There is no evidence-backed single best phone thermal camera for home inspections, electrical work, and outdoor use. The clearest documented option here is the wireless FLIR ONE Edge Pro, whose positioning and app features suit home inspection workflows; Seek Thermal’s CompactPRO is an alternative to investigate for electrical, roof, and insulation/HVAC tasks. Neither product should be treated as a substitute for electrical test instruments or a qualified inspection.

How to choose a phone thermal camera

Start with the job and the phone you already own. The practical differences supported by manufacturer information are how the camera connects, whether it can be positioned independently of the phone, what image enhancement or visible detail it provides, and what guidance or analysis the app offers.

  • Connection and positioning: A wireless camera can be useful when a target is difficult to reach or see from the phone’s position. A directly attached camera keeps the camera and handset together.
  • Compatibility: Confirm your exact handset, operating system, connector arrangement, case clearance, and the camera’s app support before purchase. Broad statements such as “works with iPhone and Android” do not verify every model.
  • Image and workflow: Look for documented thermal-image enhancement, visible-light detail, inspection guides, and ways to share or analyze images.
  • Job fit: Match the manufacturer’s stated applications to your task. A product being described for inspections does not establish its accuracy for every fault or its suitability for specialized outdoor work.

FLIR ONE Edge Pro Wireless; can be used away from the phone or clipped onto a phone or tablet for one-handed use. FLIR lists iOS 17 or later and Android 13 or later for smartphones and tablets. Check its current compatibility information for your exact device. FLIR describes VividIR image enhancement and MSX visible-detail overlay. Its app includes home-inspection guides; the product page also describes third-party app support, including a home-energy analysis app. Finding air leaks, insulation gaps, and moisture buildup around a house; inspecting out-of-view targets.
Seek Thermal CompactPRO Not stated in the cited manufacturer material here. Seek describes the Compact series as working with top iPhone and Android models; exact supported handsets and current support should be verified. The cited CompactPRO sheet is older. Not stated in the cited material here. The older CompactPRO product sheet depicts electrical, roof, and insulation/HVAC inspection. Seek also describes its Compact series for energy loss and electrical hazards.

Current prices, stock, and directly comparable performance results are not established by the cited product information, so this is a feature-and-fit comparison rather than a tested ranking.

FLIR ONE Edge Pro: best-documented fit for home inspection

FLIR describes the FLIR ONE Edge Pro as a wireless smartphone thermal camera. Its ability to operate away from the phone or clip to the device gives it two positioning options: hold the camera where the target is visible, or keep it attached for one-handed use. FLIR says the camera combines VividIR image enhancement with MSX, which overlays visible image detail.

#1 Best Overall
Flir One - Thermal Imaging Camera for iOS Smartphones (iPhone 15 and Newer w/USB-C), 240x180 Super Resolution (80x60 Native IR)
  • COMPATIBILITY: Infrared camera plugs directly into phone charging port and connects with iphones with USB-C (iphone 15 and newer)
  • SUPER RESOLUTION: Vivid IR technology upscales the image to 240x180 from 80x60 for greater detail and clarity. Flir MSX technology merges thermal and visual images to enhance details in real time.
  • THERMAL INSPECTION GUIDES: Within the Flir One app is a step-by-step inspection guide to help you address typical faults easily and perform accurate home inspections. Find air leaks, moisture buildup, and more
  • ACCURACY: Measures temperature within ±3°C or ±5% when the unit is within 15 °C – 35 °C and the scene is within 5 °C – 120 °C
  • JOBSITE TOUGH: Built to take the abuse that working on a jobsite dishes out every day, rated to take a drop from 1.5 meters and is built to last

For a home inspection, FLIR’s app guides are intended to help locate air leaks, insulation gaps, and moisture buildup. FLIR also describes third-party app support, including a home-energy analysis app. These features can help organize an inspection, but a thermal pattern is an observation to investigate—not, by itself, proof of a specific building defect or its cause.

Check phone and app compatibility first

FLIR lists iOS 17 and later or Android 13 and later for Edge Pro. Those operating-system thresholds do not confirm support for every handset. Before buying, check FLIR’s current compatibility information for the exact phone or tablet, app, and setup you plan to use. Also verify that your case and phone arrangement allow the camera to be clipped on if you intend to use it that way.

Seek Thermal CompactPRO: an alternative for inspection tasks

Seek Thermal’s Compact series is another phone-camera route. Seek describes the series as compatible with top iPhone and Android models and positions thermal imaging for energy loss and electrical hazards. Its older CompactPRO product sheet depicts electrical, roof, and insulation/HVAC inspection.

Because that detailed sheet is older and the compatibility description is broad, verify that the CompactPRO is currently available and supports your precise device before choosing it. The material cited here does not establish its connection details, app workflow, or a direct performance advantage over Edge Pro.

What thermal imaging can—and cannot—tell you

Home inspections

A thermal camera can show temperature patterns that may point to an area worth checking, such as a suspected air leak, insulation gap, or moisture-related concern. The camera does not identify the cause with certainty. Conditions, surface materials, and the way the inspection is conducted can affect what appears in an image; use the image as a lead for further assessment rather than a standalone diagnosis.

Electrical work

Thermal imaging can help identify temperature differences around electrical equipment, and Seek names electrical hazards among its Compact-series use cases. It does not replace a meter, other appropriate electrical test instruments, safe work procedures, or a qualified electrician. A thermal image alone cannot establish that a circuit is safe or explain the underlying electrical condition.

Buying checklist

  1. Identify your main task. Decide whether home-envelope checks, electrical troubleshooting, or another inspection context is the priority; do not assume one camera is proven best for all of them.
  2. Verify exact compatibility. Check the manufacturer’s current list for your handset, operating system, app, and connection setup—not only the phone brand.
  3. Choose the positioning style. Consider whether wireless placement away from the phone would help you see hard-to-reach or out-of-view targets.
  4. Compare the documented workflow. Check for image enhancement, visible-detail overlays, inspection guides, and supported sharing or analysis tools.
  5. Confirm current availability. Product status, stock, and price can change; the product information cited here does not establish live listings.
  6. Plan to verify findings appropriately. Treat thermal images as screening information and use suitable tests or a qualified professional when the job requires a diagnosis or safety decision.
