The best phone for classic games is the one that can run the specific games you want and supports the controls they need. Native Android or iPhone games, official retro ports, and console-era games played through emulation have different app availability and compatibility, so there is no single phone that is best for every retro library.
Start with the games you want to play
Make a short list of titles before comparing phones. A classic mobile game that still has an official app is a different case from a console-era game that requires an emulator. An official port may have its own operating-system and device requirements; an emulator adds another compatibility layer.

- Older native mobile games: Check whether each title is currently available for the phone’s operating system and region.
- Official retro ports: Confirm that the publisher’s app is available for your device and that it supports the controls you prefer.
- Console-era games through emulation: Verify the emulator app, its supported systems or cores, and the specific game before choosing a phone. An app’s general feature list does not guarantee that every game will work.
For example, the RetroArch App Store listing names a range of supported systems and features such as save states, key remapping, and MFi controller support. Those are claims about the listed app and its supported cores, not a promise that every system or game will run on every iPhone.

Check platform and app compatibility
After identifying your games, check each one against the phone’s operating system. Look at the individual game or emulator listing for device requirements, supported systems, and regional availability. If a title is no longer listed, or the app does not support the system you need, a faster phone will not solve that availability problem.

- TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist² with Galaxy AI.³ Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping
- MAKE IT. EDIT IT. SHARE IT: Turn everyday moments into something personal with creative tools built right into your mobile phone, whether it’s a special contact photo, custom wallpaper, an invitation or more³
- FAST. POWERFUL. AI-READY: Power through your day with AI-accelerated performance from our fastest, smoothest and most powerful Galaxy processor yet, built to keep up with everything you do
- RICHER COLOR. SHARPER DETAIL: The ultra-vivid display on Galaxy S26+ automatically makes every image sharper for a more immersive experience
- FIT EVERYONE IN THE SHOT: Group selfies are easier on your Samsung phone with a wider front camera⁴ that captures more of the scene, so no one gets left out of the moment
Do not treat a connector or a processor name as proof of compatibility. Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications list a USB-C connector, but that fact alone does not establish support for a particular retro-game app or controller.
Choose controls that suit the games
Touch controls can be adequate for games designed around tapping or swiping. Games built for directional pads and face buttons may be more comfortable with a physical controller, especially for longer sessions.

Controller compatibility is specific to the phone, controller, connection type, case, and operating system. Before buying one, confirm that the controller fits your exact phone and case and connects in a way the device supports. The RetroArch App Store listing names MFi controller support for that app; it is not a universal compatibility guarantee. Tom’s Guide’s mobile controller roundup is another place to compare controller options, but check the chosen model’s requirements against your own setup.
Compare screen, comfort, and performance realistically
A larger display can make older games easier to see, but size and shape matter to how a particular game is presented. Consider whether the game uses a wide layout, whether touch controls cover part of the screen, and whether the phone remains comfortable to hold. A controller may change how much of the display your fingers obscure.

Processor speed and refresh rate are useful criteria when comparing current phones, but neither proves how well a specific emulator or game will run. Samsung’s official Galaxy S25 specifications list a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, a maximum 120 Hz refresh rate, and a Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor. That makes the S25 a plausible Android shortlist option, not a tested recommendation or a guarantee for any particular classic game. Regional configurations and availability may vary.
Battery life during classic-game sessions is not established by those specification details. If long sessions matter, compare independent battery testing for the exact phone model you are considering rather than inferring endurance from its display or processor specifications.

How to shortlist a phone
- List the target games. Separate native mobile titles, official ports, and games you intend to run through emulation.
- Verify availability. Check the individual game and required app for your operating system, device, and region.
- Confirm controls. Decide whether touch is suitable or whether you need a controller; verify the controller’s connection, phone fit, case clearance, and OS support.
- Compare the physical experience. Consider screen size and shape, how controls use the display, and whether the phone is comfortable for the sessions you expect.
- Set a budget, then compare specifications. Use processor and display details to narrow your choices, not as proof that a particular game or emulator is compatible or performs well.
So, what phone should you get for retro games?
Choose based on the games and apps you have verified, then weigh controls, screen, comfort, and budget. The Galaxy S25 is one current Android example with a high-refresh-rate display and a current flagship processor, but the available specifications do not establish game-specific performance. The iPhone 17’s USB-C connector likewise does not establish retro-app or controller compatibility. Neither example is a universal winner: check your actual games and accessories before committing to a platform.
