If you mean Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the best alternative depends on what you want to do: choose Pokémon Scarlet or Violet for a traditional open-world adventure with broad multiplayer, Pokémon Legends: Arceus for solo exploration and catching, or Pokémon Pokopia for cozy building with optional social play. “The new Pokémon game” is an assumption here: Nintendo lists Legends: Z-A as released on October 16, 2025, and The Pokémon Company says it is available now. Nintendo’s listing and the official Pokémon page provide the details.

Which Pokémon game is the best alternative?

Game Best for Solo and multiplayer at a glance Platform
Pokémon Scarlet or Violet A traditional Pokémon RPG with open-world exploration One player on one system; two to four players locally; one to four online. Multiplayer includes exploring, trading, and battling. Nintendo Switch
Pokémon Legends: Arceus Solo exploration, research, and catching One player on one system; two players in local or online play. Nintendo Switch
Pokémon Pokopia Cozy crafting, world restoration, and social play One to four players on one system; two to four locally; one to four online. Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive
Pokémon Legends: Z-A The likely game you mean, with solo play and group battles One player on one system; two to four in local wireless or online play. Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 editions are listed; check the edition before buying.

Player counts and modes are from Nintendo’s official product listings for Scarlet, Legends: Arceus, Pokopia, and Legends: Z-A. “Local” means nearby systems connecting wirelessly; it is distinct from playing together online.

Best for a traditional Pokémon adventure: Scarlet or Violet

Scarlet and Violet are the closest picks if you want a mainline-style RPG rather than a change of genre. Their open world and three story paths give you a substantial solo journey, while multiplayer supports exploration, trading, and battling. Nintendo lists one player on a single system, two to four players locally, and one to four online. Choose between the two versions based on their version-specific content, rather than expecting different player counts.

For a group, this is the most flexible option in the comparison: it supports more online players than Legends: Arceus and includes shared exploration alongside trading and battles. Online features may require a Nintendo Switch Online membership; check Nintendo’s current terms for your region.

Best for solo exploration: Legends: Arceus

Pokémon Legends: Arceus puts exploration, research, and catching at the center of its adventure. Nintendo frames the objective around completing the region’s first Pokédex, making it a strong choice if the appeal of Legends: Z-A is discovering Pokémon and progressing at your own pace.

Its multiplayer is more limited than Scarlet or Violet: Nintendo lists one player on a system and two players in local or online modes. Pick it primarily for its solo focus, not for a larger group’s shared exploration.

Best for cozy building: Pokémon Pokopia

Pokémon Pokopia changes the activity altogether: you play as Ditto and rebuild a world through cozy crafting and restoration. It has solo and multiplayer options, including one to four players on a single system, two to four locally, and one to four online. Nintendo lists its release date as March 5, 2026, and identifies it as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.

Pokémon TCG: Pokémon Day 2026 Collection

  • This also comes with 1 Pokémon coin.
  • You will also receive 3 Pokémon TCG booster packs.

That makes Pokopia the pick for players who want a more relaxed creative project, not a direct substitute for a story-led Pokémon RPG. Online play may require Nintendo Switch Online; verify the current regional requirements.

Should you play Legends: Z-A instead?

If Legends: Z-A is the game you meant, it may already fit both sides of the question: Nintendo lists one player for single-system play and two to four for local wireless and online multiplayer. Its multiplayer mode, Link Play, unlocks after approximately 1 to 1.5 hours of play, according to Nintendo Support. For online play, each participating system needs a copy of the game. Check Nintendo’s listing for the correct Switch or Switch 2 edition.

  • 50+ Pokemon Cards
  • 5 Holos Guaranteed minimium per order
  • 1 GX, EX, V, VMax, Full Art, Tag Team, or Secret Rare

Use this quick decision guide:

  • Want an open-world RPG and the broadest mix of group activities? Choose Scarlet or Violet.
  • Want a solo-first exploration and catching adventure? Choose Legends: Arceus.
  • Want cozy restoration and building, with friends as an option? Choose Pokopia if you have a Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Want group battles in the game you likely meant? Consider Legends: Z-A itself.

What to check before playing online

Local wireless and online play are different ways to connect: local play is for nearby systems, while online play connects players over the internet. Nintendo lists online modes for these games, but online features may require Nintendo Switch Online and an internet connection. Requirements and membership terms can vary by region, so confirm them with Nintendo before arranging a group session.
