Best Picture Settings for a New QLED TV: A First-Setup Guide

For a natural starting picture, select Filmmaker Mode if your QLED offers it. Otherwise choose the most accurate movie preset, usually called Movie, Theater, or Professional. Set the color temperature to Warm (Samsung commonly calls the most accurate choice Warm2), adjust light output for your room, keep local dimming enabled, and turn off processing that changes the image. Treat SDR, HDR, Dolby Vision, game consoles, and built-in apps as separate picture states: a setting that is correct for one may not be correct for another.

The numbers below are starting points rather than universal calibration values. QLED models differ in panel, firmware, menu labels, and dimming hardware, and many televisions save settings independently for each HDMI input and for native streaming apps.

Control Recommended starting point Change it when
Picture mode Filmmaker Mode Use Movie, Theater, or Professional if Filmmaker Mode is unavailable.
Color temperature Warm; Warm2 on many Samsung sets Only choose a cooler setting if you deliberately prefer a bluer image.
Backlight or light output Set for the room rather than copying a number Raise it for daylight and lower it for a dark room.
Gamma 2.2 for an average room Try 2.4 or BT.1886 in a dark room, or 2.0 in a bright room.
Local dimming/local contrast Medium or High Reduce it if subtitles or bright objects produce distracting halos.
Dynamic contrast, dynamic brightness, black stretch, excess noise reduction Off Use an individual feature only when a particular source clearly benefits.
Energy saving and ambient-light sensor Off when consistent brightness is the goal Turn them on only if automatic power saving is more important than a stable image.
Color space Auto Override it only with a measured reason or a documented source requirement.
Motion processing Off or at its minimum Add a small amount for sports or live television if you prefer smoother motion.

Prepare the TV before changing picture controls

Let the set and the room settle

Make the first adjustment from your normal viewing position, with the room lit as it usually is when you watch. A showroom preset is intentionally conspicuous: it often pushes brightness, color and edge enhancement so the television stands out under retail lighting. Those choices can look harsh at home and are a poor reference for calibration.

Display a familiar film or television program for several minutes before judging color temperature. A cool preset makes Warm look yellow at first; your eyes normally adapt quickly. Evaluate neutral whites, gray objects and skin tones after that adaptation rather than switching back immediately because the first impression seems amber.

Check each source separately

Picture settings are frequently stored by input and signal type. A console on HDMI 1, a set-top box on HDMI 2, a built-in streaming app and a USB file may each have their own SDR or HDR state. After establishing the baseline, check every input you actually use. If one source looks different, confirm that you are editing the active source and that the television has not switched into an HDR or Dolby Vision mode.

Choose an accurate picture mode

Filmmaker Mode

Filmmaker Mode was created to disable extra picture and motion processing so the image stays close to the creator’s intent. It is the most useful first choice when available because it removes several decisions at once. It does not guarantee that every control is perfect on every model, but it provides a sensible, repeatable foundation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Movie, Theater or Professional

If your model lacks Filmmaker Mode, select the manufacturer’s movie-oriented preset. Names vary, but Movie, Theater and Professional generally prioritize a more accurate white balance and less aggressive processing than Vivid or Dynamic. Read the on-screen description if several options appear; choose the one presented as accurate or intended for a darkened viewing environment.

Why not Vivid or Dynamic?

Vivid and Dynamic modes are designed to attract attention in a store. They commonly raise light output, sharpen edges, exaggerate color and add contrast processing. You can use one as a personal preference, but it should not be the neutral starting point for evaluating the panel or comparing content.

Set color temperature to a neutral white

Choose Warm, or Warm2 on many Samsung televisions. Professional video is normally referenced to a 6500K white point, and the warm option is usually closest to that target. The initial yellow cast is expected when your eyes are accustomed to a cool retail preset. Give the setting a few minutes, then judge whether whites look neutral and whether faces retain believable skin tones.

Do not compensate for a warm white point by increasing the Color control. Color temperature changes the balance of red, green and blue across the image; Color changes saturation. They solve different problems, and moving both at once makes it difficult to identify what helped.

Match light output to the room

Backlight, Brightness and similar labels

Manufacturers use different names for the control that determines panel light output. It may be Backlight, Brightness, Panel Brightness or a related control. Set that control by comfort and visibility: a sunlit room needs more output, while a dark room needs less. There is no single correct number for every room, screen size or viewing distance.

Some models also have a separate Brightness control that affects black level rather than the panel’s lamp intensity. Because labels and behavior vary, do not copy a value from another model. If changing a control makes shadow detail disappear or black areas turn gray, return to the previous value and use the television’s explanation or a test pattern before proceeding.

Gamma choices

Gamma describes how mid-tones are distributed between black and white. Gamma 2.2 is a practical average-room starting point. A dark room can usually use 2.4 or BT.1886 for a deeper, more cinema-like mid-tone curve; a bright room may benefit from 2.0 so shadow detail does not look blocked. Make this choice after setting the room-appropriate light output, because a very bright screen can make an otherwise suitable gamma appear washed out.

Use local dimming without hiding its trade-offs

QLED televisions that include full-array or other local-dimming systems can darken parts of the backlight while keeping bright highlights intense. Leave Local Dimming or Local Contrast enabled. Medium or High is a sensible first range because it generally improves black depth and highlight contrast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local dimming is a compromise, not a free improvement. A bright subtitle, star field or isolated white object can make the surrounding zone glow, commonly called blooming or a halo. If that artifact distracts you more than the raised black level helps, lower the setting one step and reassess from your normal seat. Do not disable the feature automatically; compare a difficult scene with it on and off, since the preferable choice depends on your room, content and sensitivity to halos.

Turn off processing that changes the source

Dynamic contrast, brightness and black stretch

Disable Dynamic Contrast, Dynamic Brightness and Black Stretch for the neutral baseline. These controls alter the image scene by scene, which can crush shadow detail, flatten highlights or make brightness pump during a cut. They may be useful for a very poor broadcast, but they make accurate evaluation harder.

Noise reduction

Leave heavy or automatic noise reduction off unless a visibly noisy, low-quality source needs help. Processing can smear fine texture and film grain along with unwanted noise. If your television offers separate low, medium and high settings, begin with Off and add the smallest amount that solves a demonstrable problem.

Energy-saving features and sensors

Energy Saver and ambient-light sensors can continuously change the picture as the room changes. Turn them off when you want consistent brightness while setting up or comparing modes. Hisense guidance, for example, recommends leaving Energy Saving and the light sensor off for a stable image; TCL’s QLED setup guidance likewise disables Energy Saver. You can re-enable a sensor later if automatic power reduction is your priority.

Set up SDR content first

Use a normal high-definition or 4K stream that is identified as SDR. Select your movie-oriented mode, set Warm/Warm2, choose the room-appropriate light output and gamma, enable local dimming, and remove the processing listed above. Watch a scene containing faces, white clothing, dark interiors and fine texture. Adjust only one control at a time and wait through several shots before deciding whether the change is beneficial.

Do not chase maximum brightness in SDR. A brighter image can look impressive for a moment while clipping clouds, bleaching faces and tiring your eyes. If the picture is comfortable, shadow detail is visible and whites do not dominate the scene, the baseline is doing its job.

Treat HDR and Dolby Vision as separate states

When HDR begins, many televisions switch to a different picture state and expose different controls. Do not paste SDR values into HDR or assume that an SDR backlight level should remain unchanged. Confirm that the program is actually flagged as HDR or Dolby Vision, then make adjustments while that signal is active.

What model examples show

On the Samsung QN95C, HDR raises Brightness to its maximum and the Movie HDR mode follows the PQ curve accurately. On the TCL QM851G, HDR raises Brightness to 100 and Color Space should remain Auto. These are model-specific examples, not universal numbers for every QLED. They illustrate why the HDR screen can legitimately show different values from the SDR screen.

Dolby Vision may provide its own Dolby Vision Bright, Dark or equivalent choices. Select the option that suits your room, then avoid changing unrelated SDR controls while Dolby Vision is active. If the television keeps switching unexpectedly, verify the source device’s HDR output setting and the active HDMI input before changing picture values.

Leave Color Space on Auto

Color Space set to Auto lets the television choose the gamut that matches the incoming signal. This is the correct first choice for SDR, HDR and console sources. A manual Wide, Native or similar option can oversaturate standard-gamut content when the source is not asking for it. Override Auto only when you have a measured calibration reason or a source-specific instruction; otherwise, a wrong manual gamut can make every color look vivid but inaccurate.

Configure motion for films, television and sports

Film and scripted programs

For a film-like presentation, turn motion interpolation off or use its minimum setting. Interpolation invents frames between the real frames and can create the soap-opera effect, especially around camera pans and actors moving against detailed backgrounds.

Samsung documents a useful neutral option under Picture Clarity Custom: Blur Reduction 0 and Judder Reduction 0. This removes the television’s added motion smoothing while preserving the source cadence. Menu names differ elsewhere, so look for De-judder, De-blur, Motion Smoothing or a similar control and set it to Off or its lowest value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TCL motion controls

TCL notes that enabling Motion Clarity and increasing De-judder increases the soap-opera effect. Clear LED Motion can reduce persistence blur, but it significantly lowers peak brightness. Leave both features off for the first setup unless you have a specific reason to trade brightness for motion clarity.

Sports and live television

Sports viewers often prefer a small amount of interpolation because a ball or camera pan appears smoother. Add it after the accurate baseline is established, using the lowest setting that looks natural. Check faces, scoreboard text and the edges of players; excessive processing can produce trails or warped outlines even when the overall motion seems fluid.

Prepare a console or other HDR device

Enable the enhanced HDMI mode

Use the input’s enhanced-bandwidth setting before connecting a console or high-bandwidth HDR source. Samsung calls this Input Signal Plus. TCL uses an HDMI Mode set to Auto or HDMI 2.1, and Hisense guides describe changing the input from Standard to Enhanced. The exact label varies, but the purpose is the same: expose the resolution, refresh-rate, HDR, variable-refresh-rate and eARC features that both the television and source support.

Turn on Game Mode when latency matters

Game Mode reduces processing that would otherwise delay controller input. Enable it for the HDMI input used for a console or gaming PC when responsiveness is more important than the extra processing in a cinema preset. Recheck the picture after enabling it because some televisions maintain a separate Game picture profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an appropriate HDMI cable

An Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable is the most direct physical choice for a source that needs the bandwidth associated with 4K at high refresh rates, VRR or eARC. Match the cable and source to the television’s documented capabilities. A cable cannot add 4K, 120 Hz, VRR or eARC support that the panel or source does not provide, and a lower-capability source will not gain features merely from a newer cable.

Verify the result on the console

After enabling the TV option, open the console’s video information screen and confirm the output you intend to use. If HDR, high refresh rate or VRR is unavailable, check the TV’s enhanced setting, the cable connection and the limitations of that particular HDMI port before changing picture controls.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Streaming apps and HDMI devices need their own check

Start a known SDR title in the built-in app, note the picture mode and light output, then start a known HDR or Dolby Vision title and confirm that the television changes to the corresponding state. Repeat the same check for a set-top box, disc player and console. A setting that looks correct in a native app may not carry over to an HDMI source, and vice versa.

If one input is unexpectedly dim or oversaturated, first identify the signal type shown by the TV’s information panel. Then check whether Energy Saver, a light sensor, enhanced HDMI mode or a source-side HDR setting is responsible. This approach avoids trying to correct a signal-format problem with color or brightness controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional calibration with test patterns

Basic setup does not require professional equipment. True calibration, including precise grayscale and color-management work, requires specialized measurement instruments. If you want to verify black level, contrast and clipping at home, the AVS HD 709 calibration-pattern package can be displayed through HDMI or USB. It is optional and most useful after the first-pass setup, when you already know which source and picture state you are adjusting.

Use patterns to confirm that near-black detail remains visible without turning black gray and that bright whites retain texture. Do not adjust by memory of another television or by copying model-specific values from a review: panel variation, room light and firmware can make the same number produce a different result.

Troubleshoot the most common first-day problems

Symptom Likely check Practical response
The image looks yellow after selecting Warm Your eyes are adapted to a cool preset. Watch for several minutes, then judge neutral whites and skin tones before changing temperature.
The picture is too dim in daylight Room light, gamma or an energy-saving feature. Raise the room-appropriate light output, consider gamma 2.0, and confirm Energy Saver and the light sensor are off.
Dark scenes show halos around subtitles Local dimming is too aggressive for the scene. Reduce Local Dimming or Local Contrast from High to Medium and compare again.
Films look like live video De-judder or other interpolation is active. Turn motion processing off; on Samsung, use Picture Clarity Custom with Blur Reduction 0 and Judder Reduction 0.
HDR looks washed out or has unexpected controls The TV is in a different HDR state or the HDMI input is not enhanced. Confirm the signal is HDR, use Color Space Auto, and enable the model’s enhanced HDMI option.
A console cannot select its expected resolution or refresh rate Port bandwidth, cable, source or TV capability. Enable Input Signal Plus, HDMI Mode Auto/HDMI 2.1 or Enhanced as applicable; then verify the cable, port and source limits.
Brightness changes during viewing Energy Saver or an ambient-light sensor. Disable those features while setting up a consistent picture.
One app looks different from another Separate saved picture states or different SDR/HDR formats. Adjust the active app or input while its actual program signal is on screen.

A practical order for fine-tuning

  1. Select the mode: Filmmaker Mode, or Movie, Theater or Professional.
  2. Set white balance by eye: choose Warm or Warm2 and allow time for adaptation.
  3. Set light output: match Backlight or its equivalent to the room, not to an online number.
  4. Choose gamma: begin at 2.2, then use 2.4/BT.1886 for a dark room or 2.0 for a bright one if needed.
  5. Enable local dimming: start at Medium or High and lower it only when halos are distracting.
  6. Remove processing: disable dynamic contrast, dynamic brightness, black stretch and unnecessary noise reduction.
  7. Stabilize brightness: turn off Energy Saver and the light sensor while evaluating the picture.
  8. Set motion: keep interpolation off for films; add the smallest amount you prefer for sports.
  9. Check signal states: repeat the process for SDR, HDR, Dolby Vision, every HDMI input and native apps.
  10. Configure gaming: enable the input’s enhanced HDMI option and Game Mode, then verify the console’s reported capabilities.

What to change for different viewing priorities

Priority Keep Optional adjustment
Accurate movies in a dim room Filmmaker or Movie, Warm/Warm2, gamma 2.4 or BT.1886, local dimming enabled, motion off Lower light output until bright scenes are comfortable.
Mixed daytime television Movie-oriented mode, Warm/Warm2, gamma 2.2, local dimming enabled Use gamma 2.0 or more light output if shadows are hard to see.
Bright-room sports Accurate mode, room-appropriate light output, local dimming enabled Add modest motion interpolation; watch for trails and the soap-opera effect.
Console gaming Game Mode, enhanced HDMI input, Color Space Auto Use an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable when the source and TV require that bandwidth.
HDR movies The TV’s HDR state, Color Space Auto, local dimming enabled Adjust only while HDR is active; do not reuse SDR values blindly.

Model and firmware differences matter

Exact menu names, available ranges and automatic behavior vary by brand, model, firmware version, panel type and room. A setting demonstrated on a Samsung QN95C or TCL QM851G is not a universal calibration recipe, and guidance written for one Hisense model may use different labels on another. Treat model-specific values as reference points, not instructions to copy one for one.

When a control is missing, greyed out or behaves differently, identify the active signal and picture mode first. Some options appear only for HDR, only in Game Mode or only after the HDMI input is switched to its enhanced setting. Keeping a short note of the final values for each input makes it easier to restore them after a reset or a firmware change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The finished baseline

A properly configured first setup should show natural skin tones, neutral whites, visible shadow detail, controlled highlights and motion that matches your preference without obvious processing artifacts. Begin with the accurate baseline, change one control at a time, and preserve separate settings for SDR, HDR, Dolby Vision and gaming. That method is more reliable than chasing a universal number because it accounts for the variables that actually change the picture: room light, signal format, source device and the QLED model itself.
