The best Modern Warfare 4 PC setup starts with your monitor’s native resolution and a frame-rate cap your system can sustain in the most demanding mode you actually play. Use the hardware-matched reconstruction option—DLSS 4.5 on NVIDIA, FSR Redstone on AMD, XeSS 3 on Intel, or Filmic SMAA T2X for the game’s temporal anti-aliasing path—then tune sharpness, lighting, shadows and reflections around that stable baseline. Leave ray tracing off unless your GPU has substantial headroom; Activision’s high-ray-tracing 4K tier is aimed at systems with 16 GB of video memory and 32 GB of system RAM.
Use this order: resolution, frame time, reconstruction, then visual details
Modern Warfare 4 offers enough controls to make an unstable preset look attractive in screenshots while feeling poor in a match. A better approach is sequential:

- Set the game and Windows to the display’s native resolution. The game supports 1080p, 1440p, 4K and ultrawide displays.
- Choose a sustainable frame-rate cap. Test the heaviest map and mode you play, and judge the result with the in-game FPS or frame-time display rather than an average that collapses during effects-heavy scenes.
- Select the reconstruction method that matches your GPU vendor. Start in Quality mode and move to Balanced or Performance only when the target is missed.
- Set texture quality according to available video memory. Reduce expensive lighting, shadow, reflection, volumetric and occlusion options before lowering textures when VRAM allows.
- Add clarity controls and optional ray tracing last. Global sharpness, FOV, HDR10+, screen-space reflections, shadow filtering, occlusion and screen-space lighting are easier to judge once frame time is stable.
This ordering is a practical tuning method, not a vendor-prescribed preset. It prevents an expensive effect from masking the real cause of a frame-time problem.

Pick the right display resolution and frame-rate target
Native resolution first
Set Windows and Modern Warfare 4 to the panel’s native mode. At 1080p, the GPU has fewer pixels to render and reconstruction can be reserved for demanding scenes. At 1440p, image detail and performance are often easier to balance with Quality upscaling. At 4K and on ultrawide displays, reconstruction becomes more valuable because the native pixel workload is much larger.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallDo not select a resolution merely because it appears in a preset. A non-native desktop or game resolution can soften text and geometry before the upscaler has done any work. If you use an ultrawide panel, verify that the selected aspect ratio fills the display without stretching the field of view.
Cap for consistency, not a headline average
Choose a cap that remains achievable in the least favorable situations you encounter: large multiplayer fights, smoke, volumetric effects and busy campaign scenes. A lower cap with even frame pacing usually feels better than an uncapped average that repeatedly falls through the refresh-rate range. Use the game’s frame-time/FPS display while moving through representative scenes, then leave the cap in place while you tune image quality.
Activision specifically lists a 90-FPS target for High-quality multiplayer on the hardware tier shown above. That figure is a recommended target for that configuration, not a promise for every system or mode. It should not be extrapolated into unverified 120-FPS, 144-FPS or 4K claims.
Choose the reconstruction and anti-aliasing path
Modern Warfare 4 documents four principal image-reconstruction choices. Match the option to the GPU vendor when possible:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA | DLSS 4.5 in Quality mode | Move to Balanced or Performance only if the sustainable frame-rate target is missed. |
| AMD | FSR Redstone in Quality mode | Use a lower quality mode when the GPU cannot hold the chosen cap, then restore clarity with global sharpness. |
| Intel | XeSS 3 in Quality mode | Lower the mode only when frame time requires it and the resulting detail remains acceptable. |
| Any supported GPU | Filmic SMAA T2X | Choose it when you prefer the game’s temporal anti-aliasing path over vendor reconstruction. |
Quality, Balanced and Performance modes
Quality mode is the sensible starting point because it preserves more input detail while still reducing the internal render workload. If the game misses your cap, test Balanced before Performance. Performance mode is a last step for a demanding resolution or a GPU with little headroom; inspect thin geometry, foliage, distant signage and motion for softness or reconstruction artifacts.
Use sharpness after changing the mode
Modern Warfare 4 provides a global sharpness slider. Treat it as a finishing control, not a substitute for the correct resolution or reconstruction mode. If Balanced or Performance looks soft, increase sharpness gradually and check both a still scene and fast movement. Excessive sharpening can make edges shimmer and can exaggerate temporal artifacts.

Frame generation is separate from base rendering
Activision describes multiple upscaling and frame-generation options for balancing image quality, performance and responsiveness. Frame generation can increase the displayed frame rate, but it does not make the underlying simulation or base render equally responsive. Evaluate it separately from base FPS: first establish stable frame time without it, then decide whether the smoother displayed motion and possible artifacts suit your monitor and play style.
Keep ray tracing as an optional high-end layer
Ray tracing is the least broadly useful starting point because it spends GPU headroom on reflections, ambient occlusion, shadows or volumetric lighting that may be difficult to notice during a fast match. For a performance-friendly baseline, leave ray tracing disabled.

Activision’s ultra 4K-upscaled high-ray-tracing tier calls for 32 GB of system RAM, 16 GB of VRAM and either a Radeon RX 9070 XT or GeForce RTX 5070 Ti. That specification identifies the class of hardware intended for the feature-rich tier; it does not mean every setting must be enabled on those cards, nor that a lower-end system cannot launch the game with ray tracing off.
Add effects one at a time
- Start from your stable non-ray-traced profile.
- Enable one ray-traced category—reflections, ambient occlusion, shadows or volumetrics.
- Repeat the same movement and combat-like scene while watching frame time, not only the instantaneous FPS number.
- Keep the effect only if the worst-case frame time remains acceptable.
- Continue with the next category, reverting the previous change if the combined load becomes unstable.
This method reveals which effect is consuming your headroom and makes recovery straightforward. It also avoids assuming that a single “High” or “Ultra” label has the same cost across resolutions.
Set textures and lighting for the hardware you have
Textures follow VRAM capacity
Keep texture quality as high as your available video memory allows. Texture settings primarily affect asset detail and can be a better place to preserve visual quality than reducing every surface to Low. If you see memory pressure, streaming problems or instability, lower textures one step and retest before changing several unrelated options at once.
The 16 GB VRAM figure in Activision’s ray-tracing tier is a hardware reference for that tier, not a universal texture requirement. Systems below it should choose a texture level that leaves room for the game, the display resolution and other GPU workloads.
Reduce expensive lighting before texture detail
Once textures are reasonable, tune the settings that commonly consume the most graphics headroom in a scene: lighting quality, shadow quality and filtering, reflections, volumetric effects, occlusion and screen-space lighting. Change one group at a time and retain the first level that keeps frame time stable. The visual trade-off is usually easier to spot in motion than in a menu screenshot.
Screen-space reflections and occlusion
Screen-space reflections can add convincing wet-surface and metallic detail but are limited by what is visible in the current frame. If reflections cause drops or distracting artifacts, lower or disable them before sacrificing your chosen reconstruction mode. Occlusion and screen-space lighting affect contact shadows and local depth; reduce them when indoor scenes or cluttered fights expose a frame-time spike.
Use field of view, HDR and clarity controls deliberately
Field of view
Set FOV to a value that keeps targets legible while giving the peripheral awareness you need. A wider view shows more of the scene but makes distant objects occupy fewer pixels, which can make them harder to read. Modern Warfare 4 includes an Enhanced FOV option; test it in a private or low-pressure match with your preferred weapon and movement settings rather than copying a number from another player.

HDR10+
Retain HDR10+ when your display supports it and the resulting contrast improves visibility. Check bright highlights, dark interiors and enemy silhouettes after enabling it. If details disappear into crushed shadows or clipped highlights, recalibrate the display or return to the mode that gives you clearer information; HDR is not automatically better on every panel.
Shading quality and shadow filtering
Shading quality controls the consistency of surface lighting, while shadow filtering influences edge smoothness and stability. If the image looks coarse despite a good reconstruction mode, adjust these controls before raising sharpness aggressively. If frame time is the priority, lower them in small steps and inspect foliage, character outlines and moving shadows.

Competitive multiplayer profile
- Use the monitor’s native resolution and a cap that the system can sustain in the heaviest multiplayer scenes.
- Start with the vendor-matched upscaler in Quality mode; use Balanced only when the cap is missed.
- Keep ray tracing disabled unless the GPU has clear frame-time headroom.
- Keep textures as high as VRAM permits, then reduce lighting, shadows, reflections, volumetrics and occlusion.
- Test Enhanced FOV and set global sharpness only high enough to restore clarity.
- Use HDR10+ only when it improves target visibility on your display.
Activision characterizes its competitive-focused settings as a way to prioritize high frame rates and responsiveness during moment-to-moment fights. The practical interpretation is stable frame time and readable targets, not the highest possible preset label.
Image-quality profile
- Remain at native resolution or use the highest-quality reconstruction mode that holds your cap.
- Keep textures high within the available VRAM budget.
- Enable HDR10+ when the display benefits from it.
- On hardware near the published 16 GB VRAM and 32 GB RAM ray-tracing tier, add ray-traced reflections, ambient occlusion, shadows or volumetrics individually.
- Use global sharpness sparingly so fine detail remains natural rather than overly outlined.
Step-by-step tuning procedure
- Prepare the system. Confirm broadband internet, DirectX 12 compatibility, AVX support on the processor, Resizable BAR for an Intel Arc GPU, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot where required, the listed graphics driver, and 115 GB of free SSD space at launch.
- Set the display. Match Windows and the game to the panel’s native 1080p, 1440p, 4K or ultrawide mode.
- Choose a cap. Start with the frame-rate target you can sustain in the most demanding mode you play. Verify it with the game’s frame-time/FPS display.
- Select reconstruction. Choose DLSS 4.5 for NVIDIA, FSR Redstone for AMD, XeSS 3 for Intel, or Filmic SMAA T2X if you prefer the temporal anti-aliasing path. Begin in Quality.
- Stabilize the base render. If frame time is too high, move to Balanced and then Performance only as necessary. Do not enable frame generation yet.
- Set textures. Raise them until VRAM headroom becomes uncomfortable, then step back one level if streaming or stability suffers.
- Lower costly effects in order. Tune lighting, shadows and filtering, reflections, volumetrics, occlusion and screen-space lighting before reducing textures that your VRAM can support.
- Refine clarity. Adjust global sharpness, FOV and Enhanced FOV, then evaluate HDR10+ on the actual display.
- Test frame generation separately. Compare motion and responsiveness after base frame time is stable; keep it only if its artifacts and latency trade-offs are acceptable to you.
- Experiment with ray tracing last. Add one category at a time and keep a change only when worst-case frame time remains stable.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The image is soft after enabling an upscaler
Move from Performance to Balanced or Quality if the frame target allows it, then adjust the global sharpness slider gradually. Check native resolution and the display’s scaling mode before adding more sharpening.
FPS looks high but aiming feels inconsistent
Disable frame generation temporarily and inspect base frame time. Re-establish a stable cap first, then retest frame generation as a separate choice.
Recommended Free Tools
Large fights cause sudden drops
Repeat the same scene with ray tracing off. If the problem persists, reduce reflections, volumetrics, lighting, shadows, occlusion or screen-space lighting one at a time. Keep the change that removes the worst frame-time spike rather than lowering every option indiscriminately.
Textures stream poorly or the game becomes unstable
Lower texture quality one step to create more VRAM headroom, verify that the installation remains on an SSD, and retest after closing other GPU-intensive applications.
Targets are hard to see after changing FOV or HDR
Test the previous FOV beside Enhanced FOV in a representative match. For HDR10+, inspect both dark interiors and bright outdoor scenes; use the mode that preserves silhouettes and highlight detail on your display.
Release-date and specification caveats
Activision’s official PC launch announcement lists October 23, 2026 for Battle.net, while the Steam listing shows October 22, 2026. Treat those as platform- and time-zone-dependent listings rather than a contradiction. Hardware requirements, driver recommendations and feature availability may change with patches, so check the current Activision specifications when installing or troubleshooting.

Activision says the game includes more than 800 customization options across graphics, gameplay, input devices and interface. That breadth is useful only when changes are made methodically: establish resolution and frame time, select reconstruction, then spend remaining headroom on the visual controls that matter most to your display and play style.
