Frontier’s Gold objectives are substantial: 70 Tower battles, 10 Dome tournaments, 42 Palace battles, 56 Arena battles, 42 Factory battles, 140 Pike rooms, and 70 Pyramid floors. The exact total is seven Gold Symbols alongside seven Silver Symbols. Plan each attempt around the facility’s actual format and accept that a team optimized for one milestone may need a different lead, item, move, or substitute for the next.
