Does Gears of War: E-Day require an SSD?
Yes. Steam lists an SSD and 115 GB of available capacity in both tiers. Treat that as a compatibility requirement, not as a promised frames-per-second upgrade. An SSD can help the game meet its loading and asset-streaming assumptions, but the available material does not establish that replacing a working SSD increases average FPS.
The official multiplayer beta FAQ also warned that hard-disk drives were unsupported and could cause long loading, missing assets, stutter and crashes. That warning was for the beta, but it explains why an HDD is a poor troubleshooting choice for the released game. Leave additional free space for Windows, shader data and updates rather than filling the drive to its limit.
Set a target before changing graphics
Choose the outcome you want first. Select the display’s native resolution if image clarity is the priority, or choose a lower render resolution or an upscaling mode if maintaining a higher frame rate matters more. Set a practical frame-rate goal that your monitor and hardware can sustain instead of chasing a peak number that produces uneven frame pacing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Resolution: Decide whether you are targeting 1920×1080, 2560×1440, 3840×2160 or the panel’s actual native mode.
- Frame-rate goal: Pick a sustainable target appropriate to the display, such as a capped value that remains stable during heavy scenes.
- Latency tolerance: Competitive play generally makes responsiveness and consistent frame times more important than a larger but unstable FPS counter.
- Image-quality floor: Decide how much reconstruction, softness or temporal artifacting you are willing to accept before enabling an aggressive performance mode.
Write these choices down. They give every later setting change a consistent pass/fail test.
Use the built-in benchmark as your baseline
The Steam listing advertises an in-game benchmark. Use it to make decisions on your own PC rather than copying a preset designed for another graphics card or patch.
- Update Windows and install the current driver for your GPU from its manufacturer. Do not treat the beta FAQ’s old driver numbers as current requirements.
- Close overlays, browsers and background workloads that could change the result. Keep the same power mode, display mode and resolution for every run.
- Choose your target resolution and frame-rate goal, then run the benchmark with the game’s initial settings.
- Record the average result and any displayed low-percentile or minimum figure. Also note visible stutter, shader-compilation pauses, image softness and input response.
- Change one graphics, resolution, upscaling or frame-generation option.
- Run the same benchmark again under the same conditions. Keep the change only if it improves your target without unacceptable image-quality or latency costs.
- Repeat until the target is met, then test a real campaign or multiplayer session. A benchmark is controlled, but gameplay can contain different streaming, effects and CPU loads.
This is a practical tuning method, not an official claim that any specific option produces a measured gain. Keep a small note of each change so you can undo it after a patch or driver update.

Best resolution and upscaling choices
Start with native resolution when performance allows
Native rendering avoids reconstruction artifacts and is the clearest reference for judging other modes. If the benchmark already meets your target with acceptable frame pacing, keep native resolution and adjust other options only when necessary.
Compare the supported upscalers at your target resolution
The PC listing names NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 and AMD FSR “Redstone.” It also advertises Variable Rate Shading. Availability and quality depend on the GPU, driver, game build and display; the listing does not promise identical support across all cards.
Compare modes at the resolution you actually intend to play. Examine thin geometry, distant fences, motion, foliage, particles and HUD text. A mode that raises the displayed FPS but introduces distracting shimmer or blur may not be the best choice for you. Record frame pacing and responsiveness as well as the average counter.
- Quality-oriented mode: Use this first when you need a modest performance lift while preserving detail.
- Balanced or performance-oriented mode: Consider it only if the quality mode misses your target; inspect motion and fine detail carefully.
- Native mode: Keep it as your image-quality reference and return to it after every major driver or patch change.
Do not assume an upscaler is available simply because another card supports it. Use the options exposed by the game for your hardware and verify that the output resolution and sharpening controls are doing what you expect.
Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation
The listing advertises optional Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation on supported hardware. These technologies can increase the number of displayed frames by generating intermediate images; they do not make the underlying game simulation or input sampling run at the same rate as the displayed counter.
Enable them only after the base render rate is reasonably stable. Compare camera motion, ghosting, HUD behavior and controls with the feature off. A higher displayed number is not automatically a more responsive experience. Support depends on compatible hardware and display, and the official listing does not establish one universal setting for every GPU.

- Measure the native or upscaled base frame rate first.
- Check for new artifacts around moving characters, weapons, particles and UI elements.
- Judge mouse or controller response during actual play, not only in the benchmark.
- Keep the feature disabled if artifacts or latency outweigh the smoother presentation.
Variable Rate Shading
Variable Rate Shading (VRS) is listed as a PC feature. It can reduce shading work in areas where full per-pixel detail is less visible, but the benefit depends on the scene and the GPU. Compare it with the same benchmark pass and inspect edges, lighting and motion. If the game exposes a quality or strength control, change only that control between runs so you can identify its real effect on your system.
What to do with individual quality settings
No official source reviewed publishes a setting-by-setting cost ranking for textures, shadows, ray tracing or post-processing, so do not treat an internet preset as a measured universal answer. Use a controlled order that protects image quality and makes each trade-off visible.
Textures and texture streaming
Keep textures as high as your GPU memory and target resolution can handle without hitching. If you see streaming delays or stutter, check storage, background memory use and VRAM pressure before assuming a texture slider alone is the cause. The game still requires an SSD regardless of texture quality.
Shadows, lighting and ray tracing
These options can be visually expensive in many games, but E-Day’s official material does not identify which one costs the most on a particular card. Lower one option, rerun the benchmark and compare shadow detail, contact areas and frame pacing. Keep ray tracing enabled only when your card is supported and the resulting performance meets your goal.
Effects and post-processing
Lower effects or post-processing only after establishing a baseline. Check explosions, smoke, motion blur, depth of field and film-grain changes in a real level, because a benchmark may not contain every effect combination. Disable a feature when it harms clarity or causes discomfort, not merely because a generic guide labels it expensive.
View distance and geometry
Use the benchmark to determine whether distant geometry is limiting your target. Reducing view distance can make large environments look less consistent, so compare the visual result from the same camera path before keeping the change.

Advanced Shader Delivery: faster startup, not more FPS
Microsoft DirectX describes Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) as a way to deliver precompiled shaders with the game download. Microsoft reports approximately 95% less shader compilation time on supported setups. That figure concerns compilation time, not a 95% increase in gameplay FPS.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchMicrosoft’s October 1, 2026 DirectX post says Windows 11 24H2 or newer is required for ASD and lists additional hardware and driver support conditions. It also instructs players to install the Xbox PC app before downloading the game to experience ASD. If your system is eligible, follow the current Microsoft instructions and let the initial preparation complete before judging startup stutter.
ASD is useful for reducing first-launch shader work and related startup pauses. It does not replace an adequate GPU, CPU, RAM configuration or SSD, and it does not make every in-game frame render faster.
Storage, drivers and system checks before lowering quality
- Confirm free space: Keep at least the required 115 GB available on the SSD and leave room for updates.
- Use DirectX 12: Both published requirement tiers specify DirectX 12.
- Update drivers carefully: Install a current driver for your exact GPU. Beta-era driver version advice is historical and should not be copied as a present-day requirement.
- Check Windows eligibility: Verify the exact Windows build, especially if you want ASD, which requires Windows 11 24H2 or newer according to Microsoft.
- Watch memory and thermals: Close unnecessary applications and check for thermal throttling or sustained clock drops during the benchmark.
- Keep ReBAR in mind for Intel Arc: The beta FAQ warned that Arc A580 and B580 performance could be significantly reduced when Resizable BAR was disabled. Check your motherboard and current Intel documentation rather than relying on beta-specific instructions.
How to get more FPS when the benchmark misses your target
- Verify that the PC reaches at least the published minimum tier, including ray-tracing capability, RAM, Windows version and SSD capacity.
- Lower output resolution or select a supported upscaling quality mode, then benchmark again.
- Test Frame Generation only after the base frame rate is stable, and reject it if latency or artifacts are unacceptable.
- Use one-at-a-time tests for shadows, ray tracing, effects, view distance and other quality controls. Keep a setting only when the measured result and image quality justify it.
- If the GPU is below the desired tier, compare an upgrade against the recommended GPU class while checking power, case clearance, connectors and current driver support. The published table does not guarantee a specific resolution or preset from any upgrade.
- If the result is limited by the processor rather than the GPU, reduce CPU-heavy scene settings where available and close background workloads before changing image-quality options.
Do not judge success from a single peak FPS reading. A change that raises the average but worsens low frame rates, pacing or controls may feel worse during combat.

Long first launch or shader pauses
Allow shader preparation to finish, verify that the game is on an SSD and check whether your system meets ASD’s Windows 11 24H2 and hardware conditions. ASD targets compilation time; it is not a general FPS booster.
Stutter, missing assets or crashes while loading
Confirm the game is installed on an SSD with sufficient free space. The beta FAQ associated HDD use with loading, missing assets, stutter and crashes. Then update the game and GPU driver, close background disk-heavy applications and rerun the benchmark.

Low FPS despite meeting recommended specifications
Recommended hardware is a tier, not a guaranteed performance preset. Check resolution, ray tracing, upscaling mode, thermals, background tasks and driver state. Compare one change at a time and test an actual level after the benchmark.
High displayed FPS but sluggish controls
Disable Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation temporarily and compare the base render rate and input response. Check the display’s refresh mode and use a stable frame-rate target instead of the highest displayed number.
Intel Arc performance is unexpectedly poor
Check whether Resizable BAR is enabled in the motherboard firmware and confirm current Intel guidance. The beta FAQ specifically warned of significantly reduced Arc A580/B580 performance with ReBAR disabled; do not assume that old beta driver versions are still the right fix.

| Situation | First check | Likely next step |
|---|---|---|
| HDD installation or less than 115 GB free | Storage requirement | Move the installation to a compatible SSD with enough free capacity; do not promise an FPS increase from the drive alone. |
| GPU below the minimum ray-tracing-capable tier | Graphics-card model and feature support | Consider a supported GPU upgrade after checking power supply, connectors, clearance and current pricing. |
| 12 GB RAM and frequent streaming or background pressure | Memory use during the benchmark | Close background applications or consider moving toward the 16 GB recommended tier. |
| CPU below the minimum or frequent CPU-limited dips | Per-core utilization and frame-time behavior | Evaluate a platform or processor upgrade; lowering resolution may not fix a CPU limit. |
| Meets recommended tier but misses a high-resolution target | Resolution, upscaling and ray-tracing choices | Compare a quality upscaler, lower-cost lighting options and a realistic frame-rate cap before replacing hardware. |
Use the actual GPU and CPU model, memory, operating-system build, SSD status, intended resolution and budget when comparing parts. No model can be called the universally best upgrade without current, reproducible testing across patches and settings.
A repeatable profile-building routine
- Create a native-resolution baseline with frame generation disabled.
- Save the benchmark result and a short note about image quality, frame pacing and controls.
- Test the available upscalers at their quality-oriented modes.
- Test a lower quality mode only if the target is still missed.
- Evaluate VRS and individual quality settings one at a time.
- Try Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation last, comparing latency and artifacts.
- Play a representative mission or multiplayer match, then keep the profile that remains stable outside the benchmark.
- Recheck after major patches, driver updates or Windows changes.
This approach produces a setting profile tied to your hardware and priorities without pretending that one preset works for every E-Day PC.
