What a Pixel Call Screen alternative must do
Pixel Call Screen is more than a blacklist. An assistant answers an unfamiliar call, asks the caller to identify themselves and explain the purpose, then lets you read the exchange before deciding whether to join. That distinction matters when comparing Android features: caller ID and automatic blocking reduce interruptions, while conversational screening gives you context without making you speak to the caller.

Availability is conditional rather than universal. Your phone model, Android and manufacturer software versions, country, language, SIM, carrier and app version can all change which controls appear. A feature that is documented for one Galaxy generation or one country should not be assumed to work on every Android phone.

1. Galaxy S26 Call Screening: the closest Samsung substitute
Samsung’s official description of the Galaxy S26 series Call Screening feature is the nearest match to Pixel’s workflow. The Call assistant answers an incoming call, asks the caller who they are and why they are calling, and presents the interaction as text on your screen. You can assess the response before deciding whether to take over the call.

What makes it different from ordinary spam blocking
- It is conversational: the caller is prompted for an identity and purpose instead of being judged only by a number database.
- You remain the decision-maker: the text exchange gives you information before you speak.
- It is built into the phone: no separate caller-ID subscription is required merely to access the S26 feature.
Important limits
Samsung confirms the feature for the Galaxy S26 series, not for every Galaxy model. Samsung also warns that names, menu paths and screen layouts can differ by model, software version and app version. The cited documentation does not establish a complete country, language or carrier matrix, and it does not confirm that older Galaxy generations will receive the same capability. Treat S26 compatibility as the documented baseline and check your exact device before buying or updating for this feature.
How to check for it
- Install the latest system and Samsung Phone app updates offered for your Galaxy.
- Open the Samsung Phone app and look through its call-assistant or call-screening settings. The exact label and path can vary with software.
- Enable Call Screening if the control is present, then review any language, greeting or automatic-answer choices shown on your device.
- Test with a permitted, trusted caller. Confirm that the assistant answers, the caller is prompted for identity and purpose, and the exchange appears as text.
If the setting is absent, do not infer that the phone is defective. It may not be supported for your model, software build, country, language or carrier. Samsung’s availability warning is the reason to verify the exact configuration rather than follow a menu path copied from another Galaxy model.
2. Samsung Smart Call and Hiya: strong identification, not a live intermediary
Samsung Smart Call, powered by Hiya, is designed to identify callers and protect against spam. On supported Samsung phones, the integration can label suspicious numbers and provide blocking controls in the Phone experience. Hiya says its services reach more than 450 million users worldwide and that its app is available for any mobile device.

- Helping you block unwanted numbers through the phone’s call controls.
- Reducing repeat nuisance calls without requiring you to answer them.
What it does not establish
The Smart Call and Hiya documentation describes caller ID and spam protection; it does not claim that Smart Call conducts the same two-way, text-visible conversation as Pixel Call Screen. If your requirement is “tell me who is calling and why before I answer,” Smart Call may identify the number but cannot be treated as a documented conversational substitute.

Using the Hiya app instead
Hiya’s own product information says the app is available for mobile devices, making it an option when your Android phone does not expose Samsung’s integration. Before installing, review the current permissions, privacy terms, language support and regional availability shown in the app listing. Third-party behavior and pricing can change independently of Samsung’s Phone app.
3. Phone by Google on selected Android phones
Phone by Google can provide a genuine Call Screen workflow beyond Pixel, but only in a limited configuration. Google’s Phone Help says manual Call Screen is available on selected Android devices in the US and Canada. Manual means you start screening from the incoming-call interface; it is not a promise that every unknown call will be answered automatically.
Manual screening workflow
- Use Phone by Google as the device’s active phone app and keep it updated.
- When an eligible unknown call arrives, look for the Call Screen control on the incoming-call screen.
- Start screening. The assistant asks the caller to identify themselves and explain why they are calling.
- Read the conversation as it appears and choose whether to answer, continue screening or reject the call using the controls presented.
Google’s product guidance describes the purpose as finding out who is calling and why before you pick up. Whether the button appears depends on the phone, SIM and regional requirements; the US-and-Canada statement applies to selected devices, not to every Android handset sold there.

Automatic versus manual availability
Google’s automatic Call Screen table lists Pixel phones in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US. That country list is not evidence that automatic screening is available on Samsung or other Android models. Google also lists manual screening for additional Pixel countries, but the availability of a particular model, SIM and language still has to be checked against Google’s current requirements.

How to check a non-Pixel phone
- Confirm that Phone by Google is installed, updated and set as the default phone app if your device permits that choice.
- Check the Phone app’s settings for Call Screen or spam-and-call-screening controls.
- Place the phone in a listed region with a compatible SIM and test whether the incoming-call screen exposes manual Call Screen.
- If the control is missing, do not sideload an unrelated package or assume that changing a language setting will unlock it; Google’s eligibility checks are device- and account-dependent.
4. Caller-ID and spam-blocking apps
A caller-ID app is the practical fallback when your phone lacks a built-in conversational assistant. These apps compare incoming numbers with their own databases, display an identity or risk label and may block calls that match spam rules. They solve the “should I answer this number?” problem, but they do not automatically solve the “ask the caller what they want while I watch” problem.
When an app is the right choice
- Your Galaxy model predates the documented S26 Call Screening feature.
- Phone by Google does not show manual Call Screen on your device or in your country.
- You receive frequent robocalls and want database-based labels and blocking.
- You need one tool that can work across different Android manufacturers.
Questions to answer before installation
- What call-log, contacts, phone and notification permissions does the app request?
- Does number matching happen on the device or through a remote service?
- Can you disable automatic blocking and review borderline calls first?
- Which countries, languages and Android versions are supported today?
- Is the core feature free, limited by a subscription, or restricted after a trial?
Truecaller is an example of the caller-ID-and-blocking category, but its current assistant behavior, regional support and pricing should be verified directly before relying on it as a Pixel Call Screen replacement. No caller-ID database is perfect: legitimate businesses can be mislabeled, recycled numbers can inherit old reputations, and a new scam number may have no history.
Call screening is not the same as scam detection
Google’s fake-call detection is a separate safety feature. Google says it is rolling out globally to Android 12 and newer, beginning with Pixel devices, and that Pixel and Samsung users can enable Scam Detection. Its purpose is to detect impersonation or deepfake-style scam behavior during a call. It is not a general-purpose assistant that asks every unknown caller to state a name and reason.
Use the features for different jobs: Call Screen gathers information before you answer; caller ID and spam protection classify or block numbers; Scam Detection looks for scam-like behavior during a call. Enabling one does not imply that the others are available on the same phone.

Privacy and data handling
Google’s Pixel safety documentation states that, when Call Screen is enabled, screened-call information is not saved to your Google Account, Call Assist Activity page or Web & App Activity. That statement applies to the specified Google surfaces and does not describe every possible phone log, carrier record or third-party service.
Third-party caller-ID apps can use different permissions, retention periods and processing locations. Read the current privacy documentation before installation, especially if an app requests access to contacts, call history, microphone or continuous background activity. On a shared or work-managed phone, an administrator’s policy may also limit which call features can be enabled.

- Identify the exact model: write down the full Galaxy or Android model number, not merely the series name.
- Check software: install available Android, manufacturer Phone app and carrier updates.
- Confirm country and language: screening catalogs are regional, and supported languages can differ from the phone’s display language.
- Check the SIM and carrier: Google specifically says SIM and device requirements apply to Call Screen.
- Verify the default dialer: Phone by Google controls will not necessarily appear when another app handles calls.
- Look for the control in the app: absence of a menu is evidence of an eligibility limit, not proof that a hidden switch exists.
- Test safely: use a trusted caller and confirm what the assistant says, what text is shown and how you reclaim the call.
Common problems and fixes
The Call Screen button is missing
Check the model, country, SIM, default phone app and software version first. Manual Google screening is limited to selected Android devices in the US and Canada, while Samsung’s documented built-in conversational feature is tied to the Galaxy S26 series. If those conditions do not match, use Smart Call, Hiya or another caller-ID service instead of repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
Calls are identified but never answered by an assistant
You are probably using caller ID or spam protection rather than conversational screening. Smart Call and similar apps label or block numbers; they are not documented to conduct the Pixel-style exchange. Use a device and region that expose Call Screening if the conversation itself is essential.

A legitimate caller is blocked
Open the Phone app’s blocked-number or spam settings and remove the number from the block list. Prefer warning-only labels when you are expecting deliveries, medical calls or unfamiliar business numbers. Database decisions are probabilistic, so review the rule that caused the block rather than assuming the caller’s identity is proven.
The feature appeared after an update and then changed
Manufacturer app updates can rename controls or move them. Samsung explicitly notes that names, menus and screen configurations vary by model, software and app version. Recheck the current Phone app settings and read the feature description shown on your own device.
Which option should you choose?
Choose Galaxy S26 Call Screening when…
You are buying or already own a Galaxy S26 series phone, and your priority is an assistant that asks an unknown caller who they are and why they are calling. This is the closest documented Samsung match to Pixel’s intermediary workflow. Verify local availability before purchase because Samsung’s public description does not establish every country, language or carrier combination.

Choose Smart Call or Hiya when…
You mainly want caller names, spam warnings and number blocking. This route is less intrusive than answering every unknown call and can help on Galaxy models without the S26 feature. It should be selected for identification and protection, not because it promises a live conversation.
Try Phone by Google manual Call Screen when…
You use a selected Android phone in the US or Canada, have a compatible SIM and can set Phone by Google as the active dialer. Manual screening is worth checking because it can reproduce the essential “who and why” exchange, but the control may not appear on your particular handset.
Use a caller-ID app when…
Your phone has no eligible built-in screening and your main pain is spam volume. Compare permissions and privacy policies, keep blocking rules reversible, and do not treat a database label as definitive proof of identity.
Bottom line for Galaxy and Android buyers
For Samsung owners, Galaxy S26 Call Screening is the closest documented alternative to Pixel Call Screen: it answers through an assistant, asks for the caller’s identity and purpose, and displays the exchange as text. On other Galaxy phones, Smart Call powered by Hiya is the dependable identification-and-spam layer, not a documented conversational replacement. On non-Pixel Android, Phone by Google manual Call Screen is worth checking in the US and Canada on selected devices, while automatic screening remains listed primarily for Pixel phones in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US. Model, software, country, language, SIM and carrier requirements decide what you actually receive.
