Which PC game store is best for indie releases?
Your best choice depends on how you discover games and what you need after purchase:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- GOG: the clearest fit for curated, DRM-free releases and customers who want downloadable installers with less launcher dependence.
- itch.io: the strongest fit for prototypes, game-jam projects, tiny teams, browser games and unusual experiments that may never reach a large storefront.
- Steam: the practical default when you want the largest discovery system, extensive tags, reviews, wishlists, demos, events and personalized recommendations.
- Epic Games Store: a secondary option for its official indie category, free-indie filter, promotions or a title released there first.
These are different kinds of strengths. GOG emphasizes selection and ownership flexibility; itch.io emphasizes creator access; Steam emphasizes searchable scale; Epic provides another distribution channel with a dedicated indie section. A store can be excellent for finding a game and still be a poor fit for the way you want to install, update or play it.

At-a-glance comparison
| Store | Best for | Catalog approach | Discovery tools documented by the store | DRM and offline position | What to verify per title |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GOG | Curated indie games and DRM-free PC games | Selective storefront | Store categories and curated selection | GOG highlights DRM-free games and commonly provides downloadable installers; implementation can differ by game | Installer availability, update method, multiplayer, required services and refund terms |
| itch.io | Experimental, creator-led and very small-scale projects | Open marketplace for independent creators | Game jams, bundles, collections, creator pages and the itch app | Varies by project; browser play, direct downloads and launcher-based delivery are all possible | Download format, platform, price, updates, controller support and whether a Steam key is included |
| Steam | Broad discovery and a large mainstream-to-indie catalog | Very broad catalog with user and developer metadata | Recommendation Feed, Discovery Queue, tags, filters, wishlists, reviews, demos and events | Steam client entitlement is generally part of the experience; a title’s own DRM and offline behavior must be checked | DRM, offline mode, account requirements, operating-system support, multiplayer and refund eligibility |
| Epic Games Store | Indie promotions, free games and Epic-exclusive releases | Broad storefront with an official Indie Games category | Indie Games category and a free tag that can identify free indie games | Store- and title-specific; do not infer DRM or offline behavior from the category label | Launcher needs, entitlement rules, platform support, multiplayer, regional price and refund terms |
No authoritative, directly comparable figure establishes which store sells the most indie games or produces the highest discovery success. Treat “best” as a match for your priorities rather than a market-share ranking.

GOG: the strongest choice for curated, DRM-free releases
Why GOG stands out
GOG describes its storefront as “a digital distribution platform – an online store with a curated selection of games” and highlights DRM-free PC games. That combination is unusually clear: the catalog is selective rather than an open upload marketplace, and the store makes freedom from digital-rights restrictions a central selling point.
For an indie buyer, this can mean downloading an installer, keeping it as a backup and launching a compatible game without relying on a permanent store client. It is especially attractive for preservation-minded players, people with intermittent internet access and households that do not want every game tied to another running application.
What “DRM-free” does and does not promise
DRM-free describes the store’s distribution approach, not every behavior of every game. A title may still require an internet connection for an initial setup, an external account for multiplayer, or a separate service for cloud saves. Some releases include optional Galaxy features while retaining an offline installer; others may package updates differently. Read the product page and the installer notes before assuming that two GOG games behave alike.
- Check whether an offline installer is supplied and whether it is a complete build or a small installer that fetches files.
- Look for the game’s update process. Manual installers can provide more control but may require you to download patches yourself.
- Confirm multiplayer architecture, server status and account requirements. DRM-free single-player access does not guarantee DRM-free online play.
- Read the current refund conditions attached to the purchase, especially if you are buying an early-access or technically unusual release.
When GOG is the right first stop
Begin here when your shortlist is made up of narrative adventures, classic-inspired games, single-player experiments or compact indie releases and you value a selective catalog over the widest possible inventory. Search the store’s indie and genre sections, then open each product page to confirm Windows, macOS or Linux support, controller notes and the exact files included.
Where GOG may not be ideal
A curated catalog is necessarily smaller than an open marketplace or a broad platform. A newly released prototype, a niche game-jam entry or an experimental browser title may never be submitted to GOG. Multiplayer communities can also be split between storefronts, so check where the developer’s players actually gather before buying a game for online use.
itch.io: the best place for experimental and creator-led discovery
Why itch.io is different
itch.io calls itself “an open marketplace for independent digital creators with a focus on independent video games.” Its homepage presents game jams, bundles, collections, creator projects and an itch app. The result is less like a conventional, tightly filtered retail shelf and more like a constantly changing directory of work in progress, personal releases and finished games.
That openness makes itch.io the best answer to questions such as “Where can I find games that are too unusual for major stores?” You will encounter short-form projects, prototypes, interactive fiction, experimental art games, browser games, tools and demos alongside polished commercial releases. Many discoveries begin with a creator page, a jam ranking or a themed collection rather than a traditional genre chart.

How to search without getting lost
- Start with a collection or game jam. These groupings narrow the field by theme, event or curator and are often more useful than a generic popularity list.
- Open the creator’s page. A developer’s other projects, update history and stated support channels can reveal whether a download is an abandoned prototype or part of an active series.
- Read the project description completely. Look for operating system, architecture, controller, accessibility, save-file and installation details.
- Inspect the pricing model. A project may be free, pay-what-you-want, paid, part of a bundle or offered with separate tiers. Check what each tier includes.
- Confirm the delivery method. The page may offer a browser version, a ZIP archive, a native build, an installer or access through the itch app.
Steam keys and cross-store entitlements
Some itch.io projects include a Steam key, but this is not automatic. Treat the key as a product-specific bonus and verify the wording before purchase. A key can also have redemption limits, regional restrictions or a different update path from the direct itch.io download. If the direct build is your reason for buying, make sure that build is actually listed.
Supporting creators on an open marketplace
Because itch.io centers independent creators, the project page is often the clearest place to see the developer’s own description, funding model and support links. If you want your payment to reach a particular creator, read the page’s revenue and bundle language rather than assuming that every project uses the same arrangement. The store’s openness also means quality, moderation, support response and long-term maintenance vary more than on a selective storefront.
Steam: the benchmark for broad indie discovery
Why Steam is so effective at finding a specific kind of game
Valve’s Steam Discovery Update introduced a Recommendation Feed and Discovery Queue intended to expose a broad variety of titles, including “that interesting indie title.” Steam also lets developers define tags; its Steamworks documentation explains that prominent tags influence similar-game placement and recommendations. Together, these systems turn a very large catalog into a set of searchable signals.
Steam is the practical default when you know only part of what you want: “a short local co-op game with deck-building,” “a Linux-compatible farming game,” or “a horror game under four hours.” Tags, filters, reviews, demos, events and wishlists let you refine that vague request without already knowing the developer’s name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA repeatable Steam discovery workflow
- Describe the experience, not just the genre. Combine tags for mechanics, mood, camera, player count, setting and length. A single broad tag produces too much noise.
- Use the Discovery Queue or Recommendation Feed. Mark games you have played, wishlisted or ignored so the system receives useful signals.
- Check the developer’s tag choices. Tags are not a neutral laboratory measurement; they are metadata used for store placement. Compare them with the description, screenshots and trailer.
- Filter by operating system and features. Confirm Windows, macOS or Linux support, controller compatibility, language, accessibility options and multiplayer mode on the product page.
- Read reviews for failure modes. Sort or scan for recent comments about crashes, save corruption, server populations, controller issues and updates rather than relying on one overall percentage.
- Try the demo when available. A demo can answer performance, input and tone questions more reliably than a store description.
- Wishlist uncertain games. This keeps them visible for updates, events and price changes without forcing an immediate purchase.
How to avoid Steam’s scale becoming noise
Steam’s breadth is its advantage and its challenge. Popularity can crowd out small releases, tags can be inconsistent, and a high review score may hide an experience that does not suit you. Use several independent checks: the tag combination, recent written reviews, developer update notes, the demo and the system-requirements section. Curator lists and event pages can add context, but treat any single list as a starting point rather than a verdict.
Steam’s trade-offs
The store account and client are central to the usual Steam experience. A game may add its own launcher, DRM, external account or always-online requirement, so “on Steam” does not describe a uniform entitlement model. Offline play, mod support, cloud saves, multiplayer and refunds must be confirmed for the particular product and edition.
Epic Games Store: a useful secondary channel
What the official indie category provides
Epic maintains an official Indie Games category, and its free tag can identify free indie games. That gives shoppers a simple path to a focused selection and to no-cost releases when Epic is already part of their library.

- [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
The category is evidence that Epic has an organized indie section; it is not evidence that the store offers stronger curation than GOG or broader experimental coverage than itch.io. Use it for the specific advantages it offers rather than treating the label as a quality ranking.
When to check Epic
- You already use the Epic launcher and want to keep a game in that library.
- A developer lists an Epic-only or Epic-first release.
- You are looking for a free indie game and the store’s free tag fits your search.
- A promotion, regional price or bundle makes the exact title a better purchase there.
What to verify before buying
Open the product page and check whether the game needs the Epic launcher, an additional account or online authentication; whether it supports your operating system; and how multiplayer, updates, saves and refunds work. The presence of an indie category does not answer those technical questions.
Choosing by the factor that matters most
| Your priority | Best first store | Why | Question to ask before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| DRM-free distribution and offline installers | GOG | DRM-free games and a curated selection are core storefront messages | Does this title include a complete offline installer, and how are updates delivered? |
| Unusual, tiny or unfinished projects | itch.io | Open marketplace focused on independent creators, jams and collections | What build, platform and support level does the creator actually provide? |
| Finding a game from tags and recommendations | Steam | Recommendation Feed, Discovery Queue and tag-driven similar-game placement | Do recent reviews and the demo support the tags and system requirements? |
| Free indie browsing or an Epic-exclusive release | Epic Games Store | Official indie category and free-indie filtering | What launcher, account and online requirements apply to this title? |
| Buying from a particular creator | itch.io | Creator pages and project-level descriptions are central to the marketplace | Which tier or bundle includes the build and future updates you want? |
| One large, searchable PC library | Steam | Broad catalog, filters, reviews, wishlists, demos and events | Will this game’s DRM, launcher and multiplayer model suit your setup? |
DRM, launchers and offline play: check the exact product page
DRM is not the same as launcher dependence
DRM controls how a game verifies or limits access; a launcher is the application used to install, update or start it. They can overlap, but they are not identical. A game can use a launcher for convenience without imposing the same restrictions as a separate always-online DRM system, and a DRM-free installer can still need a service for online multiplayer.
A five-minute entitlement check
- Read the store’s feature and requirements panels.
- Search the product description for DRM, third-party account, launcher, online activation and offline-play language.
- Check whether the download is a standalone installer, a client-managed install, a browser build or a ZIP archive.
- Look for multiplayer, server, cloud-save and cross-play notes.
- Save the receipt and installation instructions in case you later need to reinstall without the original client.
Do not generalize from the storefront’s reputation. The title-level information is the relevant evidence for your purchase.
Operating systems, hardware and multiplayer
Windows, macOS and Linux
Store support and game support are separate questions. A client may run on an operating system that a particular game does not support, or a creator may provide a Linux build only as an experimental download. Confirm the exact operating-system label, processor and graphics requirements, architecture and installation instructions on the product page. For itch.io projects, the creator’s notes may be more detailed than a standardized requirements panel.

Look for controller layouts, remapping, text size, color options, subtitle controls and mod instructions before buying if any of these are essential. Mod support can depend on the store’s file layout, the developer’s tools and community documentation; it cannot be inferred from the store name.
Online multiplayer
Multiplayer is particularly title-specific. Verify whether play is peer-to-peer or server-based, whether cross-play is supported, whether an external account is required and whether the community is active on the storefront you are considering. A DRM-free purchase may still need online authentication or a third-party service for multiplayer.

Refunds, regional prices and payment methods
Why a general store comparison is not enough
Refund eligibility, payment methods and regional pricing can change by country, currency, edition and purchase channel. Early access, bundles, keys, gifts and direct creator sales may receive different treatment from a standard purchase. Always read the current terms shown at checkout and keep the order confirmation.
Questions to answer at checkout
- What currency and tax-inclusive total will be charged in your region?
- Is the purchase refundable, and what time or playtime limits apply?
- Does a bundle contain separate products, keys or non-refundable items?
- Will you receive a direct download, a store entitlement, a key for another platform or more than one option?
- Can you pay with your preferred card, wallet or local method?
Because these terms are not uniform across the four stores, the product page and checkout screen are more reliable than a blanket statement about any storefront.
Bundles, demos, early access and free releases
Bundles
Bundles can expose you to several creators at once, but compare the contents, update promises and redemption format. A bundle purchased on one store may not include a key or build on another store, and a creator may distribute future updates only through the original channel.
Demos
Demos are valuable for indie games because they test performance, controls and tone before you commit. Steam surfaces demos prominently during events and on product pages; itch.io creators may publish a separate project or browser version; GOG and Epic availability varies by title. Treat a demo as a technical sample, not a guarantee that the final build will have identical performance.
Early access
Early access is a development status, not a promise of a particular launch date or feature set. Read the roadmap, update history, save-compatibility notes and refund terms. On open marketplaces, the creator’s own page may contain the most useful warning about unfinished content or limited support.
Free games
“Free” can mean a permanently free download, a pay-what-you-want project, a time-limited promotion or a free-to-play release with optional purchases. Confirm which model applies, what content is included and whether the game needs an account or persistent connection.
How to support indie developers intentionally
Buying on the store where a game is sold is the simplest support action, but the meaningful choice is often the exact edition and channel. Read the creator’s description for information about direct downloads, bundles, soundtrack editions, keys and update delivery. If a game is available on multiple stores, choose the one whose entitlement, regional payment method and long-term access fit your needs while respecting the developer’s stated distribution plans.
Best Value
Do not assume that a higher storefront price automatically means a larger developer share, or that a key included with another purchase is equivalent to a direct sale. Revenue and support arrangements vary by store, region, promotion and contract; consult the title’s own sales information when that distinction matters.
A practical decision path
- Define your non-negotiable. Choose DRM-free installers, experimental variety, discovery tools, a specific operating system, multiplayer or a particular payment method.
- Pick the matching first stop. GOG for curated DRM-free options, itch.io for creator-led experiments, Steam for broad search, or Epic for its indie category, free filter or exclusive release.
- Shortlist three to five titles. Use tags, collections, jams, categories, demos and written reviews rather than a single popularity signal.
- Inspect each product page. Confirm platform, hardware, controller and accessibility support, DRM, launcher, account, multiplayer, updates, price and refund terms.
- Test before committing where possible. Install a demo or browser build, or read recent reports about the exact version you plan to buy.
- Buy on the channel that matches your ownership needs. A lower price is not automatically the better deal if the build, update path or online requirements are wrong for you.
- Keep your purchase records. Save receipts, installer files, keys and configuration notes so you can reinstall if a launcher, server or storefront changes.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a store label guarantees a technical feature
“Indie,” “DRM-free,” “free” and “available on Linux” can each describe a narrower condition than you expect. Read the title’s own notes and requirements.
Confusing a high review score with a good match
Reviews summarize other players’ experiences, not your hardware, accessibility needs or tolerance for unfinished content. Look for recent comments about the failure mode that matters to you.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Buying a key without checking what it unlocks
A key may redeem on a different storefront, omit a soundtrack or DLC, expire under bundle rules or follow a separate update path. Verify the redemption platform and included content.
Ignoring the multiplayer community
Cross-play, server population and account requirements can determine whether an otherwise excellent game is playable with your friends. Check the current product notes and community status.
Expecting an open marketplace to have retail-style support
Creator-led projects can be personal, experimental or lightly maintained. Read the creator’s support and update information before treating a prototype like a finished commercial release.
Bottom line: use more than one store
For most readers, the best combination is not a single storefront. Use Steam as the broad discovery engine, GOG when DRM-free installers and curation matter, itch.io when you want work from the edges of independent development, and Epic when its indie category, free filter, promotion or exclusive release gives you a concrete reason to buy there. Compare the exact product pages for entitlement, platform, multiplayer, pricing and refunds every time; the game, not the storefront label, determines the details that affect your purchase.
