There is no single best picture setting for every LG or Samsung TV: the right starting point depends on room light, your TV model, and what you are watching. For a bright room, try a brighter picture mode and adjust the screen’s light output; for dark-room movies, start with Cinema on LG or Movie on Samsung. Treat these as starting points, not universal calibration values.
Choose a picture mode for the room and content
Start by matching the mode to your viewing conditions, then adjust screen light output for comfort. Manufacturers’ mode names describe broad choices; they do not guarantee the same appearance across different models.

| Situation | LG starting point | Samsung starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Bright room | Vivid for the “Natural Light” context in LG’s US guidance; Standard is another option to try if Vivid looks too intense. | Dynamic for a brighter image in bright viewing environments; Standard is suitable for most viewing environments. |
| Artificial indoor light | Standard, as listed in LG’s US support guidance. | Standard is Samsung’s general-purpose option. |
| Dark-room movies or TV | Cinema, LG’s listed dark-room option. | Movie, which Samsung recommends for TV or movies in a dark room. |
| Movie presentation with fewer picture changes | Not stated in the cited LG guidance. | Filmmaker Mode on supported models; Samsung says it may look darker than other modes. |
These are manufacturer suggestions, not a guarantee of accuracy or a substitute for model-specific calibration. LG notes that room lighting, screen reflectance, TV capabilities, settings, and content all affect the picture. Samsung likewise cautions that settings and features vary by model and year. See LG’s picture-settings guidance and Samsung’s picture-settings guidance.
Adjust screen light output—not every picture slider
If the image is hard to see in daylight or too bright at night, adjust the control that changes the screen’s light output. The label depends on the TV: Samsung calls it Backlight; LG OLED models may use OLED Light or OLED Pixel Brightness, while other LG models may show Backlight. Samsung advises raising Backlight in a particularly bright room and lowering it in a dark room.

Do not confuse that control with Brightness, which Samsung lists separately from Backlight, Contrast, Sharpness, and Color. Menu labels and locations vary by model and year, so look for the light-output control in your set’s Picture settings rather than copying a number from a different TV. LG’s support page includes example values for several modes, but explicitly notes that the visible result depends on the TV and viewing conditions; those examples are not universal settings.
What to try on an LG TV
For daytime viewing
LG’s US support table pairs Vivid with its “Natural Light” context and Standard with “Artificial Light.” Try the mode that makes the image comfortably visible without making color or contrast look unpleasant to you. Adjust your model’s Backlight or OLED light-output control as needed.

For movies at night
Try Cinema in a dark room. If the picture seems too dim, first check the mode and Energy Saving setting rather than raising unrelated controls such as Sharpness or Color.
If the picture is unexpectedly dim
- Open the TV’s Picture settings. The exact menu path varies by webOS version and model.
- Check whether Energy Saving is enabled and review its setting.
- Confirm that the selected picture mode suits the room and content; try another mode if needed.
- If the picture still differs by source, check settings while using that input. LG notes that picture settings may need to be set separately for different inputs.
LG describes Energy Saving or an unsuitable picture mode as common causes of a dim-looking picture. Its dim-picture troubleshooting guidance notes that menu paths differ across webOS generations.

What to try on a Samsung TV
For bright rooms
Try Dynamic if you want a brighter image, or Standard if you prefer a less vivid presentation. In Picture settings, find Backlight and raise it if the room is particularly bright. The control names and menu layout differ across model generations.
For dark-room viewing
Try Movie for TV or films in a dark room. If you want a mode intended to preserve selected presentation choices, try Filmmaker Mode if your TV offers it; Samsung warns that it can look darker than other modes.

For automatic adjustment
Adaptive Picture is available only on supported Samsung models. Samsung describes it as adjusting brightness based on surrounding light and the content being viewed; availability and menu path vary by model generation. Check your TV’s manual or settings rather than assuming the feature is present. Samsung’s Adaptive Picture support page lists examples of supported QLED generations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For games, prioritize the TV’s game mode
If low-latency play is your priority, use the TV’s Game mode when available. Picture modes and controls differ by model, so the movie and room-light suggestions above are not a detailed game-calibration recipe.
When calibration is worth considering
Most viewers can begin by choosing a suitable mode and setting screen light output for the room. If you want a more deliberate adjustment, Samsung says a calibration disc can be used with a Blu-ray player. A disc is optional; check compatibility with your player and the formats you watch before choosing one. The cited guidance does not establish support for every disc, player, or HDR test pattern.
