Apple Preview is the right starting point for annotating, signing, filling forms and rearranging pages. It does not rewrite existing PDF text. For true text or image editing, OCR of scans or permanent redaction, use a dedicated editor such as PDF Expert, PDFgear, Foxit PDF Editor, Nitro PDF, Wondershare PDFelement, ABBYY FineReader PDF or Adobe Acrobat. Your choice then depends on whether you need Mac-only or cross-platform access and whether you prefer a free app, an annual subscription or a lifetime license.
The short answer
There is no single winner for every Mac user. Preview handles routine markup without an extra purchase. PDF Expert is a Mac-focused paid editor with a Mac-only lifetime option or an annual plan that adds future updates and mobile support. PDFgear presents itself as a free alternative with OCR, forms, signatures and permanent redaction, although those capabilities are vendor claims rather than independent test results. Foxit and Adobe Acrobat target professional workflows, while Nitro and PDFelement are useful when Windows or iOS support matters. ABBYY FineReader is most compelling when document scanning and OCR are the main job.

Feature descriptions in this table come from the products’ published pages and Macworld or PCWorld comparisons. They are not a uniform independent benchmark, so the table should guide your shortlist rather than imply that one app is fastest or most accurate in every test.
First decide whether you need markup or editing
Markup leaves the original page intact
Highlighting, underlining, drawing, adding a text box, inserting a note, stamping a page or placing a signature are annotation tasks. Preview is particularly good at these jobs. You can also rotate, delete, insert and reorder pages, crop a page, and export a copy. The annotations sit on top of the page; they do not replace the words that were originally printed into the PDF.
#1 Best Overall
- Create and edit PDFs. Collaborate with ease. E-sign documents and collect signatures. Get everything done in one app, wherever you go.
- Edit text and images without jumping to another app.
- E-sign documents or request e-signatures on any device. Recipients don’t need to log in to e-sign.
- Convert PDFs to editable Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents.
- Share PDFs for collaboration. Commenting features make it easy for reviewers to comment, mark up, and annotate.
Editing changes the PDF’s underlying content
If you must correct a name, replace a paragraph, change a number in a table or move an image that is already part of the page, you need an editor that explicitly supports existing-text and image editing. Preview does not provide that function. Dedicated products use text boxes, font matching and object selection to modify the content, but complex layouts can reflow. Keep the original file and inspect every changed page before distributing the result.
Preview: the sensible first stop on every Mac
Preview is already included with macOS, so it is the lowest-friction option for most personal and school paperwork. Apple’s user guide is the authoritative place to check labels and capabilities for your macOS release; Apple changes some controls between versions.
- Open the PDF. Double-click it in Finder or choose File > Open in Preview.
- Show the markup controls. Choose View > Show Markup Toolbar. Use the selection, drawing, shape, text, note and highlight tools as needed.
- Fill a form. Click a form field and type. If the document is a flat scan with no fields, add text boxes instead; those boxes are annotations, not newly created interactive fields.
- Add a signature. Select the signature tool, create a signature with the trackpad, camera or an imported image, then place and resize it.
- Handle pages. Choose View > Thumbnails to drag pages into a new order, delete unwanted pages, or drag pages between open PDF windows.
- Save safely. Use File > Duplicate before making irreversible changes, then export a copy when you need a different filename or format.
Preview is a poor fit when you need to search a scanned contract, change the wording inside a paragraph, create a reusable web form or guarantee that a sensitive passage has been permanently removed. Move to a dedicated editor for those requirements.

Macworld describes PDF Expert as a Mac-focused editor with text and image editing, signing, forms, redaction, conversion, OCR and AI document tools. Its licensing has an important split: the lifetime license is Mac-only, while the annual plan includes future updates and mobile support. Prices and regional availability change, so confirm the current offer before buying.
Choose it when you want a polished Mac workflow and do not need Windows on the same license. If you expect to edit on an iPhone or iPad, the annual plan is the relevant option; do not assume the lifetime purchase includes mobile access.
PDFgear for Mac: broad tools with vendor-described free access
PDFgear’s Mac page advertises editing, form filling and creation, signatures, OCR for a full scanned PDF and a redaction tool that it says permanently removes selected content. It also states that most editing runs locally on the Mac, while AI features and online services need an internet connection.
Those are vendor statements, not an independent audit of OCR accuracy, privacy or redaction strength. The page accessed for this guide listed macOS 10.14 as the minimum requirement; check the current system requirement because it may have changed. For confidential work, test the redaction process on a duplicate and verify that hidden text, metadata and copy-and-paste cannot reveal the removed material.

Adobe Acrobat: the broad subscription benchmark
Adobe’s US product page accessed on October 13, 2026 listed Standard at US$14.99 per month and Pro at US$19.99 per month, each annual billed monthly. These are geography- and date-specific prices that can change with billing terms or promotions.
Acrobat Pro includes tools for creating and editing PDFs, signing, redacting, creating web forms and turning scans into editable PDFs. PCWorld named Acrobat Pro its overall pick in a 2026 roundup and described it as feature-rich. Standard and Pro are not interchangeable: check whether your workflow needs Pro-only redaction, scan conversion or advanced form features before subscribing.
Foxit PDF Editor: professional controls and an annual commitment
Macworld positions Foxit as a professional or business-oriented choice with text and image editing, conversion, OCR, redaction, security and accessibility tools. It uses an annual contract model, and the interface is denser than the simplest Mac apps. Mobile access differs by plan, so confirm that the plan you select covers the devices and features your team actually uses.
Foxit is worth considering when accessibility checks, security policies and document conversion are as important as basic editing. It is less attractive if you only need occasional markup and do not want an annual commitment.

Nitro PDF: check the exact tier before relying on OCR
Nitro’s current official product information says its editor supports Mac, Windows and iOS, with editing, conversion, security, signing and OCR-related capabilities. However, Macworld’s comparison table lists Nitro PDF Pro with text editing and signing but no OCR. The discrepancy may reflect a different version, product tier or platform build. Verify the current Mac plan and its OCR feature list before purchasing for scanned-document work.
Nitro is a practical shortlist candidate when the same files must move among Mac, Windows and iOS. Treat cross-platform coverage as a plan-level detail rather than assuming every license includes every device.
Wondershare PDFelement: flexible cross-platform licensing
Macworld lists PDFelement as a cross-platform editor with text editing, OCR, annotations and forms. Licensing can be single-platform or cross-platform, which helps households and teams that use more than one operating system. The review also notes that some sidebar controls can be difficult to identify and that certain edits may be unpredictable. Those observations describe that review’s experience, not a guarantee that every document will behave the same way.

- Add effects like echo, amplification, noise reduction, normalize, equalizer, envelope, reverb, echo, reverse and more

- Sound editing functions include cut, copy, paste, delete, insert, silence, auto-trim and more
- Integrated VST plugin support gives professionals access to thousands of additional tools and effects
Keep a versioned original, save frequently and inspect page breaks when editing a complex layout. PDFelement makes more sense than a Mac-only license when device coverage is part of the buying decision.
ABBYY FineReader PDF: choose it for scanning first
Macworld highlights ABBYY FineReader’s OCR accuracy and conversion strengths and positions it for digitizing documents. It may offer fewer broad editing tools than similarly priced applications. Select it when turning paper or image-only PDFs into usable text is the central task; choose a broader editor if you also need extensive layout editing, forms and redaction in the same application.
OCR: a separate workflow from ordinary PDF editing
A scanned PDF is usually a set of page images. You can draw on it, but search, copy and text replacement require optical character recognition. OCR can introduce errors in names, decimal points, tables and accented characters, so treat the result as a draft that needs visual and textual checking.
- Work on a copy. Preserve the untouched scan as your evidence file.
- Run OCR in the editor. Choose the scan or OCR command and select the document language when the app offers that option.
- Review every page. Search for likely trouble spots such as dates, account numbers, columns and signatures. Compare recognized text with the image.
- Export deliberately. Decide whether you need a searchable image PDF, editable text blocks or a separate text file; these outputs are not equivalent.
- Protect the source. Keep the original scan and record which OCR version produced the working copy.
Preview’s Live Text availability can make text selectable in supported images, but that is not the same as a full scanned-PDF editing workflow. PDFgear, Acrobat, Foxit, PDFelement and ABBYY advertise OCR, while Nitro’s published descriptions should be checked for the precise Mac tier.
Redaction and security: make removal verifiable
Drawing a black rectangle over sensitive information is not redaction. It can leave the original text searchable or copyable underneath. Use an editor’s dedicated redaction command, apply it, save a new file and test the result before sharing. PDFgear specifically says its redaction tool permanently removes selected content, but that statement should still be verified on a duplicate.

- Save or export a flattened copy according to the editor’s instructions.

- Inspect document properties and attachments for information that should not leave your organization.
- Use encryption or a separate secure transfer method when the recipient or policy requires it.
No product description in the available comparisons is a substitute for your own verification on the document type and macOS version you use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Forms and signatures: know what the recipient needs
Preview can fill existing fields and place a handwritten or imported signature. Dedicated editors add form creation, field editing, validation and reusable templates. If a recipient needs a PDF that others can fill repeatedly, create actual interactive fields rather than placing text boxes over a static page.

A visible signature image is not automatically a certificate-based digital signature. For contracts or regulated workflows, ask the recipient which signature standard and audit trail they accept, then choose a product and plan that explicitly supports it.
Mac-only versus cross-platform licensing
| Need | What to verify | Likely shortlist |
|---|---|---|
| Only one Mac, occasional markup | No subscription and no text editing required | Preview |
| Mac-native editing | Whether mobile access is included in the chosen license | PDF Expert |
| Free broad feature set | Current system requirement, local versus online processing and vendor claims | PDFgear |
| Mac, Windows and iOS | Exact device rights and OCR availability by tier | Nitro PDF or PDFelement |
| Professional security, accessibility and conversion | Annual price, mobile rights and required business controls | Foxit or Acrobat |
| Paper-to-text conversion | Language support, recognition quality and editing breadth | ABBYY FineReader or an OCR-capable editor |
Lifetime, annual and subscription labels are not equivalent promises. A lifetime license commonly means continued use of a specific major version, not unlimited future upgrades. Annual plans may include updates or mobile apps that a perpetual purchase does not. Read the current terms for your country before checkout.
A practical decision path
- List the real operations. Separate markup, page organization, existing-content editing, OCR, redaction, form creation and signatures.
- Identify every device. Include a work Windows PC, an iPhone or an iPad if files must travel with you.
- Choose the license boundary. Decide whether a free included app, a one-time Mac license or an annual subscription fits your update and support expectations.
- Test a representative file. Use a scan with tables, a form with multiple fields and a document containing images. Check output, not just the toolbar.
- Verify security requirements. Test redaction and inspect metadata before using the editor for confidential material.
- Confirm current terms. Product tiers, prices, minimum macOS versions and mobile rights change; check the seller’s current page immediately before purchase.
Common problems and fixes
“I can highlight text but cannot replace it.”
You are using annotation tools. Open the PDF in an editor that supports existing-text editing, or recreate the page in a source application when the layout is too complex for reliable PDF editing.
“The scan looks fine but search finds nothing.”
The file is probably image-only. Run OCR, select the correct language, then proofread names, numbers and tables. Save the searchable result separately from the original scan.
“The redacted text reappears when I copy and paste.”
The content was covered, not removed. Return to the original, use the dedicated redaction workflow, export a new file and retest search, selection and copying.
“The edited PDF changes when opened elsewhere.”
Fonts, forms, annotations and unsupported features can render differently between applications. Flatten only when appropriate, embed fonts when offered, and open the exported file in the recipient’s expected viewer.
“OCR is missing in my Nitro installation.”
Check the exact Mac product tier and version. Published descriptions conflict: Nitro’s official page mentions OCR-related capabilities, while Macworld’s table lists no OCR for Nitro PDF Pro. Do not assume the feature is included without confirming the current plan.
“A lifetime purchase does not work on my phone.”
Check the license scope. PDF Expert’s lifetime option is Mac-only; its annual plan includes mobile support. Other products also separate mobile rights by plan.
Bottom line by reader type
- Need annotations, signatures, forms and page management: start with Preview.
- Need a Mac-focused editor: compare PDF Expert’s lifetime and annual terms.
- Want a broad no-cost feature set: evaluate PDFgear, while independently testing OCR and redaction.
- Need business conversion, accessibility or security controls: compare Foxit and Acrobat plans.
- Need Mac, Windows and iOS coverage: inspect Nitro and PDFelement licensing and feature tiers.
- Primarily digitize paper: put ABBYY FineReader and OCR-capable alternatives on the shortlist.
The best alternative to PDF Expert is therefore task-specific: Preview for markup, a dedicated editor for changing content, an OCR-focused tool for scans, and a cross-platform plan when your devices extend beyond the Mac.
