Choose Pizza Boy for a dedicated handheld-style emulator with touch and layout controls, or use My OldBoy! for Game Boy/Game Boy Color and My Boy! for Game Boy Advance. Keep PokeDaisy if its Pokémon companion features, dual-screen presentation, guides, Pokédex information, rewind, or ROM-hack workflow are the reason you installed it.
Quick answer: which PokeDaisy alternative should you use?
The right replacement depends less on the Pokémon name and more on the console generation, how much setup you tolerate, and whether you want a general emulator or a Pokémon-focused environment.

| App | Best fit | Game-system coverage described in the available documentation | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| RetroArch | One configurable app for several consoles | Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance through selectable cores, plus many other systems | You install and configure cores instead of opening a single-purpose emulator |
| Pizza Boy | A dedicated Android handheld experience | The Pizza Emulators family includes native handheld emulators; verify the exact Game Boy, Color or Advance edition for your title | The correct edition matters, especially for a specific Pokémon game or ROM hack |
| My OldBoy! | Focused classic-library emulation | Game Boy and Game Boy Color | It does not replace a Game Boy Advance emulator for FireRed or Emerald |
| My Boy! | Focused Game Boy Advance emulation | Game Boy Advance | It is not the natural choice for the original Game Boy or Game Boy Color releases |
| PokeDaisy | Pokémon-specific play on compatible dual-screen Android handhelds | Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance | It is specialized rather than a broad, multi-system frontend |
For the original Pokémon Red and Yellow, and for Pokémon Crystal, use a Game Boy/Game Boy Color-capable option. Pokémon FireRed and Emerald require Game Boy Advance support. RetroArch can cover all of those generations in one installation, while My OldBoy! and My Boy! divide the job by system.
What PokeDaisy provides that a general emulator may not
PokeDaisy is described as a Game Boy, Game Boy Color and GBA player for dual-screen Android handhelds, made for Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, Yellow, Crystal and popular ROM hacks from every generation. Its purpose is therefore narrower than that of a general frontend.

Its documented feature set combines emulation with a companion layer:
- A game library for organizing supported titles.
- Save-file handling, save states, resume and rewind.
- A companion interface intended for Pokémon play.
- Guides and Pokédex-style information alongside the game.
- RetroAchievements support.
- Gamepad and keyboard input documented in the development notes.
That combination is the reason to stay with PokeDaisy. A conventional emulator can run the game, but it will not necessarily reproduce the companion interface, guides, Pokédex information, or dual-screen presentation. If those features are incidental and your priority is broader system support or a conventional emulator interface, an alternative is more practical.
RetroArch: best for flexibility and multiple systems
RetroArch is a free, open-source, cross-platform frontend. On Android, it uses selectable emulator cores rather than presenting one fixed emulator implementation. That architecture is useful when you want to play Game Boy Pokémon titles alongside games from other consoles, switch between Game Boy cores, apply shaders, or maintain controller profiles.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why RetroArch is the strongest all-round alternative
- Broad scope: one frontend can organize more than a single handheld generation.
- Core choice: you select and configure the core appropriate to Game Boy, Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance content.
- Input flexibility: Android support includes customizable on-screen overlays and USB or Bluetooth controller peripherals.
- Presentation controls: shaders, overlays and per-system or per-game settings can be adjusted.
- Migration potential: PokeDaisy specifically documents pointing to another emulator’s save folder, such as RetroArch’s, which makes side-by-side use realistic.
The cost of that flexibility is setup. You must install RetroArch, obtain the appropriate core, tell the frontend where your content is stored, and configure controls. Someone who wants to tap one Pokémon-specific library entry and start playing may find that slower than PokeDaisy or a dedicated emulator.
Basic Android setup sequence
- Install RetroArch from a source you trust. Use the current Android build available to you and note that menu labels can change between releases.
- Install a core for the system you need. Choose a Game Boy/Game Boy Color-capable core for Red, Yellow or Crystal, and a Game Boy Advance-capable core for FireRed or Emerald. If you play both generations, install one core for each rather than forcing all games through a mismatched core.
- Set a content location. Keep your legally obtained game files in a stable folder that Android storage permissions allow RetroArch to read. A predictable folder makes later save migration easier.
- Load a game through the selected core. Start the content from RetroArch’s load-content flow, then confirm that the expected core is associated with the title.
- Configure input before a long session. Map the directional controls, A, B, Start and Select. With a physical controller, check that every button is recognized; with touch controls, adjust the overlay position and opacity.
- Set save locations deliberately. RetroArch can use its own save directory. Record that location if you may return to PokeDaisy or another emulator later.
- Create a test save. Save inside the game, close the content normally, reopen it, and verify that the save appears. This catches storage-permission and directory mistakes before many hours of progress are invested.
When RetroArch is the better choice
Choose it when you want one Android application for Pokémon and unrelated systems, care about shader or overlay customization, or regularly switch controllers. It is also the most logical alternative when you already maintain a RetroArch library and want PokeDaisy to access the same save area. The frontend is less immediate than a dedicated emulator, so it is a poor fit if you do not want to learn cores, content paths and per-game settings.

Pizza Boy: a dedicated emulator path
Pizza Emulators presents Pizza Boy Double Slice as a fast Android dual-screen emulator with full touch support, save states, custom layouts and colors. The same site describes a broader family of native emulators. That makes Pizza Boy the dedicated alternative to investigate when you want an app centered on handheld play rather than a multi-system frontend.
What makes Pizza Boy appealing
- Dedicated interface: the app family is designed around handheld emulation rather than a general console catalog.
- Touch support: full touch controls are documented for Double Slice.
- Save states: useful for pausing difficult sections without replacing the game’s normal save system.
- Custom layouts and colors: you can tailor the on-screen presentation instead of accepting one fixed arrangement.
- Dual-screen orientation: Double Slice is specifically described as a dual-screen emulator, which may suit Android handhelds with two displays.
Check the edition before loading a Pokémon game
“Pizza Boy” refers to a family, not one universal compatibility promise. Before installing it for a particular title, confirm whether the edition you selected targets Game Boy, Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance. That distinction matters: a Game Boy Color edition is the relevant path for Crystal, while FireRed and Emerald need the Advance edition. The available documentation does not establish current store availability, pricing, update cadence or compatibility with every modern ROM hack, so verify those details in the current listing.
Who should choose Pizza Boy
Pizza Boy is a strong fit if you want dedicated handheld controls, a touch-first layout and save-state support without learning RetroArch cores. It is also worth considering for a dual-screen Android handheld where the Double Slice presentation matches the device. It is less attractive when your main goal is one library spanning many unrelated consoles or when a particular ROM hack has not been confirmed for the edition you plan to use.
My OldBoy! and My Boy!: focused classic emulators
The comparison identifies My OldBoy! for Game Boy/Game Boy Color and My Boy! for Game Boy Advance. They are conventional, focused emulator choices for readers who do not need PokeDaisy’s companion layer and do not want a multi-system frontend.
My OldBoy! for Red, Yellow and Crystal
Use My OldBoy! when your library is centered on original Game Boy or Game Boy Color Pokémon releases. That includes the generation represented by Red, Yellow and Crystal. It is not the appropriate single-app answer for Advance-only games such as FireRed and Emerald.

- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
My Boy! for FireRed and Emerald
Use My Boy! when your priority is the Game Boy Advance generation. It is the focused option among the alternatives for FireRed and Emerald. If you also want Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, plan on a separate compatible emulator or choose RetroArch instead.

What is not established about these two apps
The available comparison does not establish current pricing, store availability, update cadence, or compatibility with every modern ROM hack. Treat those as items to verify at the time you install. The evidence supports their system focus, not a blanket promise for every modified game or every Android device.
Choosing by Pokémon game
| Pokémon title | Required handheld generation | Suitable alternatives | Selection note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Red | Game Boy/Game Boy Color-capable emulation | RetroArch, Pizza Boy’s matching edition, My OldBoy!, PokeDaisy | Do not install a GBA-only emulator for this title |
| Pokémon Yellow | Game Boy/Game Boy Color-capable emulation | RetroArch, Pizza Boy’s matching edition, My OldBoy!, PokeDaisy | A focused GB/GBC emulator is sufficient |
| Pokémon Crystal | Game Boy/Game Boy Color-capable emulation | RetroArch, Pizza Boy’s matching edition, My OldBoy!, PokeDaisy | Confirm that the Pizza Boy edition targets GB/GBC |
| Pokémon FireRed | Game Boy Advance emulation | RetroArch, Pizza Boy’s matching Advance edition, My Boy!, PokeDaisy | Use a GBA-capable core or app |
| Pokémon Emerald | Game Boy Advance emulation | RetroArch, Pizza Boy’s matching Advance edition, My Boy!, PokeDaisy | Use a GBA-capable core or app |
How to move saves without losing progress
PokeDaisy documents using another emulator’s save folder, including RetroArch’s. That means you can test an alternative without abandoning an existing campaign, but the process should be treated as a migration rather than a casual copy-and-paste operation.
Safe migration procedure
- Close the game and emulator completely. Do not copy files while the source emulator is still writing a save.
- Make a dated backup. Copy the entire source save folder to a separate location and label it with the date and the game name. Keep the original untouched until the target emulator has been tested.
- Identify the source folder. PokeDaisy can point to another emulator’s save folder, and RetroArch has its own save directory. Use the folder that actually contains the game’s current save rather than guessing from a similarly named directory.
- Check the target’s expected format. The target emulator must recognize the same save format. A folder being visible does not guarantee that the application will read every file inside it.
- Point the target application to the folder or copy the backed-up save into its expected location. Preserve the original file name and folder structure while testing.
- Open the game and verify the in-game save. Load the file, check party and progress details, and then make a new in-game save.
- Test reopening. Exit normally, start the game again, and confirm the new save persists. Only after this test should you treat the migration as complete.
Save states are separate from normal game saves
A save state is an emulator snapshot, while an in-game save is written by Pokémon itself. Moving one does not necessarily move the other. For the most portable workflow, create a fresh in-game save before switching applications and retain the old emulator’s complete backup. Use save states as convenience checkpoints, not as the only copy of a long-term playthrough.
Using PokeDaisy and another emulator side by side
You do not have to uninstall PokeDaisy to test RetroArch, Pizza Boy or another focused emulator. Keep one application as the primary player, make a dated backup before each switch, and avoid opening the same save simultaneously in two apps. This reduces the chance that the last application to close overwrites newer progress.

Touch controls, physical controllers and dual-screen play
Every option can be judged on how it handles input, not just whether it launches a ROM.
On-screen controls
Pizza Boy Double Slice explicitly documents full touch support, custom layouts and colors. RetroArch provides customizable overlays, so you can reposition virtual buttons and adapt the layout to a phone or handheld screen. PokeDaisy’s development notes document gamepad and keyboard input, while its dual-screen design targets compatible Android handhelds rather than a standard phone-first layout.
USB and Bluetooth controllers
RetroArch’s Android feature summary documents compatibility with USB and Bluetooth controller peripherals. A Bluetooth Android game controller or USB-C gamepad is optional; it is not required to play. Pair or connect the controller before launching the game, then map every button in the emulator’s input settings and test Start and Select as well as the face buttons.
Controller troubleshooting
- Buttons work in Android but not in-game: open the emulator’s input mapping and assign the controller to the active player.
- Only some buttons respond: remove duplicate mappings and test the directional pad, face buttons, Start and Select individually.
- Touch buttons obscure the display: reduce overlay opacity or choose a custom layout with smaller controls.
- A dual-screen layout looks wrong: confirm that the app and device actually support the intended dual-screen presentation; a standard phone may not display it as a dedicated handheld does.
ROM hacks and compatibility limits
PokeDaisy is explicitly positioned for popular ROM hacks of every generation. That is a meaningful advantage if your library includes modified Pokémon games, but it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every hack behaves identically in every alternative emulator. A hack can depend on the underlying Game Boy, Game Boy Color or GBA behavior, the emulator’s save handling, or a feature specific to its original target.
For RetroArch, choose a core matching the hack’s base system and test a new in-game save before committing to a long playthrough. For Pizza Boy, verify the exact edition and test the hack independently. For My OldBoy! and My Boy!, the documented system focus is clear, but current compatibility with every modern ROM hack is not established.

Common problems and practical fixes
The game opens with the wrong controls
Re-enter the active emulator’s input settings and map the controller or touch overlay to the current player. RetroArch uses core and frontend settings, so check both if a mapping appears correct in one game but not another.
The save is missing after switching apps
Return to the backup, confirm that the target is reading the intended save folder, and verify that the app supports the source format. Do not overwrite the backup while troubleshooting. If the target still cannot read it, continue in the original emulator until you have a confirmed migration.
A Game Boy game will not load in a GBA-only choice
Switch to a Game Boy/Game Boy Color-capable option. Red, Yellow and Crystal are not GBA titles, while FireRed and Emerald require GBA support.

Install only the cores you need, create one stable content folder, configure one controller profile, and test one game before importing the rest of the library. If that setup still outweighs the flexibility you need, a dedicated Pizza Boy edition or the focused My OldBoy!/My Boy! path will be simpler.
The alternative lacks PokeDaisy’s companion features
This is a product-design difference, not a configuration error. Guides, Pokédex-style information, the companion interface and Pokémon-oriented presentation are reasons to keep PokeDaisy even if another emulator is better for a particular controller, system or multi-console library.
Final decision framework
- Choose RetroArch if you want broad system support, core choice, shaders, customizable overlays and USB or Bluetooth controller profiles in one frontend.
- Choose Pizza Boy if you want a dedicated Android handheld interface, touch support, save states and custom layouts or colors. Confirm the edition for the exact Pokémon generation.
- Choose My OldBoy! for a conventional Game Boy/Game Boy Color library centered on Red, Yellow or Crystal.
- Choose My Boy! for a conventional Game Boy Advance library centered on FireRed or Emerald.
- Stay with PokeDaisy when the Pokémon companion, guides, Pokédex information, dual-screen presentation, rewind, RetroAchievements or ROM-hack-oriented workflow matters more than broad platform coverage.
Whichever route you take, make a dated save backup first, match the emulator to the game’s handheld generation, and verify a new in-game save after migration. Those three checks prevent the most expensive mistakes: choosing the wrong emulator, losing progress, or discovering a controller problem after a long session.
