Best Phone Controllers for Turning Your Smartphone Into a Handheld

For most players, the Backbone One (2nd Generation) is the best phone controller for turning a smartphone into a handheld. It is compact, available with either USB-C or Lightning, connects through the phone’s native port, supports pass-through charging and has a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Choose the Razer Kishi V2 for another direct-wired option, the GameSir G8 Galileo for the most comfortable Android setup, or the GameSir G8+ MFi when you want full-size controls with a USB-C iPhone or iPad mini.

Best phone controllers at a glance

Controller Connection and compatibility Standout features Best for
Backbone One (2nd Generation) USB-C or Lightning versions; compatible iPhone and Android phones with controller-supporting games and services Compact design, pass-through charging, 3.5 mm headphone jack, plug-and-play setup Most people and frequent travel
Razer Kishi V2 USB-C and Lightning models; direct wired connection; Android touch remapping through Razer Nexus Tactile controls, pass-through charging, extendable bridge Players who want a wired alternative and Android touch controls
GameSir G8 Galileo Officially Android-only Full-size grips, Hall-effect sticks and triggers, two programmable rear buttons, pass-through charging, 3.5 mm audio Long Android sessions where comfort matters more than bag space
GameSir G8+ MFi USB-C iPhone, iPad mini 6 and later, and Android 8.0 or later Full-size layout, Hall-effect controls, improved case clearance, MFi certification USB-C iPhone or iPad mini owners who want console-sized grips

Connector, operating-system support and case clearance are more important than small feature differences. A controller with the wrong port will not become compatible through an adapter, and a phone in a thick case may not seat deeply enough for the plug to connect.

How a phone controller turns a phone into a handheld

These products split into two practical designs. Compact telescopic controllers hold the phone between two short grips, while full-size models use a wider, deeper chassis that feels closer to a traditional console gamepad. In both cases, the controller supplies physical sticks, buttons and triggers while the phone provides the display, processor, battery and game connection.

The USB-C and Lightning models in this guide connect directly to the phone. That wired link avoids pairing and generally keeps input and power management simpler than Bluetooth. It does not make every game compatible: the game or streaming app must accept a standard controller, unless the controller’s software provides an allowed touch-mapping function.

#1 Best Overall
Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Choose the connector before anything else

USB-C phones and iPhones

Newer iPhones use USB-C, as do most current Android phones. Buy a USB-C version of the Backbone One or Razer Kishi V2 for those devices. The GameSir G8+ MFi is designed for USB-C iPhone models, iPad mini 6 and later, and Android 8.0 or later.

USB-C alone does not guarantee a fit. Phones differ in port position, thickness and the amount of housing around the connector. Check the controller’s supported-device list and measure the phone with its case installed before ordering.

Lightning iPhones

Older iPhones with Lightning need the Lightning version of the Backbone One or Razer Kishi V2. A USB-C controller is not a substitute for a Lightning model. Do not assume that a passive adapter will preserve the mechanical fit, power behavior or controller communication.

Android-only and officially supported devices

The original GameSir G8 Galileo is officially Android-only. Unofficial reports of it working with an iPhone should not be treated as supported compatibility. If you use an iPhone, choose a model whose documentation explicitly supports your connector and operating system, such as the appropriate Backbone or Kishi version or the G8+ MFi.

Detailed picks

Backbone One (2nd Generation): best plug-and-play choice

The second-generation Backbone One is the easiest recommendation for a mixed library of mobile, cloud and remote-play games. It is available in USB-C and Lightning versions, so the important purchase decision is selecting the correct SKU for your phone. The controller plugs into the phone’s native port and does not require a separate Bluetooth pairing step.

Backbone documents support for controller-compatible App Store and Google Play games, along with compatible cloud and remote-play services. Its documentation specifically describes playing games from Xbox, PlayStation or a PC through supported apps, as well as Apple Arcade and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Compatibility still belongs to the game or service: a catalog can change, and an app may require its own subscription or remote-console configuration.

Rank #2
Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Pass-through charging lets you charge the phone while the controller remains attached. A 3.5 mm headphone jack is useful when you want wired audio without occupying the phone’s charging port. The trade-off is its slim, travel-friendly shape: it takes less room in a bag but does not provide the deep, full-size palm support of the GameSir G8 designs.

Backbone’s product documentation says: “Snap in your phone and play any game or service that supports controllers, including Apple Arcade, XBOX Game Pass Ultimate, or even stream from your XBOX, PlayStation or PC.” Treat “supports controllers” as the key condition rather than as a promise that every title in those services will accept a gamepad.

Razer Kishi V2: best direct-wired alternative

The Razer Kishi V2 is another telescopic controller that connects directly to the phone. Razer documents separate USB-C and Lightning models, direct low-latency connection, pass-through charging and a stable extendable bridge intended to hold modern smartphones securely.

The Kishi V2’s tactile buttons and compact layout suit players who prefer a firm, clickier control feel. On Android, Razer Nexus adds touch remapping for games that do not expose native controller input. This is an Android-only feature and remains subject to the game’s rules; it is not a universal way to make every title compatible, and it does not provide the same function on iPhone.

Razer product documentation describes the design this way: “The Razer Kishi V2 features a stable, extendable bridge that perfectly holds all modern smartphone models, providing a secure fit that won’t come loose while you game.” Check the exact phone list and case guidance rather than interpreting that statement as proof that every case will fit.

GameSir G8 Galileo: best comfort for Android

The G8 Galileo is the comfort-first option in this group. Its wider body and full-size grips are better suited to long sessions than a slim telescopic controller, but the larger deck takes more space in a backpack or drawer. It is officially an Android controller.

TechRadar reports Hall-effect sticks and triggers, two programmable rear buttons, pass-through charging and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Hall-effect sensing can avoid the physical contact used by many conventional stick and trigger mechanisms, but no independent durability or drift test is established here; consider it a hardware feature, not a guaranteed lifespan.

The G8 Galileo makes sense for an Android phone that you use for extended action, racing or role-playing sessions. It is a poor choice if you switch between iPhone and Android, need a compact travel controller or require official iPhone support.

GameSir G8+ MFi: full-size controls for USB-C iPhone and iPad mini

The G8+ MFi is the full-size alternative when your device is a USB-C iPhone, an iPad mini 6 or later, or an Android phone running Android 8.0 or later. TechRadar reports MFi certification, Android and iOS app support, Hall-effect controls and improved case clearance.

Its list price at the time of TechRadar’s review was $79.99 / £79.99 / AU$129.99. Those are reference list prices, not a permanent street price; retailer discounts, stock and regional taxes can change the amount you actually pay.

The G8+ MFi is wider and less portable than the Backbone One or Kishi V2. Choose it when palm support and full-size controls outweigh the need for a small travel footprint. Confirm that your iPhone is a USB-C model: MFi certification does not make it a Lightning controller.

Portability versus comfort

A compact controller is easier to carry and quicker to attach. The Backbone One is the lightest, slimmest style represented here, and the Kishi V2 follows the same telescopic approach. These designs are convenient for commuting, hotel rooms and occasional play.

  • [360 ° Flexible Rotation Design] Comes with a rotatable lanyard ring that supports 360 ° free rotation, effectively solving the problem of twisted and tangled lanyards

Compatible with most smartphones such as iPhone, compatible with various wristbands, lanyards, crossbody straps, and keychains
  • [Durable and Portable Material] Premium rust-resistant stainless steel material with good flexibility, which not only avoids scratching the phone case, but also has excellent anti rust and anti fading performance
  • [Multi scenario Practical] Paired with a lanyard or wristband, hands-free use can be achieved. The phone is within reach and not easily dropped, ideal for daily commuting and outdoor activities. Suitable for full coverage phone cases, does not support half coverage phone cases
  • [Quality Service] If you find any damage or other issues with the product upon receipt, please contact us immediately. We will handle it quickly

Full-size controllers place your hands farther apart and give your palms more material to support. The G8 Galileo and G8+ MFi are more comfortable for long sessions, especially in games that use both sticks and triggers continuously. The cost is bulk: measure the controller against the pocket or case in which you plan to carry it.

  • Choose a telescopic model when portability, quick setup and a small storage footprint are priorities.
  • Choose a full-size GameSir model when hand support and long-session comfort matter more than travel space.
  • Do not infer comfort from stick technology alone; grip depth, weight distribution and the position of rear buttons affect fatigue just as much.

Controls, sticks and remapping

The Backbone One focuses on compact, familiar controls and straightforward compatibility. The Kishi V2 adds tactile buttons and Android touch remapping through Razer Nexus. The two GameSir G8 models use Hall-effect sticks and triggers; the G8 Galileo also adds two programmable rear buttons, while the G8+ MFi emphasizes its full-size layout and improved case clearance.

Native controller support is preferable to touch mapping because the game receives standard gamepad input. Touch mapping can be useful for an Android game that has no controller mode, but mappings can be awkward, may need to be recreated after an update and can violate a game’s rules in competitive environments. Check the individual game’s terms before enabling it.

Charging and audio while you play

Backbone One and Razer Kishi V2 document pass-through charging, so a charger can feed the phone while the controller is attached. The G8 Galileo also provides pass-through charging. This is useful for long sessions, but it does not eliminate heat or battery-wear considerations; charging while a demanding game runs can make the phone warmer.

Backbone One and G8 Galileo include a 3.5 mm headphone jack. A comparison from Tom’s Guide lists the Bluetooth GameSir G8 Plus without pass-through charging or a headphone jack. Do not confuse that Bluetooth product with the wired G8+ MFi: check the name, connection method and feature list on the exact package before buying.

Will your phone case fit?

Case compatibility is the most common mechanical failure point. A controller may support the phone’s dimensions but still fail because the case adds thickness around the back, covers the port area or prevents the phone from reaching the connector.

  • 【Press Down Firmly Every 30 Minutes】Use your palm or fingers to press the phone down firmly and check it's secure before letting go. Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.
  1. Identify the phone’s exact model and port: USB-C or Lightning.
  2. Read the controller’s case-clearance guidance for that model.
  3. Measure the phone with the case installed, including any camera bump or raised edge near the port.
  4. Look for a removable rubber insert or adjustable bridge if the controller documentation provides one.
  5. After insertion, verify that the plug is fully seated and that the phone does not flex or pull sideways on the connector.

The G8+ MFi is reported to have improved case clearance, but that does not mean every rugged or wallet case will fit. If your case is unusually thick, plan to remove it during play or use a thinner case.

Game, cloud and remote-play support

A controller is only as useful as the software accepting its input. Native support is common in many premium mobile games, but it is not universal. Cloud and remote-play apps also have their own device, subscription and network requirements.

  • Check the game’s store listing or in-game settings for controller support before purchasing.
  • For cloud gaming, confirm that the specific service and app support your phone’s operating system and controller input.
  • For remote play, configure the console or PC app separately; attaching a controller does not establish the remote connection.
  • Expect catalogs, app support and requirements to change by region and date.

Backbone lists Xbox, PlayStation, Steam and cloud services among the ecosystems it can access through compatible apps. That describes the controller’s role as an input device, not a bundled subscription or guarantee that every game in those ecosystems will work.

Setup instructions

USB-C or Lightning wired controller

  1. Update the phone’s operating system and install the game or streaming app you intend to use.
  2. Open the controller’s companion app if the manufacturer requires it, and install any available controller firmware update.
  3. Close the game, expand the controller and insert the phone straight into the native connector.
  4. Launch the game or service and open its control settings. Select the gamepad option if it is not detected automatically.
  5. Test every stick, trigger, shoulder button and the phone’s audio before starting a long session.

Android touch remapping with Kishi V2

  1. Install Razer Nexus on the Android phone and grant only the permissions the app requests for its mapping feature.
  2. Attach the Kishi V2 and create a profile for the game that lacks native controller support.
  3. Place virtual controls over the game’s touch targets and test movement, aiming and menus.
  4. Save the profile and verify that the game permits touch-mapping tools, particularly in competitive or online modes.

Troubleshooting common problems

The phone is not detected

  • Confirm that you bought the correct USB-C or Lightning version.
  • Remove the case and reconnect the phone, checking that the plug is fully inserted.
  • Restart the game after attaching the controller; some apps detect gamepads only at launch.
  • Update the controller firmware and companion app where applicable.
  • Test with a second controller-compatible game to determine whether the issue is hardware or app-specific.

Buttons work in menus but not in the game

The game may lack native controller support. Look for a controller setting, use an officially supported mapping feature on Android where allowed, or choose a different title. Do not assume that a cloud-service app’s controller support extends to every game it hosts.

Charging or headphones do not work

Use the controller’s pass-through port rather than the phone’s port when the design requires it. Check whether the exact model includes a 3.5 mm jack: Backbone One and G8 Galileo do, while Tom’s Guide lists the Bluetooth G8 Plus without one. If charging stops during heavy play, test another cable and power adapter and check the phone for thermal warnings.

The connector feels loose

Stop playing and inspect the port for lint or damage. Recheck case clearance and the phone’s alignment. A controller should support the phone without forcing the plug upward or sideways; continued use in that position can damage the phone’s port.

Which controller should you buy?

  • Buy Backbone One (2nd Generation) if you want the simplest, most portable option and can select the correct USB-C or Lightning version.
  • Buy Razer Kishi V2 if you prefer tactile controls, a direct wired connection and Android touch remapping.
  • Buy GameSir G8 Galileo if you use Android and prioritize full-size comfort, Hall-effect controls and rear buttons over portability.
  • Buy GameSir G8+ MFi if you have a USB-C iPhone, iPad mini 6 or later, or Android 8.0+ and want a wide, console-style grip with improved case clearance.

No independent laboratory latency or durability testing is established for these recommendations, so the distinctions above come from documented features and published hands-on descriptions rather than a single controlled benchmark. Retail prices, stock and app catalogs are volatile; verify the exact model and current terms immediately before purchase.
