The best settings are the ones your PC can sustain at your chosen resolution and frame-rate target. Red Dead Redemption 2 includes a quality slider and benchmark for finding that balance; Grand Theft Auto V requires you to identify whether you are running the Enhanced or Legacy edition before applying its requirements. Use the procedures below to establish a measured baseline, change demanding options methodically, and keep video-memory use within a safe range.
Why there is no universal “best” preset
Graphics options do not cost the same on every computer. Rockstar states that “depending on system configuration, different settings will have different impacts on game performance.” A setting that is acceptable on one combination of processor, graphics card, memory and display resolution can cause stutter or an unstable frame rate on another.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That makes a universal list of values misleading. A useful profile starts with four facts: the exact game edition, your GPU and CPU, the resolution you actually play at, and whether you prioritize a steadier frame rate or higher image quality. Record those details before changing anything so you can tell whether an adjustment helped.
- Resolution: use the native resolution of your monitor unless you have a specific reason to render lower.
- Target: decide whether consistency, maximum image quality, or a compromise matters most.
- Hardware: note the graphics card, its video-memory capacity, processor and installed system memory.
- Edition: GTA V Enhanced and GTA V Legacy have different published requirements and must not be treated as the same game.
Your target should be stated in practical terms: for example, “steady play at my monitor’s resolution” or “the highest detail that does not produce distracting drops.” Without that target, two profiles cannot be meaningfully compared. A higher average frame rate is not automatically better if it comes with uneven frame pacing, crashes or image quality you dislike.

Check requirements before tuning
Official requirements are compatibility tiers, not promises of a particular frame rate at a particular resolution. Rockstar also notes that requirements can change as downloadable content and programming change. Use them to identify an obvious hardware shortfall, then use in-game testing to choose settings.
Check the requirements for the edition and game you actually own. Do not use an Enhanced table to judge Legacy, or assume that a Legacy-compatible computer will run Enhanced. Likewise, a card in a “recommended” tier does not mean that every resolution, refresh rate or image-quality choice will be sustained.
Red Dead Redemption 2 requirements
| Component | Minimum tier | Recommended tier |
|---|---|---|
| System memory | 8GB RAM | 12GB RAM |
| Graphics card | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 (2GB) or AMD Radeon R9 280 (3GB) | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB) or AMD Radeon RX 480 (4GB) |
| Storage | 150GB | |
These figures are Rockstar’s published 2024 requirements. They do not establish an expected FPS for either the minimum or recommended card. The storage figure is a capacity requirement, not a statement that every drive will deliver identical loading behavior.
Grand Theft Auto V requirements by edition
| Edition | Minimum memory | Recommended memory | Minimum GPU | Recommended GPU | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enhanced | 8GB RAM | 16GB dual-channel RAM | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1630 (4GB) or AMD Radeon RX 6400 (4GB) | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (8GB) or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT (8GB) | 105GB SSD |
| Legacy | 4GB RAM | 8GB RAM | NVIDIA GTX 660 (2GB) or AMD HD7870 (2GB) | Not stated separately in the cited requirement summary | 125GB |
Rockstar published these GTA V tiers in 2025. The Enhanced recommendation of an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT is not an FPS guarantee, and it should not be applied to Legacy. Conversely, meeting Legacy’s older requirement does not establish that a system is suitable for Enhanced. The different storage figures also matter when checking free space before installation or an update.
Set up a repeatable baseline
Make one controlled pass before chasing individual options. Close background applications that compete for memory, select the resolution you intend to use, and allow the game to finish any shader or asset preparation it performs. Note the frame-rate behavior in the same repeatable scene or benchmark each time. Averages alone can hide hitching, so pay attention to pauses and sudden drops as well as the general frame rate.
- Write down the GPU model, video-memory capacity, CPU, system RAM and display resolution.
- Choose whether your first pass favors performance, quality or a middle ground.
- Apply the game’s automatic or default recommendation, if available, rather than changing every option at once.
- Test the same scene or built-in benchmark and record the result and visible problems.
- Change one setting or one closely related group, test again, and keep the change only if it improves the result you care about.
Run tests under comparable conditions: use the same resolution, avoid changing several unrelated options between runs, and note whether the problem appears during ordinary play or only in a benchmark. If a benchmark is clean but a busy gameplay area hitches, that gameplay area is the more useful test for your final profile.
This process produces a setting profile that can be restored after a driver update, game update or hardware change. It also prevents you from attributing an improvement to the wrong option. Save or photograph the original values before experimenting so a failed change is easy to undo.

Best settings workflow for Red Dead Redemption 2
1. Start with the quality slider
Rockstar’s quickest optimization method is the in-game Quality slider. Rockstar says the slider analyzes your PC’s capabilities and adjusts a range of background parameters according to your selected resolution and preference for higher performance or higher quality graphics. Use it as an informed starting point, not a final answer.
Move toward performance if the initial result is unstable, or toward quality if the frame rate is already consistent and you want more detail. Apply the position, restart or reload if the game requests it, and run the benchmark before making fine adjustments. The slider is especially useful when you do not yet know which individual options are consuming the most headroom.
2. Run the built-in benchmark
Use the exact path Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test. Run it after the initial slider choice and again after each meaningful group of changes. Keep the resolution and other test conditions the same so the comparisons remain useful.
The benchmark is evidence for your particular PC; it is not a universal score for a GPU model. If the benchmark looks acceptable but normal play stutters, test a representative gameplay area as well and prioritize the problem you actually experience. Record both the numerical result you observe and subjective issues such as shimmering, muddy textures or pauses.
3. Adjust the settings with the largest potential impact first
Rockstar’s support sequence puts these options first for experimentation:
- MSAA
- Reflection Quality
- Water Quality
- Volumetric Quality
- Near Volumetric Resolution
Change one of these at a time, or make a clearly documented small group change, then rerun the benchmark. Do not assume that lowering every option is necessary; retain a setting when its visual benefit is worth its measured cost on your system. If you change a group, test each member separately later so you know which option supplied the improvement.
4. Fine-tune the remaining options
Once the first group is stable, continue through the other options Rockstar lists:

Keep a simple log of the old value, new value and benchmark result. If a change improves the average but introduces visible shimmer, muddy textures or new hitching, revert it; the “best” value is the one that meets your priority without creating a new problem. Work from the options that address the symptom you see instead of lowering unrelated settings.

Understanding the RDR2 adjustment order
The order is a practical experiment sequence, not a universal ranking of performance cost. Rockstar specifically places MSAA, reflections, water, volumetrics and near volumetric resolution first because they are useful early candidates when searching for a balance. Your result can differ with resolution, GPU, CPU and available video memory.
After each change, ask three questions: Did the measured result improve, did the visual defect become acceptable, and did memory use or stability change? If the answer is no, restore the previous value. This avoids sacrificing texture clarity or lighting detail for a gain that is too small to notice.
Handling RDR2 video-memory warnings and stutter
If RDR2 reports a memory problem, crashes during loading or stutters heavily, first verify that the computer meets the published minimum requirements. Rockstar recommends lowering graphics settings as needed and beginning with the in-game Video Memory meter at about two-thirds of available video memory. This approximately 66% value is troubleshooting guidance for a memory warning, not a universal performance preset.
- Confirm the GPU’s actual video-memory capacity and close applications that may consume graphics memory.
- Lower the settings that you have already identified as costly, then watch the Video Memory meter.
- Set the meter to roughly two-thirds of available video memory as an initial troubleshooting point.
- Apply the changes and retest the same scene or benchmark.
- If the warning persists below that point, check the game installation, drivers and system stability before buying hardware; a settings value alone cannot diagnose every crash.
Do not treat the meter as a promise that all cards will perform identically at the same percentage. It is a way to leave headroom while you isolate a memory-related fault. A card that technically meets a listed requirement can still need lower settings at your chosen resolution or exhibit a different bottleneck.

Rockstar documents switching between Vulkan and DirectX 12 as a troubleshooting option for certain graphics errors. It is not an automatic optimization and there is no evidence here that one API is universally faster.
Keep the API that is stable on your PC. If you experience a documented graphics error, switch to the other API, restart the game if required, and repeat the same benchmark and gameplay test. If the error disappears but performance changes, compare the complete result rather than assuming the API switch itself is an upgrade. Change no other major settings during that comparison, or you will not know what solved the problem.

Best settings workflow for GTA V
1. Identify Enhanced or Legacy first
Check the edition shown by your launcher or installation before comparing your hardware with a requirements page. Enhanced has a higher memory, GPU and SSD requirement; Legacy has older, lower tiers. Mixing them is the most common way to draw the wrong conclusion about whether a PC is adequate.
2. Establish a conservative baseline
Use the game’s default or recommended profile at your chosen resolution, then test a repeatable route or scene. Record the GPU, CPU, resolution and observed frame-rate behavior. If the game is already stable, raise image-quality options one at a time. If it is unstable, lower demanding options in small steps and retest rather than selecting the lowest possible preset immediately.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the edition in your notes alongside the settings. An Enhanced profile and a Legacy profile are not interchangeable records, even if they use similar option names. Recheck the edition after a major installation or launcher change.
3. Separate image quality from stability
Textures, lighting, shadows, reflections, water and other effects can change both appearance and workload. Make each change for a reason: remove hitching, protect video-memory headroom, or improve a visible detail. Keep a change only when it helps your chosen target. Requirements pages do not provide a tested FPS outcome for a particular GTA V resolution, so the game’s own behavior is the deciding evidence.
4. Keep edition-specific expectations
For Enhanced, Rockstar lists 8GB RAM as minimum, 16GB dual-channel as recommended, a 105GB SSD requirement, GTX 1630 or RX 6400 (4GB) as minimum graphics cards, and RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT (8GB) as recommended. For Legacy, the listed figures are 4GB RAM minimum, 8GB recommended, 125GB storage, and GTX 660 (2GB) or HD7870 (2GB) minimum graphics cards. These are requirement tiers, not measured performance profiles.
Do not infer that the larger Legacy storage number means it has the higher graphics requirement; storage capacity and rendering performance are separate checks. Similarly, dual-channel memory is specifically part of the Enhanced recommended tier, so do not silently substitute that recommendation for the Legacy figures.
Choosing a performance or quality profile
| Priority | How to build the profile | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Start from the game’s performance-oriented recommendation, then lower the options that your benchmark identifies as costly. | Stable frame pacing at your chosen resolution, no memory warning and acceptable clarity. |
| Quality | Start from the quality side of the recommendation, then reduce only settings that prevent a stable result. | Consistent gameplay first; retain detail only when it does not cause distracting drops or stutter. |
| Balanced | Use the middle of the available recommendation, benchmark, and adjust one group at a time. | A measured compromise between image quality, frame-rate consistency and video-memory headroom. |
Use the same resolution, test route and hardware notes when comparing profiles. A profile cannot be called better without specifying what it improves: average frame rate, consistency, visual detail or memory use. If you change resolution, start a fresh comparison because the workload and useful trade-offs have changed.

Troubleshooting by symptom
Low or inconsistent frame rate
- Run the benchmark after returning to a known baseline.
- On RDR2, revisit MSAA, reflections, water, volumetric quality and near volumetric resolution first, then continue through the remaining listed options.
- On GTA V, lower one demanding graphics group at a time and test the same scene.
- Check that you are comparing the correct GTA V edition and are not applying Enhanced expectations to Legacy or vice versa.
- Confirm that the test resolution has not changed between runs; a result at a different resolution is not a fair settings comparison.
Stutter, crashes or a video-memory warning in RDR2
- Verify the published minimum requirements.
- Reduce graphics settings and set the Video Memory meter to approximately two-thirds of available video memory as Rockstar’s initial troubleshooting guidance.
- Retest after closing competing applications.
- If a graphics error remains, try the alternate API (Vulkan or DirectX 12) as a diagnostic step, not as a guaranteed speed improvement.
- Keep notes on whether the fault occurs in the benchmark, a particular gameplay area or during loading; that distinction helps you judge whether a setting change actually solved it.
Image quality looks poor after lowering settings
- Undo the last change that caused the unacceptable result.
- Prefer targeted reductions over lowering every option.
- Use the benchmark to find a different trade-off that preserves the details most visible at your resolution.
- Compare screenshots or the same viewpoint when possible, rather than relying on memory after several changes.
When a hardware upgrade is justified
Upgrade only after you have confirmed the edition, metered the problem and tested a lower setting profile. If a PC remains below the desired result while meeting the game’s requirements, the next component depends on the bottleneck shown by testing. A graphics-card upgrade is relevant when the GPU is the limiting factor or lacks sufficient video memory; an upgrade is not automatically justified by a requirement table alone.
Rockstar lists an RTX 3060 with 8GB among the recommended GPUs for GTA V Enhanced, but that listing does not establish its current price, availability, RDR2 performance or suitability for every resolution. Treat it as a reference point for the Enhanced requirement tier, not a universal shopping recommendation. Check current pricing and compatibility separately before purchasing, and do not buy a card solely because it appears in a requirement table.
A practical repeatable checklist
- Identify the game and, for GTA V, confirm Enhanced or Legacy.
- Record GPU, video-memory capacity, CPU, system RAM and display resolution.
- Choose a performance, quality or balanced goal.
- Apply the game’s initial recommendation.
- Benchmark or test a repeatable gameplay scene.
- Change one option or one documented group, then test again.
- For RDR2 memory errors, verify requirements and begin near two-thirds of available video memory.
- For RDR2 graphics errors, compare Vulkan and DirectX 12 for stability.
- Keep the profile that meets your target without introducing stutter, crashes or unacceptable image quality.
- Save the final values and revisit them after a game update, driver change or hardware upgrade.
The result is a settings profile grounded in your own hardware and measurements rather than a value copied from an unrelated PC. Repeating the same process after major software or hardware changes keeps the profile trustworthy.

What are the best universal settings for GTA V and RDR2?
There is no universal preset. Rockstar says settings have different performance impacts depending on the system. Identify your hardware, resolution and goal, start with the game’s recommendation, and benchmark before making targeted changes.
How do I optimize Red Dead Redemption 2 quickly?
Use the in-game Quality slider first, then go to Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test. Adjust MSAA, Reflection Quality, Water Quality, Volumetric Quality and Near Volumetric Resolution early, testing after each change or documented group.
What should I do when RDR2 reports a video-memory error?
Confirm that the PC meets the minimum requirements, lower graphics settings, close competing applications and begin with the Video Memory meter at about two-thirds of available video memory. Retest before considering hardware purchases.
Should I switch RDR2 from Vulkan to DirectX 12 for more FPS?
Not automatically. Rockstar documents switching APIs as troubleshooting for certain graphics errors, not as a universal performance upgrade. Compare both APIs on the same benchmark and gameplay scene and keep the stable result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat is the difference between GTA V Enhanced and Legacy requirements?
Enhanced lists 8GB RAM minimum, 16GB dual-channel recommended, a 105GB SSD, GTX 1630/RX 6400 minimum GPUs and RTX 3060/RX 6600 XT recommended GPUs. Legacy lists 4GB RAM minimum, 8GB recommended, 125GB storage and GTX 660/HD7870 minimum GPUs. Do not apply one edition’s tier to the other.
Does a recommended GPU guarantee a specific frame rate?
No. Rockstar’s requirement tiers are not tested FPS targets for a particular resolution or settings profile. Use them to identify compatibility, then rely on the game’s benchmark and repeatable gameplay testing.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Identify the exact GTA V edition, record your hardware and resolution, start with each game’s recommendation, and measure before changing settings. In RDR2, use the Quality slider and benchmark, experiment first with MSAA, reflections, water and volumetrics, and use the approximately two-thirds Video Memory guidance only when troubleshooting memory errors. Treat Vulkan or DirectX 12 as stability diagnostics, not guaranteed speed fixes, and buy hardware only after testing shows that settings changes cannot meet your goal.
