Quick verdict
| Controller | Best for | Connection options | Layout and controls | Battery or charging | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller | Lowest-friction Windows compatibility | Bluetooth, USB cable; Xbox Wireless support where available | Asymmetrical sticks, standard Xbox prompts, 3.5 mm headset jack | Up to 40 hours on AA batteries, according to Microsoft; usage varies | Fewer built-in remapping and rear-button features than the specialist alternatives |
| 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless | Steam users who want a dock and extensive customization | 2.4G wireless, Bluetooth, wired USB | Remappable rear and bumper buttons, TMR sticks, trigger controls | Charging dock; TechRadar estimates 10–15 hours | Its strongest feature set is tied to Steam Input and 8BitDo software support |
| Sony DualSense | Players moving between PC and PS5 | USB-C cable or Bluetooth | Symmetrical sticks, touchpad, motion controls, adaptive triggers and haptics where supported | Built-in rechargeable battery; a current capacity or runtime is not stated here | Advanced effects depend on the individual game and may require USB |
| 8BitDo Pro 3 | Budget-conscious player two | 2.4G, Bluetooth, wired USB | Symmetrical sticks, TMR sticks, remapping and trigger locks | Charging dock; TechRadar estimates 15–20 hours | Game and launcher support can still determine whether non-Xbox button prompts appear |
The table separates documented manufacturer specifications from review estimates. The Ultimate 2’s 10–15-hour and Pro 3’s 15–20-hour figures are TechRadar estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. The Xbox figure is Microsoft’s “up to” claim for AA batteries, and actual life depends on use.

Confirm that the game has local co-op
Look at the game’s current PC feature list, store description and in-game multiplayer menu. “Co-op” can mean online-only multiplayer, while couch co-op requires a local mode that accepts two simultaneous inputs. Some action RPGs support local play only in a particular mode, campaign section or console edition. A second controller will not unlock a feature the PC build does not contain.

Check whether the PC version recognizes two controllers
Windows can see two gamepads while a game accepts only one. If the title uses Steam Input, open the game’s controller settings and look for a local multiplayer or multi-controller option. For a non-Steam game, Xbox-compatible input is usually the least troublesome. DualSense and some third-party controllers may need Steam Input or support built into that particular game.
Decide which button prompts you want
Xbox-style prompts show A, B, X and Y. PlayStation-oriented games may show Cross, Circle, Square and Triangle. A controller can function correctly while the on-screen labels differ from the symbols printed on the pad. Steam Input can translate inputs, but it does not guarantee that every game will change its icons.
Plan two independent connections
Two wireless pads compete for radio pairing, USB receivers and nearby Bluetooth devices. A practical arrangement is one Bluetooth controller and one 2.4G-dongle controller, or two wired USB connections when cable length is acceptable. Distinct connection paths reduce pairing confusion; they are a setup recommendation rather than a guarantee for every PC.

Best overall for Windows: two Xbox Wireless Controllers
The Xbox Wireless Controller is the safest default when the priority is simply starting a local co-op game with minimal configuration. Windows 10 and Windows 11 support Bluetooth pairing, and the Xbox layout is the reference layout used by many PC releases. That makes tutorial prompts and menu instructions immediately readable for both players.
Why it suits couch co-op
- Microsoft documents wireless connection to Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS and Android over Bluetooth.
- The integrated 3.5 mm headset jack lets a player connect a headset without a separate audio adapter.
- Microsoft lists up to 40 hours of AA-battery life; the “up to” figure varies with play habits and accessories.
- USB connection remains available when you want a deterministic wired setup or need to avoid wireless pairing.
For two players, identical Xbox pads also simplify troubleshooting: both devices use the same labels, pairing process and expected input type. If your game is not distributed through Steam, this compatibility advantage is especially valuable.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Trade-offs
AA batteries are replaceable, but they are not as tidy as placing both controllers on a charging dock. The standard design also does not provide the Ultimate 2’s rear buttons, profiles or TMR-stick hardware. Choose it for predictable game recognition rather than for advanced customization.
Best Steam-focused option: two 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controllers
The Ultimate 2 is the feature-rich choice for a Steam library. 8BitDo states: “All features fully supported by Steam Input. Works across your whole Steam Library – no third party drivers needed. Just plug and play.” Steam Input still depends on each game’s control implementation, but the controller is designed around that ecosystem.
Hardware that matters in action RPGs
- TMR joysticks are intended to provide durable, precise stick sensing.
- Rear buttons and bumper buttons can be remapped for actions such as dodge, potion or lock-on without removing a thumb from a stick.
- Trigger controls let you tailor how far a trigger travels, which can help when a game uses both analog and digital trigger actions.
- The package includes a charging dock, so two controllers can have a consistent storage and charging routine.
- 2.4G wireless and wired connections support 1000Hz polling, according to 8BitDo’s manufacturer specification. Its 1 ms latency and 10 m range claims are ideal-environment laboratory figures, not a promise for every room or PC.
TechRadar estimates 10–15 hours of battery life for the Ultimate 2. Treat that as a review estimate rather than a fixed specification. Keeping the controllers on their dock between sessions matters more than chasing a precise runtime.
When not to choose it
If you regularly launch older, non-Steam PC games, an Xbox-layout controller may require less translation and troubleshooting. The Ultimate 2 can connect in several ways, but connection flexibility does not make every game display the correct button prompts or accept every remapping.
Best for PS5 owners and supported haptics: two Sony DualSense controllers
DualSense is the natural pair when both players already use PlayStation 5 or when the PC games you play specifically implement PlayStation features. Sony documents connection to Windows PC by USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth. The symmetrical-stick layout is familiar to PlayStation users and to anyone who prefers both sticks on the same horizontal line.

What you gain
- Adaptive triggers can change resistance during supported actions.
- Haptic feedback can provide more detailed vibration than a conventional rumble motor in supported games.
- The touchpad and motion sensors are available to games that implement them.
- USB-C and Bluetooth allow you to choose a wired or wireless setup for each player.
Sony’s advanced effects are conditional. A PC game must explicitly support DualSense features, and Sony notes that some advanced functionality may require a USB connection. In an unsupported title, the controller generally behaves as a conventional gamepad and may show Xbox-style prompts through the game’s input layer.
Practical two-player considerations
Two Bluetooth DualSense controllers can work, but a USB cable for one or both players removes a layer of pairing and radio troubleshooting. Check the game’s PC support notes before buying specifically for adaptive triggers or haptics; controller hardware alone cannot add those effects.
Best budget alternative: two 8BitDo Pro 3 controllers
The Pro 3 is a credible choice when the second player needs a capable pad without moving to a premium feature set. TechRadar names it a best budget PC controller and reports 2.4G, Bluetooth and wired operation, TMR sticks, trigger locks, remapping, a symmetrical layout and a charging dock.
Why it works for player two
- Three connection methods make it easier to fit a mixed two-player setup around the PC’s available ports and radios.
- TMR sticks and trigger locks bring hardware features often reserved for more expensive controllers.
- Remapping can put a frequently used action on a more accessible button.
- The symmetrical layout suits players coming from PlayStation-style controllers.
- TechRadar estimates 15–20 hours of battery life; this is a review estimate, not a manufacturer runtime guarantee.
Use the Pro 3 when broad connectivity and customization matter more than having every game default to Xbox prompts. For a non-Steam game that expects XInput, test the controller’s selected mode before committing to a two-pad purchase.
Xbox layout versus symmetrical sticks
Asymmetrical Xbox layout
The Xbox arrangement places the left stick above the directional pad and the right stick below the face buttons. It is the layout most Windows action RPG tutorials assume when they say “press the left stick” or show A/B/X/Y. Players who switch between many PC games usually spend less time translating prompts.

Symmetrical DualSense and Pro 3 layout
DualSense and Pro 3 place both sticks in line with each other. This is a preference decision rather than a performance ranking. Choose it when both players already use that arrangement or when the game’s interface and your muscle memory are built around PlayStation-style controls.
Ultimate 2 customization
The Ultimate 2’s remappable rear and bumper buttons are useful when an action RPG combines camera control, dodge, attack, item and lock-on commands. Assignments should be made per player and checked in the game’s control screen; an input profile that helps one game can make another confusing.
How to connect and test two controllers on Windows
Option 1: pair one or both over Bluetooth
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices in Windows 10 or Windows 11 and turn Bluetooth on.
- Put the first controller into its Bluetooth pairing mode, then choose Add device > Bluetooth and select the controller when it appears.
- Repeat the process for the second controller. Give each player a few seconds to move a stick or press a button so you can identify which device is which.
- Open the gamepad test or controller page in Windows or Steam and confirm that both devices respond independently.
Option 2: use a 2.4G receiver
- Connect each controller’s compatible 2.4G receiver directly to the PC or to a powered USB hub with a clear line of sight where possible.
- Switch each controller to its 2.4G mode and pair it with its receiver according to the controller’s instructions.
- Keep the two receivers separated from high-interference USB devices when practical, then test both pads before launching the game.
A mixed setup—one Bluetooth pad and one 2.4G pad—can make it obvious which controller belongs to which player and reduce Bluetooth pairing confusion.
Option 3: use two USB cables
- Connect each controller with a known data-capable USB cable; charge-only cables will not carry input.
- Wait for Windows to finish installing or identifying each device.
- Open the game’s controller configuration and verify that both pads are listed before starting local co-op.
Wired connections are the most deterministic choice when cable length is acceptable. They avoid battery management and most wireless interference, but two players need enough slack to sit comfortably.
Configure both controllers in Steam
- Open Steam and choose Steam > Settings > Controller.
- Check that both controllers appear in the detected-controller list. If one is missing, reconnect it before opening the game.
- Open the action RPG’s library page, select the controller icon or Manage > Controller layout, and review the active Steam Input configuration.
- Start the game only after both pads are detected. Enter its local multiplayer or co-op menu and assign one controller to each player.
- Test movement, camera, attack, dodge and menu navigation for both players. Some games assign the first detected pad automatically and require a second player to press a button on the title or character-select screen.
Steam Input can translate a controller’s physical inputs, but the game still controls its own local-player logic and on-screen prompts. If the title behaves incorrectly, try its per-game controller setting rather than changing the global Steam setting for every game.

Connection and battery routine for regular couch co-op
With AA-powered Xbox controllers
Keep a spare set of AA batteries available or use rechargeable AA cells. Replace or recharge both players’ batteries before a long session rather than waiting for a low-battery warning during a boss fight. The documented “up to 40 hours” figure is a maximum-use claim, not a guaranteed session length.
With docked rechargeable controllers
Place both Ultimate 2 or Pro 3 controllers on their dock after play and check that each charging indicator is active. A docked routine prevents the common problem where player two’s controller is found only after the game has already started. If a controller fails to wake, connect it by USB first, confirm input, then retry its wireless mode.
With DualSense
Keep a USB-C cable nearby even when you normally use Bluetooth. It is useful for charging, for troubleshooting and for PC games whose advanced haptics or adaptive triggers require USB.

Troubleshooting two-player problems
Only one controller appears
- Close the game, reconnect both controllers and verify both in Steam before relaunching.
- For Bluetooth, remove the unresponsive controller from Settings > Bluetooth & devices, put it back into pairing mode and add it again.
- For 2.4G, reconnect the receiver and confirm that the controller is in 2.4G rather than Bluetooth or wired mode.
- Try two USB connections to determine whether the issue is wireless pairing or game-level support.
Both controllers move player one
The game may not support local co-op, may require a “join” button on the second pad, or may be assigning both devices through one virtual Steam Input layout. Check the game’s local multiplayer menu and its per-game controller configuration. Do not assume that Windows seeing two devices means the game can create two players.
The prompts do not match the buttons
Prompt icons are controlled by the game and its input layer. Switch to an Xbox-compatible mode where the controller supports one, enable Steam Input for that game, or teach each player the displayed symbols. A mismatch is inconvenient but does not necessarily indicate a faulty controller.
Wireless input feels unreliable
- Move a 2.4G receiver away from crowded USB ports and metal obstructions.
- Charge rechargeable controllers or replace weak AA batteries.
- Test one controller at a time to identify whether the issue affects a particular pad or the PC’s wireless environment.
- Use wired USB for both players if you need the most predictable connection.
DualSense effects are missing
Confirm that the PC game lists DualSense support, connect by USB, and check whether its settings expose haptics or adaptive triggers. Unsupported games will not gain those effects through a controller setting alone.
Which pair should you buy?
Choose Xbox Wireless Controllers if
- You play a wide mix of Windows games, including non-Steam titles.
- You want the highest probability of familiar prompts and immediate recognition.
- You prefer replaceable AA batteries and need a headset jack on each pad.
Choose 8BitDo Ultimate 2 controllers if
- Steam is your main launcher.
- You want a charging dock, TMR sticks, rear buttons and trigger customization.
- You are comfortable checking Steam Input and per-game layouts.
Choose DualSense controllers if
- Both players already use PS5 or prefer symmetrical sticks.
- Your target PC games explicitly support DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers.
- You are willing to use USB when a game requires it for advanced effects.
Choose 8BitDo Pro 3 controllers if
- The second controller must be flexible across 2.4G, Bluetooth and wired connections.
- You want TMR sticks, remapping, trigger locks and a dock at a budget-oriented tier.
- You can verify the target game’s input mode and prompt behavior before buying.
For an unknown library and the fewest surprises, two Xbox Wireless Controllers remain the sensible starting point. For a Steam-first library where dock charging and custom controls are worth extra setup attention, two Ultimate 2 controllers are the stronger specialist choice.
