Best Over-Ear Headphones for Working Out: Exercise-Focused Picks and Buying Guide

Beats 360 is the clearest match for an over-ear workout headphone because its maker explicitly designed it for running, training and workouts and gives it an IPX4 sweat-and-water-resistance rating. That does not make it ideal for every athlete. Over-ear cups can move during sprints or jumping, become hot, and hold sweat against padding. RTINGS says most over-ear headphones are not designed to stay secure during training, while some people still prefer their comfort and sound for walking, lifting, cycling or moderate gym sessions. Choose the model according to how much your head moves, how much sweat it will see, and whether you need strong noise isolation or simply a comfortable wireless headset.

The comparison below separates documented protection from marketing language, identifies where each model works best, and explains when earbuds or open-ear headphones are a smarter category. Prices and availability are dated where stated; retailer listings, warranties and specifications can change.

Are over-ear headphones a good choice for exercise?

Over-ear headphones surround the ear instead of sealing the ear canal. That can make long listening sessions feel less intrusive than in-ear buds, and large cups can deliver convincing bass and active noise cancellation. The trade-off is physical stability: a headband and ear cushions have more mass to control when you run, jump or perform rapid repetitions.

RTINGS’ workout guide, updated July 8, 2026, cautions that most over-ears are not built specifically to remain secure during training. It also notes three practical concerns:

  • App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
  • Movement: fast changes of direction, burpees, box jumps and vigorous running can make cups shift or fall.
  • Heat and moisture: a closed cushion can make your ears warmer and trap sweat around padding and electronics.
  • Warranty language: some manufacturers exclude damage caused by exercise or liquid exposure even when a product is advertised as sweat resistant.

Over-ears make the most sense for light to moderate movement, strength training with controlled head motion, walking, stationary cycling and sessions where comfort and isolation matter more than absolute stability. For outdoor runs, repeated jumping or high-intensity circuits, compare their fit honestly with sports earbuds or open-ear designs before buying.

Match the headphone to the workout

Workout pattern What to prioritize Over-ear outlook
Walking, warm-ups and mobility work Comfort, battery life and easy controls Usually a good fit if the headband stays comfortable.
Weight training and machines Stable clamp, low heat and cushions that can be cleaned Often suitable; check interference with benches, helmets or headrests.
Stationary bike or moderate cardio Sweat protection, secure cups and awareness of surroundings Possible with a documented rating and a stable fit.
Sprints, jumping and HIIT Very secure retention, low weight and moisture control Many over-ears will move; test carefully or choose a sports-earbud category.
Outdoor running near traffic Stable fit plus the ability to hear nearby vehicles and people Noise-cancelling over-ears may block too much sound; open-ear designs deserve consideration.

There is no population-level study proving that one over-ear model is safest for every sport. The picks below are product and review findings, not a guarantee that a particular headset will stay put on your head.

Best options compared

RTINGS provides the broadest side-by-side workout testing in its workout guide. Beats 360 is included because its manufacturer explicitly positions it for exercise; the other models are alternatives for different priorities.

Model Exercise-relevant protection and fit Battery figure and test owner Best for Important limitations
Beats 360 IPX4 sweat and water resistance claimed by Beats; workout-focused design, adjustable sliders and independently rotating cups Up to 32 hours; Beats and Tom’s Guide, 2026 Readers who specifically want an over-ear model marketed for training No wear detection, no 3.5 mm jack or charger; noise cancellation is not always as strong as Bose or Sony in comparisons
Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless Comfortable, tactile controls and a stable fit in RTINGS’ testing except during high-intensity movement; no workout water rating stated 26 hours; RTINGS, 2026 Moderate exercise with a priority on comfort and isolation Can lose stability during very vigorous activity; no documented IP rating in the cited comparison
Nothing Headphone (a) IP52 rating and better stability than the Bose during more mobile exercises in RTINGS’ testing 79.25 hours measured; RTINGS, 2026 Long battery life and a more affordable mid-range approach Bose has the edge for noise isolation and comfort; IP52 is protection information, not a promise of workout-proof construction
TREBLAB Z7 Pro Wireless IPX4 rating; RTINGS reports usable stability for exercise More than 37 hours with ANC activated; RTINGS, 2026 Listeners seeking long ANC runtime with a water rating RTINGS observed superficial coating damage and no companion app for sound tuning
Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024 No IP certification; recommended by RTINGS for moderate movement 49 hours; RTINGS, 2026 Budget buyers who want long battery life and app-based EQ Do not treat it as sweat protected; avoid heavy-sweat or high-impact sessions

Battery figures are not directly interchangeable: Beats’ number is a manufacturer maximum, while the RTINGS values are measured results under that review’s conditions. Noise cancellation, volume, codec, phone connection and use of microphones can all change actual runtime.

Beats 360: the most exercise-specific over-ear choice

Beats’ official product page says, “Built for running, training and working out, Beats 360 is the first over-ear Beats headphone with sweat and water resistance (IPX4 rating).” That is a manufacturer claim, so treat the workout positioning and resistance rating as stated specifications rather than an independent durability test. The product page is at Beats 360 — Sweat- and Water-Resistant Over-Ear Headphones.

IPX4 means protection from water splashing from any direction under the applicable rating test. It is not waterproofing, does not authorize swimming or showering, and does not establish how the headset will tolerate a particular person’s sweat chemistry. Wipe the headset after use and keep it away from submerged water.

Fit and hardware features

The design uses adjustable stainless-steel sliders and independently rotating earcups, which help you set the clamp and cup angle before a session. Interchangeable earcup and headband cushions are useful because padding is the part most likely to absorb sweat and wear. Active noise cancellation is included, but exercise users should be deliberate about when they enable it outdoors.

The stated maximum battery life is up to 32 hours, and Tom’s Guide reported the same figure while using ANC and Spatial Audio in its 2026 review. The review also reported a U.S. price of $349.99 and $49 replacement cushion sets at the time of publication; both amounts are market- and date-specific rather than guaranteed current prices. See Tom’s Guide’s Beats 360 review for that pricing and testing context.

What you give up

Tom’s Guide found no wear detection, so playback will not automatically pause when you remove the headset. There is no 3.5 mm audio jack and no charger in the box, which matters if you use wired gym equipment or expect a dedicated charging brick. The review also found Bose better at reducing aircraft-engine noise and noted that Sony’s compared models include wear detection. Those are specific comparisons, not a universal ranking of every product from either brand.

For a gym user who wants one over-ear headset with a documented IP rating, replaceable padding and an exercise-first message, Beats 360 is the most direct fit in this group. It remains a poor choice if your routine involves constant jumping and the cups cannot be made stable on your head.

Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless: comfort and isolation for controlled workouts

RTINGS names the Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless its tested top over-ear workout pick. Its strengths in that comparison are a comfortable build, effective noise isolation, tactile physical controls and a fit that stayed stable during ordinary exercise. The main boundary was high-intensity movement, where the cups could shift. RTINGS reports a 26-hour battery result for this model in its 2026 guide: RTINGS’ over-ear workout comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the option to consider when your sessions are mostly lifting, machines, walking or moderate cardio and you value easy button control over a touch surface. The cited comparison does not provide an IP certification for the model, so do not infer sweat protection from the brand name or from its comfortable padding. If you sweat heavily, the absence of a documented rating should change where and how you use it.

Nothing Headphone (a): stability and exceptional measured runtime

RTINGS reports that Nothing Headphone (a) has an IP52 rating and stayed more stable than the Bose during more mobile exercises in its testing. It also measured 79.25 hours of battery life, the longest figure in this comparison. That combination suits someone who dislikes frequent charging and needs better retention than a comfort-first model provides.

Its compromises are equally important. RTINGS gives Bose the advantage in noise isolation and comfort, so the Nothing model is not automatically the better choice for a noisy gym or a long, pressure-free session. An IP52 rating supplies a standardized protection description, but it does not make the headset immune to sweat, nor does it replace cleaning and drying after use.

TREBLAB Z7 Pro Wireless: a rated option with long ANC use

The TREBLAB Z7 Pro Wireless carries an IPX4 rating, and RTINGS reports more than 37 hours of battery life with active noise cancellation enabled. That makes it a candidate for users who want a documented water-resistance level and long sessions without disabling ANC.

RTINGS also observed superficial coating damage and found no companion app for sound tuning. If you rely on an equalizer to reduce bass during podcasts or compensate for a bright recording, the lack of app-based adjustment is a practical limitation. Inspect the finish periodically and avoid interpreting an IPX4 label as permission to leave the headset wet in a gym bag.

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024: budget choice for moderate movement

RTINGS recommends the Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024 for moderate movement and reports a 49-hour battery figure. Its app-based EQ lets you alter the sound for music, spoken instructions or training videos, which is useful at a lower price point.

The model has no IP certification. That omission is more consequential than a small difference in bass response: there is no documented ingress rating to rely on when sweat reaches the cups. Keep this headset for lighter sessions, wipe it promptly, and do not select it for wet or high-impact training simply because its battery lasts a long time.

How to choose an over-ear workout headphone

1. Start with movement and retention

Put stability ahead of codec support or maximum volume. The headband should sit securely without creating a headache, and the cups should remain centered when you look down, turn your head and perform the fastest movement in your routine. A model that is comfortable while seated can still slide when you run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Adjust both sliders evenly so the headband rests on the crown rather than behind it.
  • Check that the cushions surround the ears completely; partial contact creates pressure points and a weaker seal.
  • Perform several controlled nods, side-to-side turns and light hops before taking the headset onto a treadmill.
  • Stop if the clamp causes pain, if the cups rock, or if you need to touch the headset repeatedly to keep it in place.

2. Treat IP ratings as a floor, not a guarantee

IP codes are more standardized than a vague “sweatproof” label, according to RTINGS, but they still describe defined water and dust exposure rather than every workout condition. A water rating is not a sweat-specific durability test. Salt, sunscreen, skin oils, condensation and repeated drying cycles can affect materials differently.

Among these models, Beats 360 and TREBLAB Z7 Pro Wireless carry IPX4 claims, Nothing Headphone (a) carries IP52, and Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024 has no IP certification stated in the comparison. Use those distinctions to set expectations, not to rank one headset as invulnerable.

3. Decide how much isolation you actually need

ANC can make a fan, treadmill or weight-room music less distracting, but maximum isolation is not desirable near traffic, cyclists or training partners. Use transparency or ambient modes where available, keep volume moderate, and remove one cup only if the design and your activity make that safe. A model’s ability to silence an airplane engine does not prove it will remain stable during a sprint.

4. Compare battery figures under comparable conditions

Look for the test owner and listening mode attached to every runtime figure. A manufacturer’s “up to” number usually assumes specific settings and may exceed real use. ANC, Spatial Audio, high volume, calls and cold weather can reduce endurance. If a long workout schedule matters, choose a headset with enough reserve that you are not charging in a damp locker room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Plan for padding replacement

Sweat eventually affects synthetic leather, foam and adhesives. Swappable cushions can extend the useful life of a headset and make hygiene easier. Beats confirms interchangeable cushions for Beats 360, and Tom’s Guide reported replacement sets at the price listed in the comparison table. Confirm compatibility and current availability before ordering because accessory stock and prices change.

Workout setup: a repeatable pre-session procedure

  1. Charge and update at home. Pair the headset, install any companion app, set the desired EQ and check that ANC or transparency controls work before entering the gym.
  2. Inspect the cushions and ports. Do not start with visibly damp padding, debris in a charging port or a loose slider.
  3. Fit while standing. Set the headband and cup angle in the posture you will use for exercise, then move your head through the largest range expected.
  4. Choose the awareness mode. Use less isolation when you need to hear traffic, staff, alarms or a training partner. Keep the volume low enough to hear an unexpected warning.
  5. Test the first set. Perform a short, low-risk version of the workout. If the cups shift, fix the fit before adding speed or weight.
  6. Dry after training. Wipe cushions and the headband with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then let the headset air out before placing it in a case. Do not seal wet padding in a bag.

Cleaning, storage and warranty precautions

RTINGS warns that sweat can degrade padding over time and trap moisture near components. Air the headset between sessions, wipe it after each workout and avoid saturating the cushions with cleaning liquid. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for the exact material; aggressive solvents can damage coatings and adhesives.

Keep the headset out of direct heat while it dries. Do not charge it until the charging port is dry, and do not use a hair dryer to accelerate the process. If a cushion becomes misshapen, cracked or permanently odorous, replacement pads are usually a better hygiene solution than continuing to soak the original foam.

Read the warranty exclusions before relying on an exercise rating. “Water resistant” does not necessarily mean liquid damage is covered, and a warranty may distinguish ordinary perspiration from immersion or misuse. Save the receipt and record the model and purchase date in case you need support.

When sports earbuds or open-ear headphones are the better answer

If your workout includes sustained running, repeated jumping or rapid lateral movement, a secure ear-hook earbud can hold position with less mass than an over-ear cup. TechRadar’s 2026 running guide emphasizes ear-hook stability as a running advantage: TechRadar’s best running headphones guide.

For outdoor exercise where hearing vehicles, bicycles or conversation is essential, open-ear and bone-conduction designs can leave the ear canal unobstructed. Woman & Home’s 2025 exercise-headphone guide discusses those categories alongside conventional sports models: Woman & Home’s exercise-headphone guide. These alternatives are not proof that over-ears are unsafe; they simply solve stability and awareness problems differently.

A forum question phrased the search as “best over ear headphones for the gym” and asked about “Sweat resistence” [sic]. That wording reflects an individual request, not a market statistic, but it captures the two checks every buyer should make: will the headset stay on, and is its moisture protection documented?

Price, availability and buying timing

Tom’s Guide reported Beats 360 at $349.99 in the United States during its 2026 review and listed availability through Apple, Beats and major third-party retailers. That is a dated U.S. price, not a guarantee of today’s price, stock or seller quality. The same review reported $49 replacement cushion sets; confirm the exact kit and compatibility before purchase.

The cited RTINGS comparison does not establish current retail prices for Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless, Nothing Headphone (a), TREBLAB Z7 Pro Wireless or Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024. Compare the live price, return period, regional warranty and replacement-pad cost at checkout. Do not assume that a lower price includes a charger, wired cable or a water-damage warranty.

Final verdict

Choose Beats 360 when you specifically want an over-ear design marketed for workouts, a documented IPX4 rating and replaceable cushions, and your routine is not dominated by violent head movement. Choose Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless for comfort and isolation during controlled exercise, Nothing Headphone (a) for the strongest measured battery result and comparatively stable movement, TREBLAB Z7 Pro Wireless for IPX4 plus long ANC operation, or Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024 for moderate workouts where low cost and app EQ matter more than water protection. If you run, jump or train outdoors at high intensity, compare a secure earbud or open-ear option before committing to an over-ear headset.
