Adobe Photoshop is the best choice when you need control over the selection, sampled area and output layer. Google Photos’ Magic Eraser is faster for casual photobombers, especially on supported phones. Neither option is proven to produce the most realistic result in every scene, so choose by workflow and inspect the edited area at full size.

How to remove a person in Photoshop
Option 1: Trace the person and use Content-Aware Fill
- Open the image in Photoshop and choose a selection tool.
- Trace around the person you want to remove. Adobe’s tutorial states: “With our practice file, or a photo of your own, use a selection tool to trace around the subject you want to remove.”
- Open Content-Aware Fill. Photoshop displays a green overlay showing the areas sampled to rebuild the background.
- Subtract areas from that overlay when Photoshop is sampling another person, a shadow, a railing or another unsuitable texture.
- Set the output to a new layer, as shown in Adobe’s tutorial, so the original image stays on a separate layer.
- Apply the fill, hide and show the new layer, and inspect the result at 100% zoom before exporting.
This method is the strongest documented choice when the person overlaps edges, repeated patterns or a complicated background and you need to decide what Photoshop should copy.

Option 2: Photoshop’s Remove tool
- Choose the Remove tool from Photoshop’s retouching tools.
- Paint over the person or distraction, keeping the brush coverage slightly beyond the visible subject.
- Use the documented Auto or generative-AI processing choices where available.
- Review the generated area and undo or repaint sections that disturb lines, textures or shadows.
Adobe documents the Remove tool for people and other distractions, but the result can differ with the image, version and selected processing mode. Details are in Photoshop’s Remove tool help.
Option 3: Delete and Fill Selection
For a selected subject, Photoshop’s Delete and Fill Selection command removes the selection and fills the area with content matched to its surroundings. It is a convenient shortcut, but Adobe’s documentation does not guarantee a seamless result for every selection. Read the current workflow at Delete and Fill Selection help.

How to remove a photobomber in Google Photos or on Pixel
- Open the image in Google Photos on a device that supports the editing feature.
- Enter the editor and choose Magic Eraser.
- Let the app suggest distractions when suggestions appear, or circle the person yourself.
- Apply the proposed removal, then zoom in and check the filled region.
- Save a copy or revert if the new background breaks an edge, pattern or perspective line.
Google describes Magic Eraser as a way to remove “photobombers” and other distractions. Its Pixel product page describes circling an unwanted object and having the tool fill the space: Google’s Pixel Magic Eraser description.
Google announced on May 15, 2024 that Magic Eraser and several other AI editing features would become available in Google Photos without a subscription, subject to device and feature conditions. That is a dated availability statement, not a guarantee for every current account, region or app version. Check the Google Photos editing page and your app’s current requirements.

Adobe Firefly’s generative brush option
Adobe’s Firefly feature page describes a Generative Remove brush: paint over the person, let Firefly generate replacement content, and download the resulting image. This can be useful when you prefer a browser-based generative workflow, but the documentation does not establish a comparative quality score, privacy result or current plan allowance. Choose by scene, not by a universal ranking
Use Photoshop when control matters
- The person crosses a horizon, building edge, fence or other precise line.
- You need to control which background pixels are sampled.
- You want a separate output layer so the original remains intact in the documented Content-Aware Fill workflow.
- You are prepared to make several small selections instead of one broad stroke.
Use Google Photos or Pixel for speed
- The unwanted person is a relatively isolated photobomber.
- You are editing on a phone and want a quick circle-and-fill interaction.
- The surrounding background is simple enough to review quickly.
Try Firefly for a generative brush workflow
Firefly is a reasonable fit when you want to paint over the subject rather than build a Photoshop selection. Treat the generated replacement as an editable suggestion and verify the service’s current access terms.

Quality-control checklist after removal
- View the image at 100% and at the final sharing size.
- Follow straight lines across the edited area: horizons, walls, tiles, roads and railings should not jump.
- Check hair, fingers, shadows and reflections, which can leave recognizable fragments.
- Look for repeated textures or cloned objects that reveal the fill.
- Compare the edit with the original before saving.
- Undo, repaint, or make a smaller selection when the replacement damages an edge or pattern.
What “best” means for person removal in 2026
The official documentation establishes different levels of control, not a definitive quality ranking. Photoshop offers the most explicit selection and sampling controls; Google Photos and Pixel emphasize a faster distraction-removal interaction; Firefly offers a generative brush. The most reliable choice is the one whose controls match the scene and whose result you are willing to inspect and refine.
