There is no single best type of pliers for every job: the right pair depends on whether you need to grip, turn, cut, clamp, or reach a small part. Use the visual cues below to identify common pliers and match their jaw shape and mechanism to the task.
What are pliers used for?
Pliers grip, hold, bend, turn, or cut objects. Their shape matters: broad adjustable jaws suit larger fittings, narrow jaws reach confined spaces, and cutting edges are made for wire or small fasteners. The images in a visual guide should show each tool clearly from a consistent angle, with its type labeled; a recognizable feature helps distinguish similar-looking tools.

Common types of pliers: pictures and identification
Use these visual cues to recognize the main types. A clear photo or diagram should make the defining joint, jaw, or cutting edge easy to see.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Slip-joint pliers
Look for: a pivot that can move between two positions and relatively compact jaws. Use: general gripping, turning, and holding. The pivot adjustment offers less jaw-opening range than a groove-joint design.
Tongue-and-groove (groove-joint) pliers
Look for: a grooved sliding joint and adjustable jaws that open across a wider range. Use: gripping larger or irregular objects, including pipes and fittings. These are also commonly called channel-lock pliers; Channellock is a brand name, not the generic tool type.
Long-nose and needle-nose pliers
Look for: long, narrow, tapered jaws. Use: reaching small parts and wire in confined spaces. Needle-nose describes a slimmer, longer form of long-nose pliers. Some models also have cutting jaws, so check the tool rather than assuming every pair cuts.

Lineman’s pliers
Look for: broad, heavy jaws with cutting edges near the pivot. Use: gripping, bending, and cutting wire. They are commonly used as an electrical trade tool, but ordinary pliers are not automatically safe for electrical work.
Diagonal cutters
Look for: short cutting edges set at an angle. Use: cutting wire. Unlike combination pliers, diagonal cutters are designed around cutting rather than gripping objects.
End-cutting pliers and nippers
Look for: cutting edges at the tips of the jaws, often on a rounded head. Use: flush cuts and, depending on the design, pulling or prying small nails and tacks.

Locking pliers
Look for: an over-center or toggle mechanism and an adjustment screw. Use: clamping an object so you do not have to keep squeezing the handles. They are often called vise grips; Vise-Grip is a brand name.

Specialty pliers
Look for: jaws or mechanisms shaped for a narrow task. Specialty versions include snap-ring, wire-stripping, spring-removal, crimping, and hose-clamp pliers. Match the tool to the specific fastener, wire, spring, or clamp; a general-purpose pair is not a substitute for a purpose-built design.
What is the difference between groove-joint pliers and slip-joint pliers?
Both adjust at the joint, but the mechanism and range differ. Slip-joint pliers shift the pivot between two positions; groove-joint pliers slide along a grooved joint and generally offer a wider range of jaw openings. That extra range makes groove-joint pliers more suitable for larger or irregular objects, while slip-joint pliers remain a compact option for general gripping and holding.

For a basic household selection, these two types cover different needs rather than competing for one universal “best” spot. Add long-nose pliers when access to small parts matters, and choose cutters or locking pliers only if your jobs call for cutting or hands-free clamping.
Which type of pliers is best for tiny pins or small parts?
Long-nose or needle-nose pliers are the more suitable choice when a part is small or set in a confined space. Their tapered jaws reach where broader jaws may not fit. For delicate work, use a smaller pair and apply only the force needed; larger pliers can provide more leverage but may damage lighter materials.

How to choose pliers for the job
- Check access: use narrow, tapered jaws for restricted spaces; broad jaws need room to approach the object.
- Match the opening: compare the object’s size with the jaw range. Groove-joint designs adjust across a wider range than slip-joint designs.
- Match jaw shape to the object: adjustable gripping jaws suit pipes and irregular shapes; do not use cutting edges as gripping surfaces.
- Decide whether you need to grip or cut: diagonal cutters and nippers are for cutting; gripping pliers are not interchangeable with them.
- Consider whether continuous pressure is practical: locking pliers clamp after adjustment, which can help when a workpiece needs to be held.
- Choose size with care: Home Depot’s guide, last updated September 7, 2023, says 8-to-12-inch pliers are useful for many jobs, smaller pairs suit delicate work, and larger pairs provide more force but can damage lighter materials. Treat this as retailer guidance, not a universal sizing standard.
Using pliers without damaging the work
When gripping polished pipe, place a cloth between the jaws and the surface to help protect the finish. For turning nuts, Home Depot recommends using a wrench when possible; plier jaws can mar the nut or slip. Choose a tool designed for the task rather than forcing a near-match.

Electrical safety: insulated handles are not permission to work live
Not all pliers are designed for electrical work. Home Depot advises checking that a tool is designed for its intended job and says handles should be insulated for shock protection when used on or around wires. Insulated handles alone do not make every electrical task safe. Do not work on energized wiring; if a job involves electrical hazards and you are not qualified to handle it safely, use a qualified electrician.
Choosing a basic set
A mixed pliers set can be a practical starting point if it contains the types you will use. Set contents differ, so check the actual listing rather than assuming that every set includes the same combination of slip-joint, groove-joint, long-nose, or cutting pliers. The useful choice is the one that covers your likely tasks without substituting a tool with the wrong jaw or cutting design.
