There is no evidence-based single “best” photography course in South Africa. The right choice depends on whether you want introductory training, a diploma-level qualification or postgraduate study—and on the current curriculum, practical access, location and cost. Official South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) records identify five options across those study stages; use them as a shortlist, then confirm current details with each provider.
Photography courses in South Africa at a glance
The qualifications below are different in level and purpose, so they are not interchangeable. NQF levels and credits describe the qualification; they do not establish which course is best for a particular student.

Higher Certificate: an introductory route
The three listed Higher Certificates are at NQF Level 5 and carry 120 credits. Their official descriptions point to different emphases: The Open Window includes videography; Oakfields describes varied contexts such as fashion photography and photojournalism; and Stadio lists practical, technical, digital and research-related modules. Compare the current course outlines rather than assuming that qualifications at the same level have identical content.

Diploma: a larger qualification
CPUT’s Diploma in Photography is a 360-credit, NQF Level 6 qualification. It is a different study commitment from a 120-credit Higher Certificate. Ask CPUT about the current duration, curriculum, admissions criteria and campus requirements before deciding whether it suits your plans.
Honours: postgraduate study
DUT’s Bachelor of Applied Arts Honours in Photography is an NQF Level 8 qualification. It is intended as an advanced study option, not a beginner’s substitute for an introductory certificate. Confirm the entry requirements and current programme details with DUT.
How to compare courses before applying
- Match the level to your experience and goal. Start by deciding whether you need an introduction, a diploma-level qualification or postgraduate study. Ask each provider to confirm entry requirements for the intake you are considering.
- Request the current curriculum. Compare module lists against the work you want to pursue. The SAQA descriptions mention videography, fashion photography, photojournalism, practical and digital photography, and postgraduate coursework, but do not provide a complete current curriculum for every option.
- Verify both the qualification and provider. Check the exact qualification record, the institution’s current registration and accreditation, and whether the named course is open for your intended intake. The Department of Higher Education and Training’s register dated 8 May 2026 includes photography offerings as well as cancellation or phase-out notices for institutions, making a current status check important: DHET register of private higher education institutions.
- Ask what practical learning includes. Find out how much studio and fieldwork time is provided, whether equipment is available, how feedback is given, and whether portfolio development is part of the course. The cited records do not compare facilities, class sizes or instructor feedback across providers.
- Get the full cost and logistics in writing. Request current tuition and any additional charges, including possible software, printing or equipment costs. Check schedule, campus, travel and delivery mode. The cited sources do not provide comparable current fees or delivery details.
Do photography students need to buy a camera?
A digital camera may be useful for practical photography study, but the cited course records do not say that students must own one or specify a required model. Ask the provider for its equipment list before buying anything; requirements and equipment access may differ between programmes.
