In September 2026, Stuff names the iPhone 17 its best overall choice and the Google Pixel 10 its Android all-rounder, while TechRadar’s recently refreshed US guide puts the new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at the top. Those are different publications’ recommendations, not a shared ranking. The right pick depends on your budget, preferred platform, camera needs, and whether you want a compact phone or a large-screen specialist.
Best phones by what you need
| Need | Pick | Why it stands out | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced everyday phone | Apple iPhone 17 | Stuff’s overall pick, with strong performance, a 120Hz OLED screen, and camera upgrades. | No telephoto camera; USB 2.0 data speeds. [Stuff] |
| Premium iPhone camera and performance | Apple iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max | TechRadar’s top-ranked US picks, featuring the A20 Pro chip and a three-camera system with variable aperture on the main camera. | Premium-priced, with a price increase and limited design changes noted by TechRadar. [TechRadar] |
| Android all-rounder | Google Pixel 10 | Stuff highlights its 6.3-inch 120Hz display and three rear cameras, including a telephoto camera, at a lower price than Pro models. | 128GB base storage may feel tight; wireless charging is slower than on the Pro models. [Stuff] |
| Lower-cost phone | Google Pixel 10a | TechRadar positions it as a sub-$500 option, with a 6.3-inch display, Tensor G4 processor, 5,100 mAh battery, and seven years of OS and security updates. | TechRadar found everyday use fine, but demanding image editing or summarization can feel sluggish. Its battery test recorded 15 hours 16 minutes in 2026; that is a publication lab result, not a guaranteed runtime. [TechRadar] |
| Large-screen Android power user | Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra | A 6.9-inch flagship with advanced cameras and high performance; Stuff also points to its integrated S Pen and Privacy Display. | Its size and premium price make it a better fit for people who will use the large screen and specialist features. Tom’s Guide recorded 16 hours 10 minutes in its 2026 battery test; results vary with use. [Stuff] [Tom’s Guide] |
| Gaming and long battery life | Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro | Tom’s Guide recorded 20 hours 34 minutes in its 2026 battery test, the standout result among these listed figures. | It is gaming-oriented; Tom’s Guide flags camera trade-offs, high cost relative to newer phones, and limited remaining software support. The test result is not a real-world guarantee. [Tom’s Guide] |
Which phone is the best overall?
If you want a balanced phone without a specific specialist requirement, Stuff’s September 2026 guide names the iPhone 17 its best overall pick. It pairs strong performance with a 120Hz OLED display and camera upgrades. Its omissions matter, though: you do not get a telephoto camera, and data transfers use USB 2.0 speeds. [Stuff]

That is not a universal verdict. TechRadar’s recently refreshed US guide ranks the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at the top, emphasizing their A20 Pro chip and three-camera system with variable aperture on the main camera. Those are premium recommendations, and the guide notes a price increase and limited design changes. Consider them if high-end iPhone camera and performance features matter more to you than value. Start with price, storage, and platform
Set your budget before comparing features, then check the specific storage tier available to you. The Pixel 10’s 128GB base option may be restrictive if you keep lots of photos, videos, or large apps on your phone. Decide whether you want iOS and Apple’s ecosystem or Android and the manufacturer’s software experience; changing platforms can matter more day to day than a small difference in specifications. Prices and stock vary by country and retailer, and the cited guides do not establish a current global price or availability picture.

Match the cameras to your photography
A strong main camera is enough for many everyday photos. If you regularly photograph distant subjects, look for a telephoto camera: Stuff notes that the iPhone 17 lacks one, while the Pixel 10 includes one. The iPhone 18 Pro models add a variable-aperture main camera, a feature TechRadar highlights for buyers considering the premium models. Do not pay extra for camera hardware you are unlikely to use.
Choose the screen size you will actually carry
A 6.3-inch phone such as the Pixel 10 or 10a is a more manageable option than the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s 6.9-inch display. The Ultra’s larger screen can suit people who want more room for viewing or productivity and will use its S Pen and Privacy Display; the added size is a drawback if you prefer a smaller handset. Stuff describes the iPhone 17’s screen as a 120Hz OLED display and the Pixel 10’s as a 6.3-inch 120Hz display. [Stuff]

Read battery figures as test results, not promises
Battery runtime depends on how a phone is used, so publication test results are useful for comparing a test’s outcomes but cannot predict every buyer’s day. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 results were 20 hours 34 minutes for the ROG Phone 9 Pro, 18 hours 24 minutes for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and 16 hours 10 minutes for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. TechRadar recorded 15 hours 16 minutes for the Pixel 10a in its 2026 lab test. These are separate publications’ results, not measurements from one standardized comparison. [Tom’s Guide] [TechRadar]
Check how long the phone will remain supported
For the Pixel 10a, TechRadar reports seven years of OS and security updates. For a specialist phone such as the ROG Phone 9 Pro, weigh Tom’s Guide’s warning about limited remaining software support against its gaming focus and battery-test performance. Confirm the support commitment and remaining update period for the exact model and region before buying; support details can change over time. [TechRadar] [Tom’s Guide]
