Direct answer: For films, start with FILMMAKER MODE (or Movie when Filmmaker Mode is unavailable), leave the mode’s contrast, colour and black-level defaults intact, and switch Motion Clarity off unless you prefer interpolated motion. For live sport, try Sports and add only as much Motion Clarity as removes blur without creating halos or a video-like look. For games, select Game or Game Master, enable compatible VRR and automatic low-latency features, and use the appropriate high-refresh HDMI input and cable.
Those are safe starting points, not universal calibration numbers. TCL says available controls depend on the content, input, picture mode, TV model, size, region and firmware. Set each format while it is actually playing, and treat the UK P8L guidance and TCL’s feature claims as model-specific advice rather than proof that every P8L has identical hardware or measured performance.

Quick-start settings by activity
Use this table as a starting decision, then make only the small changes described in the relevant section. “Default” means the value supplied by the selected picture mode, not a number copied from another television.
Recommended Free Tools
| Use case | Picture Mode | Motion | Other controls | Why this starting point works |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Movies and scripted shows | FILMMAKER MODE; otherwise Movie | Motion Clarity off initially | Keep contrast, colour and black level at the mode defaults. Turn dynamic/adaptive enhancements off for an accuracy-first baseline where available. | Preserves the filmmaker-oriented image and avoids interpolation artefacts. |
| Live sport | Sports, or compare Sports with Movie/Filmmaker | Enable Motion Clarity only as much as needed | Reduce it again if you see halos, trails or an artificial “soap-opera” look. | Fast pans can benefit from compensation, but the best amount is viewer- and signal-dependent. |
| Console or PC gaming | Game or Game Master/low-latency mode | Do not use interpolation as a default | Enable compatible VRR, ALLM and Game Direct Sync where offered. Check HDMI input, source capability and cable rating. | Reduces processing and prioritises response; frame-rate features belong to the game and source. |
| HDR10/HDR10+ | Choose the movie or game mode while HDR is playing | Use the same activity-based motion rule | Adjust HDR controls only in HDR playback; do not transfer those changes to Dolby Vision. | TCL exposes different controls by signal format. |
| Dolby Vision | Use the available Dolby Vision picture mode | Usually off for films; preference for other content | Some controls may be locked by Dolby Vision. | The format can override or restrict ordinary picture controls. |
Before changing anything: identify the signal and the TV variant
Settings are conditional
TCL’s Google TV guide explains that picture options can change with the content, input, selected Picture Mode and exact TV model. A control may not appear until the matching signal is on screen. For example, HDR controls generally become available only when an HDR programme or game is playing. A setting changed during ordinary SDR television should therefore not be assumed to carry over to HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision.

Check size, region and firmware
The P8L name covers configurations that can differ by screen size, market and software. The model-specific UK guide dated September 3, 2026 discusses 55-, 65-, 75- and 85-inch UK sets; it does not establish one measured calibration for every size or country. A Canadian 98-inch listing documents a separate regional and size configuration. Do not treat its controls or specifications as proof that a UK P8L, or a different size, is identical.
Before following advice, open the TV’s About or Support information and note the model suffix, screen size and installed firmware. Check the label on the set or its box as well. If a menu name in this article is missing, that is more likely a signal, region, input or firmware difference than a fault.
Make changes with the real source playing
Play the film, sport broadcast or game you intend to watch, then open the TV’s picture controls. TCL provides an Apply All Picture Settings option on supported software. It lets you apply a change only to the current input or to all inputs. Use the current-input option when you want a console, set-top box or PC to behave differently; use all inputs only when you deliberately want one baseline everywhere. Picture settings can also be remembered separately for an input and mode.
Best TCL P8L settings for movies
1. Select an accuracy-oriented mode
- Start a film or series in the format you will watch.
- Open the TV’s picture menu and choose FILMMAKER MODE if it is offered for that signal.
- If it is unavailable, choose Movie.
- Watch a few familiar scenes before making any fine adjustments.
TCL describes Filmmaker Mode as preserving creator intent where supported and describes Movie as a movie-oriented preset. They are sensible accuracy-first starting points, not a guarantee that every panel measures the same way.
2. Keep the core values at their mode defaults
Leave Contrast, Colour and Black Level at the selected mode’s defaults unless you have a measured reason to change them. TCL defines Contrast as the white level, Black Level as the darkness of black areas and Brightness as overall screen brightness. Raising Black Level to make a dark room picture look brighter can lift blacks and wash out the image; it is not the correct substitute for adjusting viewing comfort.
If the image is uncomfortable in a dark or bright room, change the screen’s overall brightness or the relevant backlight/brightness control offered by your software. Keep the black-level relationship intact so shadow detail and letterbox bars remain credible. A room that is brighter than the one in which the mode was designed may require more screen brightness, but that is a comfort adjustment rather than a new colour calibration.

3. Decide how much motion processing you want
Set Motion Clarity off first for films. TCL describes it as motion compensation intended to reduce blur and judder. Interpolation can make a 24-frame-per-second film look unusually smooth and can produce halos around moving objects, double edges or a “live video” appearance. None of those artefacts means the panel is defective; they are consequences of the processing choice.

If you personally prefer smoother movement, enable Motion Clarity at the lowest level that solves your complaint and inspect difficult shots: slow camera pans, subtitles over a moving background and an actor crossing a high-contrast scene. If artefacts appear, lower the setting or return it to Off. There is no universally correct interpolation value for every viewer, film cadence or firmware.
4. Avoid stacking dynamic enhancements
For a consistent movie baseline, turn off dynamic or adaptive contrast, colour and tone enhancements when those controls are present. Such features can make a showroom image more forceful but may change brightness or colour from scene to scene. If you prefer their appearance, keep them as a clearly chosen preference rather than calling the result more accurate. The available names and switches vary by signal and model.
5. Treat HDR formats separately
With HDR10 or HDR10+ playing, reopen the picture menu and make any HDR-specific decision there. Do not assume an SDR change is inherited. With Dolby Vision, the television may expose a different mode and lock some controls; that behaviour is part of the format integration, not an indication that a missing slider needs to be forced open. Do not copy an HDR10 tone-mapping adjustment into Dolby Vision.
Best TCL P8L settings for live sport
Start with Sports, then compare
Select Sports if the broadcast offers a Sports preset. TCL describes it as improving motion for sports and other fast-moving content. Watch the same camera pans, ball tracking and scrolling score graphics in Sports and in Movie or Filmmaker Mode. Some viewers prefer Sports’ brighter, more processed presentation; others prefer the more restrained colours and contrast of Movie.

Enable Motion Clarity only when blur or judder in a pan is distracting. Increase it gradually while watching the edge of a player, a goalpost and the scoreboard. Stop when movement is clear enough. Reduce it immediately if you see bright outlines, broken lines, trails behind the ball or an overly smooth look.

A UK P8L settings guide reports a suggestion of roughly 2–3 on a ten-step motion control for one instrumented 75-inch sample. That is not a guaranteed value for other sizes, regions, firmware or broadcasts, so use it only as an example of a small amount of processing—not as a universal prescription. The broadcast’s frame rate, compression and camera quality can matter as much as the TV setting.
Balance brightness with the room
Daytime sport often needs a brighter screen than a late-night film. Raise overall screen brightness for visibility if required, but do not raise Black Level simply to brighten the whole picture. If stadium lights or a bright window make the image look harsh, compare Sports with Movie before adding more dynamic processing. Your viewing distance and room reflections can change which preset is comfortable.
Best TCL P8L settings for gaming
1. Enter the low-latency mode
- Connect the console or PC and select that HDMI input.
- Open Picture Mode and choose Game or Game Master, depending on the software version.
- Enable Game Direct Sync or the equivalent low-latency control if it is offered for the signal.
- Turn on compatible VRR and automatic low-latency features such as ALLM on both the source and TV.
- Confirm the source has actually switched to the intended resolution and refresh rate.
TCL describes Game Direct Sync as a control intended to reduce input lag for certain signals. Exact labels and availability vary, so the presence of a Game menu does not prove that every console, PC or HDMI input supports every feature.
2. Use the correct HDMI input and cable for high refresh
The UK settings guidance recommends HDMI 1 or HDMI 2 for its high-refresh Game Accelerator feature and recommends a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K at 120Hz or 144Hz. Confirm those recommendations against your regional P8L manual and the source’s own output specification. A cable cannot create a refresh rate that the console, graphics card, input and TV do not support.
TCL UK advertises a 4K 144Hz signal path and a 288Hz mode when connected to a compatible 288Hz HDMI source. These are manufacturer specifications for the applicable UK configuration, not a guarantee that every size, region, input or game will operate at those rates. A source may output 60Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz or another rate depending on its settings and the game.
3. Do not use movie-style interpolation for games
Leave Motion Clarity and other frame-interpolation effects off unless your particular software documents a compatible low-latency implementation. Interpolation adds processing and can make controls feel less direct. Use the game’s own performance, quality or frame-rate options, then let VRR handle supported fluctuations. If input response is the priority, a clean Game/Game Master path is more important than making a 30-frame-per-second game look artificially smooth.

4. Verify the result at the source
After changing modes, check the console or PC display panel. Confirm HDR is enabled only when the game and display support it, verify the selected resolution and refresh rate, and look for VRR status if the platform reports it. If the source falls back to 60Hz, troubleshoot the input, cable, adapter, graphics setting and game before changing colour or contrast controls.
What the main picture controls actually do
| Control | Practical meaning | Safe approach |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | Overall screen brightness. | Set for room comfort and visibility; avoid using Black Level as a substitute. |
| Contrast | White level. | Keep the chosen mode’s default unless measured calibration identifies clipping. |
| Black Level | Darkness of black areas. | Leave at the mode default; changing it can lift blacks or crush shadow detail. |
| Motion Clarity | Motion compensation to reduce perceived blur or judder. | Off for a natural film baseline; add sparingly for sport if artefacts stay acceptable. |
| Dynamic Tone Mapping | HDR brightness/tone processing, where available. | Evaluate only during HDR playback and keep the choice separate from Dolby Vision. |
| Game Direct Sync | A low-latency control for certain signals. | Use with Game/Game Master when gaming; verify the source still reports its desired mode. |
Accuracy versus visibility: choosing between conflicting goals
When accuracy matters most
Choose Filmmaker Mode or Movie, retain default contrast, colour and Black Level, disable unnecessary dynamic processing and keep Motion Clarity off. This is the strongest general starting point for films, scripted television and reference viewing.
When visibility matters most
For a sunlit room or a sports broadcast, a brighter preset and modest motion compensation may be more useful than strict creator-intent reproduction. Make one change at a time and judge real content. A setting that helps a football pan can be distracting in a film, so separate the modes by input or activity rather than compromising every source.
When response matters most
For gaming, select the low-latency mode first. VRR, ALLM, Game Direct Sync, the correct HDMI input and a suitable cable affect responsiveness and compatibility more directly than extra sharpness or motion processing. Picture-quality tweaks cannot compensate for a source that is limited to a lower refresh rate.
Troubleshooting common problems
“I cannot find HDR or Dolby Vision controls.”
Start HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision content and reopen the picture menu. TCL makes some options conditional on the active signal. Dolby Vision can also lock controls. If the option remains absent, check the app, source output and firmware rather than copying an SDR setting.

“Sport looks like a soap opera or has halos.”
Lower Motion Clarity one step at a time or turn it off. Compare Sports with Movie and inspect high-contrast edges during a pan. Compression noise and poor broadcast cadence can be amplified by motion processing.
“The game feels laggy.”
Confirm Game or Game Master mode, Game Direct Sync or equivalent low-latency processing, ALLM and VRR. Check that the console or PC is connected to the recommended high-refresh HDMI input and that the cable is certified Ultra High Speed for the desired 4K rate. Disable interpolation and verify the source’s resolution and refresh-rate output.
“My menu does not match a guide.”
Check the exact model suffix, screen size, region, input, active signal and firmware. TCL explicitly notes that features and specifications vary. A control shown on a UK 75-inch guide may not appear on a different regional or size configuration.
Why copying numbers from another P8L is risky
No independent measured calibration values covering every P8L size, region and current firmware are established here. The UK guide’s small Motion Clarity suggestion is tied to one 75-inch sample and is expressly not universal. Numeric contrast, colour, gamma or tone-mapping values from a different panel can produce a worse result because panel characteristics, software defaults and signal handling differ.
Unless you have measurement equipment, a known test pattern workflow and the exact same regional model, use the mode defaults and the activity-based choices above. A professional calibration would need to identify the specific screen, input, format and firmware; calling an unmeasured preset “calibrated” would overstate what is known.
Quick Recap
A repeatable setup checklist
- Record the exact P8L size, regional model suffix and firmware.
- Play the actual SDR, HDR10/HDR10+, Dolby Vision, sport or game signal you want to configure.
- Select Filmmaker Mode/Movie for films, Sports or a preferred movie mode for sport, and Game/Game Master for gaming.
- Restore or retain the selected mode’s default Contrast, Colour and Black Level.
- Set overall screen brightness for the room.
- Choose Motion Clarity off for films and games initially; add only a small amount for sport if it visibly helps.
- For gaming, enable compatible VRR, ALLM and Game Direct Sync, then verify the source output.
- Use HDMI 1 or 2 and a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when the applicable regional model and source target 4K 120/144Hz.
- Use Apply All Picture Settings only after deciding whether the same choice should affect every input.
- Save a separate preference for each activity instead of forcing one compromise setting on every source.
