The best place to buy a laptop depends on what matters most: manufacturer stores are strongest for exact configurations and education pricing; Costco stands out for members who value its advertised two-year computer warranty and 90-day return policy; Best Buy is convenient for local pickup and open-box inspection; and Amazon is useful for broad inventory and deal hunting when you verify the seller and terms. Compare the identical laptop configuration across all relevant channels before paying.
Compare the main places to buy a laptop
| Channel | Best for | Check before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer store (Apple, Lenovo, Dell, Microsoft) | Exact specifications, education pricing and direct support | Eligibility for student pricing, delivery estimate, return or restocking rules and warranty tier |
| Best Buy | Local pickup, broad Windows and Mac selection, open-box inspection and in-store service | Whether Best Buy or a Marketplace seller is the seller, item-specific return exceptions and membership terms |
| Costco | Members prioritizing a stated warranty and longer computer return window | Membership cost, stock, and the warranty and return terms attached to the exact laptop SKU |
| Amazon | Large inventory and rotating Chromebook, mid-range and MacBook deals | Seller identity, condition, fulfillment, manufacturer warranty and the applicable return window |
When a manufacturer store is the best choice
Choose your exact configuration
Buying from Apple, Lenovo, Dell or Microsoft is usually the cleanest route when you need a particular processor, memory, storage capacity, display or port selection. Manufacturer stores often offer configurations that retailers do not stock, reducing the risk of accidentally comparing laptops with different components.

Use education pricing when eligible
Apple says customers can purchase with Education Pricing through the Apple Store Online, an Apple Store location, the Apple Store app or by calling Retail Customer Care. Confirm eligibility and the final delivered price before ordering; student offers and qualifying products can change.

Consider direct support and warranty tiers
The manufacturer is the direct point of contact for warranty service and configuration-specific support. Read the warranty tier, accidental-damage coverage, return rules and delivery estimate rather than assuming every laptop includes the same protection.

When Amazon is safe and useful
Verify who is selling and shipping
Amazon can have attractive prices on Chromebooks, mid-range Windows laptops and MacBooks, but a listing may involve a third-party seller. Check the seller name, whether Amazon or the seller fulfills the order, the laptop’s condition and the manufacturer-warranty wording.

Read the listing-specific return terms
Do not assume every Amazon laptop has the same return window. Save the product-page terms, confirm that the model number and specifications match your target configuration, and inspect the package and serial number promptly after delivery.
A step-by-step buying process
- Define the configuration. Write down the operating system, processor family, RAM, storage, screen size, graphics capability and required ports.
- Start with the manufacturer. Check configuration choices, education pricing if applicable, delivery timing and warranty options.
- Check Costco. If you are a member, compare the same model and verify the advertised two-year warranty and 90-day return policy on that SKU.
- Check Best Buy. Compare a new item, local pickup and open-box inventory, then read the seller-specific return terms.
- Check Amazon. Match the exact model and configuration, and verify seller, condition, fulfillment, warranty and returns.
- Calculate the delivered total. Include membership fees, discounts, sales tax, shipping, required warranty coverage and essential accessories.
How to compare laptop listings accurately
- Match the processor model or family, not just the brand name.
- Confirm RAM and storage capacities; two laptops with the same product name may differ.
- Check display size and resolution, graphics hardware and every port you need.
- Compare the warranty and return period alongside the purchase price.
- Record the seller and condition, especially for Marketplace and third-party listings.
- Recheck stock, promotions, delivery estimates and policy language immediately before checkout.
What can change after you compare prices
No retailer is always cheapest. Promotions, inventory, seller identity, student eligibility, shipping times and return policies can change quickly. The retailer terms summarized here were checked on September 28, 2026; verify current terms before purchase, particularly for a deal-specific recommendation.
