For most people, the best screen-time device is the phone they already own. Start by removing unnecessary notifications, limiting the apps that capture your attention, scheduling focus and nighttime do-not-disturb periods, and creating phone-free places such as the dinner table and bedroom. If those changes are not enough, a minimalist phone can remove access to social feeds and other high-distraction services—but it also removes useful smartphone conveniences. A storage box or charging station can reinforce a household rule, although the container itself is not a proven treatment.
No phone guarantees less use. The right choice depends on which functions you must keep, which distractions cause the problem, whether a family must enforce the plan, and how much inconvenience you will accept.

Which option is best for reducing screen time?
Use this ladder, moving down only when the earlier step does not solve the problem:
- Change your existing smartphone. This costs nothing and preserves your current number, apps, camera, accessibility features and emergency tools.
- Add household rules. Screen-free meals, charging outside bedrooms and planned offline periods address the places and times when use causes the most disruption.
- Choose a limited-function phone. This is appropriate when you are willing to give up distracting apps and some smartphone convenience.
- Add a physical storage aid. A basket, lockbox or charging station can make an agreed boundary visible and easier to follow.
The comparison below shows the practical trade-off before you buy anything.

Start with the smartphone you already have
Changing settings is usually the least disruptive intervention. It lets you test whether notifications, particular apps or unstructured nighttime use are the real causes before spending money on another device.
1. Identify the applications and moments that consume attention
Review your phone’s screen-time or digital-wellbeing dashboard for a normal week. Look for repeated unlocks, long sessions and apps opened automatically rather than for a specific universal hour target. Note the situations that precede use: waiting, working, studying, eating, waking during the night or feeling stressed. A useful plan targets those triggers rather than treating every minute of screen use as equally harmful.
2. Remove interruptions before setting limits
Turn off notifications that do not require immediate action. Keep calls, messages from important contacts, calendar alerts and safety notifications if you need them; disable promotional, social and “new content” alerts. When an app has separate notification categories, disable only the distracting categories instead of silencing the entire phone.

On an iPhone, the relevant controls are under Settings > Screen Time. On Android devices, look for Digital Wellbeing & parental controls. Labels and capabilities vary by operating-system version, language and manufacturer, so confirm the current path in your phone’s documentation.
- Set a realistic limit for the one or two apps that create the most unplanned use.
- Use a focus mode or scheduled app pause during work, school, exercise, meals or family time.
- Allow essential contacts and navigation when a focus period is active.
- Remove an app or sign out if a soft limit is easy for you to override.
Limits are prompts, not proof of success. If you repeatedly extend a limit, change the environment—remove the app, move it off the home screen or keep the phone in another room—rather than adding an even lower number.

4. Schedule nighttime do-not-disturb and protect the bedroom
Schedule nighttime do-not-disturb for the hours when you are expected to sleep. Configure exceptions for emergency contacts if necessary, then charge the phone outside the bedroom or at least out of arm’s reach. The American Academy of Pediatrics identifies nighttime do-not-disturb, notification limits and keeping devices out of bedrooms as practical strategies. Its guidance does not prescribe one hour limit that fits every child or adult.
5. Make the home rule visible
Choose one or two phone-free places—such as the dinner table and a child’s bedroom—and one recurring period, such as the first hour after waking. Tell everyone what is allowed in an emergency and where devices will charge. A specific place and time is easier to follow than “use your phone less.”

Check whether sleep, concentration, conversations or activity improved. If the change had no effect, identify the remaining source: an unrestricted browser, a different device, work messages or a routine that is too difficult to maintain. Adjust one factor at a time so you know what helped.
Family and child screen-time plans
Children need a plan that considers development, responsibility, content and daily life—not simply a timer. The AAP Center of Excellence page, updated May 22, 2025, says there is not enough evidence for a single screen-time limitation that applies to all children and teens. It emphasizes quality, context, balance, communication and whether media displaces sleep, physical activity or other healthy activities. The AAP summarizes the evidence plainly: “Unfortunately, there isn’t enough evidence demonstrating a benefit from specific screen time limitation guidelines.” See the AAP screen-time guidance.
Set the first-phone plan together
AAP first-phone guidance recommends considering a child’s readiness and responsibility, setting controls and limits jointly, reviewing what works, and modeling the habits adults expect. Before handing over a phone, agree on:

Use the AAP first-phone guidance for a readiness discussion rather than treating a particular age as an automatic answer.
Use a family media plan instead of buying a device
The AAP Family Media Plan is a free planning resource for documenting priorities, screen-free times, charging locations and responses to problems. A written agreement can be more useful than a new phone when the main issue is inconsistent expectations between adults and children.
Model the rule
Children notice whether adults keep phones at the table or check messages during conversations. Adults should follow the same charging and screen-free-place rules whenever practical. If an adult must remain reachable, explain the exception rather than silently ignoring the agreement.
What the Light Phone III does—and what it does not do
The Light Phone III is a documented limited-function alternative for people who want to remove social feeds and other smartphone distractions while retaining selected utilities. The manufacturer describes a customizable toolbox rather than a completely screen-free device. Its current tool-availability page lists core communication functions and optional tools such as music, podcasts, directions and calendar; the manufacturer says the toolbox does not include social media, news, advertising or email. These are product claims, not evidence that ownership reduces screen use or improves health.
Hardware and display
The manufacturer’s specification page lists a 3.92-inch AMOLED display, 5G/LTE connectivity, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC and 128 GB of storage. The company’s display information says the screen is black and white except while using the camera. Because it still has an AMOLED screen and displays text, maps and controls, it should be described as a limited phone—not a no-screen phone.

What you retain

- Cellular connectivity, with 5G/LTE listed in the specifications.
- Directions through the available tools and GPS hardware.
- Music, podcasts and calendar tools where currently supported.
- Bluetooth, NFC and camera-related functions listed by the manufacturer.
What you give up
You give up the broad app ecosystem and the immediate availability of social media, news, advertising and email tools described by the manufacturer. Banking, workplace authentication, rides, smart-home controls and other services that require a conventional smartphone may need a separate device or another workaround. List every essential task you perform before switching; a phone that cannot handle a critical login is not a practical reduction strategy.
Availability changes over time
Tool support is not permanent. The company’s software changelog contains updates as recent as September 15, 2026. Check the current tool-availability page and software changelog immediately before purchase or migration.
Carrier and SIM checks are essential
The setup guide warns that a new Verizon SIM cannot yet be activated through the described setup flow, although an already active SIM can be activated elsewhere and inserted. Regional support, bands, eSIM or physical-SIM requirements and emergency-calling rules can change. Confirm your carrier and country conditions, return policy and number-transfer process before canceling your existing service.

A household phone basket, lockbox or charging station can support a rule you have already chosen. Put it at the entrance to a bedroom-free charging area, near the dining table or beside a study space. The value is practical: the device has a designated location, and retrieving it becomes a deliberate action.

How to choose among the options
Choose existing-phone settings when…
- You need banking, work, school, accessibility or authentication apps.
- Your main problem is interruptions or a few high-distraction apps.
- You want to test a change without spending money or changing carriers.
Choose routines plus a storage location when…
- The problem occurs at predictable times such as meals, homework or bedtime.
- Several household members need the same boundary.
- You can agree on exceptions and consistently model the rule.
Consider a limited phone when…
- You repeatedly bypass software limits.
- You can list the smartphone functions you are willing to lose.
- Your carrier and region are confirmed compatible.
- You accept that a smaller toolbox can create friction and that the device still has a screen.
Do not switch yet when…
- You have not identified the specific apps or routines causing the problem.
- You depend on an app that the limited phone cannot replace.
- You expect a purchase alone to change a family habit.
A practical seven-day rollout
- Day 1: Record your current notifications, repeated unlocks and the situations in which use feels unwanted.
- Day 2: Disable nonessential notifications and move distracting apps off the first home screen.
- Day 3: Schedule a focus period for the longest recurring distraction and permit only necessary contacts.
- Day 4: Set nighttime do-not-disturb and choose a charging location outside bedrooms.
- Day 5: Write the household rule for meals, study or bedtime; include emergency exceptions.
- Day 6: Review what you still need from a smartphone. If essential functions can be replaced, check limited-phone tools and carrier compatibility.
- Day 7: Review sleep, concentration, activity and conflicts. Keep the changes that helped and revise the rule that did not.
Evidence, health claims and realistic expectations
The World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe reported in a May 23, 2025 policy brief that evidence on technology use and young people’s well-being is mixed and that the relationship is bidirectional. Its wording is important: “The relationship between technology use and mental health is bidirectional: increased screen time potentially exacerbates mental health issues, which in turn may drive further technology use.” Individual and environmental circumstances matter, so avoid claiming that screen time alone causes a particular mental-health outcome. Read the WHO Europe policy brief.
Similarly, there is no established product trial here showing that a particular phone, grayscale setting, lockbox or charging station reliably reduces screen time. A device can remove an opportunity, add friction or make a family agreement easier to follow; the outcome still depends on the routine around it. Measure success by the result you wanted—better sleep, uninterrupted work, shared meals or more activity—not by an arbitrary number disconnected from daily life.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Setting a limit that is impossible to follow
If you need navigation, work messages or family calls, an aggressive blanket limit will create constant overrides. Separate essential tools from recreational apps and schedule the restriction around the activity you want to protect.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Silencing every notification
Turning off safety or family alerts can create risk. Keep a small allowlist of people and services that genuinely require immediate attention.
Buying a limited phone before checking dependencies
Write down authentication, transit, banking, medical, school and work requirements first. Confirm that the chosen phone supports each required function, or plan a safe alternative.
Assuming black-and-white means screen-free
A monochrome display may feel less visually stimulating, but the Light Phone III remains a screen device with an AMOLED panel. No evidence here establishes grayscale as a guaranteed behavior change.
Using a box as punishment
A storage aid works better as a predictable household location than as a surprise confiscation tool. Agree on the rule, the schedule and emergency access in advance.

Forgetting to revisit the plan
