Best Permadeath Games for Beginners Who Want Persistent Upgrades

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Start with Hades if you want the easiest all-round introduction to permadeath-style runs. It combines permanent progression, an optional God Mode that becomes stronger after each death, and a story that advances between attempts. Choose Rogue Legacy 2 if your main reason for playing is to make every failed run build a stronger future character and family estate. Choose Dead Cells if you want the most combat-focused challenge and are willing to learn through no-checkpoint runs.

All three are commonly described as rogue-lites or permadeath-inspired games rather than strict traditional roguelikes, because something meaningful survives failure. The important difference is what persists: Hades emphasizes character upgrades and narrative, Rogue Legacy 2 emphasizes inheritance and estate growth, and Dead Cells emphasizes unlocks and access to additional routes.

Quick recommendations

Game Best beginner fit What survives a failed run How the game helps you learn Main demand
Hades Most first-time permadeath players Permanent progression, story progress and God Mode resistance Difficulty modifiers, an always-available assist option and narrative motivation Fast-paced action and repeated combat decisions
Rogue Legacy 2 Players who want upgrades to be the central reward Manor growth, heirs, heirlooms and other persistent improvements An extensive level-up system plus ways to keep progressing when a run is difficult Adapting to different classes, traits, weapons and biomes
Dead Cells Players who specifically want demanding 2D combat Permanent unlocks and access to additional levels or routes Pattern recognition and route knowledge learned across no-checkpoint attempts Precise, pattern-based “souls-lite” combat under a constant permadeath threat

These recommendations are about the documented progression systems and beginner aids, not a claim of personal playtesting. Genre labels vary by source, so “rogue-lite” here means a run-based game in which at least some progress remains after death.

What permadeath and persistent upgrades mean

Permadeath raises the cost of a mistake

In a permadeath loop, a failed attempt ends the current run. You return to an earlier starting point instead of loading a nearby checkpoint, and the next attempt begins with a different situation or a reset set of run resources. Nintendo describes the appeal as a combination of high stakes, persistence and adaptation: you learn from what killed you, then use that knowledge on the next attempt.

“Permadeath” does not necessarily mean that absolutely everything is erased. The three games in this guide preserve different kinds of progress. A run can be lost while a character upgrade, an unlocked route, a family improvement or a story beat remains available. That retained progress is what makes these games suitable for beginners who dislike the idea of a completely blank restart.

Roguelike versus rogue-lite

PlayStation’s distinction is useful: a traditional roguelike resets progress after failure, while a rogue-lite retains some progression, such as upgraded statistics or unlocked weapons and abilities. In ordinary conversation, people also use “roguelike” as a broad label for both. Hades, Rogue Legacy 2 and Dead Cells fit the broader permadeath family, but the persistent systems described below make them rogue-lites or rogue-lite-leaning games for practical purposes.

Permanent progress versus run-only power

Persistent upgrades survive the death screen and change later attempts. Examples in this guide include Hades’ permanent progression and God Mode, Rogue Legacy 2’s manor, heirs and heirlooms, and Dead Cells’ permanent unlocks and route access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run-only rewards are different. A weapon, boon, pile of gold or other bonus obtained during one attempt may improve that attempt without being guaranteed for the next one. When comparing games, ask whether an upgrade changes your future starting point or merely makes the current run stronger. That distinction matters more to a beginner than the size of an individual in-run bonus.

How to choose your first game

Pick Hades for the gentlest learning curve

Hades is the broadest recommendation because it gives you several forms of feedback after a loss. You can improve mechanically, advance the story, spend permanent progression and, if the combat remains too punishing, turn on God Mode. Supergiant Games says the project was designed to open the thrills of rogue-like games to more players. That goal is visible in the way failure keeps producing useful information rather than simply deleting an attempt.

Pick Rogue Legacy 2 when inheritance is the point

Rogue Legacy 2 makes the idea of “the next attempt is stronger” unusually literal. You return as a new heir, expand a family manor and collect permanent heirlooms and abilities. Its progression system is the attraction rather than a side benefit. If you enjoy improving a long-term build more than chasing a perfect individual run, this is the clearest match.

Pick Dead Cells when combat practice is the point

Dead Cells is the most demanding recommendation for a newcomer because it expects you to learn from no-checkpoint runs. Motion Twin describes pattern-based 2D “souls-lite combat” with the threat of permadeath always present. Permanent upgrades and newly available routes make future escapes more plausible, but the game still asks you to execute under pressure. Choose it when precise movement, enemy patterns and exploration sound satisfying rather than intimidating.

Hades: best first permadeath game for most beginners

Why it works for a first attempt

Hades combines fast-paced action with unusually explicit beginner support. It includes permanent progression, difficulty modifiers and an always-available God Mode. God Mode increases damage resistance after each death, so the assist grows as you continue to struggle. You do not have to decide at the start that you are playing an “easy” version forever; you can enable the help when needed and continue learning the same encounters.

The game also makes repeated attempts narratively meaningful. Story scenes continue between runs, turning a failed escape into character-driven Greek-myth storytelling rather than a simple reset. That structure is valuable for a beginner who needs a reason to make one more attempt after losing late in a run.

What persists

  • Permanent progression remains available after a failed run.
  • God Mode’s damage resistance persists and increases after subsequent deaths, giving the assist a gradual catch-up effect.
  • Story progress continues between attempts, so failure can unlock new conversations or narrative developments.

Weapons, boons, gold and similar run-only rewards should be treated separately from those permanent systems. They help you reach the end of a particular attempt, but they are not the same as an upgrade that changes your long-term starting position.

How to use its safety nets

  1. Play several attempts before judging your ability. Early deaths provide information about enemy timing, room layouts and the value of different choices. A single failed run is not a reliable measure of whether the game suits you.
  2. Spend permanent resources before chasing a flawless run. The long-term systems exist to make future attempts more capable. Holding every resource for an imaginary perfect build delays the help the game is designed to provide.
  3. Enable God Mode when damage, not decision-making, is stopping progress. Its resistance bonus grows after each death, so it is particularly useful if you understand what to do but cannot survive long enough to execute it.
  4. Use the story as a progress marker. If a run ends, check what narrative or permanent options became available before immediately starting again. Hades deliberately ties the hub between runs to continued advancement.

Who should choose Hades

Choose Hades if you want your first permadeath game to explain itself through multiple feedback channels: combat practice, permanent upgrades, optional damage assistance and an unfolding story. It is also the best fit if the phrase “dying still makes progress” is what attracted you to the genre.

Supergiant Games reports that more than 50 publications named Hades their 2020 Game of the Year. That recognition does not prove that every beginner will prefer it, but it helps explain why the game is often used as an entry point: its run structure is paired with a polished narrative and broad accessibility goals.

Rogue Legacy 2: best for family inheritance and permanent upgrades

The central idea

Cellar Door Games calls Rogue Legacy 2 a “genealogical rogue-LITE.” Each failed attempt leads to a new heir, so the game turns death into a family succession rather than a simple restart. The family manor grows over time, heirs leave persistent changes, and permanent heirloom abilities expand what future characters can do.

This design makes the long-term upgrade path easy to understand. You are not merely trying to keep one character alive; you are investing in a lineage. A disappointing run can still reveal a useful heir, add a manor improvement or unlock an ability that makes the next generation more capable.

What persists

  • The family manor: its growth represents lasting improvements between attempts.
  • Heirs: each new character continues the family’s overall development even though the previous run ended.
  • Heirlooms: permanent abilities change what later heirs can access or accomplish.
  • Level-up progression: the game provides an extensive system for investing in long-term strength.

Classes, traits, weapons and biomes vary the moment-to-moment experience. Those choices shape an individual heir and run; they should not be confused with the manor and heirloom systems that remain part of the broader family progression.

Two ways to approach difficulty

Rogue Legacy 2 accommodates different attitudes toward risk. Its documented options include a “go hard and fast” approach and a “take it slow and steady” approach. The first suits players who want to push into dangerous areas quickly and accept more failed heirs. The second suits beginners who would rather build power and familiarity before taking on harder regions.

The game also offers additional ways for struggling players to progress. That matters because a genealogical system can otherwise feel like a treadmill: if every heir dies at the same obstacle, the family would appear stuck. The level-up structure and extra progression options are intended to prevent that dead end.

A practical first-session plan

  1. Inspect the available heir choices. Treat class, traits and equipment as a learning opportunity, not merely as a search for the strongest combination.
  2. Invest in the manor regularly. Persistent estate improvements are the foundation of future attempts, so delaying them leaves later heirs weaker than necessary.
  3. Unlock and use heirlooms deliberately. Permanent abilities can change exploration or combat options; practice the new capability before judging whether it suits your style.
  4. Choose a pace that matches your goal. Push quickly when you want to test a route, or take a slower approach when your priority is to accumulate power and learn the biome.
  5. Measure success by family progress. A run that fails before a boss can still be successful if it improves the manor, creates a useful heir or advances an heirloom path.

Who should choose Rogue Legacy 2

Choose Rogue Legacy 2 if the phrase “each death helps the next character” is more appealing than a story-driven hub. It is the strongest match for players who want permanent upgrades to be visible, numerous and central to the game’s identity. The family framing also gives a failed run a clear emotional and mechanical consequence without pretending that the individual heir survived.

Dead Cells: best for combat-first learners

Why it feels harder

Dead Cells is built around no-checkpoint runs and pattern-based combat. Motion Twin describes the objective as mastering 2D “souls-lite combat” while the threat of permadeath remains present. You must recognize enemy behavior, react to attack patterns and make route decisions without relying on a nearby checkpoint after every mistake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That structure can be demanding for a beginner, but it is also unusually clear. If you die, you know the next attempt is an opportunity to apply a specific lesson: avoid a telegraphed attack, change your route, or use a different approach to an encounter. The game’s pressure is part of the learning method rather than an incidental punishment.

What persists

  • Permanent unlocks: future attempts gain access to tools or options that were not available at the start.
  • Route progression: deaths can help unlock new levels, creating additional paths through later runs.
  • Exploration knowledge: understanding nonlinear areas and their connections improves future decisions even when the current run ends.

PlayStation’s editorial description notes that permanent upgrades improve your chances of escaping. These upgrades do not remove the need to learn combat patterns; they increase the set of options available when you try again.

How to learn without checkpoints

  1. Study one enemy pattern at a time. Focus on the timing and warning for the enemy that is currently ending your runs instead of trying to master every biome simultaneously.
  2. Use each route as a lesson. Dead Cells has nonlinear progression, so a different level path can provide new information or a more suitable challenge for your current skill.
  3. Prioritize permanent unlocks when available. A tool that remains accessible on later attempts has more long-term value than a temporary advantage that disappears at death.
  4. Separate execution mistakes from route mistakes. If you know how an encounter works but lack the resources to survive it, reconsider your path. If the route is sound but your timing fails, practice the pattern.
  5. Expect repetition. The absence of checkpoints means improvement is measured across complete attempts, not by quick reloads after every error.

Who should choose Dead Cells

Choose Dead Cells when the appeal of a permadeath game is the combat itself. It is a good fit for players who enjoy demanding 2D action, exploration and the satisfaction of recognizing patterns. It is less suitable as a first choice if you need an explicit difficulty assist or want story scenes to provide the main reward after a failed run.

A beginner’s checklist for any permadeath game

Before the first run

  • Decide what kind of persistence you want: story and adjustable difficulty, family and upgrade depth, or combat and route mastery.
  • Assume that the first attempts are tutorials delivered through play. Early failure is expected evidence about the system, not proof that you chose badly.
  • Identify which rewards are permanent and which disappear at death. Spend or prioritize the permanent layer first when the game makes that possible.

After a failed run

  1. Name the cause of death. Was it a missed attack pattern, an overly ambitious route, poor equipment choices or insufficient long-term investment?
  2. Make one change. Altering everything at once hides which decision improved your result.
  3. Collect the persistent reward. Check for story scenes, manor investments, heirlooms, unlocks or route access before beginning another attempt.
  4. Choose the next objective. A good objective can be small: survive one more room, learn one enemy, reach a new biome or unlock one permanent option.

When to use assistance

Using a built-in assist does not invalidate the genre. Hades’ God Mode is specifically designed to make the player more resilient and becomes a little stronger after each death. In Rogue Legacy 2, choosing a slower pace or using its additional progression options serves a similar purpose. Dead Cells offers less explicit cushioning, so the equivalent adjustment is often choosing a different route and concentrating on permanent unlocks. The right test is whether the game remains engaging while you are learning, not whether every run is equally difficult.

Rogue Legacy 2 press materials list Steam, Epic, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation. The supplied platform information does not establish a complete current catalog for Dead Cells, although PlayStation editorial material covers the game. Check the storefront for your device and edition rather than assuming that a version on one platform guarantees identical availability elsewhere.

Common mistakes new players make

Treating every death as wasted time

That mindset ignores the persistent layer. In Hades, a death can advance the story or strengthen God Mode. In Rogue Legacy 2, it can improve the family estate or produce a useful heir. In Dead Cells, it can contribute to permanent unlocks and route knowledge. If a run ends without a permanent reward, it can still provide a combat or navigation lesson, but the three games differ in how visibly they record that progress.

Chasing a perfect build too early

Run-only weapons, boons, gold and other bonuses are attractive because they can make the current attempt feel powerful. They are not substitutes for permanent progression. Beginners usually learn faster by testing imperfect combinations and spending long-term resources than by restarting repeatedly in search of an ideal opening.

Choosing the wrong difficulty expectation

Hades is the safest recommendation when you want explicit help. Rogue Legacy 2 is appropriate when you enjoy building strength over several heirs. Dead Cells is appropriate when you want the game to demand pattern learning and precise execution. None is universally easiest; “beginner-friendly” depends on whether assistance, progression depth or combat challenge is what you need.

Confusing a new route with a guaranteed shortcut

Dead Cells’ nonlinear progression and unlocked levels increase your options, not your certainty of success. A new route may suit your current abilities or teach a different lesson, but it still requires combat execution. The same principle applies to Rogue Legacy 2’s biomes and Hades’ run choices: more options create more decisions rather than removing the need to learn.

Final verdict

Buy Hades first if you want one recommendation that covers the widest range of beginners. Its permanent progression, growing God Mode and story between runs make failure productive in several ways. Buy Rogue Legacy 2 if persistent upgrades and family inheritance are the feature you care about most. Buy Dead Cells if your priority is mastering demanding 2D combat and exploring nonlinear routes despite no checkpoints.
