For music, start with the default or neutral EQ and change it only to suit your preference. For video, prioritize dialogue clarity; for noisy calls, try a voice-focused microphone mode if your device and call app support one.
Start with neutral playback for music
Begin with your phone’s default sound profile or a neutral EQ setting. Then compare other options with the same track at the same volume; changing one setting at a time makes it easier to tell whether you prefer the result. EQ and spatial effects alter how audio is presented, not whether a profile is objectively best for everyone.

On Samsung Galaxy phones
On supported models, Samsung’s Sound quality and effects settings may offer EQ presets—Normal, Pop, Classic, Jazz, Rock, and Custom—as well as Dolby Atmos and other effects. Menu contents vary by device and software. Start with Normal, then audition a preset or make a modest Custom adjustment if you want a different tonal balance. Treat Dolby Atmos or spatial processing as an optional sound preference, not an automatic improvement. See Samsung’s guide to sound quality and effects.

Its Scalable Codec is a Samsung-specific compatibility feature: Samsung says it is enabled automatically on Galaxy devices running Android 7 (Nougat) or later when paired with a compatible Bluetooth device, adjusting bitrate in response to interference. It is not a general Android setting that every listener needs to find or enable. Accessory and device compatibility matter.

On iPhone with supported headphones
Headphone Accommodations can amplify soft sounds or adjust certain frequencies with supported headphones. Apple lets you apply accommodations separately to Phone and Media, so a change intended for calls does not have to affect music or other media. Find the controls in Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations. For supported headphones and details, see Apple’s iPhone audio settings guide.
For video, make dialogue easier to hear
If speech is difficult to understand, try a dialogue enhancement option before adding immersive or spatial effects. Apple’s Enhance Dialogue is available for supported video in the Apple TV app; it is not a system-wide setting that changes dialogue in every video app. The control and availability depend on the content and app. See Apple’s instructions for audio settings and Enhance Dialogue. Galaxy sound options differ by model and software, so check the available controls on your phone rather than assuming a specific effect is present.

For calls, choose between voice focus and ambient sound
When background noise is getting in the way, a voice-focused mic mode may help. When the other person should hear the surrounding environment too, use a standard or broader-capture mode if the call app offers one.

During a supported call or recording, open Control Center and select the microphone mode. Voice Isolation prioritizes your voice and reduces ambient noise; Wide Spectrum preserves more surrounding sound. These choices are context-dependent: Apple says Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum in FaceTime audio or video and certain third-party apps require iOS 15 or later; Voice Isolation for a phone call requires iOS 16.4 or later; Automatic mic mode requires iOS 18 or later. Wide Spectrum is not available for phone calls. App and device support can vary. Check Apple’s current guide to microphone modes for supported contexts.

Samsung Galaxy: Voice focus or Full spectrum
On select Galaxy devices and supported call contexts, Mic mode may offer Standard, Voice focus, and Full spectrum. Voice focus applies stronger filtering to emphasize your voice; Full spectrum preserves more surrounding sound. If Mic mode does not appear, Samsung says the phone may not support it for that app or call type. Availability can depend on whether you are on a cellular call, using speakerphone, or in a supported VoIP app. See Samsung’s instructions for Mic mode.

If some frequencies are hard to hear or soft sounds are difficult to make out, explore your phone’s accessibility and personalization settings. Apple’s Headphone Accommodations can adjust supported headphones and can be assigned to calls, media, or both. Samsung’s Adapt Sound can create a personalized sound profile on supported devices; its location and availability may vary. These features are listening aids, not a substitute for professional hearing care.

On iPhone, the Audio & Visual settings also include mono audio and left-right balance. Apple documents Phone Noise Cancellation as available and on by default on iPhone 12 and earlier; do not assume that control exists on newer models. Why a setting may be missing
- Phone model or software: Audio effects and microphone modes are not available on every device or OS version.
- App or call type: A mic mode may work in one supported calling app but not in a cellular call, speakerphone context, or another app.
- Accessory compatibility: Some headphone accommodations and Samsung audio features require supported headphones or a compatible Galaxy pairing.
- Content-specific controls: A dialogue option in one video app does not necessarily carry over to other apps.
If a setting is absent, check the phone’s current settings and the manufacturer’s support page for your model and software version. Do not assume a feature is universal just because it appears on another phone.
