For smoother gameplay, start by choosing a realistic resolution and frame-rate target, then test the game’s supported DLSS or FSR options. If performance still falls short, reduce demanding effects such as ray tracing and consider a frame-rate cap. There is no universal preset: the best combination depends on the game, GPU, display, and your preference for image quality versus responsiveness.
Start with your display and performance target
Note your display’s resolution and refresh rate, then decide what level of performance feels smooth to you in the game. A higher output resolution asks the GPU to render more pixels, but the resulting frame rate depends on the game and hardware—not on resolution alone.

For scale, NVIDIA’s game-specific Control graphics and performance guide says 2560×1440 has 77% more pixels than 1920×1080. That is a pixel-count comparison, not a claim that frame rate drops by 77%. Treat it as a reason to test resolution when performance is limited, not as a prediction of your results.

Try the game’s supported upscaling
If the game offers DLSS or FSR, test its available modes before settling on lower image-quality settings. These technologies require support from the game and compatible hardware or software; they are not universal switches. Their modes balance image detail against performance, and the best choice varies by title and system.

AMD says FSR 3.1 options, where supported, can be enabled through a game’s graphics or video menu. See AMD’s FSR technologies overview for feature and support details. NVIDIA’s DLSS games and technology guide gives example mode guidance by output resolution; use it as a starting point rather than a guarantee for every game or GPU.
Compare each mode in the actual game, ideally in a scene with movement and effects. Look for both steadier performance and image problems such as softness or distracting artifacts in motion. Change one option at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.

If the game supports FSR
When a title has an in-game FSR option, AMD recommends using that integration instead of Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), its driver-level upscaling feature. The game-specific implementation may produce better upscaling results. AMD explains the distinction in its Radeon Super Resolution configuration guide.
Reduce demanding visual effects selectively
If resolution and upscaling choices are not enough, test costly effects one at a time. Ray tracing is a reasonable setting to try reducing or turning off, particularly at higher resolutions. NVIDIA’s Control guide discusses the additional demands of ray tracing at higher resolutions, but it is specific to Control; it does not establish that ray tracing is the most expensive setting in every dark fantasy game.

- POWERHOUSE 8-CORE GAMING PERFORMANCE — Driven by the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F with 8 cores and 16 threads, boosting up to 5.0 GHz for smooth, responsive gameplay and the ability to handle AAA titles, streaming, and background tasks all at once
- NEXT-GEN BLACKWELL ARCHITECTURE — The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 is powered by NVIDIA's cutting-edge Blackwell GPU architecture, delivering a massive generational leap in rasterization and ray tracing performance so you can experience your games the way they were meant to be played.
- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. *MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
- Cool While Gaming: In conjunction with an ARGB fan Air Cooler, the Codex R2 features four system cooling fans; three in the front and one in the rear to pull in cool air and push heat out of the PC.
- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
Decide whether the visual effect is worth its performance cost to you. Compare the game’s frame-rate consistency and image quality before and after the change, using the same scene where practical. If turning off ray tracing makes little difference, restore it and test another demanding option rather than assuming the same setting is responsible in every title.
Use a frame-rate cap when it suits your display
A frame-rate cap can be useful when the game renders well above the range your display can use. AMD documents Frame Rate Target Control (FRTC) as a way to set a maximum in applicable full-screen games. AMD notes that limiting excess frame rates can reduce GPU power use, heat, and fan speeds in some situations. See AMD’s Radeon settings guide for its driver feature information.

There is no single cap that fits every display and game. Choose a limit with your display’s refresh rate and the game’s performance stability in mind, then check whether frame pacing feels better. If a cap makes play feel less responsive or exposes dips more clearly, adjust or remove it.

Use a consistent scene or gameplay segment to judge each change. Compare the result on the factors that matter to you:
- Resolution: output resolution and, when shown, the internal rendering resolution used by upscaling.
- Image quality: clarity, detail, and artifacts while the camera or character moves.
- Performance: frame rate and, just as importantly, how consistently it is delivered.
- Visual effects: whether ray-traced effects add enough to the scene to justify their cost.
- Compatibility: whether the option is supported by both the game’s current implementation and your hardware.
Change one setting, play the comparison segment, and keep the change only if the trade-off improves your experience. Repeat as needed; do not rely on a preset recommendation from another game as though it were a benchmark for yours.
When to investigate a GPU limit
Consider hardware only if configuration changes still leave you short of your desired resolution and performance. First establish that the GPU is the limiting component; a graphics-card upgrade is not a general fix for every kind of stutter. NVIDIA’s hardware and ray-tracing recommendations for Control illustrate that GPU capability can matter, but they do not identify a specific card for other games or show that most players need an upgrade.
