Best overall for calls: the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the strongest-supported choice among conventional boomless, noise-cancelling over-ear headphones. What Hi-Fi? names it its best over-ear option for calls, and TechRadar gives it the lead among standard noise-cancelling headphones it has tested for noisy environments. Those are review conclusions, not a guarantee for every voice, room, fit or conferencing app.

If you spend most of the day speaking in a loud shared office, also consider a dedicated UC headset with a microphone closer to your mouth. A headset that sounds quiet to you through active noise cancellation (ANC) does not necessarily send a clean voice to other people. The five options below therefore combine one call-first recommendation, three consumer alternatives with different priorities, and a separate work-headset route rather than pretending all five form a rigorously tested ranking.

Quick verdict: which over-ear call headset fits your use?

Pick Best use What is established Important qualification
Sony WH-1000XM6 Best conventional over-ear choice for calls What Hi-Fi? and TechRadar both report strong call performance; Sony specifies an adaptive microphone system and up to 24 hours of continuous communication with noise cancelling enabled. Reviewer results vary with voice, app, fit and room; battery figures are Sony maximum ratings.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) ANC-led flagship alternative Bose lists up to 30 hours of charge life, with less when Immersive Audio is enabled. The available Bose support result was a search excerpt that could not be opened, so check the specification for your region before relying on the figure.
Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless Sound-oriented comparison An RTINGS comparison treats it as an over-ear competitor and describes Sony’s microphone system as more capable in that comparison. The available evidence does not establish it as a top call pick; verify current detailed specifications separately.
Apple AirPods Max Apple-device ecosystem comparison What Hi-Fi? includes it among close rivals in its call assessment and reports that it did not match the Sony in that test. The cited material does not establish platform-specific performance or long-session comfort claims.
Jabra Evolve3 85 or Poly Voyager Surround 80 UC Dedicated office-headset path A 2025 comparison chart places these work headsets alongside consumer ANC models; near-mouth microphones are a sensible category to investigate when transmitted speech is critical. The chart is not a controlled test and does not settle model performance, certification, availability or value.

Use the table as a decision map, not as a claim that every model has undergone the same call test. The Sony is the only entry with two independent review sources in this material pointing to a clear call lead.

Why the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the call-first recommendation

Independent call assessments point in the same direction

What Hi-Fi? says its reviewers checked call quality and identifies the WH-1000XM6 as its best over-ear call option. TechRadar independently names it the strongest call option among the standard noise-cancelling headphones it tested, including situations with background noise. Agreement between those two reviews is why the Sony earns the first position here. It is still an observed review outcome, not a promise that every caller will sound identical through every service.

#1 Best Overall
Sony WH-1000XM6 The Best Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones, Black | HD NC Processor QN3, 12 Microphones, Adaptive NC Optimizer, Mastered by Engineers, Studio-Quality, Up to 30 Hrs of Battery
  • THE BEST NOISE CANCELLATION: Powered by advanced processors and an adaptive microphone system, the WH-1000XM6 headphones deliver real-time noise cancellation for an immersive, distraction-free listening experience.
  • CO-CREATED WITH MASTERING AUDIO ENGINEERS: Developed in collaboration with world-renowned mastering audio engineers, these headphones deliver unparalleled sound clarity and precision. A specially designed driver with a lightweight carbon fiber dome delivers high fidelity sound, where rich vocals and every instrument remains pure and balanced. Optimized for advanced noise cancellation, the WH-1000XM6 headphones keep every frequency crisp and true to the artist’s intent.
  • HD NOISE CANCELING PROCESSOR QN3: The HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3 is 7x faster than the QN1 (found in our WH-1000XM5 headphones), optimizing 12 microphones in real time for superior noise cancellation, sound quality, and call clarity. With more microphones than ever, we can precisely detect external noise and counteracts it with opposite soundwaves, delivering a new level of noise cancellation.
  • ULTRA-CLEAR CALLS, FROM ANYWHERE: A six-microphone AI-based beamforming system, intelligent noise reduction technology, and wind-resistant design, work together to isolate your voice, filter out background noise, and ensure every word comes through crisp and clear—even in the busiest environments.
  • COMPACT CARRYING CASE & FOLDABLE DESIGN: Crafted for durability and style, the foldable design features precision metalwork and a compact case with a magnetic closure—ready to go wherever you do.

The distinction matters because a headphone can make incoming audio beautifully quiet while its outbound microphones still capture nearby speech, keyboard clatter or ventilation. TechRadar explains that microphone processing must separate the wearer’s voice from ambient sound that reaches the microphones. That is a harder problem than reducing noise for the person wearing the headphones.

What Sony says the microphone system does

Sony describes the WH-1000XM6 as an over-ear model with an adaptive microphone system. Its support guidance says: “The WH-1000XM6 headphones are designed to capture the user’s speech from multiple microphones using AI beamforming and noise reduction algorithms, delivering it to the other person on the call.” This is Sony’s description of the design, not an independent measurement of how much noise it removes.

Sony also advises seating the earpads snugly and keeping the rear microphone uncovered. Those two details are practical: a loose seal can reduce the consistency of the headset’s processing, and a covered microphone can change what the array hears. Hair, glasses arms, a hood or a hand resting near the cup can therefore affect a result that was good in a review.

Communication battery life, not just music playback

Sony rates continuous communication at up to 24 hours with noise cancelling on and up to 28 hours with it off. These are manufacturer maximums for the current product generation, not observed endurance from a particular call schedule. Actual time changes with volume, Bluetooth behavior, microphone activity, temperature and whether other features are enabled. For a workday dominated by meetings, the 24-hour ANC-on figure gives substantial headroom, but it should not be read as a guaranteed number of meeting hours.

Mute behavior can depend on the app

Sony notes that the headset’s microphone-mute status may not synchronize with some call applications. If the headset indicates mute while the conferencing app shows an active microphone, trust the application’s on-screen state and test it before an important meeting. A physical control that works reliably in one service can behave differently in another because mute signaling is partly controlled by the software.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): an ANC-led alternative

Where it belongs in this list

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are a sensible comparison when your priority is flagship noise cancellation and a broad set of listening features, but the available evidence does not show them beating the Sony for calls. Keep that distinction clear: they are an alternative to investigate, not a second-place call ranking supported by the sources here.

Battery figure and its limitation

Bose lists up to 30 hours of charge life for this generation and states that Immersive Audio reduces the maximum playback time. The support result available for that specification was a regional search excerpt that could not be opened successfully, so confirm the exact figure, feature conditions and regional wording on Bose’s current support page before purchase. Treat 30 hours as a manufacturer ceiling rather than a promise for continuous conferencing with every feature enabled.

Questions to answer before choosing Bose

  • Does your meeting workload benefit more from Bose’s listening and ANC priorities than from the Sony’s independently reported call lead?
  • Will you use Immersive Audio often enough that its lower endurance matters during a long day?
  • Can you test your voice in the conferencing app you actually use, in the room where you take calls?

Those checks keep an ANC preference from being mistaken for proof of superior transmitted speech. No controlled comparison in the available material establishes a Bose-versus-Sony microphone winner.

Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless: compare sound without assuming call leadership

What the comparison evidence says

RTINGS’ comparison search result names the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless as an over-ear competitor and describes Sony’s microphone system as more capable in that comparison. That supports including Sennheiser for readers who want to weigh music performance alongside calls, but it does not support labeling the MOMENTUM 4 a top call pick.

How to evaluate it fairly

Listen to a recording made in a quiet room and then in moderate background noise. Ask the other participant whether consonants remain distinct, whether your voice becomes metallic or compressed, and whether nearby conversation leaks through. Also check whether the earcups stay comfortable for your normal call block. These are the same tests you should apply to any consumer headphone; the point is to avoid converting a sound-quality preference into an unsupported microphone verdict.

Detailed current Sennheiser specifications, software behavior and platform compatibility are not established by the material used here. Confirm those items for the exact regional model and firmware before treating them as buying advantages.

Apple AirPods Max: an ecosystem-led comparison option

Why it appears here

What Hi-Fi? includes AirPods Max among the close rivals in its call-quality assessment and reports that they did not match the Sony in that test. They remain relevant for readers already invested in Apple devices who want to compare the overall experience of a premium over-ear design, but the cited evidence does not justify a platform-specific call score.

Rank #3
Sony WH-1000XM5 Premium Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones, Midnight Blue | Auto NC Optimizer, Up to 30 Hrs of Battery, Carrying Case, Crystal Clear Calls, Touch Control, Multipoint Connection
  • PREMIUM NOISE CANCELLATION: Two processors control 8 microphones for unprecedented noise cancellation. With Auto NC Optimizer, noise canceling is automatically optimized based on your wearing conditions and environment.
  • MAGNIFICENT SOUND: Engineered to perfection with the new Integrated Processor V1.
  • CRYSTAL CLEAR HANDS-FREE CALLING: 4 beamforming microphones, precise voice pickup, and advanced audio signal processing.
  • LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
  • ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.

Check your actual device mix

Before choosing any ecosystem-oriented headset, list the devices you will use for calls: phone, laptop, tablet and any office computer. Then verify that the features you care about behave consistently across those devices and your conferencing application. Do not assume that a feature demonstrated on one operating system will have identical controls or status reporting elsewhere. The available call assessment does not provide enough detail to make a universal compatibility or comfort claim for AirPods Max.

Dedicated office headsets: Jabra Evolve3 85 and Poly Voyager Surround 80 UC

Why a near-mouth microphone can change the decision

For a loud shared office, transmitted speech may matter more than how quiet the room sounds to you. TechRadar explains that a microphone nearer the mouth can give the processing a stronger voice signal to work with. That is the core reason to investigate a dedicated UC headset instead of limiting the search to boomless consumer headphones.

A 2025 competitive comparison chart places the Jabra Evolve3 85 and Poly Voyager Surround 80 UC alongside consumer ANC products. The chart is not a controlled independent call test, and the available material does not establish which of the two performs better, which platforms are certified in your region, or whether either offers better value than the consumer choices above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to verify with an office headset

  • Whether the boom or near-mouth microphone can be positioned consistently without touching your face or clothing.
  • Certification for the conferencing platform used by your employer, rather than generic Bluetooth compatibility alone.
  • How mute is signaled in the headset and in the application, including whether taking the boom up actually mutes the software.
  • Comfort, clamp pressure and heat during your longest meeting block.
  • Wireless range and charging behavior at your desk, especially if you move between rooms.

These checks are more useful than assigning either model an unverified fifth-place rank. The evidence supports the category choice, not a winner between the named office products.

How ANC and microphone noise reduction differ

ANC protects what you hear

Active noise cancellation creates an opposing signal to reduce external sound in the earcups. Its success is experienced by the wearer: a train, fan or open-plan office may seem quieter. A good seal also limits some passive leakage. None of that proves what the microphone sends outward.

Microphone processing protects what others hear

The microphones hear a mixture of your voice and the surrounding room. Beamforming and noise-reduction algorithms attempt to emphasize the voice, but a nearby talker can occupy a similar frequency range and arrive at the microphones from a difficult angle. A headset can therefore deliver excellent ANC while still allowing a colleague’s words through to the call. Conversely, a dedicated headset with a microphone close to your mouth may transmit speech clearly even if its earcup ANC is less impressive.

Rank #4
Sony WH-1000XM5 Premium Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones, Black | Auto NC Optimizer, Up to 30 Hrs of Battery, Carrying Case, Crystal Clear Calls, Touch Control, Multipoint Connection

  • MAGNIFICENT SOUND: Engineered to perfection with the new Integrated Processor V1.

  • ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.

When call clarity is the deciding factor, ask a friend to listen while you test in the actual room. Have them describe whether words remain natural, whether endings of words disappear, and whether background voices are distracting. A quiet sidetone or a quiet room on your side is not a substitute for that listener feedback.

A practical test before you keep any headset

  1. Use the real app and device. Pair the headset with the phone or computer you use for work, then open the conferencing service rather than relying on a generic Bluetooth call.
  2. Record a quiet sample. Speak at your normal meeting volume for 30 to 60 seconds. Listen for clear consonants, pumping noise reduction and an unnatural, distant tone.
  3. Add moderate background noise. Run a fan, sit near a hallway or have another person speak at a normal distance. Do not use a deliberately extreme test that does not resemble your workplace.
  4. Ask a listener for specific feedback. Have the other person report intelligibility, room noise, distortion and whether your voice level changes when you turn your head.
  5. Repeat with your normal fit. Wear your glasses, hairstyle, hat or work clothes. For the Sony, seat both earpads snugly and leave the rear microphone uncovered, as Sony advises.
  6. Check mute in both places. Press the headset control and confirm the application’s mute indicator changes. If they disagree, use the application control during meetings.
  7. Measure a realistic work block. Wear the headset through your longest typical call sequence and note pressure, heat, battery percentage and any dropouts.

This process exposes fit and software problems that a specification sheet cannot predict.

Buying criteria that matter for calls

Transmitted speech in the noise you actually face

Give the greatest weight to how other people hear you in quiet and moderate noise. Ask whether nearby voices are suppressed without making your own speech sound clipped or robotic. A microphone that is excellent in a silent bedroom may be less convincing beside an open office conversation.

Fit, glasses, hair and movement

Over-ear cups need a stable seal, but comfort varies with clamp force, pad shape and heat. Glasses frames can create gaps; hair can brush a microphone or alter the seal; turning your head can change the angle at which the array hears your voice. Test the exact physical setup you will use rather than judging fit from a short stationary listen.

Listener-side ANC

ANC remains important when you must concentrate or hear a caller over steady noise. Evaluate it separately from outbound microphone performance. A headset can be excellent for your concentration without being the best choice for people listening to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Communication battery rating

Look for a communication or talk-time figure when the manufacturer provides one, and note whether ANC or other modes are enabled. Sony’s stated 24 hours with ANC on and 28 hours with it off are communication ratings; Bose’s up-to-30-hour figure is a charge-life claim that is reduced by Immersive Audio. Neither number predicts your exact meeting schedule.

Device and platform compatibility

Confirm pairing, call controls and mute behavior on every device and service you use. Generic Bluetooth audio does not guarantee that headset buttons, application mute state or multipoint switching will behave identically across platforms.

Which path should you choose?

Choose the Sony WH-1000XM6 when calls are important but you still want a conventional ANC headphone

It is the clear starting point if you want a boomless over-ear design and the best-supported call performance in this group. The recommendation rests on two independent review findings plus Sony’s microphone and communication-battery specifications. Test fit and app mute behavior because those variables can change the outcome.

Choose the Bose alternative when ANC and listening priorities outweigh an unproven call advantage

The QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) make sense for readers comparing flagship noise cancellation and feature set. Do not buy them on the assumption that the available evidence shows better calls than Sony; it does not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Sennheiser or Apple when their broader ecosystem or sound priorities are decisive

The MOMENTUM 4 Wireless belongs in a sound-focused comparison, while AirPods Max belongs in an Apple-device comparison. Neither has enough evidence here to displace Sony as the call recommendation.

Choose a dedicated UC headset when your voice must cut through a busy office

Investigate the Jabra Evolve3 85, Poly Voyager Surround 80 UC and similar near-mouth-microphone designs if your main failure is that colleagues cannot understand you over nearby speech. Treat the named models as candidates to test, not as a proven ranking.

Bottom line

The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the best-supported conventional over-ear headphone for calls in the available independent assessments. Its up-to-24-hour ANC-on communication rating, adaptive microphone system and practical fit guidance strengthen the case, but they do not eliminate room, voice, app or fit variables. If transmitted speech in a loud office is more important than boomless styling, compare a dedicated UC headset with a microphone closer to your mouth; the evidence here does not establish a single Jabra or Poly winner.
