The right settings depend on your graphics card and VRAM, processor, memory, resolution, mods, and preferred balance between frame rate and image quality. Use Rockstar’s in-game quality slider as a starting point, then tune and benchmark on your own PC; Rockstar’s published guidance is general PC advice, not testing of modded areas.
Start with a benchmark, not a preset
Rockstar notes that “Depending on system configuration, different settings will have different impacts on game performance.” Its PC graphics tuning guide recommends using the in-game quality slider for a quick starting point, then refining settings and using the built-in Graphics Benchmark to compare performance and image quality. The slider is a baseline, not a tested modded-area preset.
- Record your baseline. Note your CPU, GPU and available VRAM, RAM, display resolution, current graphics API, mods in use, and the frame-rate and visual-quality balance you want.
- Set the game’s resolution and use the quality slider. Treat the result as a starting configuration, not proof it is optimal for your setup.
- Run the built-in Graphics Benchmark. Record the result so you can compare it with later changes.
- Change priority settings in manageable groups. Benchmark after each meaningful group, and keep changes only when they move you closer to your own target without an image-quality trade-off you dislike.
- Check performance in the areas you actually explore. As practical guidance, test the modded locations and conditions that matter to you; Rockstar’s cited tuning guidance does not specifically benchmark mods or large modded areas.
Tune Rockstar’s priority graphics settings first
Rockstar identifies these settings as a place to begin detailed tuning. It does not prescribe a universal value for any of them, so compare changes on your own system rather than assuming that one setting should always be low or high.
- MSAA: Test it against your performance and image-quality goals.
- Reflection quality: Compare the visual result with the benchmark performance change.
- Water quality: Evaluate it in scenes where water is visible as well as in the benchmark.
- Volumetric quality and near volumetric resolution: Test these individually or as a small group, then keep the combination that best fits your target.
When a change helps one scene but not another, prioritize the result in the kind of play you care about. A benchmark is useful for repeatable comparisons, but no result establishes how every modded area will behave.

Refine the remaining settings after the first pass
Once you have tested the priority group, Rockstar’s guide also lists the following settings for tuning. Work through them methodically and use the benchmark to check the effect of meaningful changes; the official guidance does not establish a one-size-fits-all low, medium, or high prescription.
- TAA, FXAA, and anisotropic filtering
- Texture quality, lighting quality, and global illumination
- Shadow quality, far shadows, and tessellation
- Screen-space ambient occlusion
- Volumetric lighting and far volumetric resolution
- Triple buffering, particles, and mirrors
Change one setting or a small, related group at a time. If you make many changes together, it becomes harder to tell which one affected performance or image quality.

Use VRAM guidance only when troubleshooting an out-of-memory error
Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_D3D_DEFERRED_MEM troubleshooting article, last updated March 12, 2026, suggests beginning with the Video Memory meter around 66% of available video memory, then lowering settings if memory problems persist. That is a troubleshooting starting point for the named out-of-memory error—not a general-purpose VRAM cap or recommended preset.
If you encounter that error, check that your PC meets Rockstar’s published minimum requirements, lower settings, and use the meter guidance as part of troubleshooting. Do not treat the displayed percentage as a guarantee that a particular mod or area will fit in memory.

Switch graphics APIs only as a diagnostic
Rockstar documents Vulkan and DirectX 12 as options to try when graphics initialization fails; its ERR_GFX_INIT troubleshooting instructions explain how to switch APIs through Advanced Graphics and system.xml. The source does not rank Vulkan or DirectX 12 as universally faster. If the game is working, there is no source-backed reason to edit configuration files or switch APIs just to chase performance.
The same troubleshooting instructions include clearing files whose names start with “sga_” as part of the prescribed recovery steps. Follow Rockstar’s instructions in the context of a graphics initialization problem rather than deleting files casually.

Use the published requirements as reference points
Rockstar’s PC requirements, last updated April 30, 2024, give these minimum and recommended examples. They are reference points, not a promise of performance in large modded areas; Rockstar also cautions that system requirements can change as content and code change.

These figures are from Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 PC system requirements. They do not establish which present-day hardware you need for a particular resolution, mod list, setting combination, or frame-rate target. Compare your actual PC with the published examples, then use your own benchmark results to decide whether a change in settings is enough. Consider hardware upgrades only if your current system cannot meet the target you have chosen.

What official guidance does—and does not—establish
Rockstar’s 2019 Title Update 1.15 notes reported improved performance on high-end CPUs “when displaying large amounts of particle effects at once.” That narrowly described update note does not demonstrate that upgrading a CPU or lowering particle settings improves performance in large modded areas. No universal setting values or measured modded-area results are established by the cited official guidance.
