For smooth Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer, start with the official 90-FPS High target, use your monitor’s native resolution, select the competitive-focused profile, and cap the game at a frame rate your PC can hold consistently. Then choose an upscaler supported by your graphics card and lower the most expensive effects—ray tracing, shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion and volumetrics—before sacrificing texture quality. This produces steadier frame times and more responsive input than chasing a peak FPS number.

The hardware target behind these settings

Activision’s published 90-FPS High multiplayer tier is the most useful reference point for a smooth competitive setup. It specifies Windows 11, 16GB of system memory, a Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i7-8700 processor, and a Radeon RX 6600 XT, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti or Intel Arc B580 graphics card. The game also requires an SSD and 115GB of available storage at launch. That specification is a target, not a promise that every map, mode or future patch will stay at 90 FPS.

Published requirement What it means when tuning
90 FPS on High multiplayer Use 90 FPS as a practical starting target for a high-refresh competitive profile, then cap below the rate your system cannot sustain.
Windows 11 Keep Windows current and use a 64-bit installation that supports DirectX 12.
Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i7-8700 Older or slower CPUs can become the limit even when the graphics card has unused capacity.
Radeon RX 6600 XT, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti or Intel Arc B580 These are the listed 90-FPS High graphics references, not guaranteed results for every resolution.
16GB RAM The recommended amount for the 90-FPS tier; close background applications if memory pressure causes hitching.
8GB video memory The amount listed for the 90-FPS tier. Keep texture quality within the VRAM meter shown by the game.
SSD with 115GB free at launch Install on an SSD and leave additional working room rather than filling the drive completely.

Activision lists 8GB system RAM as the minimum, 16GB as recommended and 32GB for the ray-tracing tier. Its ray-tracing requirement also lists 16GB of video memory. If your system is below the 90-FPS target, reduce rendering and lighting costs first instead of assuming a faster monitor will solve the problem.

  • Verify DirectX 12 compatibility and install current Windows updates.
  • Update the graphics driver. Activision’s requirements page lists AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 616.56 and Intel 32.0.101.8974; check the current requirements after each major game patch because driver versions can change.
  • If you use an Intel Arc card, enable Resizable BAR. Arc performance can be substantially affected when the feature is disabled.
  • Install the game on an SSD with at least the published 115GB launch space available.
  • Close overlays, recording tools and browser tabs while establishing a baseline. Re-enable them one at a time if you need them.

Build a reliable baseline in the game

  1. Select the display. Use the monitor’s native resolution and its highest stable refresh rate. A 144Hz gaming monitor is useful only when the computer can actually deliver high, sustained frame rates; the panel does not create FPS.
  2. Choose the competitive-focused profile. This profile prioritizes frame rate and responsiveness and is the best starting point for multiplayer. Treat it as a baseline, not a final answer for every GPU.
  3. Set a sustainable cap. Play the same mode and map for several minutes, watch the lowest section of the frame-time graph, and cap the game at a rate it can hold. A stable 90 FPS is preferable to a graph that repeatedly jumps between much higher peaks and severe drops.
  4. Apply one change at a time. Record the resolution, upscaler mode, cap and graphics settings before each test so you can undo a change that worsens clarity or stutter.

Resolution, upscaling and image clarity

Modern Warfare 4 supports 1080p, 1440p, 4K and ultrawide displays. Render at the monitor’s native output when the GPU has enough headroom. If the GPU is full and the frame rate is below your cap, use an upscaler before making broad reductions to geometry or textures.

Which reconstruction option should you use?

Option Use it when Important qualification
NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 You have a supported NVIDIA GPU and want reconstruction designed for that hardware. The game only exposes modes compatible with the installed GPU; judge the result at your chosen output resolution.
AMD FSR Redstone You need an AMD-supported reconstruction path or want a vendor-neutral option available on your system. Available quality modes and performance depend on the game build and GPU.
Intel XeSS 3 You have compatible Intel hardware or prefer XeSS where it is offered. Intel Arc users should also verify Resizable BAR.
Filmic SMAA T2X You want the game’s temporal anti-aliasing path rather than an upscaler. Use its controls and the sharpness slider to restore clarity after lowering internal resolution.

Start with the highest-quality mode that keeps your chosen frame-rate floor. Move down one quality step only when the GPU remains saturated. Examine thin geometry, distant signage, foliage and weapon edges while moving; a still screenshot can hide temporal shimmer. If the image becomes soft, adjust the sharpness slider and Filmic SMAA T2X controls instead of immediately raising every other setting.

  • 1ms MBR: Fast-Paced Speed to Victory - 1ms Motion Blur Reduction (MBR) keeps gameplay smooth and sharp, cutting blur and ghosting so fast-moving action stays clear—helping you stay competitive when every millisecond counts.
  • NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible & AMD FreeSync - NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible and AMD FreeSync deliver smooth, tear-free, low-latency gaming with high refresh rates—so every frame stays sharp.

Frame generation is also supported among the PC options, but it should be treated as a way to increase displayed smoothness after the game already has a sufficiently strong base frame rate. It does not remove the CPU or rendering work needed to produce those base frames, so measure input response as well as the displayed FPS.

Graphics settings: lower the expensive effects first

The official PC overview identifies ray tracing, shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion or screen-space lighting, volumetrics and other shading features as adjustable areas. It does not publish universal FPS gains for each individual setting, so use the following order as a practical tuning sequence rather than a guaranteed benchmark.

  1. Ray tracing. Turn it off first for a competitive profile. Its cost is high, and the ray-tracing tier calls for 32GB of system RAM and 16GB of video memory.
  2. Shadows. Reduce shadow quality or distance if the GPU is still saturated. Keep enough shadow detail to read cover and player silhouettes.
  3. Reflections. Lower reflections when indoor scenes, wet surfaces or large effects cause frame-time spikes.
  4. Ambient occlusion and screen-space lighting. Reduce these next when contact shading is costing more than the visual benefit is worth.
  5. Volumetrics and other lighting effects. Lower fog, smoke and volumetric quality if heavy effects cause the frame-time graph to spike.
  6. Textures. Change textures only when the VRAM meter approaches its limit or you see streaming-related hitching. Textures usually affect memory capacity and clarity more than raw GPU throughput when they fit comfortably in VRAM.

Do not lower every option at once. If you change five settings and the result improves, you will not know which trade-off mattered or which one damaged image quality.

Starting profiles by goal

Goal Resolution approach Graphics starting point What to watch
Competitive 1080p Native 1080p if the 90-FPS target is stable; otherwise use a quality upscaler. Competitive-focused profile, ray tracing off, reduced shadows/reflections/volumetrics, textures within VRAM. Stable frame times and clear moving targets matter more than maximum detail.
Balanced 1440p Native 1440p when GPU headroom remains; otherwise select the highest-quality supported upscaler mode. Keep textures and geometry where memory allows, then reduce ray tracing and lighting effects. Watch GPU utilization and the frame-time floor during effects-heavy scenes.
Visual 4K Native 4K only when the system can sustain the desired floor; otherwise use DLSS, FSR or XeSS where supported. Preserve texture quality if VRAM permits and reduce ray tracing or volumetrics before lowering the output target. Upscaler artifacts are easier to notice at 4K, so inspect distant detail and foliage in motion.
Ultrawide Use the panel’s native ultrawide resolution, then tune internal resolution with an upscaler if necessary. Begin with the same competitive or balanced profile, but expect the wider pixel count to increase GPU load. Check field of view and frame-time behavior in the actual aspect ratio you play.
Ray-tracing showcase Choose native or a quality upscaler according to available GPU headroom. Enable ray tracing only when the system meets the larger memory target and your frame-rate floor remains acceptable. Visual fidelity is the priority; this is not the same objective as the competitive profile.

These are starting profiles, not promises of a particular FPS. The official material supports multiple resolutions, upscaling and frame-generation options but does not provide one preset that is best for every processor, graphics card, map or patch.

How to diagnose low FPS and stutter

If average FPS is low

  • Check whether the GPU is near full utilization. If it is, lower ray tracing, shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion and volumetrics in that order, or move to a lower internal-resolution/upscaler mode.
  • If the GPU is not busy but FPS remains low, the CPU, background software or a frame-rate cap may be limiting the result. Close background tasks and compare a controlled run with the cap temporarily adjusted.
  • Keep textures within VRAM. Exceeding the available memory can cause streaming stalls even when the average FPS looks acceptable.

If FPS looks high but motion is uneven

  • Use the frame-time graph or a reliable overlay rather than average FPS alone. Large frame-time spikes are perceived as stutter.
  • Test the same map and mode after shader compilation or other first-run work has completed; do not compare a busy first load with a later run.
  • Remove overlays and capture utilities temporarily, then add them back individually.
  • Keep the cap at a value the system can sustain rather than allowing unrestricted peaks followed by deep drops.

If the picture is blurry or shimmers

  • Raise the upscaler quality mode before raising unrelated graphics settings.
  • Use the sharpness slider and Filmic SMAA T2X controls.
  • Compare moving foliage, wires, distant signs and weapon edges; these reveal temporal artifacts more reliably than a static menu.

If the game will not start or performance changed after an update

  • Recheck TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, Windows and DirectX 12 compatibility.
  • Confirm that the installed GPU driver still matches the current requirements; the versions listed for launch can be replaced after patches.
  • On Intel Arc, verify Resizable BAR again after firmware or BIOS changes.
  • Recheck available SSD space and the game’s graphics profile. A patch can reset or add settings, so record your preferred values.

A repeatable tuning method

  1. Write down your monitor resolution and refresh rate, CPU, GPU, system RAM, VRAM and installed driver.
  2. Load the competitive-focused profile and use native resolution.
  3. Play one repeatable section of the same map and mode while observing average FPS, the lowest sustained portion of the run and frame-time spikes.
  4. Apply one change—first ray tracing, then shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, volumetrics or the upscaler quality mode.
  5. Repeat the same section and keep the change only if it improves the frame-time floor without unacceptable image degradation.
  6. After finding a stable profile, test several maps and modes. A setting that is smooth in a quiet area may still fail during smoke, explosions or large multiplayer fights.

This method matters because no official source publishes a universal FPS delta for each setting. Your hardware, resolution, map, driver and patch determine the result; frame-time consistency is the useful measurement for “smooth.”

What the official PC feature set means

Call of Duty Staff says Modern Warfare 4 exposes more than 800 customization options across graphics, gameplay, input devices and the interface. That breadth is useful, but it also means a copied preset can hide a setting that does not suit your display or hardware. Blizzard describes PC-specific optimizations for systems prioritizing either high frame rates or maximum visual fidelity, and says multiple upscaling and frame-generation options let players balance image quality, performance and responsiveness.
