Best Pistol for Boss Fights in Valor Mortis: Damage, Range and Handling Compared

For most Valor Mortis boss fights, the Pistol is the best all-purpose firearm. It is not proven to have the highest single-shot damage, but it gives you the safest combination of reach, quick access to ranged utility, weak-point pressure and ammunition sustainability in a game built around parries. Keep it ready for exposed targets, ranged stagger attempts and disposable enemies, then change to the Blunderbuss when a boss is safely within point-blank range and you have a reliable opening.

The Musket may offer a better long-range or burst profile according to secondary guides, but no authoritative numeric table establishes its damage or range advantage. “Handling” is likewise best understood as timing, access and firing safety rather than a published stat. The recommendations below therefore separate documented behavior from assumptions that cannot be verified.

Verdict: use the Pistol as your default boss firearm

Valor Mortis makes parrying the center of combat. GamesRadar describes the strongest encounters as brutal parry-offs, and TechRadar also presents the pistol as one part of a wider weapon-and-ability kit rather than a replacement for melee timing. That changes what “best pistol” means: the winning weapon is the one that creates useful openings without asking you to abandon the parry rhythm.

The Pistol fits that job. It can reach weak points when closing distance is dangerous, remove one-hit soldiers during a boss sequence, and provide a ranged attempt at a stagger when the arena gives you a safe firing window. Its value is repeatability and flexibility, not a verified top damage number. You can keep it available through several phases, use it against adds, and return to parrying without committing to a long animation.

Choose the Blunderbuss for a different situation: a boss is close, committed to an attack or otherwise exposed, and a point-blank blast can be delivered without trading damage. PowerPyx specifically documents that a close-range Blunderbuss shot can do “quite a bit of damage.” That is a burst opportunity, not a reason to carry it as your only answer at every distance.

The Musket belongs in the long-range or burst discussion, but its advantage should be treated as provisional. Secondary weapon guides describe it in those terms without supplying a developer-verified damage, range, reload or handling table. Do not turn that description into a precise ranking or publish invented values.

What the Pistol actually contributes in a boss arena

Weak-point access

Boss arenas often punish a player who stands in front of a target for too long. A pistol shot lets you test an exposed weak point from a distance where you can still watch the boss’s animation and prepare a parry. The important benefit is not a claimed damage multiplier; it is the ability to convert a brief visual opening into pressure without forcing a full approach.

Quick removal of disposable enemies

PowerPyx documents pistol shots being used to remove one-hit soldiers during boss sequences. Those enemies can interrupt a parry exchange, occupy the camera or make a retreat unsafe. Spending a round to clear one is a practical use of the weapon even when the boss itself is not vulnerable.

Ranged stagger attempts

A pistol can support a stagger plan when the boss briefly exposes a target and you cannot safely reach it. Treat this as an opportunity rather than a guaranteed result: the available evidence does not provide a universal posture-damage value or a shot count for every boss. Fire when the window is clear, then return to the defense pattern instead of standing still to force a result.

A weapon that fits parry-first play

Because Valor Mortis emphasizes parries, a firearm must be judged by how easily you can put it away and resume defense. The Pistol’s general-purpose role makes it the least disruptive choice for a player whose primary plan is still parrying. It supports the melee loop instead of asking you to replace it with sustained shooting.

Damage, range and handling compared

No authoritative published figure currently establishes Pistol damage, range, reload time, handling, posture damage or upgrade scaling. The comparison below uses documented roles and clearly marks what remains unquantified.

Weapon Damage profile Useful distance Handling in a parry-led fight Best boss use
Pistol General-purpose ranged damage; no verified top-damage value Flexible ranged utility; exact effective range not stated Easy to keep available for short firing windows, adds and weak points; no numerical handling stat stated Default firearm, weak points, one-hit soldiers and cautious stagger attempts
Blunderbuss Documented close-range burst; PowerPyx says a point-blank shot can do “quite a bit of damage” Point-blank or very short range Requires a safe commitment near the boss; a poor choice if the opening is uncertain High-confidence close-range punish after a boss commits
Musket Secondary guides describe it as a longer-range or burst option; exact damage is not officially quantified Presented by those guides as the longer-range alternative; exact range is not stated Potentially useful when distance is secure, but no verified timing or handling figures exist Situations that reward distance or a deliberate burst, after testing its timing yourself

This table is intentionally qualitative. A value marked “not stated” is not a hidden zero and should not be replaced with a wiki number of uncertain origin. Boss health, hit locations and encounter scripting can make an apparent damage ranking change from one fight to another.

When each firearm is the better choice

Use the Pistol when the arena is unstable

Start with the Pistol when a boss has adds, mixed attack distances or several short exposure windows. Its role is to give you an answer while you are still learning the pattern. Clear a one-hit soldier if it would interfere with your next parry, tag a visible weak point, and keep enough attention for the boss’s next attack. This is the safest default because it does not depend on the target remaining within arm’s reach.

Use the Blunderbuss after a confirmed commitment

Do not walk toward a boss simply because the Blunderbuss has better burst potential. Wait until the boss has committed to an animation, missed, or entered another state in which a point-blank blast is unlikely to be interrupted. Fire once the distance is genuinely safe, then be ready to resume parrying. If you cannot identify the recovery window, the Pistol’s lower-commitment shot is the sounder choice.

Consider the Musket only when distance is the plan

A Musket can make sense if you are deliberately fighting from farther away and have already learned its firing rhythm. Secondary guides position it as the long-range or burst firearm, but that is not a substitute for official numbers. Confirm how its animation affects your ability to block, parry and reposition in the specific encounter before spending resources around that assumption.

Bullet parries are part of Pistol ammunition management

Lyrical Games states: “You can parry bullets, and every bullet parry gives you a pistol round.” This is the clearest documented interaction between the game’s defensive system and pistol ammunition. When a boss sequence includes gun-using enemies, a successful bullet parry is not only damage avoidance; it also restores a Pistol round.

Build the habit in a controlled order:

  1. Identify which enemy is firing and watch for the projectile rather than the weapon model alone.
  2. Stay at a distance where the incoming bullet is visible and your parry input is not competing with an unavoidable melee swing.
  3. Parry the bullet when its timing is reliable; do not chase a round if doing so would put you in the boss’s attack range.
  4. Use the returned Pistol round on a weak point, a one-hit soldier or a clearly safe stagger attempt.
  5. After firing, re-center on the boss and resume the normal parry rhythm instead of staring at the ammunition count.

This creates a sustainable loop only when the arena supplies bullets and you can parry them consistently. It is not a promise of unlimited ammunition in every boss fight. Against a melee-only encounter, ammunition remains a finite resource, so reserve shots for targets that matter.

Handling: think in windows, not hidden statistics

There is no verified numerical handling stat to compare across these firearms. In practice, handling has four parts: how quickly you can access the weapon, how long firing commits you, whether the shot leaves you able to react, and how naturally you can switch back to parrying.

Access

Keep the Pistol on the weapon slot you can reach without looking away from the boss. A firearm that technically has excellent range is not useful if changing to it causes you to miss a telegraphed attack. Weapon switching is part of the execution challenge emphasized by coverage of the game’s combat.

Commitment

A Pistol shot should be reserved for a moment in which the boss cannot immediately punish the firing animation. The Blunderbuss demands an even stricter check because its value depends on being close. Treat every shot as a decision about your next defensive input, not as free damage.

Recovery

After firing, recover your camera and spacing before selecting another target. If the boss is already moving, a second shot may be less valuable than a clean parry. The best-handling firearm is therefore the one whose rhythm you can execute without losing visual contact.

Switch discipline

Use one weapon for one purpose during a phase. For example, leave the Pistol equipped while clearing adds, switch to the Blunderbuss only for a known close punish, then return to the Pistol or melee immediately. Unplanned cycling creates more risk than a small theoretical damage advantage can repay.

A step-by-step Pistol plan for a new boss

  1. Learn the arena before spending ammunition. Identify where you can retreat, where adds appear and which attacks leave the boss exposed. Your first attempts should prioritize visual information over damage.
  2. Set the Pistol as the default ranged option. This gives you a consistent answer for a weak point or one-hit soldier while you learn the pattern.
  3. Mark safe firing windows. Look for recovery animations, missed lunges and moments when the boss is facing elsewhere. Do not classify a window as safe merely because the boss is far away; projectiles or a sudden gap close can still interrupt you.
  4. Clear interference early. If a one-hit soldier can break your next parry exchange, remove it with a Pistol shot. If it is isolated and harmless, keep the round for a more important opening.
  5. Test one shot at a time. Observe whether the hit reaches the intended weak point and whether the boss changes behavior. Avoid emptying the magazine while you are still learning the response.
  6. Practice bullet parries where available. A successful bullet parry returns a Pistol round according to Lyrical Games, but only attempt it when the projectile timing is clearer than the melee threat.
  7. Introduce the Blunderbuss deliberately. Once you can predict a close-range recovery, switch for that specific punish. If the boss does not reliably remain exposed, keep the Pistol equipped.
  8. Review the attempt by failure type. If you were hit during firing, shorten your commitment window. If you ran out of rounds, improve target selection or bullet-parry timing before assuming you need a different firearm.

How to spend upgrade currency

PC Gamer reports that Valor Mortis does not have boss weapons, so you do not need to save clot for a special boss-drop pistol. That removes a common source of hesitation: there is no documented boss-exclusive firearm waiting later that makes every current upgrade a mistake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spend currency according to the role you actually use:

  • Choose Pistol upgrades when ranged utility, add clearing and weak-point attempts are central to your approach across multiple encounters.
  • Choose Blunderbuss upgrades when you consistently reach safe point-blank openings and use the weapon as a planned burst punish rather than an emergency gamble.
  • Choose Musket upgrades cautiously until its distance and burst behavior are confirmed in your own play. Secondary guides do not establish official scaling figures.
  • Prioritize execution before specialization. A better parry rhythm and cleaner target selection can provide more practical value than an upgrade chosen for an unverified damage ranking.

Because no official table establishes upgrade scaling for damage, reload, posture or handling, avoid calculating a return from unverified numbers. Compare how often a weapon creates a safe, repeatable advantage in the fights you are actually losing.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Trying to make the Pistol a primary damage dealer

The evidence supports a flexible utility role, not a claim that the Pistol has the highest boss damage. If your shots are producing little progress, use them to reach weak points, remove interference or create a stagger attempt, then let parries and melee punish windows do the central work.

Using the Blunderbuss at unsafe distance

Its documented strength is close-range burst. Firing from a distance where the blast is unreliable wastes the weapon’s defining advantage and may leave you exposed. Wait for a committed attack or another unmistakable opening.

Assuming the Musket has proven superior statistics

Long-range descriptions from secondary guides are not an official stat sheet. Treat the Musket as a possible distance option, test its timing, and do not repeat exact damage or range claims that have not been published by a reliable authority.

Ignoring firearm users during a boss phase

Gun-using enemies change the ammunition equation because bullet parries can return Pistol rounds. Leaving them active may make the arena harder to read; clearing them or learning their projectile timing can improve both survival and ammunition flow.

Saving every upgrade for an imaginary boss weapon

There are no boss weapons to reserve clot for, according to PC Gamer. Holding all currency indefinitely can leave your current tool underdeveloped for no documented benefit. Invest in the firearm role that matches your repeatable plan.

Decision checklist before you enter

  • Can I identify at least one safe Pistol firing window in this arena?
  • Are there one-hit soldiers whose removal will protect my next parry?
  • Does this phase contain firearm users whose bullets I can realistically parry?
  • Is the boss close and committed enough for a safe Blunderbuss blast?
  • Am I choosing the Musket for a tested distance plan, or only because a guide called it long-range?
  • Will switching weapons leave me unable to respond to the next attack?
  • Am I spending clot on a role I use repeatedly rather than waiting for a boss weapon that the game does not provide?

What is and is not known about the numbers

Players looking for a spreadsheet-style answer should be cautious. No authoritative source available for this comparison publishes a numeric Pistol damage value, maximum range, reload time, handling rating, posture damage or upgrade-scaling table. The same gap applies to a precise Musket-versus-Pistol damage or range calculation. Any guide that presents those figures needs to identify an in-game data source or a reproducible test; otherwise, the values are not established facts.

That limitation does not make the choice unknowable. The documented roles are enough to make a practical decision: the Pistol is the flexible default, the Blunderbuss is the close-range burst specialist, and the Musket is a possible distance-oriented alternative whose exact advantage remains unverified. Judge each by safe effective distance, burst value during a real opening, weak-point and stagger utility, ammunition sustainability and compatibility with parry timing.
