Best overall for charging control: Google Pixel and ASUS provide the clearest documented charge-limit choices. Samsung is the strongest all-rounder if you also want configurable Power saving and per-game performance settings. Sony offers a straightforward 80% or 90% cap, while iPhone combines Charge Limit with Optimised Battery Charging. OnePlus documents similar controls on the older Nord N20 5G, so verify support on any current model before buying.
What to compare before you buy
“Battery management” covers several different controls. A hard charge cap stops charging at a selected percentage. Adaptive or scheduled charging delays the final part of a charge so the phone reaches full capacity near your normal wake time. Power-saving modes reduce background activity or other features, and performance modes prioritize speed at the cost of additional power use and heat. A phone can be excellent at one of these and limited at another.

The right choice depends on the trade-off you will actually accept. A permanent 80% cap leaves less runtime available each day but reduces the amount of time the battery spends near a high state of charge. Adaptive or scheduled charging preserves a full charge when you need it, but does not keep the battery at 80% all the time. Performance modes can make games or demanding apps more responsive while using more energy.

Google Pixel: the clearest 80% option
Limit to 80%
Google’s Pixel help identifies a Limit to 80% setting and describes it as prioritizing long-term battery health. When enabled, the phone stops normal charging at 80% instead of filling to 100%. That is a deliberate daily-runtime trade: you give up the last 20 percentage points in exchange for spending less time at a high charge level.

Automatic limits and Extreme Charging Mode
Pixel phones can also limit charging automatically to about 70%–80% under certain conditions, according to Google’s battery-help documentation. The phone may do this when its charging and temperature conditions make a temporary limit more appropriate. Google also documents Extreme Charging Mode, which turns off when the phone reaches a high charge level or when it is disconnected. Treat that behavior as protective automation, not as a guaranteed replacement for the selectable 80% limit.
Who should choose Pixel
Pixel is a strong fit if your first question is “Can I stop charging at 80%?” and you prefer a plainly named control. It is less suitable if you require a documented, system-wide high-performance switch; the cited Pixel material establishes charging controls, not a comparable user-facing performance profile.
ASUS: the most granular charging menu
Battery Care modes
ASUS groups its controls under Battery Care and documents three choices:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Steady charging uses a lower charging rate to reduce stress during charging.
- Scheduled charging follows a timing plan, delaying the final portion until the period you specify.
- Charging limit caps the maximum charge instead of targeting 100% every time.
ASUS explains that lower-rate charging can help prevent battery aging. The practical distinction is important: Steady charging changes how quickly energy is delivered, Scheduled charging changes when the final charge occurs, and Charging limit changes the maximum level reached.
When ASUS is the better choice
Choose ASUS when you want to switch between a fixed cap and a schedule rather than relying on one behavior year-round. Scheduled charging is useful if the phone normally stays plugged in overnight and you want a full battery near a predictable departure time. A fixed limit is more consistent when preserving daily headroom matters more than starting every morning at 100%.

Samsung Galaxy: broadest mix of battery and performance controls
Battery protection and an 80% maximum
Samsung documentation describes several battery-protection options, including a mode that limits maximum charge to 80%. Samsung’s naming and the number of available choices vary by Galaxy model and software build, so look for the battery-protection screen on the exact device you plan to buy rather than assuming every Galaxy exposes the same menu.
Power saving that you can configure
Samsung also lets users choose which features Power saving limits. Instead of treating power saving as a single opaque switch, you can review the restrictions presented by your phone and decide which trade-offs are acceptable. Depending on the model, these can affect background behavior and other power-hungry activity. The important advantage is transparency: you can see what the mode is intended to limit and adjust your usage around those limits.
Per-game performance choices
Samsung documentation says some games can be set to high performance or battery saving. That is more targeted than a single system-wide profile: demanding games can receive a performance-oriented setting while less important titles use a battery-saving choice. Performance priority increases power use and can increase heat, so use it for sessions where frame rate or responsiveness matters.
Who should choose Samsung
Samsung is the best match for buyers who want both charging protection and controls over how saving or performance is applied. It offers the widest documented range in this group, but it also requires the most model-specific checking because menus and per-game support are not uniform across the Galaxy line.
Sony Xperia: simple 80% or 90% charging limits
Battery Care Always mode
Sony support documents a Battery Care Always mode in which you choose an 80% or 90% charging limit. This is a straightforward hard-cap choice: select 80% when battery preservation is the priority, or 90% when you need more daily runtime but still want to avoid a full 100% charge.

Why the two-level choice matters
A 90% option can be a useful compromise for people who regularly need more capacity than an 80% cap provides. It is still a setting, not a measured promise of extra battery years. Sony’s documentation does not publish an independent longevity figure for either limit, so evaluate the feature by the control it gives you rather than by an unverified lifespan claim.
iPhone: Charge Limit plus Optimised Battery Charging
Two different approaches under Battery Health & Charging
Apple’s support article documents Charge Limit and Optimised Battery Charging under Battery Health & Charging. Charge Limit is the direct-cap approach: the phone stops at the selected limit rather than routinely charging to 100%. Optimised Battery Charging is adaptive: it reduces the time the iPhone remains fully charged by delaying the last part of charging until it predicts you will need the phone.
Check the iOS version
The cited Apple page is dated December 12, 2025. Apple can change labels and placement as iOS versions evolve, so confirm the wording shown on the buyer’s iPhone before relying on a particular menu path. The presence of these controls does not establish a user-selectable high-performance mode comparable to Samsung’s game settings.
OnePlus: useful pattern, but verify current-model support
What the Nord N20 5G manual documents
The cited OnePlus Nord N20 5G manual documents High performance mode and Optimized night charging, along with battery-usage details. High performance prioritizes speed and can consume more power. Optimized night charging follows the adaptive approach of delaying the final part of a long overnight charge.
Why this evidence is model-specific
The manual is for an older Nord N20 5G. It demonstrates that OnePlus has used this control pattern, but it does not prove that every current OnePlus model includes the same switches, uses the same names, or offers a hard 80% cap. Treat OnePlus as a verify-before-buy option: check the exact model’s current manual or on-device settings.

Hard caps versus adaptive and scheduled charging
Choose a hard cap when consistency matters
A hard cap is predictable. If you select 80%, the phone aims to stop there every charging cycle. This works well for desk workers, drivers, or anyone who usually has access to a charger and wants to avoid routinely reaching 100%. The cost is permanent loss of the final portion of available capacity for that day.
Choose adaptive charging when you need a full battery sometimes
Adaptive or optimized charging is better when your schedule changes or you need maximum runtime in the morning. The phone can remain connected while delaying the final charge. Because the behavior depends on learned usage or a schedule, it may not finish at the expected time if your routine changes or the feature lacks enough information.
Choose scheduled charging when your routine is stable
Scheduled charging is explicit: you provide a time window, and the phone targets completion near that schedule. ASUS documents this as a Battery Care choice. It is useful for predictable overnight charging, but remember to revise the schedule when work hours, travel, or wake time changes.
How to set up these controls safely
- Identify the exact device. Record the model, carrier or regional edition, and installed operating-system version. Battery menus can differ even within one phone family.
- Open Settings and search for the documented label. Search for “Limit to 80%,” “Battery Care,” “Battery protection,” “Charge Limit,” “Optimised Battery Charging,” “Power saving,” or “High performance.” Using the label is safer than following a generic path that may not match your software.
- Pick one charging strategy first. Select a hard limit, an adaptive option, or a schedule. Do not assume that enabling several similarly named options produces a predictable result; read the explanatory text shown by the phone.
- Review the resulting behavior. After the next charge, check whether the phone stopped at the selected percentage or delayed the final portion. If the result differs, verify that the setting is supported on your model and that a schedule or temporary protection mode is not active.
- Configure saving or performance separately. On Samsung, review which restrictions Power saving applies and set individual games to high performance or battery saving where offered. On a Nord N20 5G, the manual’s High performance mode is separate from Optimized night charging.
- Change the setting for exceptional days. Before travel or a long day away from a charger, temporarily choose a higher limit or allow a full charge if your phone supports that option. Restore your preferred protection setting afterward.
Performance modes: what you gain and what you spend
Performance controls are not battery-health controls. A high-performance profile can improve responsiveness in demanding games or apps, but it raises power draw and may produce more heat. Heat and sustained high power use can shorten a session, so the setting is best treated as a task-specific tool rather than a permanent default.
Battery-saving modes make the opposite trade. They can restrict background activity or other features to extend runtime, but delayed notifications, slower synchronization, or reduced visual performance may follow. Samsung’s configurable Power saving controls are valuable because you can inspect those restrictions instead of accepting an unexplained bundle.

Most of the documented phones do not have a cited, user-selectable system-wide performance profile. Do not infer that a charging limit implies a performance switch, or that a gaming mode controls charging. They are separate features and should be evaluated independently.
Common mistakes and fixes
Expecting an 80% cap to add a guaranteed number of years
The official pages cited for these phones publish settings, not independent battery-longevity statistics. An 80% or 90% limit can reduce time spent at a high state of charge, but no specific number of extra years is established here.
Assuming every model in a product family has the same menu
Carrier editions, regions, chipsets, and software builds can change availability. Confirm the exact model before purchase and check its current settings after updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfusing a temporary automatic limit with your chosen cap
Pixel may automatically limit charging to about 70%–80% under certain conditions, and Extreme Charging Mode can turn off after reaching a high level or when disconnected. A temporary behavior is not necessarily the same as a permanent 80% preference.
Leaving high performance enabled all day
Use high-performance settings for demanding games or short workloads. Return to the standard or saving profile when the task is finished to avoid unnecessary power use and heat.
Relying on an old manual for a new phone
The OnePlus evidence comes from the Nord N20 5G manual. Use it as an example of available controls on that model, not as confirmation for a newer OnePlus device.
Which phone fits your priority?
| Your priority | Best-documented fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A clearly named 80% cap | Google Pixel | Pixel help explicitly documents “Limit to 80%” and explains its battery-health intent |
| Several charging strategies in one menu | ASUS | Battery Care offers Steady charging, Scheduled charging, and Charging limit |
| Charging protection plus configurable saving and gaming controls | Samsung Galaxy | Samsung documents an 80% protection option, configurable Power saving limits, and per-game performance choices |
| A choice between 80% and 90% | Sony Xperia | Battery Care Always provides both limits |
| Hard limit or adaptive charging on iPhone | iPhone | Charge Limit and Optimised Battery Charging address the two main charging strategies |
| High-performance and overnight optimization on a documented older model | OnePlus Nord N20 5G | The manual documents both controls, but current-model support must be checked |
Bottom line
Buy the phone whose control matches your routine, not the one with the longest feature list. Pick Pixel for a plainly documented 80% limit, ASUS for the deepest charging-mode choice, Samsung for the broadest combination of charging, saving, and game-performance controls, Sony for an uncomplicated 80% or 90% cap, and iPhone for Charge Limit plus adaptive charging. Consider OnePlus only after confirming the exact model’s current software supports the controls you need. None of these settings guarantees a particular battery lifespan; they are tools for managing charging, runtime, heat, and performance according to your priorities.
