The right over-ear headphones depend on where and how you listen. For a premium wireless all-rounder, What Hi-Fi recommends the Sony WH-1000XM6; RTINGS highlights the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for its more generously padded fit. For quiet-room wired listening, RTINGS recommends the open-back Sennheiser HD 800 S, while What Hi-Fi names the wired Røde NTH-100 its overall pick. These are source-specific editorial recommendations, not a single standardized ranking: the models address different needs, and neither source’s verdict is a universal measure of what will suit you.
Best over-ear headphones by use
Over-ear headphones have cups that surround and cover the ears. That can make for an immersive, isolated fit, but it also means more bulk than on-ear designs. The shortlist below separates wireless travel and everyday use from wired listening, because an open-back studio headphone is not a like-for-like alternative to a noise-cancelling commuter pair.

Wireless for commuting, travel and flexible use
Wireless over-ears commonly combine Bluetooth with microphones and active noise cancellation (ANC). They avoid a cable across your commute and may make it easier to switch between devices. If calls matter, compare microphone performance rather than assuming that good noise cancelling means good voice pickup. RTINGS’ comparison puts the Sony’s microphone system ahead of the Bose’s, even though it considers Bose more generously padded.
#1 Best Overall
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Battery life, codec support and device switching matter only if they fit your actual devices and habits. The Sony WH-1000XM6 specifications in What Hi-Fi’s 2026 guide include multipoint and several Bluetooth codecs, but the guide notes no audio over USB-C and no aptX HD. A feature list does not establish that a particular phone or computer will use every codec; check compatibility with your own equipment.
Wired for dependable connection and critical listening
Analog wired headphones can operate without a battery and avoid wireless audio latency, which can be useful for studio work. But a plug that physically fits does not guarantee that a phone, laptop or interface can drive a demanding pair to your preferred volume and sound. Check the connector and output requirements. RTINGS specifically cautions that the HD 800 S may call for a powerful amplifier or audio interface, adding to the cost.
Rank #2
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
Understand open-back and closed-back trade-offs
Open-back models belong in quiet spaces
The HD 800 S is an open-back headphone. Its design allows sound to escape the earcups, so people nearby may hear your audio and outside noise can intrude. RTINGS’ praise for spaciousness and comfort makes it a candidate for quiet-room listening, not a sensible choice for a subway or shared office where leakage is disruptive.

Isolation matters in shared spaces
For commuting or office use, prioritize isolation and ANC, then check fit and call quality. ANC can reduce certain environmental sounds, but no single model’s rating guarantees the same result for every listener, environment or fit. The JBL Live 780NC illustrates why “similar ANC” is not the entire decision: RTINGS says it approaches the Sony in ANC, while noting less effective isolation for some bass and midrange noise and a firmer, shallower fit.
Rank #3
- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
Check fit, comfort and compatibility before buying
- Fit: Earcup depth, padding and clamp force affect comfort. RTINGS identifies shallow pads on the Sony WH-1000XM6 and shallow cups with limited padding on the JBL Live 780NC; try them on if possible, especially for long sessions.
- Use environment: Choose ANC and isolation for travel or shared rooms; avoid open-back headphones where sound leakage or outside noise is a problem.
- Calls: Look for microphone-specific assessments. The Sony/Bose comparison from RTINGS favors Sony’s microphone system, not Bose’s.
- Connection: For Bluetooth, confirm codec and multipoint compatibility with your devices. For wired models, check the connector and whether your device can drive the headphones adequately.
- Portability: Over-ear cups provide a larger, more isolated fit than on-ear designs but are bulkier; What Hi-Fi cautions that they are generally unsuitable for running and some outdoor exercise.
- Cost beyond the headphones: For demanding wired models such as the HD 800 S, account for a possible amp or audio interface as well as the headphones themselves.
How to interpret the recommendations
What Hi-Fi and RTINGS use different editorial and testing approaches, so their lists should not be read as scores from one shared benchmark. What Hi-Fi describes weeks of listening and comparisons with current class leaders, including wireless noise-cancelling testing in offices, city streets, public transport and sometimes planes. RTINGS says its wired recommendations draw on tests of more than 910 pairs across its broader headphone program; its roundup also considers price, visitor feedback and availability. Both sources warn, in different ways, that personal preferences and use affect what works. Their judgments are useful starting points, not a substitute for checking fit, compatibility and current local pricing.
Recommendations, stock and prices can change. The cited guides do not establish live prices or availability across regions, and a UK offer should not be treated as a US or global price. Check the exact model, regional variant and current listing before purchase.
