The best Picross or nonogram game depends on the kind of puzzle experience you want. On Nintendo Switch, PICROSS S9 is the most complete conventional package, with 485 puzzles and several established modes. Depixtion is the standout if you want a genuine change to the usual monochrome grid: its three puzzle layers combine into a final color image. Picross: Juufuutei Raden’s Guide for Pixel Museum suits players who want a themed, voiced presentation and large puzzle sizes. On PC, Steam has a broad and changing catalog, including Picross Touch, Pictopix and Pepper’s Puzzles, but each listing must be checked for current price, availability and requirements.
These are feature-based recommendations from official storefront descriptions, not a ranking based on personal playtesting or review scores.

What Picross and nonograms are
Picross and nonograms are picture-logic puzzles. A rectangular grid has number clues at the ends of its rows and columns. Those numbers tell you how many consecutive cells in each line must be filled, and multiple numbers indicate separate filled runs with at least one blank cell between them. Solving the intersecting clues gradually reveals a pixel-style picture.
The same basic puzzle appears under several names, including Hanjie, Pic-a-Pix, Paint by Numbers and Griddlers. “Picross” is strongly associated with Nintendo’s presentation, while “nonogram” is the broader puzzle term used by many games and books. The rules remain recognizable even when a game adds colors, layers, themes, tutorials or assist tools.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A useful way to evaluate a game is to separate the underlying logic from its presentation. Two titles can use identical row-and-column deduction while feeling very different because one offers hundreds of small puzzles, another uses large grids, and another changes the objective with color layers.
At-a-glance comparison

| Steam Picross listings | PC | Varies by individual title | Search catalog includes free and paid entries such as Picross Touch, Pictopix and Pepper’s Puzzles | Players who prefer a computer and want the widest storefront selection |
The puzzle totals in the table are publisher-attributed figures shown in Nintendo listings: 485 for PICROSS S9 in 2023, 300 for Depixtion in 2020, and more than 300 for Raden’s title in its 2025 listing. Steam’s search page is a changing catalog rather than a quality ranking, so it does not establish a single total, price or availability period for PC games.
Best conventional package: PICROSS S9
PICROSS S9 is the clearest choice when you want the traditional Picross format plus several official variations in one Switch release. Nintendo’s 2023 listing reports 485 puzzles, giving it the largest explicitly documented puzzle count among the three Switch examples here.

Modes included
- Classic Picross: the standard row-and-column picture logic format.
- Mega Picross: a mode built around larger clue values and a more demanding deduction pattern.
- Color Picross: introduces color into the solving process rather than limiting the board to one filled state.
- Clip Picross: presents puzzles as parts of a larger collection to complete.
- Extra puzzles: additional boards beyond the main mode set.
The listing also documents both touch and button controls. That matters if you switch between handheld play and a television, or if selecting cells with a controller is more comfortable than tapping a screen. Assist functions are included for players who want help while learning or who prefer a less punishing session. Local play supports up to four people, making this the only option in the documented Switch examples with an explicitly stated same-console multiplayer feature.
Who should choose it
Choose PICROSS S9 if your priority is breadth within the established Picross formula: many puzzles, multiple rule sets, two input styles, assistance and local group play. It is also the safest starting point for someone who specifically wants “a Picross game” rather than an experimental spin on nonograms.
The listing does not establish a price that remains valid across regions or dates, and the 485 figure is not a promise that every future edition or storefront listing will contain the same content. Check the current Nintendo product page for the territory where you intend to buy.

Best mechanical twist: Depixtion
Depixtion is the strongest documented alternative when ordinary black-and-white nonograms feel too familiar. Nintendo’s 2020 listing describes three puzzle layers that blend into a final image. Instead of treating the completed grid as a single flat picture, you solve related layers whose combination produces the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat makes its puzzles different
The three-layer structure changes how you read progress. A partly completed layer may not look meaningful on its own, while the combined image becomes clearer as the layers are solved. This is still a logic puzzle: the listing says the hand-crafted boards are intended to be solvable through deduction rather than guesswork.
Board sizes range from 4×4 through 24×24. The smaller end is useful for short sessions or for introducing the rules; the larger boards provide more room for chained deductions. Nintendo lists 300 nonogram puzzles for the 2020 release.
Learning and convenience features
- Tutorials: instruction is provided for both beginners and advanced players.
- Autosaving: progress is saved automatically, so a partially solved board does not require a manual save routine.
- Hand-crafted puzzles: the listing presents the boards as deliberately designed rather than randomly generated.
Pick Depixtion when the central question is not “How many standard Picross boards can I get?” but “What nonogram mechanic will make the next puzzle feel new?” Its color-layer approach is the clearest documented distinction in this group.
Best themed presentation: Picross: Juufuutei Raden’s Guide for Pixel Museum
Picross: Juufuutei Raden’s Guide for Pixel Museum combines nonogram solving with a museum and pixel-art setting. Nintendo’s US listing gives a release date of June 5, 2025, lists more than 300 puzzles and supports sizes from 5×5 to 40×30.
Why the theme matters
A themed wrapper can make a long puzzle collection feel like a guided exhibit instead of an anonymous sequence of grids. This title includes voiced commentary, so the presentation is not limited to static menus and completed pictures. The museum framing is the reason to select it over a purely utilitarian puzzle collection.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Difficulty range and onboarding
The documented size range runs from compact 5×5 boards to wide 40×30 layouts. Smaller boards are less intimidating when learning clue notation; a 40×30 puzzle demands more sustained attention and careful marking. The listing also promises a detailed tutorial and says beginners can enjoy the puzzles, so new players do not have to arrive with prior Picross experience.
The listing does not state a precise puzzle total beyond “over 300,” nor does it document multiplayer, assist functions or a specific control scheme in the supplied description. Treat those details as unknown rather than assuming they match another Picross release.
Best route to PC: use Steam as a catalog, not a ranking
PC players have the broadest choice through Steam’s Picross search results. The catalog includes free and paid listings such as Picross Touch, Pictopix and Pepper’s Puzzles, along with many other entries. Because the search page changes, it is useful for discovery but not a permanent authority on price, availability or quality.
How to evaluate a Steam listing
- Open the individual product page. Do not infer the current price or whether a title is still sold from an older search result.
- Confirm operating-system support and hardware requirements. The search results do not establish that every listed game runs on every PC configuration.
- Read the feature list for puzzle dimensions, colors, hints and input methods. “Picross” in the title does not guarantee the same modes as a Nintendo release.
- Check the current availability in your region. Store prices, currencies and product status can differ by territory and can change over time.
- Inspect the interface screenshots or description for the concerns that matter to you. Look specifically for timers, advertising, undo or error feedback, and keyboard or mouse support if those affect your decision.
This process is more reliable than treating a community list or a storefront search order as a recommendation. It also lets you distinguish a free-to-play entry from a one-time purchase without assuming that either model is automatically better.
Choosing by the feature you care about
If you want the most modes in one Switch game
Start with PICROSS S9. Its documented combination of Classic, Mega, Color, Clip and Extra puzzles gives you several rule sets without changing software. The same listing also covers touch and button input, assist functions and four-player local play.
If you want color to change the logic
Choose Depixtion. Its three layers are not merely a visual skin; they are the defining structure of the puzzle. The 4×4-to-24×24 range and tutorials let you begin with smaller boards before attempting larger ones.

If atmosphere and commentary matter
Choose Raden’s Pixel Museum guide. The museum theme, pixel-art presentation and voiced commentary provide context around the grids, while the 5×5-to-40×30 range includes both compact and expansive boards.

If you are buying for a group
PICROSS S9 is the only game in this comparison whose listing explicitly states local play for up to four people. The other descriptions do not establish multiplayer support, so do not assume that a shared-console mode exists.
How to solve a nonogram without guessing
The same deduction habits transfer between Picross games, even when a title adds colors or multiple layers.
- Read the clue runs. A clue such as 5 means one uninterrupted run of five filled cells. A sequence such as 2, 1 means a run of two and a separate run of one, with at least one blank cell between them.
- Start with the most constrained lines. A clue whose minimum required length nearly fills the row or column has fewer possible placements than a short clue in a large line.
- Mark confirmed blanks. Empty cells are evidence. Recording them prevents you from accidentally joining two runs that must remain separate.
- Use intersections. A filled cell forced by a row can constrain its column, and a forced blank in the column can eliminate placements in the row.
- Re-scan after every deduction. New information often turns a previously ambiguous line into a forced placement.
- Use assists deliberately. In a game that offers assistance, decide whether you want a hint, error checking or another aid before relying on it. Assistance can teach the pattern, but solving unaided may be preferable if you are measuring your own deduction.
Color and layered variants require one extra discipline: keep track of which layer or color a clue belongs to. A visually plausible mark is not necessarily logically valid if it is assigned to the wrong layer.

A Steam Community player asking for “similarly player-friendly nonogram games” specifically mentions timers, advertisements, awkward controls and a lack of helpful feedback or tools. That post is useful because it expresses concrete buying concerns, but one discussion cannot show how widespread any of those problems are or prove that a particular title solves them.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Use those concerns as a personal checklist:
- Timers: determine whether a clock is mandatory, optional or absent if you prefer relaxed deduction.
- Advertising: check whether a free title displays ads during play or only uses a storefront purchase model.
- Input: look for keyboard, mouse, controller or touch support that matches your device.
- Feedback: identify whether the game offers error checking, hints, undo, progress indicators or tutorials.
- Accessibility: check text size, color differentiation and whether important information is conveyed by more than color alone.
The official descriptions supplied for PICROSS S9, Depixtion and Raden’s title establish some tutorials, assists or controls, but they do not provide a complete accessibility audit. Verify the current product information and, where possible, screenshots before purchase.
Community suggestions: useful leads, not verified verdicts
The same Steam discussion mentions Logiart Grimoire, Pixel Puzzle Collection, Pictopix, Pepper’s Puzzles and other suggestions. These names show the range of terms players use when searching for nonograms, but the discussion is not an independent test and does not establish current platform support, price or feature quality for each title.
If one of those games interests you, apply the same Steam checks: open its live page, confirm the current listing and requirements, and look for the exact controls and assistance you need. Do not treat a single commenter’s preference as a universal ranking.

Prices, regions and changing storefront information
Digital prices and regional availability are volatile. A Steam search result can change after a sale, a publisher update or a regional storefront adjustment. Nintendo listings can also differ by territory and edition. For that reason, this guide uses documented puzzle counts and features but does not quote a universal purchase price.
Before buying, verify:
- the storefront region and currency;
- whether the listed edition is the complete game or an add-on;
- the supported platform and required system version;
- the current product status and release date shown for your region;
- refund or sharing rules that apply to your account.
These checks are especially important for PC because the search catalog is explicitly broad and changeable. A title that appears in a search result today may have a different price or availability when you return.
Can a printed nonogram book replace a digital game?
A nonogram puzzle book is a practical screen-free extension of the same row-and-column logic. It can be useful if you want to solve away from a console or computer, but a book is not a digital game: it will not provide autosaving, automatic error checking, voiced commentary, color-layer presentation or controller input.
The available evidence supports the general puzzle format, not a specific book, edition or retailer listing. If you choose print, check the publisher’s sample pages, grid sizes and answer format before ordering so the notation matches your preferred difficulty.
Bottom line by player type

For a familiar, all-in-one Switch experience, begin with PICROSS S9. For a structural twist, select Depixtion. For a museum-style presentation, select Raden’s guide. If your priority is playing on PC, use Steam’s catalog and make the final decision from the individual product page rather than from search order or an isolated community comment.
