The safest default for an autonomous AI agent is deny by default, least privilege, and external enforcement. Start it with read-only access to the specific files, records, tools, and domains needed for one task. Add narrowly scoped write access only when the task requires it, isolate execution in a disposable sandbox, use a short-lived identity, and require human approval for destructive, financial, administrative, credential, or externally visible actions.
This guide shows how to turn that principle into concrete filesystem, shell, network, identity, approval, delegation, and audit settings.

Why permission design matters more than a clever prompt
An autonomous agent can pursue a goal through many tool calls with limited supervision. If its tools expose more capability than the task needs, a faulty instruction, prompt injection, compromised dependency, or simple reasoning error can turn a harmless request into data loss, unauthorized changes, or an external disclosure.
OWASP describes this as excessive agency: excessive functionality, excessive permissions, or excessive autonomy. The resulting harm can affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. A prompt that says “do not delete files” is only a request to the model; it is not a security boundary. The executor must make deletion impossible unless a separate policy decision authorizes it.

OpenAI’s 2023 governance paper also treats agentic systems as systems that pursue complex goals with limited direct supervision, which makes accountability a lifecycle concern rather than a one-time prompt-setting exercise. Permissions therefore need an owner, an expiration condition, an approval record, and a way to revoke them while the task is running.
The baseline permission profile
Use the following profile for a new agent. It is intentionally conservative: every exception should be tied to a task requirement and removed when that requirement ends.
| Control area | Recommended default | What to allow only by exception |
|---|---|---|
| Tool and API calls | Deny all tools until an allowlist is attached to the task. | Only named operations on named resources, with an approval state where required. |
| Filesystem | Read-only access to specific project paths. | Writes to an isolated workspace; deletion and access to secrets remain blocked. |
| Shell and code execution | Run inside a non-root disposable sandbox with CPU, memory, process, and time limits. | Package installation, privileged commands, host access, or commands outside the allowlist. |
| Network | No outbound connections. | Exact domains and ports needed for the task; block raw IP and arbitrary DNS where practical. |
| Credentials | A separate agent identity with short-lived, task-bound tokens. | Write, administrative, production, or credential-management roles after explicit approval. |
| Human approval | Required for irreversible, high-impact, or externally visible actions. | Pre-approved low-risk reads and reversible edits with narrow scope. |
| Delegation | Subagents inherit a reduced permission set. | Additional capabilities only through a new policy decision, never through a model request. |
| Lifecycle and audit | Expire grants at completion, timeout, cancellation, or identity change; log every decision. | Extensions require a fresh review and a new expiry time. |
Enforce permissions outside the model
Put a policy decision point or execution proxy between the model and every tool. The model may propose an action, but the proxy should independently validate:
Recommended Free Tools
- the initiating human and the agent identity;
- the tool and operation being requested;
- the target resource and its sensitivity;
- the task, time window, and remaining scope;
- the current approval state; and
- whether the request violates a deny rule.
This arrangement follows the OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet principle that an agent can propose an action while a policy service or execution component independently validates scope, privilege, and approval before execution. It also prevents a prompt injection from changing permissions merely by instructing the model to “act as administrator.”
What the policy record should contain
For each grant, record the human who initiated the task, the agent identity, the tool, the operation, the resource pattern, the reason, the start time, the expiry time, and any required approver. Bind the decision to those fields so that approval for one file or endpoint cannot be replayed against another.
Keep prompts and policy separate
Prompts can explain safe operating rules and ask the model to pause, but policy must live in enforceable controls such as operating-system permissions, container profiles, API gateways, network firewalls, and a central authorization service. Documentation alone does not make an unauthorized action impossible.
Separate read, write, and high-impact capabilities
Do not expose one universal tool that can read, modify, delete, publish, and administer. Split capabilities so that a read-only analysis role cannot silently invoke a destructive branch.

| Capability tier | Typical operations | Permission treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Read-only analysis | List files, search records, parse documents, run tests that do not change state. | Usually available without interactive approval when the resource allowlist is narrow. |
| Controlled write | Create or edit files in a disposable workspace, open a draft, update a test database. | Permit only in a named path or staging system; require a diff, size limit, and rollback path. |
| High-impact | Delete data, publish content, send messages, move money, change access, rotate credentials, or alter production systems. | Separate role and tool; pause for human approval and revalidate parameters immediately before execution. |
Approval should cover the concrete operation, target, and parameters, not merely the broad task. “Update the website” is too vague; “publish this identified draft to this site at this time” is reviewable.
Filesystem settings that prevent destructive access
Mount only the required paths
Give the agent a project directory or a temporary working tree, not the entire home directory or host filesystem. Mount source material read-only when the agent only needs to inspect it. Mount a separate writable output directory when it must create artifacts.
- Allowlist exact project paths rather than using a broad parent such as the whole home directory.
- Deny SSH private keys, cloud credential directories, password stores, browser profiles, environment files containing secrets, and production mounts.
- Use a temporary workspace that is destroyed after the task unless a human explicitly promotes its output.
- Apply file-size, file-count, and path-traversal checks to prevent a tool from escaping its assigned directory.
Make deletion a distinct operation
Do not implement deletion as an unrestricted shell command. Expose a dedicated delete tool that accepts only an approved resource identifier, shows the exact target and impact, and requires a fresh approval. If the task can use archival or trash semantics, provide that reversible operation instead of permanent deletion.
Review changes before promotion
For code or configuration, let the agent write to a branch or staging directory. Generate a diff and run validation before a human or separate release process promotes it. This keeps the agent’s write permission from becoming production-change permission.
Sandbox shell and code execution
Run untrusted or autonomous code in a dev container, disposable virtual machine, or operating-system sandbox. Anthropic’s zero-trust guidance calls sandboxing table stakes for agents handling untrusted input.
- Run as a non-root user with a minimal filesystem and no host device access.
- Apply CPU, memory, process-count, disk, and wall-clock limits so a loop cannot consume the host.
- Block privilege escalation, host mounts, kernel interfaces, and access to the container runtime socket.
- Require approval before installing packages, invoking compilers or interpreters outside the allowlist, or running commands that alter system state.
- Capture stdout, stderr, exit status, files changed, and resource usage for later review.
Isolation reduces blast radius; it does not make a dangerous command acceptable. A sandbox with broad network access or mounted credentials can still leak data, so combine execution isolation with egress and identity controls.
Restrict network egress
Set outbound network access to deny by default. Add only the exact domains, ports, protocols, and methods the task needs. For example, a documentation task might need one package registry and one source-control endpoint, while an offline analysis task needs none.

Use an allowlist, not a category
“Allow the internet” or “allow cloud APIs” is not a useful boundary. Name the domains and ports, route traffic through a proxy that logs requests, and block direct connections where possible. Consider blocking raw IP destinations, unapproved DNS resolvers, and alternate protocols that bypass the proxy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsProtect against data exfiltration
Limit request size and destination, inspect uploads, and prevent the agent from sending arbitrary file contents. Separate the ability to fetch public data from the ability to upload data. A tool that posts a message, opens a ticket, or publishes content should be treated as externally visible and require approval unless its scope is demonstrably harmless.
Use a separate, short-lived identity
Create an identity for the agent rather than reusing a person’s session, administrator account, or long-lived access key. Give it only the roles needed for the current task, and issue credentials that expire automatically.
- Separate read identities from write identities so a read-only workflow cannot mint or borrow write access.
- Keep tokens out of prompts, source files, environment files, command history, and ordinary logs.
- Prefer a broker that injects a narrowly scoped credential only for the approved tool call.
- Bind each authorization decision to the human, agent, tool, operation, and target resource.
- Revoke tokens on cancellation, timeout, suspected compromise, or identity change.
NIST SP 800-171r3 expresses the underlying rule as allowing only authorized access for users or processes acting on their behalf that is necessary to accomplish assigned organizational tasks. That applies to service identities as well as people.
Human approval for high-impact actions
Require a pause before any action that is destructive, financially consequential, administrative, credential-related, privacy-sensitive, or visible to outsiders. The approval interface should show the exact operation, affected resources, parameters, proposed side effects, and expiry.
Examples that should pause
- Permanent deletion or bulk modification of records.
- Publishing code, documents, or configuration to a public or production destination.
- Sending email, messages, posts, or support responses to external recipients.
- Moving money, placing an order, changing billing, or approving a transaction.
- Creating users, changing roles, disabling controls, or modifying access policies.
- Reading, exporting, rotating, or installing credentials and secrets.
Revalidate immediately before execution
Do not treat an approval from an earlier step as permanent. Recheck the target, amount, recipient, content hash, and current policy immediately before execution. If any parameter changes, require a new decision. This prevents an agent from obtaining approval for a harmless preview and then substituting a different payload.
Permission prompts are useful review signals but are not a complete security boundary. A manipulated agent may exploit an allowed tool or persuade a user to approve a dangerous action, so independent authorization, sandboxing, egress controls, logging, and revocation must remain in place.

Constrain delegated agents and tool protocols
When an agent launches a subagent or calls an MCP-style tool, pass a reduced capability set, not the parent’s full access. Delegation should narrow scope by resource, operation, and time. A subagent that only summarizes documents does not need the parent’s write or network permissions.
- Make inherited permissions explicit and inspectable.
- Prevent a subagent from granting itself new tools or forwarding credentials.
- Require the parent policy service to approve any capability elevation.
- Log the full chain: initiating human, parent agent, subagent, tool, operation, and resource.
- Expire delegated grants when the parent task ends or the delegate becomes idle beyond its allowed window.
Never broaden permissions merely because a model claims that a broader tool is necessary. It must return a request that a human or policy owner can evaluate against the original task.

Every grant needs a stop condition. Expire it when the task completes, reaches its timeout, is cancelled, or the initiating identity changes. NIST’s least-privilege guidance also calls for reviewing and removing privileges as needed.
Log decisions, not just commands
An audit trail should show the request, policy result, approver, exact scope, credential used, tool response, and resulting state change. Record denied attempts as well as successful actions; repeated denials can reveal prompt injection or a broken workflow.
Provide an emergency revoke path
Operators need a control that invalidates active tokens, disables the agent identity, and blocks its network routes without waiting for the model to cooperate. Test this path, and ensure queued actions cannot execute after revocation.
A practical implementation sequence
- Define the task boundary. Write down the goal, permitted resources, expected outputs, maximum duration, and actions that must remain human-only.
- Create the agent identity. Use a dedicated service account or workload identity with short-lived credentials and no standing administrator role.
- Build the deny policy. Start with all tools, paths, network destinations, and write operations blocked.
- Add read-only access. Allowlist only the files, records, APIs, and domains required to understand the task.
- Isolate execution. Start a non-root disposable container or VM with resource limits, no host mounts, and a temporary writable workspace.
- Add narrowly scoped writes. Permit creation or editing only in the workspace or staging target; expose deletion and publication as separate operations.
- Configure approval gates. Require approval for destructive, financial, administrative, credential, and externally visible actions, with parameter-level revalidation.
- Attach egress controls. Allow exact domains and ports through a logged proxy; leave all other outbound traffic blocked.
- Instrument the path. Log policy decisions, tool calls, file changes, network requests, approvals, denials, and token issuance.
- Test failure modes. Try path traversal, prompt injection, unauthorized tool calls, oversized outputs, expired tokens, network bypasses, and cancellation during an action.
- Set automatic expiry. Revoke grants and destroy the workspace at completion, timeout, cancellation, or identity change.
- Review and adjust. Examine logs, remove unused permissions, and update the allowlist only when a demonstrated task requirement justifies it.
Common misconfigurations and fixes
“Read-only” access that can still execute commands
A read-only filesystem does not prevent a shell from reading secrets, opening network connections, or exploiting a writable temporary directory. Remove shell access when it is unnecessary, then sandbox and constrain any interpreter that remains.
A broad workspace mount
Mounting an entire home directory exposes credentials and unrelated personal data. Replace it with named project paths and a separate output directory.
Best Value
Approval without parameter binding
An approval dialog that says only “allow the agent to send” can be reused for a different recipient or payload. Bind approval to the exact destination, content or artifact hash, and operation parameters.
Long-lived credentials in environment variables
Environment variables can leak through diagnostics, child processes, crash reports, or logs. Use a brokered, short-lived token and redact secrets from telemetry.
Network allowlisting by broad service category
Allowing all cloud storage or all package registries creates unnecessary exfiltration paths. Permit the exact hostnames and ports, and separate download from upload capability.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Subagents inheriting unrestricted authority
Delegation can multiply the blast radius. Pass only the minimum inherited scope and require a new policy decision for any elevation.
Relying on the model to self-report completion
The model may stop early, loop, or claim success incorrectly. Enforce timeouts, inspect tool results, verify state independently, and revoke access when the workflow ends.
How to evaluate an agent configuration
When comparing platforms or internal designs, score the controls rather than the marketing description. These questions expose meaningful differences:
| Evaluation axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Deny-by-default precision | Can you allow one operation on one resource without granting a broad role? |
| External enforcement | Is authorization checked by a policy service or executor, independently of the model? |
| Isolation scope | Can you restrict filesystem mounts, host privileges, processes, and network egress separately? |
| Read/write separation | Are analysis, editing, deletion, publication, and administration distinct tools or roles? |
| Approval controls | Does approval bind to exact parameters and get rechecked immediately before execution? |
| Credential lifetime | Are tokens short-lived, task-bound, revocable, and absent from prompts and logs? |
| Auditability | Can operators review grants, denials, tool calls, data changes, and delegated actions? |
| Delegation coverage | Do subagents and tool protocols inherit reduced permissions without self-escalation? |
Bottom line
Give an autonomous agent the smallest read-only capability that can complete the task, then add one narrowly scoped permission at a time. Enforce the decision outside the model, isolate execution, deny unnecessary network paths, use short-lived identities, require approval for high-impact actions, and expire and audit every grant. This combination limits both the probability of an unauthorized action and the damage if the agent is manipulated or simply wrong.
