Among documented options, Fiskars Softgrip Pinking Shears (article 1070024), KAI N5350 9-inch Pinking Shears and Gingher 7-1/2in Pinking Shears are sensible models to investigate, but the available specifications do not establish a universal winner or a sharpness ranking.

What pinking shears do
Pinking shears have toothed blades that leave a repeating zigzag edge instead of the straight edge produced by ordinary fabric scissors. That profile is useful when you want to finish a cut edge, reduce the visual prominence of a raw edge, or add a deliberate decorative pattern.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fiskars describes its Softgrip model as cutting “a zig-zag edge to reduce fabric fraying and unraveling.” SINGER similarly says its Gingher Pinking Shears leave a zigzag pattern that helps prevent fraying and keeps projects looking crisp. Those are manufacturer descriptions of the intended benefit, not independent tests showing that one pair stops fraying in every fabric, wash cycle or seam construction.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A pinked edge is not a replacement for straight cutting. Pattern pieces, long yardage cuts and accurately trimmed seam allowances still call for ordinary fabric shears. Pinking shears belong alongside them in a broader cutting kit.
When the zigzag edge is the right choice
- Finishing a woven edge where a zigzag profile is wanted.
- Creating a decorative edge on a project that calls for visible points.
- Reducing fraying as described by the particular manufacturer, while recognising that fabric type and handling still affect the result.
When to use another tool
- Use dressmaker shears for long, straight fabric cuts and pattern cutting.
- Use thread snips for loose threads and small trimming jobs.
- Consider elevated tabletop shears when keeping fabric lift low is important; Fiskars lists this as a separate category from pinking shears.
The buying criteria that matter most
1. Edge purpose and tooth pattern
Start with the finished edge, not the brand name. Every pair in this guide is intended to make a sawtooth or zigzag cut. Confirm that the teeth are the pattern your project requires and that the product is actually labelled as pinking shears. A straight-blade fabric scissor may be excellent at cutting but cannot produce this edge.
Because the sources do not provide tooth spacing or a comparative edge test, do not assume that a longer blade, a larger handle or a higher price automatically creates a better zigzag. If a retailer shows close-up photographs, inspect whether the teeth appear even and fully formed across the cutting length.

Construction details can tell you what the maker built, but they are not a substitute for comparative testing.
- Fiskars lists high-grade, precision-ground stainless-steel blades for Softgrip Pinking Shears, article 1070024.
- SINGER describes Gingher blades as hand-finished forged steel with a double-plated chrome-over-nickel finish.
- The available KAI result confirms the N5350 as a 9-inch pinking-shears model but does not establish blade material or finish.
“Stainless steel,” “forged steel” and a plated finish describe material and manufacturing claims. The supplied specifications do not measure initial sharpness, edge retention, cutting force or durability, so those performance conclusions should not be inferred.
3. Handle shape and effort
Handle fit matters more than a specification sheet when a project involves repeated cuts. Fiskars lists a contoured Softgrip handle on its Softgrip model. Its catalogue also identifies spring-assisted opening on EasyAction lines, although that feature is not established for article 1070024 unless the exact package says so.

Match the handle to your hand strength and the way you cut. A contoured grip may feel more secure to one sewist and too restrictive to another. A spring-assisted mechanism can be relevant for users who find repeated opening tiring, but none of the cited sources supplies a measured reduction in strain or fatigue. Treat these as fit features to check, not proven ergonomic outcomes.
4. Overall size and hand fit
Longer shears can cover more edge per closing motion, while a shorter pair may be easier to control in a small hand or on detailed work. The named models are not all the same size:
| Model | Stated size | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Fiskars Softgrip Pinking Shears, article 1070024 | Catalogue dimensions are packaging measurements | Do not treat those figures as blade length or usable cutting length. |
| KAI N5350 | 9 inches | The official search result identifies a 9-inch pinking-shears model. |
| Gingher 7-1/2in Pinking Shears | 7-1/2 inches | SINGER’s product page uses this size in the product name. |
Before ordering, compare the seller’s measurement convention. “Overall length,” “blade length” and “package dimensions” are different numbers. Place the closed shears in your hand, if possible, and check whether your fingers can open and close the handles without forcing your grip.
5. Handedness
Confirm the exact orientation rather than assuming any pair works equally well for both hands. Fiskars says its left-handed scissors use reversed blades and handles designed for left-handed users. The cited Softgrip pinking-shear listing does not establish that a left-handed variant exists.
A left-handed sewist should look for an explicit left-hand designation, ask the seller whether the blades are reversed, and confirm that the listing refers to the same article or model number. “Ambidextrous handle” wording alone does not prove that the cutting geometry is reversed.
6. Stock, seller and support
Product pages and marketplace listings change. Check the exact model number, current stock, seller, return policy and hand orientation immediately before purchase. At the time the cited SINGER page was accessed, the Gingher listing was marked sold out; that is a volatile snapshot, not a permanent availability statement.

Documented models to investigate
The following are evidence-based starting points, not a ranked test. No source here provides an independent head-to-head comparison, user panel, sharpness score or long-term durability result.
| Model | Documented specifications | Best reason to investigate | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiskars Softgrip Pinking Shears, article 1070024 | High-grade, precision-ground stainless-steel blades; zigzag edge intended to reduce fraying and unraveling; contoured Softgrip handle. Catalogue published for 2026. | A clear feature set for shoppers who prioritise stainless-steel construction and a contoured grip. | Catalogue dimensions are packaging measurements; no independent performance or left-handed version is established. |
| KAI N5350 9-inch Pinking Shears | Official result identifies a 9-inch pinking-shears model. | A candidate for someone specifically seeking a 9-inch format. | The page returned a 503 error during the source check, so blade, handle, warranty and availability details require direct verification. |
| Gingher 7-1/2in Pinking Shears | Sawtooth blades; hand-finished forged steel; double-plated chrome-over-nickel finish; zigzag edge described as helping prevent fraying. | A shorter named option with a documented forged-steel and plated-blade specification. | The accessed SINGER page showed the item sold out; recheck stock before treating it as a purchase option. |
| Prym 9-inch Serrated Pinking Shears | Search-result metadata identifies a 9-inch serrated pinking-shears product. | Another model name to verify when comparing 9-inch formats. | The product page could not be verified in the supplied material, so construction, handle details, price and availability are not stated. |
Closer look at each documented option
Fiskars Softgrip Pinking Shears (article 1070024)
The 2026 Fiskars Creating catalogue presents this as a conventional feature-led choice: precision-ground stainless-steel blades, a zigzag edge intended to reduce fraying and unraveling, and an ergonomic contoured Softgrip handle. Those details make it easy to match the model to a buyer who values a named steel specification and a shaped grip.
Read the catalogue dimensions carefully. They describe the package, not the blade or the usable cutting span. If the listing you find repeats those figures without labelling them, ask the seller for the actual shear length before comparing it with a 9-inch or 7-1/2-inch model. Also verify whether the seller is offering article 1070024 rather than a visually similar Fiskars scissor.
KAI N5350 9-inch Pinking Shears
The official KAI result establishes the model name and 9-inch size. That is enough to include it in a shortlist for someone who wants a longer format, but not enough to describe its steel, handle geometry, spring action, warranty or current stock. The page returned a 503 error during verification, so obtain those details from the live product page or an authorised seller before relying on them.
Gingher 7-1/2in Pinking Shears
SINGER’s product description gives more construction detail: sawtooth blades made from hand-finished forged steel with a double-plated chrome-over-nickel finish. It describes the zigzag edge as helping prevent fraying and keeping projects looking crisp. These statements explain the design intent; they do not prove that the Gingher pair cuts more cleanly or lasts longer than another model.
The same page was sold out when accessed. Treat that as a point-in-time status check. If a current listing appears elsewhere, match the 7-1/2-inch name and the exact product identity before assuming it is the same item.

How to choose by sewing situation
For occasional edge finishing
Prioritise a comfortable handle and a clearly identified zigzag edge. You may not need the longest format if your projects are small, but you do need a pair that fits your hand and is easy to control. A model such as the Fiskars Softgrip is worth investigating when its contoured grip and stainless-steel specification align with your preferences.
Recommended Free Tools
For frequent, repeated cutting
Put hand fit and opening effort ahead of marketing language. Test whether the handles open naturally for you and whether the closed shear sits securely without pinching. If you are considering a spring-assisted product line, confirm that the spring feature belongs to the exact model rather than to a neighbouring EasyAction listing.
For a longer cutting span
Compare the documented 9-inch KAI N5350 with other listings that state 9 inches, but verify whether the number is overall length or another measurement. Do not use the Fiskars package dimensions as a direct length comparison.
For a smaller or more compact format
The Gingher model is named as 7-1/2 inches. Its forged-steel and plated-blade description may appeal to buyers who prefer that construction, subject to current availability and a comfortable hand fit.
For left-handed sewing
Start with products that explicitly identify left-handed construction. Fiskars documents reversed blades and handles across its left-handed scissor collection, but the cited Softgrip pinking listing does not confirm a left-handed edition. Ask for confirmation before ordering rather than relying on photographs.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Define the edge. Confirm that you need a zigzag finish, not a straight cut.
- Write down your hand and size requirements. Note right- or left-hand use, preferred overall length and any grip limitation.
- Identify the exact model. Record the article or model number, such as Fiskars 1070024 or KAI N5350.
- Separate package size from shear size. Reject comparisons that present packaging measurements as blade length.
- Read the construction line. Distinguish documented steel and finish claims from unverified assumptions about sharpness or durability.
- Check the handle in person when possible. Open and close it several times with your normal grip; stop if your fingers pinch or your wrist twists.
- Verify orientation. For a left-handed purchase, obtain explicit confirmation of reversed blades and handles.
- Check live commerce details. Confirm stock, seller, return terms and the exact product photograph or identifier on the day you order.
Using pinking shears without compromising your cut
- Make the straight cut first when accuracy matters. Use ordinary fabric shears to establish the pattern line or trim a long edge.
- Leave the intended seam allowance. Pinking shears remove material in a tooth pattern, so align the blades with the allowance you planned rather than cutting into the stitching line.
- Keep the fabric supported. Lay it flat and guide the edge steadily so the teeth follow one continuous line.
- Close the blades fully for each bite. Partial closures can leave an uneven tooth pattern; use controlled strokes instead of forcing the handles.
- Inspect the finished edge. Check the points and valleys for missed sections before assembling the project. The zigzag is intended to help with fraying, not to guarantee that every textile will remain intact.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying pinking shears as an all-purpose fabric scissor
The teeth are the point of the tool. If most of your work involves straight pattern lines, buy or retain ordinary dressmaker shears as well and reserve the pinking pair for edge finishing.

Assuming a material claim proves performance
Precision-ground stainless steel, forged steel and plated finishes are useful specifications, but the available sources do not compare cutting force, fray reduction or service life. Choose on documented fit and intended use rather than an unsupported “sharpest” or “most durable” label.
Confusing package dimensions with cutting length
This is especially important for the Fiskars catalogue entry. Ask for overall shear length and, if relevant, blade length before comparing it with the 9-inch KAI or 7-1/2-inch Gingher names.
Ignoring hand orientation
A handle that looks symmetrical may still be paired with blades designed for one hand. Confirm the geometry, particularly if you normally cut left-handed.
Trusting an old stock or price claim
No price is established in the supplied product information, and availability can change. The Gingher sold-out notice demonstrates why a listing should be checked at the moment of purchase rather than copied from an older guide.
What can responsibly be called “best”
There is no defensible universal winner in the documented evidence. A responsible recommendation is conditional:
- Choose the Fiskars model for investigation if its documented stainless-steel blades and contoured Softgrip handle fit your priorities, after confirming the article number and actual dimensions.
- Investigate the KAI N5350 if a 9-inch format is your starting requirement, but verify the missing construction and availability details directly.
- Consider the Gingher 7-1/2-inch model if its shorter size and documented forged-steel, chrome-over-nickel finish suit your hand, subject to finding current stock.
- Use any other listing, including the Prym 9-inch result, only after verification of its live specifications, seller and orientation.
That approach keeps the decision tied to edge purpose, hand fit and verified product information rather than an unsupported ranking.
